Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Hobbies? Who Has Time For Hobbies When There Is Fapping And Drinking To Be Done?Just kidding...sort of. But it does raise the question; What exactly is a hobby? ![]() This is definitely a hobby! And I am in awe of this guy for many reasons, but mostly because he is so incredibly patient! There are lots of videos and books that confidently tell us that baking great sourdough is easy! It's a dirty filthy stinking lie. Sure, baking a sourdough loaf that tastes good isn't much of a stretch, but baking a great one with a light crumb and crunchy crust is extremely difficult. It is primarily a function of technique, and that technique is HARD! But loads of fun! So try it, and expect to fail. This guy isn't a hobbyist, but he doesn't pontificate and make himself sound like the god of welding. Shooting and guns is another real-life thing that can become a hobby...but just don't let it go to ridiculous extremes. Customizing an AR-15 for one's particular needs (and desires) is loads of fun, but please...draw the line somewhere. ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at November 04, 2023 05:32 PM (MoZTd) 2

Fixed an old 23 channel CB this morning. Swapped out two dead crystals with a two good ones I took from a parts chassis of the same model. Last thing needed to make the one radio 100% working.
Other than that, on a parts hold. Waiting on a real time clock module I said I wouldn't buy, but at 2 bucks how could I not? I've got the rest of the parts I need and some code I ported to an Arduino sketch from python, after stealing it off a guy's project web page, to make a frequency counter. Once the code fails to work I'll try to understand it so I can make it go. Other than that not much happening on the hobby front around here. Coffee making isn't a hobby, unless you're into grinding your own beans and trying different brew strengths just to see what you can achieve. I think it's the experimental part that makes it a hobby. Otherwise it's kind of like cooking, which, absent the experimenting part, is necessary for life.
My idea of cooking is grilling some salmon or other fish, or chicken or ground beef, in a pan on the stove, or scrambling some eggs and sizzling up some bacon. It's hardly experimental. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 04, 2023 06:07 PM (omVj0) 67

You get that when you prepare a big dinner for family. There's always some BIL who needs to be fed by his spouse, who, anxious to say you'd make some man a great wife, will go "You ought to start a restaurant!" I'm an artist, not a prostitute. I don't consider athletic endeavors to be hobbies.
Athletics requires competition. If you're doing an activity without competition, and put time and money into equipment and training, it's a hobby. How can cooking be a hobby? I'm bad at hobbies, or more specifically I get bored and bail after a few years. Some come and go. I go off on gun binges or knife binges, maybe the technology has a bit to do with it. Is collecting a hobby? Sort of falls into its own category as I don't necessarily think it keeps you busy. And having your business as what a lot of people have as hobbies is really weird. Photography and art. Made my living at it. Started as a hobby. So, I put the camera down so I don't feel like I'm working, then pick up same camera with a different lens to go shoot wildlife and now it's a hobby again. Probably why drinking is the only hobby I've really been dedicated to.

My vintage safety razors are another collecting hobby, though the razors get used in rotation every other day. I have several Gillettes, a late Thirties, late Forties, two Fifties, and one Sixties, different models, and a Seventies Hoffritz slant. The two modern safety razors, a Merkur and Fatip, are fantastic shavers. But there is something neat about continuing the life of a razor that predates yourself, or even WWII.
Perhaps sometime I'll get the nerve and $$ to pick up a Gillette Old Type from the Twenties. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 04, 2023 06:26 PM (omVj0) 111

I watched Ultra Man in it's original Japanese. I thought it was silly, then, and still do.
Watching TV; hobby, pastime, or addiction? Posted by: NaCly Dog at November 04, 2023 06:21 PM (u82oZ) I loved Ultra Man as a kid back in the 60's. I remember coming back from swim team practice and watching Ultra Man and then the Monkees. TV falls into different categories IMO. Home theater suddenly can be a hobby, depending on how active you are on the hardware side. Same with being an audiophile. I was (or are) but that only seemed to be a hobby when I was constantly swapping equipment and trying different things. Now that I've settled on a system, it doesn't seem to be a hobby any longer. Same with my tons of vinyl. How can something that sits on a shelf most of the time constitute a hobby? And when I'm listening, it's the same as watching TV to some degree. I keep holding off going to a gun show again and seeing what I can find that would suit me. I don't have any indoor gun ranges close by (there was one, but I'm not sure it reopened after the Sniffle Scare). The two really good ones in the area are ten or fifteen miles away.

Speaking of Disney on the sidebar, I just saw a video that Disneyworld is going to require guests to wear uniforms? They claim that too many people are showing up in near pr0n drip, so this will put a stop to that. It's something like $75-100 per person. And, they said there's rumors they'll double the cost of the laundromats, unless you want to turn in your stuff and rent fresh crap.
What about just having a dress code? Spell it out. I'd think this would absolutely kill t-shirt and hat sales there. But, the sooner Disney dies, the better I suppose. Posted by: clutch cargo - processed in a facility that may contain lead at November 04, 2023 06:34 PM (zB/T/) 122

For a while I collected, or accumulated, manual typewriters, most for 50 bucks or a lot less. And in excellent working conditions. But, boy, they take up a lot of room. I'm reducing the numbers by giving some as gifts. To my surprise, it is younger folks, early thirties or less, who are eager for them. I thought it would be old farts, like me, looking for some nostalgia. These youngsters seem to appreciate a mechanism that still works perfectly that their grandparents or great grandparents might have used.

Something can be a sport and a hobby. Golf is a sport, but it takes a lot of devotion to it to become good. People study it, take lessons, practice hours and hours, try different clubs, etc. Different than swimming where anyone can do it with minimal effort or practice. I’m Not talking becoming an Olympic swimmer just your basic laps swimming at the ymca.
