First-World Problems...

Uglyorchid.jpg

I am second to none in my ability to destroy even the hardiest of plants, so killing an orchid is trivial. Barely an inconvenience!

Hell...I even bought orchid food and actually did some research about how not to kill them, but short of some gene therapy, I fear that the orchids that enter Chez Dildo are not long for this world. Which is weird, because my mother could grow orchids easily. And get them to bloom over and over, seemingly in all conditions.

Is there something about green thumbs skipping generations?

Which is too bad, because I think they are magnificent flowers!

That orchid leaf makes the plant look like the victim of some sort of parasite.
Leaves dying from the tip and then toward the stem, maybe some sort of parasite.
If a plant is not getting the right food or amount of water, it dies from the stem outwards.

8 My FWP that I have to fix in a few minutes is I snagged some loose wire with the flail mower attachment on the tractor. Now I get to spend an hour or so with the fencing pliers cutting wire, unwrapping a few from the spindle or whatever and cutting some more. By the time I finish that I'll probably decide the rest of the field mowing can wait for another day.

9 My FWP is I got off work at 08:30 but had to go to the office; now I'm tired, but hungry; I have a really good filet mignon ithawed and I could make that pretty simply, it would be great. But I'm too lazy to do it so I'm eating peanut butter crackers and orange juice instead.

Not to brag, but I have bunches of them. I have some very large and sunny southern facing windows, and the plants love it. I have aloe veras that are over two feet tall and sprawling like something out of Little Shop of Horrors. A huge pineapple plant that I grew from the top of a store pineapple. 4-foot lemon tree that I started from a lemon seed. And lots of others that I bought or got handed down.

15 The medium and watering are two of the most important things as far as orchids are concerned.

I use orchid bark, which you can get at HD or online. You have to replace it every 6-12 months because it breaks down and starts to rot.

For watering, I fill containers with water, then immerse the orchid pot up to the lip, and let it soak for 12 minutes. Then drain. Do NOT water from above, but if you do, don't get in on the leaves, as they can rot.

MissOrchidGirl on YT is a good source.

Right now I have one repaired eye and one bad eye. Ordinarily the bad eye would have been operated on this Wednesday but Her Majesty is going up to Mesquite this week to observe at the Beagle National. So things have to sit until next week.

They had to take so much stuff out of the one eye that the healing is more prolonged. But it gets better day by day.

19 I have a vining type of houseplant of some sort that is almost 20 years old. It cannot be killed. It just keeps growing and has to be chopped back often. It grew down and tried to take over my desk. Yankee kudzu.

20 Most people fit SFP's observation though. I had some hardy houseplants that I basically got tired of and slowly killed through neglect. When my mom died I kept a sympathy plant gift alive for about 10 years, it almost died once 5-6 years ago, but was revived by repotting and then a year or 2 ago it just slowly died. I cut off dead branches thinking maybe with less demands on it it would revive but it did not.

24 My week in FWP -

Furnace making weird screeching noise intermittently. Technician out - $600 for what it needs. At least I don't need an entire furnace, tech said it was in good shape (20 years old).

Hubby's car in the shop for a brake issue. Damages to be determined.

Day after hubby's car goes to shop, my check engine light comes on. Might be nothing big, but won't know til hubby's car gets fixed.

Filed our taxes for last year (had extension). Owed them $300, but no penalty.

Dryer tumbling, but no heat. Repairs would cost almost as much as a new one of the same model. Or spend 3x as much for a Speedqueen. Have SQ w/d at my old house (DS and family live there now) and they are almost 20 years old. Nary an issue. Just not sure how much longer I can keep doing stairs. Told son he has to promise he will to take the new Speedqueen if I croak or can't manage steps anymore. He said "Oh yeah". ~$1400.

The thing that concerns me most is that I pickup the grandson from school and really don't need both cars acting up.

Thank the Lord that we have no debt. I know so many people who would be screwed if this hit them all at once.

31 In a past life, one of my accounts was a meat packing house in rural Texas. The fellows that owned the place also raised orchids, which they kept in a hallway with indirect sunlight and all the mist and effluvia from the packing operation wafting through from time to time. I was told that they were making "damn near more than the meat sales" off the plant sales. No word on whether the plants liked rare, or medium...

33 My secret for orchids: 1) go to Trader Joe’s, 2) buy plants that have some closed blooms on them, 3) bring them home, 4) ignore them completely

My phaleonopsis routinely last 3 months. When the blooms Fall off, I throw it away and get a new one. I’m sure someone could coax the plant back to life like my mom used to do, but they’re just unattractive sticks between blooms so that’s not my thing.

The only tricks are to put them in a room with some natural light and away from a direct breeze/air conditioning vent, and don’t fuss with them .

Posted by: LASue at October 22, 2023 02:24 PM (Ed8Zd)

34 Orchids are weird. They require little to keep them alive. I literally forgot about my two orchids - I put them at the other end of the room to get them off the kitchen island.

After about 6 weeks, one of them sent up a stalk with blooms.

I think if you give them a handful of ice cubes every Sunday before you post the food thread, and some good light, they'll at least stay alive and maybe even flower for you again.

66 CBD, it looks like you have 2 options.
1) go the LaSue route and buy plants/flowers and throw them out after you've managed to dispatch them.
2) Plant them and practice benign neglect (BN) and see if you're over caring for them.
2a) Plant them with small amount of 3 month feed, water them once a week whether they need it or not.

Here in the desert we have to water more often; but, BN is my habit and we rarely kill plants (unless my homegrown watering system fails, then everything looks like it has been through a Sous Vide treatment i.e. grey and lifeless.)

As to the canning, Publius is my teammate and I couldn't do it without him.

As to the farming, I will only say that as things went downhill with Publius' daddy at the beginning of August, the garden went neglected for the next month+. I shudder to think of the lost produce. On the upside, we planted so much, we still got a respectable amount into the freezer.

74 Apply small pieces of hardwood charcoal and several limestone pebbles. Save rainwater and dip the plant when the sub-stratum is dry and then re-hang outdoors with at least 50% shade. Orchids are symbiotic organisms that utilize microorganisms, (fungi, bacteria, etc.) from the host. The less you handle them, the better. Osmocote is the preferred treatment, but is not food, per se, creates a medium from which the plant utilizes nutrients. Palenopsis are generally hybrids in the U.S. and the further from the genus, the more sensitive to other factors and difficult to maintain. You don't feed them, they feed themselves.

Went to the Waffle House on the way out of town - Eromero and his lovely bride were already seated at a table and they invited me to join them for breakfast - wouldn't let me pay for my meal (I left a nice tip for the server).

I had SOOO much fun this weekend; it was lovely to see folks I had met before (even if I had forgotten their blog name and/or their real life name), and wonderful to meet first-time visitors. I had so much fun being "solo" this year that I may do it again next year....

(ALL of you folks need to wear your nametags at all times at these MoMes, because I have slept quite a few times since the last time we saw each other, and I am really embarrassed when I have to ask who you are!)

Thanks to all who helped to make this year's MoMe a resounding success - you guys are the best!!!

I water it when it's looking limp. I really don't give it more than the minimum, and I've had it for 3 years.

Glad you let on that using MEK wasn't the best choice! I've used it to make a plastic paste from ABS shavings to meld to pieces back together.

Acetone: Do not use acetone on plastic. I used it on a mouse that had been labeled as property in a common computer lab (yeah, I was stealing it for another workstation). The permanent marker disappeared perfectly; but, the mouse's plastic texture wiped away as well. A perfectly shiny mouse let the cat out of the bag so to speak.

103 CFO Mom, if you have an electric dryer that rotates but doesn't heat up, the problem is likely very simple to fix. Pull dryer away from wall and unplug from outlet. Remove cover where cable enters enclosure and check screw terminal - cable connections. My last two dryers were free because of identical symptoms, and both times one of the two hot cables had melted due to a poor connection. Cut off melted end, re-strip, crimp on a ring terminal, screw it down tight, and you're back in business. Email in my nic if needed... and youtube has numerous vids on this stuff.

When he left to go to different group. We had a going away party, I gave him a poison ivy plant I dug up as a joke and told him when he wanted to remember us to take a leaf off and rub it on himself.
He did not take it with him so it was moved to a shelf in our work area. No one watered it for a solid month, and we noticed it was still alive.
Maybe that is the plant for you.

Victoria's Secret could re-brand itself to "good looking, and comfortable underwear with a classy name brand" and clean up. I expect they will go "frederick's of hollywood" instead.

159 The VS "Lane Bryant of Hollywood" may have been too much.

160 I killed both of my orchids a couple of months ago. I'm still upset over the smaller one which I had for 3-4 yrs. I started fussing around with the both of them. As they say, if it ain't broke don't touch it. Lesson learned.

161 We have mums outside in the ground. The deer ate the flowers off them the other night.

163 We have four big orchids in pots on the porch. The ones with long, narrow leaves. They bloom reliably once a yer, and have survived for a number of years, including a move to the desert (they're in a shady location, and have held up for 3 years so far).

If you grow a citrus or apple from seed, remember that many trees nowadays are grafts, and you may not get the same performance or fruit from a seeded offspring.

165 Get a pothos. They don't make pretty flowers like orchids, but they're nearly impossible to kill, as houseplants go.

166 157 +++ on the humidity. Temperature is specific to species and sub-species. I have seen variations at altitude, (above 3000 meters), where it is not un-common for it to freeze during the night usually the short days of the year. Mostly Dendrobians, small Catteleyas and Vanilla plants. The closer to the genus the greater the occurrence of odor in the blooms. Most Paleonopsis are Southeast Asia, Micronesia and the Philippines.
