Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Layoffs and Production Shutdowns as (Non-Tesla) EV Sales Miss TargetsDealer stock orders for the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning were canceled in the U.S. in recent days, the Detroit Free Press has learned. Ford confirmed Monday that the all-electric pickups are undergoing "additional quality checks" at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center.“Additional quality checks”? Is something wrong with them? The issue is not safety-related, Gunsberg said. No, the issue is the growing glut of 2023 model year F150 Lightnings. Ford is now working to match its 2023 supply with demand as the company prepares to change over to 2024 Lightning production later this year, said Ford spokesman Marty Gunsberg.Let me translate. What would have been year-model 2023 electric pickups are now going to be year-model 2024 electric pickups (after their “additional quality checks” ![]() Earlier this year Ford announced a new $3.5 billion investment in an EV battery venture in Marshall, Michigan. It is already backpedaling. “Ford suddenly pauses massive EV battery project that Republicans are probing over CCP ties” [Fox Business – 9/25/2023] The media tried to spin the story as being about those rascally Republicans hating on China, but it’s pretty easy to understand what is really going on. Ford is not going to spend any more money on this plant since the batteries that would be manufactured there aren’t going to be needed.Ford said in a statement to FOX Business that work on the factory had been paused and spending would be limited, but declined to pinpoint the exact considerations that factored into the decision. "We’re pausing work and limiting spending on construction on the Marshall project until we’re confident about our ability to competitively operate the plant," Ford spokesperson T.R. Reid told FOX Business. "We haven’t made any final decision about the planned investment there."A South Korean EV battery plant in in Georgia is laying off employees due to softening demand. SK Battery manufactures EV batteries for Ford and Volkswagen. “SK Battery ushered EV sector into Georgia. Now it is cutting some jobs” [Atlanta Journal Constitution – 9/27/2023] SK Battery America in Jackson County, among the foundational manufacturers in Georgia’s electric vehicle ecosystem, is laying off workers after years of rapid expansion. SK Battery declined to say Tuesday evening how many positions are involved, but the company has confirmed that a group of workers have been laid off in Commerce, about 70 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, where the subsidiary of South Korea-based SK Innovation has two lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities. …layoffs were needed because SK Battery is “aligning production with current market demands.”Speaking of SK Battery, it does not appear to be a very good corporate citizen in Georgia. It had a pattern of illegally dumping prohibited lithium-ion batteries at a nearby recycling center. Despite being previously caught and instructed not to do so again, SB kept dumping the explosive batteries at the recycle center. They will not be doing so anymore, because the recycle center burned down, with SK’s batteries found in the ashes of the fire. The local fire department took four days and 3 million gallons of water to extinguish the inferno. SK is now being sued for $26 million in damages. “Recycling center blames SK Battery for fire that destroyed business” [Fox 5 Atlanta – 8/10/2023] The owner of a recycling center in Banks County blamed SK Battery for causing a tremendous fire last month that destroyed his business. Metro Site accepted industrial waste for recycling such as paper, plastic, and metals. It is not permitted to accept hazardous waste like lithium-ion batteries, the kind manufactured at SK’s sprawling Commerce plant three miles away. When [Scott Ledford] arrived, he said the fire had spread from a section of material delivered by SK Battery, flames leaping high into the air, and creating a plume of thick black smoke. According to a lawsuit Metro Site filed on July 30 against SK Battery, workers discovered two lithium-ion batteries near the start of the fire. It wasn’t the first time. According to the lawsuit, SK Battery America was caught "illegally dumping charged pouch cell LIBs" (lithium-ion batteries) six other times during previous deliveries of recycling materials. SK Battery "assured Plaintiff that proactive, preventative measures would be put in place and there would be no further illegal dumping and delivery of charged pouch cell LIBs…"And still speaking of SK… Ford Motor Company has been making a lot of really bad long-range decisions when it comes to EVs, so it’s not surprising that Ford is teaming up with SK on its massive EV venture in Tennessee and Kentucky. Ford, SK Invest $11.4 Billion in Electric Truck, Battery Plants [Bloomberg – 9/27/2021] Ford Motor Co. and South Korea’s SK Innovation Co. plan to spend $11.4 billion to construct three battery factories and an assembly plant for electric F-Series pickup trucks in Tennessee and Kentucky, the biggest investment in the U.S. automaker’s history.Construction on these plants is underway, with some hiring scheduled to start in 2024, and production to commence in 2025. Ford is planning to build 500,000 electric truck per year there. With EV production already exceeding demand, and with Ford shutting down other EV battery plants, and with SK laying people off at its existing battery plants, there doesn’t appear to be any production needed at these vast new plants. Republican Tennessee Governor Bill Lee (along with the GOP-controlled legislature) has committed $884 million taxpayer dollars – including a $500 million grant paid directly to Ford - to this project. In addition, the state is condemning land from rural farmers (who are mainly black) to build roads to this boondoggle, named Blue Oval City. (“Black farming community fights to get fair deal as state takes land for Ford plant roadways” - Tennessee Lookout – 4/03/2023) Blue Oval City is shaping up to be a catastrophic financial debacle for Ford, which will need approximately 0% of the battery and vehicle production capacity that is being built. It should also be catastrophic for the Tennessee politicians who bought the EV hype and chose to waste so much taxpayer money on this ridiculous gamble. I intend to write more about Blue Oval City as construction progresses and the EV situation worsens over the next two years. If any of you are involved with that project in any capacity, I’d be interested in hearing your stories. [buck.throckmorton at protonmail dot com] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Posted by: BignJames at October 13, 2023 11:04 AM (AwYPR) Heavens, are you out of touch. You "create demand" by funding the election of people who will mandate what you want irrespective of possibility. Israel accused of using cluster bombs in Gaza. The Israeli military is facing accusations of deploying internationally prohibited cluster bombs in its ongoing attacks on Gaza. This revelation not only casts a spotlight on the tactics employed by the Israeli forces but also raises serious concerns about potential violations of international humanitarian law. The use of cluster bombs is deemed illegal under the Convention on Cluster Munitions. This international treaty explicitly prohibits all use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of cluster munitions. However, Israel remains one of the countries that has not signed this treaty. Their alleged use of these weapons, therefore, skirts international law and raises questions about accountability and adherence to humanitarian principles. I intend to write more about Blue Oval City as construction progresses and the EV situation worsens over the next two years. If any of you are involved with that project in any capacity, I’d be interested in hearing your stories.
I grew up in that area and still have family and friends there. One of the guys I grew up with is on the "Megasite Authority" board. I'm told that one of the massive problems they're having is that no one is interested in working there and that they've raised the starting wage offer to $37.50/hr. A few reasons for that: much of the population is poorly educated and lack the requisite skills and that's even if they can pass a urinalysis. Those who are from there that could or would do the job mostly left for greener pastures years ago. . .to the point that one of my high school reunions was almost held in Nashville because so many of our class now lived in that area. It's just a given that anyone capable will leave the area as soon as they graduate from high school. Another reason is that there is a massive welfare culture in the area that even $37.50/hr can't overcome. Yes, it's that bad. Posted by: Bert G at October 13, 2023 11:24 AM (VARTN) 101

As for “downtime at the plant” affecting sales of the F150 Lighting EV, an ideal supply of vehicles on dealer lots is 60 days’ worth, Ford dealers are currently choking on a 97-day supply of Lightnings nationwide with 3,632 for sale. “Downtime” is not retarding sales.

What I would really like to have is a Japanese or Korean type "micro truck." They are small - about the size of a sedan - and have a small bed. The sides and tailgate of the bed are hinged, so it can become a flatbed very easily. Some of them also have hydraulic dump mechanisms. They have a decently high load rating.
They're tiny (as mentioned), slow, have damn few features but are dirt cheap. They're an ideal runabout truck. Most can only get up to about 60 MPH, but they're also not really designed for highway use. They're for in-town runs or work on the farm, and they're damn good at it. A micro truck is actually ideal for me and what I need to do, but they're illegal in the American market. They'd also be ideal for any number of small tradesmen. There is nothing but big trucks with lots of features now unless you're buying a fleet. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 13, 2023 11:39 AM (t0OGg) 182

"The aluminum truck was built for the yuppy f*cks that bought their truck as a show piece, not work. Those using it for work got screwed because the option for a steel truck wasn't there, unless you went Super Duty.
Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Joe Biden at October 13, 2023 11:16 AM (Zz0t1)" Aluminum can work perfectly fine for a hard use vehicle; look at the original Land Rovers as well as a half century's worth of military trucks. There is something to be said for a full size half ton that only weighs 150-200 lbs more than a mid-2000's midsize truck, if you ignore the increased difficulty in properly tuning the suspension. The tradeoff is that it's more expensive to repair if you want it to look pretty, which should not be a work truck consideration. I'd prefer a steel bed interior, though. Current truck is all steel body w/ a pretty stout factory bedliner. Posted by: somedood at October 13, 2023 11:47 AM (BW9UA) 219

The use of cluster bombs is deemed illegal under the Convention on Cluster Munitions. Tesla has half the market, which can be lower than it was before and still amount for record sales because the market is, slowly, growing but more importantly the number of players has ballooned dramatically.
___ The record is the overall sales. Tesla at 50% is just showing it's not the only game in town as it once was. But Tesla, like the overall market is still in growth mode More from the article: 2 Key data points "Electric vehicle sales accounted for 7.9% of total industry sales in Q3, a record and up from 6.1% a year ago and 7.2% in Q2" and "In 2020, just three years back, EV sales in the U.S. passed 250,000 for the first time. This year, the market will jump past 1 million. In Q3, Tesla remains the undisputed leader in EV sales, with Ford a distant #2 on the list, selling just over 20,000 EVs." The latest scam from the World Economic Forum, since they have decided Climate Emergency isn't going to work, is WATER EMERGENCY. The sky is falling because we are running out of CLEAN WATER.
There are 121 million tons of water on the planet for each of the 8 billion humans on the planet. Every ounce of that water can be turned into distilled water by using a solar still. Took one of those up the Alaska Highway back when it was still unpaved. The only damage was one broken headlight and a minor windshield ding, both from flying gravel. The only mechanical failure was a radiator hose clamp loosening (likely from vibration). A quick tighten and it was good to go. Drove it for several years after that, until it got rear-ended and totaled. So... not all *that* shitty. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at October 13, 2023 12:06 PM (Y6AXb) 322

CAFE gives relief to large trucks and penalizes small trucks. So a new bare bones Chevy Luv might get 35 mog, it'll have a huge fee attached to it making it uneconomical. Big ass need only get 20 mpg and a smaller penalty.

A Toyota Rav4 "Premium" trim is about $33k MSRP.
A Tesla Model Y Long Range" trim (the basic one) is about $67k MSRP. The top Rav4 trim - the "TRD Off-Road" is around $38k MSRP, as compared to the top Model Y trim ("Performance") at around $71k. The vehicles are of a similar size. The Tesla is nicer and has some more whiz-bangs and better performance. It's also a ton more money. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at October 13, 2023 12:12 PM (t0OGg) And in about 8 years, the Tesla will be worth next to nothing, as its very expensive battery will be worn out. “Lenders should not deny people the opportunity to take out a loan to buy a home, build their businesses or otherwise pursue their financial goals because of unlawful bias and without regard to their actual ability to repay,” Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division... “This guidance reminds lenders that denying someone access to credit based solely on their actual or perceived immigrant status may violate federal law.”
also The statement implicates the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), which makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex and more in considering a person’s credit application as the mechanism, even though the law does not list citizenship status as a protected attribute. So now the govt. can decide which "law" the bank is violating no matter what the bank does and make a judgement on whether to prosecute. Excellent way to control behavior extra-judiciously by the regulatory overlords. Posted by: Chuck Martel at October 13, 2023 12:15 PM (fs1hN) 369

Electric vehicles are the vehicles of the future! And always will be. As an aside, while personal lasers and rail/coil guns are cool as tech toys I don't see them replacing firearms anytime soon because chemical propellants have so much more energy storage density than batteries.
Posted by: Michael Gilson at October 13, 2023 12:29 PM (kS4zg) 392
Electric vehicles are the future, because people who actually try them like them and their costs are falling like a stone. The most popular car in the world is electric now (Tesla Model Y).
The only question is whether the legacy car makers will successfully learn to make EVs, or if it will be all Chinese makers. Remember when Japanese cars invaded the US? Like that, only worse. EVs are on an exponential growth curve. You can make all the jokes you want, you can insult EV owners every time this comes up, but it is what it is. I don't support making EVs mandatory, I think people should be free to choose. But as the cost of an EV keeps coming down, most people will come to prefer them. And I am glad we have Tesla because otherwise the future would be all Chinese cars. Companies like VW are claiming there is no demand but Tesla and the Chinese companies are selling exponentially more each year. I predict that the Cybertruck will be a real workhorse and the Tesla Semi has already shown it's a real, working truck that really hauls cargo. Stick a pin in my predictions and check in a few years to see how accurate they were. Posted by: mr_jack at October 13, 2023 01:00 PM (NLjWT) 393
The legacy car makers should have gotten serious about EVs in 2012 when the Tesla Model S was released. Now the flood of Chinese cars is here, and Tesla is selling more cars than Mazda or Audi. So the legacy car companies not only have to learn how to make EVs, they have to do it while competing with cars sold profitably at prices below what they can match. Huge R&D investment and then losing money on each vehicle sold. Bad deal. But if they want to have a future they gotta do it and it will only get more painful if they delay more.
And now the UAW decided to increase their costs. I was already dubious about whether the Big 3 would survive... if their labor costs go up drastically that makes at all the more likely they will just die. Note that it gives me no pleasure to discuss this. I would prefer that American companies prosper. At least Tesla is American. Posted by: mr_jack at October 13, 2023 01:16 PM (NLjWT) 394
I did NOT take math in public schools. Therefore I am quite confident that your math is.........wrong.
