Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Disney's The Marvels Projected to Make Less Money Than Any Marvel Movie EverIt's been reported that the movie has a budget of $270 million, not including marketing. That means it would have to make $700-800 million just to break even. That's not going to happen. Not even close. This is going to be a huge disaster. I think advanced ticket sales for The Marvels are down something like 47% from the sales of Quantumania, and that was itself a huge disaster. And if you think that's bad -- another projection puts the numbers down at Cocaine Bear levels. Okay, that's not as low as Cocaine Bear. But then, Cocaine Bear only cost a hundred and forty three dollars to make. The total gross? Grotesque! In a huge sign of how weak the film is, Marvel has embargoed all reviews until the day the film starts opening around the world. This is an old trick, of course: If your movie is bad, and you know critics will be unkind, you have two options: You can cancel all critics previews. But this tells everyone that the film is terrible. Not screening a movie for critics becomes a negative story in itself. The other option is to technically have critics screenings, but embargo them (forbid them from being published) until very shortly before the film opens, so that no one sees them before buying tickets. Disney has embargoed reviews until next Wednesday morning; the film starts opening in foreign markets on Wednesday, and then has the traditional Thursday opening, which the entertainment industry pretends is a "preview" for a Friday opening. So Disney is telling us they have no faith at all in the M-She-U. We tried to tell them that six years ago but they wouldn't listen. Note that they already announced they were resorting the other old trick to limit the financial damage of a flop: They cut the runtime of this movie down to a mere one hour forty five minutes, making it the shortest Marvel movie ever. That allows them to pack in screenings in the first weekend, before word of mouth gets out. In other Disney Disaster News: Annoying twat Rachel Zegler has had a moment to reflect about her abrasive comments about Snow White, and after due reconsideration, she has realized she was right all along and anyone who criticizes her is a racist or whatever. Zegler then shared some advice to those seeking to become actors in Hollywood, "To young Latino performers coming up in the industry, I would tell them to know their worth, and to make sure they're loud about having seats at the tables they deserve to be at," Finally, she addressed the backlash she received while positioning herself as a victim, "I have learned the hard way that we have to be fearless and loud in order to be heard, and to prepare for the backlash that occasionally comes with that outspokenness."You probably heard that The Daily Wire is making their own Snow White film to compete directly with Disney's. The Daily Wire film, it is advertised, will be based on the source material of the Grimm fairy tale. Hm, I wonder why they would mention that? They're spending tens of millions of dollars to troll Disney, and I approve. Brett Copper, the actress in the upcoming Snow White and the Evil Queen film from Bentkey, a subsidiary of The Daily Wire, shared that the film will focus on the "timeless values" of the original fairy tale and will not be a "MAGA conservative movie." In a recent video upload to YouTube, Cooper reacted to a TikTok video of YouTuber Ryan Kinel noting that people "don't want propaganda on the other side. They just want propaganda free entertainment." In response, Cooper stated, "And that really is the main point. We're not trying to turn Snow White into something it's not. We're not trying to turn Snow White into a MAGA conservative movie. We're just trying to represent the values that Snow White is based in. The timeless values that we all loved growing up that are sadly being forgotten in this new [Disney] adaptation."What the left claims is that their are politics in everything, and that the absence of politics is itself political, as it permits the Colonization and the Status Quo to continue without challenge. So they'd say a Snow White which isn't aggressively leftwing is, in fact, a "MAGA conservative move." But I really think they might have finally self-detonated themselves by supporting Hamas and informing the normies about what "decolonization" means -- and what they're planning for the rest of us -- so maybe we will not have to talk about "what the left thinks" for too much longer. The actor that Disney Marvel has made the centerpiece of their next big Avengers team-up will go to trial for assault and sexual harassment. New York Judge Michael Gaffey rejected a motion to dismiss the misdemeanor assault and harassment charges facing Marvel actor Jonathan Majors on Wednesday, clearing the way for a Nov. 29 trial. The defense additionally filed a motion under seal requesting that certain evidentiary matters continue to be under seal, or outside of public view. The defense argued that this evidence contains "sensitive information" that could jeopardize Majors' right to a fair trial. The state did not take a position on the motion, and Gaffey told press in the courtroom that they could submit papers in opposition by Nov. 6. Majors appeared in court virtually, as the judge mentioned he is currently out of state. Majors faces four misdemeanor charges of harassment and assault after being arrested following an alleged domestic violence incident March 25. Police responded to a 911 call where a 30-year-old woman, who has since been identified as Grace Jabbari, reported being assaulted by Majors, with police noting that she had sustained minor injuries. Majors was released from police custody later that day. That should make for great press. As I've mentioned, Nelson Peltz is making another bid to get seats on Disney's board of directors. Last time he wanted just one seat; now he wants three. He has upped his stake in Disney, so he figures he should have a bigger say. Analysts note that the first time he launched a proxy fight, he reassured stockholders that he just wanted a seat on the board and that he did not want to terminate Bob Iger as CEO. But now he is making no such reassurances about keeping Bob Iger. Which people take to mean he intends to boot Bob Iger out. And I think Peltz feels that stockholders want hm to do this. Couple bits of additional entertainment news: The last Poirot movie, A Haunting in Venice, will play on Hulu starting on Halloween, so there's something. And the South Park "Panderverse" special, which lampoons Disney's and Kaffeine Kennedy's endless gender- and race-swaps, debuts today on Paramount+. And they actually do skewer Kaffeine Kennedy. This report also comes in the wake of Box Office Pro's long-range predictions that claimed the film would have a domestic opening weekend between $50 million and $75 million.
++++ Box Office Pro has a decent track record. No matter where in the range "The Marvels" falls, it's a failure unless it legs out dramatically because it's actually good and people tell their friends. Recent Marvel installments have *not* legged out to any great degree. The opening weekend is make-or-break. This is particularly true for "The Marvels" because it gets real competition the next week (or the week after, I don't remember) from another movie in the same target market: the new "Hunger Games" movie. It will also probably not do great, but it shares an audience with "The Marvels" and will make a leg-out very unlikely. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 27, 2023 02:09 PM (ELpxa) 9

++++ They learned a painful lesson with Indiana Jones and the Geriatric Wandering. They thought it was good, sent it to Cannes and lifted the embargo and took the critic equivalent of artillery fire for more than a month, crushing what as already going to be a disappointment. I think Disney doesn't know what's good. They probably think "The Marvels" is good. They have no idea and can't figure it out and so, even if they think a movie is good, they're likely to be stingy with embargo windows anyway. The last time they thought they had a gem, they were beaten up over it. They're not going to do that twice. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 27, 2023 02:11 PM (ELpxa) 18

Posted by: Joe Mannix ----------- I don't think Disney is actually being run as an entertainment company but instead its managers want to push propaganda to their favored audiences of woke adults over profits. IF you like Garth Merenghi's Darkplace I suggest you watch Comrade Detective, it has the same type of humor, A Communist Detective is investigating a murder his Partner as they were trying to shut down a Blue Jeans smuggling ring. Does a good job of Making fun of Communism
Citizen X is really good. It's a true crime movie about a serial killer in Russia in the 1980s. The man investigating the killings has to navigate politics because according to their Politically Correct claims, the USSR doesn't have serial killers. That's a capitalist running dog problem. So he has limited resources, limited training, politicians breathing down his neck, and the pressure of wanting to stop a serial killer from hurting any more people. Good stuff. "This is what decolonization looks like" is one of the more important things to come out this horror, imo. Tell a misguided leftist this and they will say "no it's not the same thing" (as all the other leftist talk of decolonization). This is an opening to explain that well yes it is. Ask them what the difference is, and you have an opening to educate them. You're mileage may vary of course, but in my limited experience it's proven to be a gap in the armor. I don't know if it's an inflection point (if one even exists anymore) but it's a point of cognitive dissonance that involves such a colossally extreme point of view that it may provide an opening. It's hard to say if there's an actual person in the middle of the circle pulling the strings, but it is shocking to realize that a small group of people can exert control over pretty much every corporation in america. Because even if Blackrock only directly owns 10% of a company, through the other companies they control, it might be 25%. I was at NYC Comic Con a few weeks ago. Even though all the usual suspects were there with big presences -- Marvel, Disney, DC, etc -- it's like night and day compared to what these same sources promote and put on screen.
There was ZERO wokeness at CC. Just the opposite, in fact. Everywhere you looked, it was masculine heroes and hot babes with big boobs. That's not to say all the babes were damsels in distress. Some were heroes themselves, but that was always the case with anime, fantasy, and comics. Oh and if you think it's all comic nerds there, you'd be wrong. It's every race, creed, color, ethnicity, sex, age, economic bracket, and I'm sure politics. And everyone was so nice. It's always packed so you're constantly stepping on toes, bumping into people, etc. Everyone was like "oh sorry," and nobody ever got in your face. They're being run like MGM a decade after Thalberg died and Mayer was allowed to fill management positions well beyond reasonable, making it extremely top heavy.
MGM's movies through the 40s and 50s were consistently the highest earners at the box office, but they rarely made profits because the costs were just simply too high, and the extravagant sets and costumes of their musicals was only part of the equation. It had a good network of stores, an extremely robust distribution network, a strong catalog business, it sold computers *and* it was a major investor in internet services (Prodigy). The idea of moving computers with a light subsidy (say, a $50 discount on low-end machines, along with a free modem) in exchange for a Prodigy subscription for a year or two - with a custom version of the client software that dumped you into a Sears "online catalog" - apparently never occurred to them. There is a great documentary out there on the tubes about Xerox and their Palo Alto research center, where they showed everybody their new thing called software, and something they called a graphical user interface. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates took the ideas for free.
Posted by: Thomas Paine at October 27, 2023 02:41 PM (lTGtQ) ++++ It's a bit more complicated than that, but not too much. Xerox's problem is particularly interesting. They *knew* they were all a bunch of copier-heads and couldn't think of anything else. So the set up PARC to go be an innovation factory because they knew the normal corporate R&D process wasn't able to break out of its box. It was an unusually forward-looking action, and an unusual acknowledgement of blind spots. But when PARC sent stuff home to Rochester, they couldn't figure it out because it wasn't a copier. They failed to bring most of the PARC innovations to market. They did use the laser printing technology developed there, though. They could figure that out. They also figured out - sort of - the graphical computer. They embedded those as graphical layout controllers for the giant laser printers used for book publishing and whatnot. "Blacula!" and it's sequel, "Scream, Blacula Scream!" 2nd one has Pam Grier in it, which I'd forgotten. And both are actually pretty damn good horror movies. One of my favorite scenes is in the 2nd movie, where Blacula comes out into an alley and turns into a bat, to fly away. There's this drunk black dude standing there watching it, and as bat Blacula flies away he just stares and then says "sheeeee-it!!" Posted by: Tom Servo at October 27, 2023 02:46 PM (i9ffA) 218

Disgraced U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) appears to be more unpopular than North Korea’s communist dictator, Kim Jong-Un. In 2018, Ipsos polled Americans regarding the favorability of a number of celebrities and foreign leaders. North Korea’s Kim registered a 12 percent approval rating. What the left claims is that their are politics in everything, and that the absence of politics is itself political, as it permits the Colonization and the Status Quo to continue without challenge. So they'd say a Snow White which isn't aggressively leftwing is, in fact, a "MAGA conservative move."

"It Follows" (2014) again last night. It's a very well made slow burn horror movie with minimal gore for those who are squeamish. The story concerns a young woman who has sex with her newish boyfriend, and "catches" a monster from him that will track her relentlessly until it kills her unless she has sex with someone else and passes it on. This movie is very intelligently made. Great acting. And nice upping the creepy factor as things go along. Soon you will be spotting the creature even if the characters in the movie haven't yet. The ending is a bit weak, but only because the movie is so good that you want it to be great. Check it out. Posted by: naturalfake at October 27, 2023 02:51 PM (QzZeQ) 236

267 Last weekend movie thread, I recommended:
1) "Shrunken Heads" - the greatest "teen boys are murdered by the mafia and are resurrected as shrunken heads with super powers by a friendly voodoo priest" ever made! Not a great movie but tremendous fun. Little to no gore. Danny Elfman does the soundtrack cuz his brother directs the movie. Streaming on Prime. 2) "The Revenant" (200- Not the Leonardo DiCaprio/Grizzly Bear Rom-com but a very well made horror-comedy concerning an American soldier who encounters something in Iraq, is killed, and resurrects as something between a vampire and a zombie. He then decides to use his revenant powers to fight crime. A lot of fun. Some great gore. Good comedy. Strong horror. Check these out. "Talk to Me"- is the best horror movie that I've seen recently. Scary, shocking gore when gory, creepy. Everything you want from a horror movie. The plot concerns a group of teens playing around with a "hand of glory", a dead person's hand that if you hold and say "talk to you" will cause a spirit to possess you for a limited time, a s long as you stop the process before ten seconds have passed. Of course, someone goes too long. Hijinks ensue. "Smile" is a very good horror movie with a plot a bit like "It Follows" if you look at the person possessed by the "Smile" as they kill themselves, you will be possessed by the "Smile" and it will kill you within a certain amount of time. Kind of a mash-up of "It Follows", "The Ring", and "Fallen". "The Empty Man (2022) Streaming on HULU. Excellent horror movie. Concerning a detective trying to find a teen who's disappearing leaving only a message scrawled on the walls in her blood about the "Empty Man". Well-made slow burn with nice twists that just wants to creep you out. Check them out. Posted by: naturalfake at October 27, 2023 03:14 PM (QzZeQ) 324

So you are saying that a 100 year old company that should have this knowledge in its corporate DNA is so out of touch that it simply can't do its primary job?
That is amazing. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at October 27, 2023 02:27 PM (3Gtis) There's an old adage "Shirtsleeves to Shirtsleeves in three generations" -- grandpa builds a company becomes a suit, father sustains, and son/daughter runs it into the ground and is back in shirtsleeves. Went to a theater to see one of the Paranormal Activity movies. Was the late show.
During one scene, ghost rises up. Black dude gets up and walks out yelling, "Oh, hell no." Then as I'm leaving, I notice my phone fell out of my pocket. Nothing like walking to the far end of an empty theater that is mostly unlit after seeing Paranormal Activity. Posted by: The Central Scrutinizer at October 27, 2023 03:29 PM (KbCG3) 361
If I didn't believe they would complete f**k everything up, I would say they should mine LucasArts for movies, The Secret of Monkey Island , Sam and Max, Zac McCracken and Day of The Tenralce would be ripe for film treatments.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 27, 2023 02:45 PM (ELpxa) Yes, like IBM they were completely wedded to the machine they could lease out to a company for hundreds or thousands a month and didn't ever see going to a purchase model and cheaper, semi disposable systems. They didn't see that computers would outpower and because commodity items. Posted by: Oldcat at October 27, 2023 03:42 PM (eoQWY) 369

Recommendations for Halloween:
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra; and its sequel The Lost Skeleton Returns Again Clearly B-grade at best, delightful spoofs of 1950s horror movies, and with insanely funny memorable characters. Kid-friendly, too. The humor might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's not raunchy, there's no gore, and the movies have the look that convinces me that the folks working on the project were having a great time. >>>"It Follows" (2014) again last night.
It's a very well made slow burn horror movie with minimal gore for those who are squeamish. i was going to recommend that one too. Posted by: ace at October 27, 2023 04:12 PM (KRtlO) 373
The Daily Wire is emphasizing that their story is based on the original fairy tale in order to manage expectations. Disney tinkered a lot with the story when making his animated version. In particular, the characters of the seven dwarfs - Sleepy, Grumpy, Doc, Dopey, Bashful, etc. - are Disney creations. If people go to the Daily Wire film expecting to see a live-action version of the story told by the Disney animation, they will be disappointed.

I also came to recommend “It Follows”
IMO one of the best horror films in the last decade. Don’t skip it, it’s a slow burn but builds the tension to a crescendo and a satisfying end. Posted by: Cashin at October 27, 2023 04:19 PM (/g+Sg) 375
"Our Halloween tradition is to watch Something Wicked This Way Comes."
I've never seen a film that's come halfway close to matching any of Ray Bradbury's books. BTW, this Sunday afternoon, I'll be taking my daughter to hear the Milwaukee Symphony perform the music for a screening of "The Nightmare Before Christmas". That is our favorite all-time Halloween movie, and hearing the MSO play Danny Elfman's music live should be amazing. Posted by: Nemo at October 27, 2023 04:23 PM (S6ArX) 376

>I'm not looking for real horror, I guess. I just want stuff that looks like horror but isn't meant to be taken all that seriously.
My favourite movie in that vein is the 2006 _Monster House_. It's a Dan Harmon production, but stick with it anyway. What it looks like is an animated kids film about a sentient haunted house. What it _is_ is a surprisingly nuanced depiction of living with a spouse with BPD/CPTSD. In a kids' film. Posted by: Daniel Ream at October 27, 2023 10:56 PM (/0tPK) 378
