The Fourth Geneva Convention requires that foreign civilians who wish to leave a conflict area must be allowed to do so, or must be given the opportunity to present their case for doing so to an appropriate tribunal. Hamas is thus violating international law.Well, let's just parachute Merrick Garland, Christopher Wray and Fani Willis into the center of Gaza City with Al Sharpton's megaphone, and they can declare that all of them are under arrest! Geneva Convention. Sheesh. I can't even find the words to describe it but suffice it to say we're dealing with Dark Age, reptilian savagery, no offense to the Dark Ages, reptiles and savages. On the latest episode of the podcast, CBD and I had a great conversation with Ian Lane, an attorney who is an expert in the area of "proportionality" and the rules of war. He was terrific and it is definitely worth a listen (here and in the sidebar) But afterwards, I got to thinking and painful is it is for me to say it, I could really care fuck-all for the Geneva Convention, the rules of war, and all the rest of it. War in general is a complete abnegation of everything that I believe in as a moral, upright, peaceful, God-fearing human being. That doesn't mean that should I be attacked, I would not use any and every means at my disposal including the use of deadly force to protect myself. That includes my country, the abuse of that in endless pointless wars by the powers that be notwithstanding. Israel is not dealing with a civilized nation. Gaza is a de facto nation because it has a citizenry and a government, for lack of a better word, that rules over it and fields a military force. But putting that aside, considering the acts of horrific barbarity committed against unarmed citizens, and the equally barbarous practice of using your own citizens as cannon fodder/human shields, what the hell does proportionality and following the rules of war mean in a situation like this? I would imagine that in a situation even such as this, the soldiers of the IDF when they move into Gaza are going to do all they can to prevent the death of non-combatants. And that raises the question of who is and who is not a non-combatant. If Israel has not learned by now that being concerned with world opinion on how it fends off an existential threat is as dangerous as the threat itself, then they're lost. And what was unleashed on them last week, in the light of the most dangerous geo-political instability since 1939, they really cannot afford to play that game anymore. As I've been saying all along, no quarter. But that reveals yet another problem: Islam itself. The people of Gaza elected Hamas as their government. To greater or lesser extents, the majority of Gazans support Hamas' aim of erasing Israel from the map and the broader aim of eradicating every Jew on the planet. Hamas are the frontline forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, whose aim is the Islamic Republic of Planet Earth. So, two million """Palestinians""" are under the gun and are both being refused entry into Egypt and even if the Egyptians were stupid enough to let them in, their (Gazans') leaders are not letting them leave because dead Gazans gains world sympathy. Now all that said, you all know in the back of your minds that the insanity of option three is likely being contemplated somewhere in Kalorama even as we speak, don't you?

The bitter irony is that Israel treats them better and they have a far better standard of living and quality of life by orders of magnitude than any other country in the entire region. If they only either accepted being citizens of Israel or lived peaceful, productive lives in the lands that Israel surrendered to them in the first place we could have avoided all this. Here is the thing about war: there are no rules, Geneva Convention notwithstanding. I served in the Army as a Bradley Commander in Desert Storm, and although I knew that the opposing Iraqi forces did nothing wrong except being born in the wrong country at the wrong time, I still had to kill them.

Something that was glossed over after 9/11/2001, it is difficult to overstate how insane our “leaders” are - the “rules of war” are very clear on this -
In order to be considered a lawful combatant it is required (among many other things) that participants wear a recognizable uniform, and carry a weapon openly. I still think that a ground operation in Gaza is needed, but I also realize the scale is daunting. The use of armor is going to be limited to areas not already covered in demolished, bombed out buildings. So Hamas will know where the heavy stuff will probably be. IDF Soldiers will be vulnerable in the urban setting too.
If the IDF is taking time to refine the plan of attack that's probably ok. If it's purely a political decision based on international or U.S. pressure, that's a bit unacceptable.

Hamas leadership is in Qatar. That fact says pretty much everything that the Israelis might do in Gaza is moot.
I think it is possible the ground assault may be a feint. I mean mobilization of that scale tends to just have a momentum of its own but Israel knows that Hamas wants them in there with them. They might just keep the air strikes and drone strikes up supplemented with commando raids and artillery but the tanks and main infantry troops just keep the border in check.

With communications essentially cut off and their primary territory blockaded by both Israel and Egypt, how do they command their fighters effectively? How do they reinforce them?
Yes, the top dogs will surely try again and again as many times as possible - but that doesn't mean that their presence in Qatar while the war is in Gaza means that there is no point in exterminating Hamas in Gaza.

The Geneva convention has a lot of parts that Hamas ignore, starting with firing/hiding among civilians but they also don't have uniforms, which means if they are captured they aren't treated as soldiers but terrorists.
It's one of those things that made the 60s movies of soldiers escaping an even more dangerous thing when they tried to break out as when wearing the uniform they (supposedly) had some form or rights, but if caught without it, they were completely screwed.
Occasionally it is mentioned in a war prison breakout film, but I guess sometimes the filmmakers trusted their audience knew something like that. Where as today, or filmmakers are often dumb enough they have their "good guys" acting with no morals and wondering why the audience doesn't embrace them.

The Geneva Convention - and any other - is irrelevant to this conflict. It has no bearing at all. Hamas is not a regular army, it wears no uniform, Gaza is not signatory to the Convention and Hamas observes none of the rules of the Convention. It's utterly irrelevant.
Hamas forces are at absolute best a semi-regularized guerrilla force and at worse a confederated band of murderers. The Convention is inapplicable.

If a million invaders pour over the border in one year (it's more than that, but a million is a nice round number) and 1% of them are special-interest invaders from other continents, that's still 10,000 special-interest invaders. Depending on which army and in which time period, that's a combat division.

Smells like a Matthew Shepard kind of incident, at least that's my knee-jerk first reaction. Were the landlord and the family involved in some sort of side business? Was the kid and/or the woman being used to make the rent? Did one of them resist or get discovered and so the landlord got a bit too excited and then tried to clean up the mess?
It could be what it is being asserted as being, but my first reaction when reading anything like this is either, "bullshit, it never happened" or "I wonder what is *really* going on between the parties." There have been far too many cases where something else was going on or it was a pure hoax. I suppose we might find out later on.

A 71-year-old snapping sounds unlikely (even in the case of demntia, there'd be a leadup to it), and then you throw in the stabbed 6-year-old... The whole thing is weird and even weirder that cops immediately declared it a hate crime. I do feel bad for the mom, no matter how it happened.

Hamas and their scum supporters are the new holocaust deniers. I've seen grown men, many used to the horrors of war and conflict, break down and weep at what they've seen first hand. There is no denying what happened. The evidence is everywhere and indicative of a concerted, managed effort. You don't get the same tactics being used without coordination, forethought and planning.

It might sting a little at first but carving people out of your life that cause you distress is healthier in the long run. My son married poorly and it was nothing but a nightmare to be around him and his brain dead lib wife. I don't need nightmares. Life is better without them.

2018, PDT's administration halted more than $200 million in aid to Palestinians but that and more in US aid was restored April 2021. Spring past, roughly two years later after the full aid restoration, members of Congress engaged publicly over Palestinian rights (including a one state v. a two state solution) and, of course, funding for Israel.
But circling back, Hama reportedly practiced the horrendous attack for a year or more. Why start then & why attack now? IDK. Some might say the right time for Palestinian Cause and relocation of many Gaza residents. But I wonder, too, what is the broader Civil Society being created worldwide?

Gaza is a de facto nation because it has a citizenry and a government, for lack of a better word, that rules over it and fields a military force.
