Piglets! Years ago I saw a Brazilian music artist perform a concert, he's a bit avant garde. He played multiple instruments very well. A bunch of percussion, piano, guitar. So he starts singing in Portugese and he is holding a shoebox while he sings. Then he opens the shoebox and pulls out a couple of piglets and squeezes them and they squeal. It was a piglet interlude.

I think I had *one* cigar butt get away from me in the press of people in the after-door-prize crowd in the driveway n' patio.
Gotta let a cigar butt cool, before it goes into the can, or gets "field stripped" to be but loose leaf to decay as "organic" as nature intends. I'll normally let 'em chill down against the frame of my chair, give 'em a couple mintues and then toss 'em or tear 'em down. This one "went walkabout", and I couldn't find it anywhere near. I do hope someone did the Samaritan, and sent it to the Great Cigar Bin. Amen and Amen. (red-band, Manny Lopez, El Cubano Cigars. If found, I'll plead Guilty as Charged!) I had a recent very nice interaction with an ebay seller. I ordered an Onkyo tape player near USD$100 advertised as working, and when I got it it was not. I complained and he refunded my money immediately! I took a week or so and took the top cover off and discovered it was due to shipping handling, and there really would have been nothing anybody could have done, it was just one of those things. So we talked and he reposted a sale on ebay for USD$25 less than what I paid. The cassette player is essentially new, 1984-ish. I had the best experience with this seller.

With a 50 yd. maximum, I'd advise a CZ-457 Lux, .22LR, 25" barrel. Equip it with an aftermarket aperature (peep) rear sight, a sling, and y'all get REALLY GOOD at all of your rifle basics, using those Iron Sights and Proper Shooting Basics (including Prone, Sitting, Kneeling and Offhand {standing} positions.) It's a reasonably priced High Quality Rifle, possessed of INCREDIBLE accuracy, and will challenge you to shoot it to the best of IT'S ability. ($450/$500ish, varies) Don't top it with scope, for at least two years. Y'all MASTER the Iron Sights. Become Riflemen, not just mere "shooters." The 452 "American" was driving me crazy here about 15 years ago. One of my charges was about to get His First Rifle, and I wanted in the worst way for him to have something competitive for precision target shooting. The 452 had a hooded front sight that looks like an "Olympic," but it's not. I talked to the factory's competition shop about making the change, and they sheepishly admitted that the front is sweated on and is very hard to convert. Other than that, it is a very fine rifle indeed. I could not figure out why they didn't want it considered as a precision rifle.

I took The Kid to the range last night and she was upset that she barely got 12 rounds on the paper at 15 feet. .38 Special, she has small hands, cocking the hammer with the left hand and pressing the trigger with her right. Also, left eye dominant and right-handed.
I told her, the important thing is, I need to know you will pull the trigger on a human being. I need to know that. If you genuinely can't? That gun is a liability to you. I need to know you will say, Fuck off, BLAM. Accuracy is then so secondary it's not even worth talking about. The willingness to shoot, is far more important than accuracy practice. Related tothat 50 yd range.
When the Army used the M-16A2 they used a miniture target at 10 yds (?) to zero. When zeroed at 10, because bullet trajectory was still going up, and some point it start going back down... zero at ten was also zero at 300. There is a lot about this on the net with several variations including cartridge one is going to zero. The M-16A2 had the classic carry handle and tall post front sight. So that was certainly also considered in the 10 / 300 zero. Different rifle, different cal, different target it would not work so nicely. I went north out of Nashville and went up through Kentucky, up to Ohio, and straight east to jersey. Stayed over for the night in bowling green, and had a nice day time drive through Kentucky with a cloudless sky. Huge difference it made in the drive. Rt81 can kiss my ass.

RI Red, thank you for the recommendation. What you suggest as far as barrel length.
The other expert recommendation given here that I've bookmarked mentioned 25 inch. I'm not seeing the ruger in that length though in my dealer's inventory. Is it basically the longer the better? Posted by: naftali (havel) at October 23, 2023 09:33 PM (+EnXD) 210

Pistol, rifle (100-200-300 yard ranges), .22 range, shotgun.... It's about 90 minutes from midtown, but it can be a full day affair, with lots of shooting. It's a great range. CBD, next time you’re up, we’ll start at the lower range with a .22 or two at 50. I guaran dam tee you that you’ll be hitting aspirin regularly.
And then, it translates into hits on the upper range. My word as an acolyte of the one and only Muselid. Posted by: RI Red at October 23, 2023 09:34 PM (xZEBF) 214
The pic is of one of the villages near Oita. The city proper is small but it looks like a normal Japanese city. No bullet train, though.
Reminds me of a book about an American couple that moved to a small village after living in a Japanese city for a few years. The village was a nightmare for them; the villagers disliked outsiders and hated their neighbors even more. Rural life isn't always the idyllic thing people imagine. In NYC, I'd stick with the Bolt Action rifles. The semi-auto Ruger 10/22 is a GREAT rifle, but New Yawk and semi-auto are mutually contradictory terms. Even if legal now, they're a keyboard away from changing that. Start with the CZ-457, and later, add a Centerfire, bolt action rifle, suited for both long range target shooting *and* hunting. 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win. are both splended choices, with both having many ammo choices on the market. By time you work through the .22 LR skills and buy the Centerfire... feel free to "scope" the .22, also. That'll keep both concurrent on the same practice-tracks. Commenter "Scuba Dude" has much NYC knowledge in the shootery world, btw. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at October 23, 2023 09:37 PM (e6UQI) 218

RI Red. For learning with Iron Sights, the 25" tube offers the Sight Radius.
Plus, NYC +/- Semi-Auto. Plus, a desire to learn Long Range Riflery. With *very* limited selection and battery, I'd go Boltie, all the way. My CZ 452 Lux is a Minute of Golf Ball rifle at 125 yards, with factory irons. It might BE more accurate than that, but I wasn't, at least "that day". The Winchester 75 with the Lyman sights is good for 200+ yards easily. Not much punch at that range but you can drop it in. 40 grain usual velocity is predicable. Sameness is better than otherwise. The Target RWS is good for 200 yards.

The Kid has serious eye dominance problems and wants me to do a basement range for Airsoft so she can figure out her sighting issues.
I'm cool with that. She was upset she didn't get tighter groups at what 15 feet with .38 Special hollow-points and then was a little upset when I tried to explain accuracy is not the main point in self-defense. It's not a trainable business, get into it nobody really knows what they will do. I mean, I know what I will do, Not some mystery, and that kind of alarms her. It's impossible to teach.
