Biden To Demand "Humanitarian" Ceasefires as Israel Encircles Gaza City

Read Ed Morrissey's article for details of the IDF's invasion of Gaza, and its encirclement of Hamas's main stronghold, Gaza City.

Just as the IDF is ready to begin rooting Hamas out of their terrorist snakepits, Biden declares that it's time for "humanitarian pauses" to permit Hamas terrorists to escape.

I mean, to "get hostages out" and bring in food for the poor Hamas-supporting Palestinians.

Remember what we all said about Biden pretending to take Israel's side in public so that he could restrain them privately? They even leaked to Axios that that was exactly what they were doing, to reassure their pro-terrorist left that they weren't really trying to protect those awful New York Money Men from genocide.

Well, now Biden has even given up on supporting Israel publicly (though insincerely).

Now he just wants to protect those peace-lovin' Palestinians.

The IDF is deep in the unholy country of the enemy, and just had to fight off surprise attack from terrorists coming out of their tunnels.

In other words, the IDF finds itself in a precarious position thanks to its rapid success [that is, its rapid movement across Gaza[, one that isn't sustainable in stasis. Which is why, of course, that Joe Biden picked this moment in time to tell Israel to stop its operations so it can negotiate with the terrorist army that insists it will settle for nothing less than Israel's complete annihilation. Take it away, NYT:

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will urge the Israeli government to agree to a series of brief cessations of military operations in Gaza to allow for hostages to be released safely and for humanitarian aid to be distributed, White House officials said on Thursday.
The message comes as President Biden revealed on Wednesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel had previously agreed to halt shelling briefly on Oct. 20 to allow for the release of two Americans, Judith Raanan, 59, and her daughter, Natalie Raanan, 17.
Mr. Blinken will push for more of what American officials call "humanitarian pauses" in the war when he arrives in Israel on Friday for another round of diplomacy amid fierce fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas, the group that controls Gaza.

Hamas's -- and all Muslim terrorists' -- strategy has always been to launch cowardly terrorist sneak-attacks and then call in the defense. They have no actual defense -- except the big one: leftwing media and leftwing governments, who will demand that Israel make no reprisals against the people slaughtering them.

Leftwing media and leftwing governments are Hamas' air forces.

Now, Hamas's promise to stage millions -- yes, millions -- of 10/7 slaughters until Israel has been "annihilated" presents some problems for Hamas's media and governmental air forces.

It is difficult to claim that you want a ceasefire just to give the parties a chance to work things out by treaty when one side has declared it will continue launching terrorist butchery and rape operations until the end of time or the end of the Jewish people, whichever comes first.

So how did the left react to Hamas's declaration that everything their western supporters were saying about ceasefires and peaceful negotiations were terrorist propaganda and murderous lies?

Oh, the normal way -- they just refused to report it. They can't have the public knowing that Hamas has already announced that it doesn't matter what Israel does, they will proceed with genocidal terrorist attacks until every Jew is dead.

So they just straight-up refused to report this.

One weird exception-- NBC mentioned it briefly but did not comment on what this means for the "two state solution" and "peace process."

Foreign news outlets certainly have covered it. Newspapers from the UK, Canada, India, and others (especially Israel, of course) have given Hamad's declaration major coverage. So why have American media refrained from reporting on it? It's not just that they're pushing it to page A32, but that they aren't reporting on it at all, even though it directly and unequivocally provides the necessary context to this war. It would be akin to major newspapers reporting that Britain and France declared war on Germany in September 1939 without reporting the invasion of Poland or Hitler's demand for Lebensraum.
The only conclusion one can reach for this exclusion is that American media have taken the side of Hamas in this fight. They don't want to inform Americans about the real stakes of this war, and that it's not about Gaza, the West Bank, or East Jerusalem, or even the rogue settlements. They know that it's about the annihilation of Israel and the Jews -- but they don't want you to know it.
They have chosen sides, and it's the side of the terrorists.

But I'm skeptical that a 70+ year old landlord, who looks like he's got one foot in the grave, stabbed a kid almost 30 times because of his religion. I think there's much more to this story. For what it's worth, the landlord has pleaded not guilty.

The only rational play is for Israel to refuse. Hamas can have a "cease fire" any time it pleases by surrendering and submitting to military occupation. Short of that, no deal.

Existential war is total war. Total war requires unconditional surrender and unconditional victory. It can be either side, but it must be one of the sides.

I've been wondering what new approaches the Israelis have to detecting tunnels. The old ways of using microphones to listen are useful, but I wonder if they can use variations in the heat level of the ground (like the Ukes use to spot mines), density measurements like those used in looking for ore and petroleum, or look for telltale subsidence. The big improvement would be if they can put such instrumentation on drones or even robot carts, which can cover a lot of ground.

If they did have such tools, I'm sure they wouldn't say so.

69 I remember the propaganda efforts from the first two intifadas - it has been interesting watching the Palis try to run the same playbook in a very different information environment in 2023. Oh sure, they still have the major networks falling for most of their BS, but the fact that more people don't get their info from mainstream sources, plus just the general increase in news media competition means that ops like the fake hospital bombing are debunked in hours instead of days or weeks, and cost media outlets further prestige. There is no point. That is the point of the demand for a "cease fire" - to maintain the status quo of an "independent" Gaza that periodically makes war with Israel, and an Israel that periodically engages in partial retribution, while the complex systems feeding that dynamic continue to profit through power, influence and money.

Israel can comply with it, and retain access to that system - or it can decide to finally deal with the problem and possibly be abandoned by its one ally (unreliable as it may be). I don't know what it will choose, but I have a guess. That guess is that this ends up looking a lot like every prior scenario.

An easily-solved problem, not that they want to solve it. Just prohibit export of energy products from the US again and we're self-sufficient, even with Biden's anti-energy actions. The only problem is New England, which requires supply by ship because of NYS' refusal to permit new pipelines. Supply by ship means foreign supply, because of the Jones Act combined with the destruction of American shipping.

But there are much broader consequences of that, since our ability to resupply Europe will falter in such a condition, and we run the strong chance of losing hegemony there as a result and it would be a major blow to dollarized trade. But it could be done and if America still had any strength, we would do it because those downsides wouldn't be there.

But we don't have the strength, and so we're stuck.

Of the two it seems that Gaza is more in hand than Ukraine ever was. There's no arms flow to Hamas, nobody else has pitched in to put themselves on the line with Hamas. Ukraine has had far more stunts by the backers and by Ukraine that risk touching off a wider war than Gaza.

The real trick will be if Hamas is severely mauled where do the Gazans go? Because Israel would have a death wish if they opened the border or supplied power or water to anyone in there.

As someone that is an Evangelical, I personally don't buy into any sort of foreign policy direction the US should take based on what the Bible says about "Israel"

To me, it's not to be taken literally and has lots of different meanings. But there are people out there that literally think it means we get into WW3 if at any point any modern country named Israel asks us to.

I support Israel simply because anyone can see who their enemy is and what sort of people they are. But it has zero to do with the Book of Revelations.

There isn't any real gauge. The Napoleonic and Seven Years Wars have both been called World Wars because of the fighting worldwide over colonial possessions.

The issue in West Africa with Niger has pretty much been wound up with France losing. Niger has raised prices of Uranium to France to world standard levels, which is some 10000 percent increase. Jeez France, you could at least hide that colonial exploitation. The plans for a pipeline through the area to the Med are suddenly no longer a slam dunk.

There is a famous tin mine (now closed and a museum) in Cornwall and the pumps necessary to keep the sea out are massive and they gotta have power to function.

I believe you just pointed out the biggest drawback to the plan - the pumps have to be massive, and must be supplied with a whole lot of power. Not to mention a 36" conduit to the sea. None of those are very easy to set up in a war zone.

Gaza's basically a beach, so any drainage would have to be artificial and if the pumps are damaged or stop then you have a problem. If a hole opens up the inflow will also overwhelm the pumping.

Water wants to seek the lowest level and it takes quite a bit of power to reverse that. To flood, simply build a big ditch which is trivial in terms of combat engineering.

In the strike against Jabaliyah a couple days ago, the first stories reported how residents reported seeing massive sinkholes opening up after the original explosion was over, as there were secondary explosions underground. After about 12 hours those stories were scrubbed and suddenly they were saying that the holes were there because Israel fired 7 or 8 missiles right into a peaceful civilian refugee camp.

Militaries have gotten out of the practice of total war but history teaches us that total war often gives generations of peace because war was so horrible that no one wants to repeat it in living memory. The Napoleonic Wars gave Europe more or less 100 years before WWI. Ditto for the Hundred Years War and even WWII gave us roughly 75 years or so of significant peace around the globe.
