Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Is This Something?Candidates for "something" below. Here's a bit of decent Hollywood news: The critics attempted to tank the new horror video-game adaptation movie Five Nights at Freddy's despite it being, from what I hear, pretty good, for a kid-oriented PG-13 horror movie. Woke critics gave it 30% positive; actual audiences rated it a little higher -- 88% positive. They gave the movie incredibly bad reviews because the creator... voted for Trump has has donated to other Republicans. But guess what?Universal Studios' film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy's scared up a monster box office after the original creator Scott Cawthon refused to apologize to a woke cancel mob over his political donations to politicians such as Donald Trump and Tulsi Gabbard. (from left) Bonnie, Freddy Fazbear and Chica in Five Nights at Freddy's, directed by Emma Tammi. According to The-Numbers, the film banked an estimated $78 million domestically in its opening weekend despite having a day and date release on the streaming service Peacock. Not only did the film gross $78 million domestically, but it pulled in another $52.5 million internationally for a global gross of $130.5 million. The film reportedly had a budget of $20 million according to Deadline's Anthony D'Alessandro. It's free on Peacock right now -- it was debuted on Peacock and in theaters simultaneously -- but still racked up huge box office because the videogame is popular with kids and, as I said, supposedly it's not bad. The premise is that kids are trapped in a Chuck-E-Cheese knockoff called "Freddy's" and then are stalked by the animatronic characters that sing and dance in the restaurant. That may sound familiar, because Willy's Wonderland had the same premise, as did the horror reboot of The Banana Splits (yes that's real, I saw it -- turrible). But actually both of those movies were ripoffs of the Five Night at Freddy's video game. The movie version of Freddy's just took a little extra time to make it to the screen. If I can work a quick Disney Disaster mention in -- there is a fair chance that this tiny-budgeted horror movie about animatronic bunnies and mice beats The Marvels' opening weekend, despite this being simultanteously premiered on TV, for free (with subscription, I mean). On to the possibly somethings. You choose which are something and which are nothing. But keep it civil -- and no betting and no weapons. Is this something? If you doubt Gosling's ability to play this kind of character, you must not have seen, somehow, the best action-comedy of the past ten years, The Nice Guys. He's great in that as a zero-ethics low-skill injury-prone detective. Gosling isn't afraid to go full Lou Costello, when the performance demands it. I think it's something -- but the music. Gaah. So it's Romancing the Stone + Three Days of the Condor? Was it Three Days of the Condor where they read spy novels to find potential hints for real-life operations, but discovered something no one was supposed to know? Or which movie was that? (It's bugging me, if you can remember, let me know.) (Confirmed, it was Three Days of the Condor.)

With a budget of only $20 million, the film's break even point theatrically was $50 million. Given the $78 million haul domestically, it's clear the film has made quite a bit of cash for not only Universal, but production company Blumhouse.
++++ It smashed through it. And it smashed through it despite a "day and date" release on streaming - the box office wasn't the only place to get it. It's very likely that "The Marvels" will not match FNAF for opening weekend haul. It will be a humiliation and, as the kids these days say, "I"m here for it." Five Nights was pretty good, had an actual plot where I wasn't expecting one. FNAF is a funny story. Cawthon originally made the graphics of the animatronics for a cheery bright colored positive game. That game failed in part because everyone found the animatronics extremely creepy, so he leaned into it and did FNAF. The games all have no on-screen gore, although the backstory talks about quite a bit of it. I assume the movie's a bit more explicit, but probably not much. Scott Cawthon was semi-cancelled when the left found out he was a Christian...I guess being the most successful indie video game developer in history though gave him some protection.
Its good to see them failing...again. Though the games are...odd. And really I don't see the fun in them. Yep. The plot to Doom is kind of easy - its an alien invasion but surprise the aliens are actually techno demons from hell.
To have something halfway successful, you just need to manage tone and keep things in shadows. Do that, and you'll get the horror crowd to at least show up. It was Wes Craven's plight that he couldn't get money for anything other than horror movies. I mean, he did eventually make Music of the Heart, which wasn't very good, but dammit...he didn't want to make horror movies at all. "Meltdown" is the sixth, and final, episode of science fiction sitcom Red Dwarf Series IV and the twenty-fourth episode in the series run. It was first broadcast on the British television channel BBC2 on 21 March 1991. Written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, and directed by Ed Bye, the episode, featuring Wax-Droids of famous historical figures involved in a war of good versus evil, was originally supposed to open the series but was postponed due to the Gulf War conflict.
Kryten and Rimmer discover that the group have travelled to Wax-World – a theme park inhabited by wax-droids of famous real-life and fictional characters in human history. The pair discover that since the park was abandoned, the droids gained sentience over time, but divided into two warring factions – "Heroes" and "Villains" – with the heroes being on the brink of defeat as their captured comrades are melted down and turned into more villains. After Lister and Cat realise that they are on Wax-World, witnessing a parade of villains from different eras of history (including Benito Mussolini, Napoleon Bonaparte, Al Capone, Richard III and James Last) and the execution of Winnie the Pooh, [...] Posted by: andycanuck (krqg6) at November 02, 2023 04:49 PM (krqg6) 122

Horror movies are generally really cheap.
They were just the kind of movies that he could get the porn producer to front him for when he made The Last House on the Left. Surprisingly good horror comedy based on a stabby serial killer movie combined with Back to the Future. Extremely cleverly written wherein the super woke heroine goes back to the 80's and is shocked by everything normal back then. When he gave an order, someone had to ride out over miles to hand it to an officer, who then had to send out more men. Thus, it took hours for things to start and finish happening. DuJardin is also in Le Retour du Heros with Melanie Laurant, from Inglorious Basterds and Now You See Him. Funny romcom.
Premise: Dujardin is a scoundrel and seducer who takes an interest in Melanie Laurent's gullible sister. (He just wants to bang her.) But he's called off to war, and then never writes to the sister, breaking her heart. So Laurent writes letters supposedly from him, painting him as great hero, and then ending with his tragic death in battle. This she thinks will end the depression but also get her to move on. But then this scumbag drunk Dujardin shows up again and starts trying to bang the sister, this time now pretending that al the heroic things described in the letters were real. This makes Laurent mad, she's funny as she attempts to sabotage him. She's also angry that he's ruining the smartly-crafted fiction she wrote about Dujardin by adding in coarse, stupid he-man power-fantasaies. Posted by: ace at November 02, 2023 05:18 PM (KRtlO) 258
