But, I mean, what do we expect by this point? Like Biden, he's losing his executive function and control over himself. Everything now is angry rage and narcissistic boasts. Just like Biden.
And he's encouraged in this, because many of his supporters agree with Trump: It really is All About Trump, and literally nothing matters except Trump. There are no political questions except "Does this validate and affirm Trump or not?" So when your loudest supporters tell you your megalomania is a feature not a bug, why not indulge it to the absolute limit? And when people tell you they find this very off-putting and unserious and even a little insane and worrisome, make sure you just dismiss their concerns completely. Just call them a cuck. Wow, this should set some people off. Posted by: Archimedes at October 24, 2023 03:15 PM (I/Qkd) 6

That's almost as good as when Trump decided to let out presumably-classified information about Israel and Netanyahu in the middle of a war, telling his crowd that he was "let down" by Netanyahu because he refused to actually take part in the Suleimani airstrike. Why this was necessary in an operation we had all the capabilities of executing, we don't know.

Jordan wasn't a compromise. He was another Freedom Caucus pick. Which about 20 members realized and then started voting against him in conference. Now we have Emmers, who I don't support BTW. It's a return to the bad old GOP past, whether they've agreed to move away from CR'a or not as a caucus. It's a prelude to the old way of doing business with the Uniparty and that doesn't do anyone any good. McCarthy was giving them most of what they wanted and then the minute they didn't like him they worked with all the Democrats to remove him. Whether you like McCarthy or not that willingness to work with Democrats to remove the Republican leader didn't sit well with 211 other members of the caucus. Posted by: Marcus T at October 24, 2023 03:30 PM (hbegC) Marcus, I'm not sure where McCarthy was giving the conservatives most of what they wanted. Mayorkas was unimpeached. Hearings were being held, but clearly not going anywhere. He didn't try to hammer out a deal during the recess, hoping that the budget deadline would make passing weaksauce a fait accompli. If McCarthy had simply moved to impeach Mayorkas - that's it - he'd still be Speaker right now. Posted by: Darrell Harris at October 24, 2023 03:35 PM (NuG8b) 171

McCarthy was giving them most of what they wanted and then the minute they didn't like him they worked with all the Democrats to remove him. Whether you like McCarthy or not that willingness to work with Democrats to remove the Republican leader didn't sit well with 211 other members of the caucus. Posted by: Mark1971 at October 24, 2023 03:42 PM (xPl2J) ======== There are some good films in that decade, but they're just...not Best Picture as the Academy had been rewarding for decades. Not that everything was great (Tom Jones is...curious but entertaining), but there was a consistency to the quality that they were rewarding. I think the secret is that the voting body of actors started working in unison to change the Best Picture winner to something more like a Best Ensemble Cast award mixed with rewarding actors who made the transition to director (Redford and Costner [from 1990, admittedly] are two key points there, though Beatty's movies like Reds losing is a counter argument). Posted by: Milquetoast --------- Yes he is and that is the pertinent issue not the gratuitous D vs PDT. Same as why support Federalist Society approved nominees in any future (if any) GOP administration. They refuse to enforce the Bruen decision, they refuse to enforce prior 1st Amendment precedent about government using private companies as agents for censorship, and they perpetually refuse to clean up elections by punishing Dems for going outside the law. He was a once-in-a-generation politician, who had no financial reason to run, and derived no net financial benefit from running. He's in the fight for his political - and perhaps literal - life for nothing more than trying to do the right thing. He said he'd gladly go to jail if that will make America wake up to what's happening to us. If that makes me a Trump cultist, so be it. Posted by: MAGA4EVER at October 24, 2023 03:45 PM (7h8Te) As someone who will likely vote RDS in the primary and DJT in the general, let me just point out that Trump's schtick has always been that of the anti-hero. He's like the political version of Tony Soprano. He says out loud what all the other politicians only say to each other. It limits his appeal, but it also forms a rock solid base, because there's nothing an opponent can say that will be worse than what people already know about him. It is quite the conundrum. Regardless of how it turns out this cycle, I will always be grateful that he showed us how deep the rot truly is. And it is shocking. Doesn't mean he's the best guy to do anything about it. I wish he would go Godzilla on the Tokyo that is DC, but I don't think that's possible anymore. Other than Reagan, can you think of any American Leader that has gone through what he has and stayed on course and on message? Maybe Eisenhower - but he was anointed not elected.
Posted by: Pudinhead at October 24, 2023 03:45 PM (YoT4f) Interestingly Reagan did struggle with that at the end of his 2nd term...probably b/c of his mental decline...it's amazing how a few years can change a person when they get old... There's an awful lot of cutting-off-nose-to-spite-face thinking on this site. I understand the anger. But it's unproductive, short-term thinking that will only give even more power to Democrats.

This is going to naturally weaken the GOP as a cohesive GOP body, leading to potential losses. However, the hope is that the change will be necessary and worth the short term losses in the long run. Watching this in congress is like watching the first 10min. of Saving Private Ryan. Eat a bag of dicks Matt Gaetz and then eat another tasty bag of dicks. BTW where is that ethics review of Matt Gaetz? Colossal POS! 8 anarchists who wanted to bring down McCarthy no matter what the cost, and in the end, Rep Matt Gaetz got what he wanted while the country lost.

298 Maybe the 8 brainiacs should have thought this through.
They look like fools for not having a plan and thinking through the different scenarios that might happen. Posted by: redridinghood ------ They did. They challenged the GOP to actually follow its promises. The exposure of most of the GOP caucus as frauds is not their fault and McCarthy's reliance on Nanzi's promise is typical of the GOPe in Congress. Since 2016, GOP in Congress has had chance after chance to actually govern conservatively. They always chose the least conservative path. Heck, even the Boehner Congress got the sequester which was ended when it started to pinch GOP grift from the defense industries. Now they are revealed as sad clowns crying and marring their mascara that their voters hate them but marching down the aisle to vote for a Speaker that will make their voters hate them more. Tells you who they believe their bread is buttered by. It ain't the voters--it is the GOP, in the House, in the Senate, and in the national party organizations itself. Their part in stealing 2020 and our nation's promising future along with it, made me finally decide I'm done with them. Literally EVERYTHING going to hell in America and the world is entirely on them. Some fucking "loyal opposition" they turned out to be! Loyal?? Es muy sencillo, Ace. Your boy DeSanctis marches to mega-donor music. Trump doesn't, and never will. Ultra Mega MAGA deplorables hate the donor class, and they hate back stabbers, which Ron is. It's just an objective fact. Please do try to deal with it, because it won't change. The Uniparty can even take Don off the ballot in the general, it won't matter to Ron, because he'll still never be president. Not in '24 or '28.
Instead of trying to shoehorn Ron into the equation, maybe you more nuanced, moderate, and mannered types could do something useful, like look to ensuring vote-count integrity. But nah, that's what Trump and Lake keep yammering about, and it's all such a tacky turn-off, don't you agree? Posted by: Born Free at October 24, 2023 09:21 PM (6kqgf) 343
