Saturday Morning Coffee Break & Prayer Revival

10 14 23coffee.jpg

(No argument here. There?)

***

Good morning Folks. Before we get into the Prayer Revival, just a few rulz to go over.

1) Open thread. Feel free to opine, bloviate and/or lurk. It's all good.
2) Be nice, especially to the 'Ettes don't be touchin' 'em without permission.
3) No juggling with running chain saws. Running with sharp objects is frowned upon.
4) Have a nice weekend.

***

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.

Prayer Requests:
8/26 – Dash my Lace Wings asked for continued prayers. Her husband is still sober but needs to develop some interests to keep his mind and body busy – something that will give him joy and purpose in life.
9/23 – Thanks are sent to all for the prayers. They are doing well.

8/30 – Debby Doberman Schultz asked for prayers. Her husband passed away on 8/30, with her sitting beside him, holding his hand. The kids had been in and out, but the end it was like the beginning - just the two of them. As painful as it was, she wouldn’t have it any other way. She is so gratified that he is relieved of his suffering.
9/30 Update – Debby sends thanks to all for their prayers. They were appreciated more than anyone can know.

9/9 – Jewells asked for prayers for her brother-in-law and his wife. The brother-in-law has been diagnosed with dementia. He is diabetic and cannot give himself his injections, and he refuses to let his wife help him. He also refuses to stay home, even getting into the car with strangers to get away. Please pray for strength and wisdom for her, and for him to accept the changes that have to happen.
9/23 Update – The situation is getting worse. Her brother-in-law just wanders off when he knows his wife is not looking. He also has a “friend” who helped him withdraw all the money from the couple’s joint account, and put it into an account in just the BIL’s name. Now the wife cannot pay the bills or the mortgage. The BIL fell again, and his wife is at her wits end.

9/9 – NaughtyPine asked for prayers for one of her brothers. He’d been in the hospital for a week after a breakdown. This is the strong brother, the one who takes care of everyone else and never asks for anything.
9/30 Update – Her brother was cleared to return to work. She also says thanks for the prayers, and thanks for the advice, to ask him if he needs or wants anything every time they talk, so he doesn’t have to ask.

9/9 – San Franpsycho sent some updates: Paul, who we have been praying for as he deals with cancer, was admitted to the hospital last week for an ulcer. The NG tube was removed, and he will be able to eat soon. The other update is that Mrs. F. is feeling better in the ER, after 2 fluid IVs.
9/23 Update – There is no good news on Paul to report. Mrs. F is back to 100%.
10/7 Update – Paul has elected to discontinue further treatment of his cancer. San Franpsycho will fly out to see him for his birthday Friday. Please continue to pray for his complete and immediate healing.

9/9 – RedMindBlueState requested prayers. His brother-in-law’s mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and is not doing well. Prayers also for the family at this difficult time.

9/14 – creeper asked for prayers for a man who has destroyed his back after years of hard physical labor. He can’t have any more back surgery, so he is having an electronic nerve stimulator put in. Prayers that it would work would be appreciated.
9/23 Update – creeper says thank you for your prayers. They took the temporary nerve stimulator out of his back, and it’s up to him if he wants a permanent one. But it was the first noticeable pain relief in three years. It may have been medical science helping, but creeper thinks it was the Horde’s prayers.

9/14 – FenelonSpoke requested prayers for Jessie, their church organist. She hasn’t been able to play at church for a while, but she is back in the hospital. Prayers are appreciated!
9/30 Update – Please continue to pray for Jessie. She went to rehab for her arm, but got Covid, so it’s been difficult. Fenelon was able to visit her. She was mentally sharp but very tired, and able to laugh.

9/15 - Jewells45 could use prayers. Her last rounds of chemo have been tough on her.

9/16 – Rhennigantx asked for prayers as he experiences Afib. He is now facing drugs or maybe the ablation treatment.

9/16 – LMD asked for prayers for a sister who is in the final throes of hospice. Please pray that she will pass on so that her suffering will stop. Prayers are much appreciated.

9/22 – DaveT sent an update. He is a retired gentleman, and we had prayed for him in May, as he was going through some legal battles to save his home, for himself and his cats. The legal (and home repair) battles continue, and additional contributions would be very much appreciated. Please email Annie’s Stew directly if you would like to contribute, and she will send you the link to his GiveSendGo account.

9/23 – Jim (in kalifornia) provided an update on his relatives. His father-in-law is better after having a vascular catheter put in and emergency dialysis. His wife suffered through helping him, and also ended up with a new tumor. She also missed about 5 treatments, so all her other tumor markers are way up.
9/30 Update – Jim and his family could still use some prayers. His wife hasn’t been doing her cancer treatments. She has a new tumor in a new organ, a lung. His younger son is being a stupid teenager. They found drugs (weed, mushrooms) in his room and he didn’t see anything wrong with that (despite my house, my rules, zero drug policy). His father-in-law is finally out of the hospital. All this meant Jim hasn’t been working, so with big bills coming up (home insurance, car insurance), it will be fun figuring out which bills not to pay.

9/23 – Polliwog the Ette requested prayers for her mother-in-law, Peggy, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It seems to be contained, but fast-growing, and hopefully a lumpectomy will be sufficient. She is understandably nervous about the whole thing and would appreciate prayers.

9/24 – Eromero was having dinner with a 95 year-old buddy at the senior living facility, and had to bring his friend to the ER with pneumonia symptoms.

9/30 – Duke Lowell posted that his mother-in-law, who lived with them for ten years, had passed away on Wednesday. He asked that God would welcome her into his kingdom and the He comfort Duke’s wife and her brother.

10/1 Coelacanth asked for continued prayers for Cam. In addition to the other medical (and other) issues that Cam and his family are experiencing, Cam just found out he has testicular cancer, at age 26. Surgery is anticipated for later in October. Prayers are gratefully appreciated.

10/1 - Morgan, long-time lurker, gives praise for the exercise of God’s providence. He had a job offer in Sarasota that was withdrawn this morning. Very disappointed, but God has other plans for me which he has not yet revealed. Praise be to God.

10/2 – SMH asked for prayers for his ex-ex’s dad, which has stage IV laryngeal cancer. He had a trach put in last week, and it will be permanent. The cancer is very aggressive, and it’s only got 50-50 odds if he agrees to the treatment plan (total laryngectomy and lymph node removal, plus radiation).

10/3 – Hadrian asked for prayers for his brother and sister-in-law, who are on sabbatical in Spain. They’ve both come down with Covid and are confined to a small, temporary apartment. Prayers appreciated for 1) their quick recovery and 2) they survive the time cooped up with each other.

10/7 – Halfhand asked for prayers for her dear friend and former neighbor, Kathleen, who has been diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemo.

10/7 – Reforger requested prayers for a friend and coworker’s father, 92, and curled up into a ball on hospice. Reforger is praying that he would pass soon. The only allowable drug is morphine, and it’s not even helping with the pain; he barely is able to breathe.

10/7 – AnchorPoint asked for prayers related to a possible job change that terrifies him. It could be absolutely fantastic for him personally and professionally. He prays for God’s will, and not his, though.

10/10 – TP requested prayers for her co-worker, J. She has worked with him for many years, and was told today that they are firing J and his crew. Prayers for all of them are welcome, too. But J. is close to retirement age and it’s unlikely he’ll find a good job. Por, prayers that she is wrong and that he can bounce back from this.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her. Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Romans 8:26-27
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

Thank you Annie.

1 Prayers up for those that have asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and
Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God!
Amen!

3 Good morning everyone! The visit of the relics of St. Jude, Apostle of the Impossible, was amazing. Two days later I still struggle to articulate what I felt when my hand touched the reliquary. My youngest daughter - the one who was a God-hating trans-kid - was with me and afterwards said she felt euphoric. Like most teens, she's irregular on Mass attendance, but was wanting to know this weekend's worship schedule. We'll do Reconciliation today, Mass tomorrow and then feast to celebrate our completion of the requirements for a plenary indulgence.

The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem is asking for next Tuesday to be a day of fasting, abstinence and prayer for peace and our bishop is echoing this request, so we're doing a bit of Lent in October this year.

More to the point, did he care? There was a time when policy debates involved sifting evidence and sincerely trying to find out what worked. That stopped about 20 years ago when the left decided that all of their policy "solutions" were now moral imperatives and had to be done because they were "right," not because they would accomplish stated goals.

Thus gun control may well increase crime and violance, but it's "the right thing to do."

Update.
Thank you all. The old man is still sitting there. They did a catheter into him and got gallons of pee. He was passing enough that they weren't worried about it but he was still swelling up and retaining water so they just tried a one time use one. Now he has a set up in all the time. (I just can't imagine...)
Went from 190 to 150 pounds over the week and a lot of pain went with that water. They say this all the time but "any day now."

Thank you all.

50 willowed:
345 I do believe the so-called "two state solution" is now dead for good, because almost everyone in Israel now realizes it was never any "solution" at all. Most of them wanted to believe, just like many people in the US wanted to believe, that you could buy peace by handing out gifts to psychopaths. They have finally learned the hard way that they can't.

Now the West Bank will be a test of what to do; the people there, while nasty have been a little bit more inclined to coexistence with Israel. (of course Hamas does have a presence there) If they will help Israel root out and destroy the Hamas elements inside their society, there may be a path towards future cooperation in that area, at least.

The Middle East has been on the brink of war for my entire adult life, and I spent 20 years fighting a losing war to fix it. I am officially unable to muster any sort of interest in it.

The best thing Israel can do is break away from our influence, ignore our leaders, refuse all the "strings-attached" aid and do their own thing.

Yes, there were periods where things looked very bad, which I don't get into. In our current culture, I find the soft touch is best, a gentle invitation rather than main force. In her case, it seems to be working.

It's also a case of loving patience and realistic expectations. My wife and I both were pretty wild during those years, disdaining religion and doing our own thing. I'm giving my kids space to do the same so that when they come back, it is their deliberate choice at their time. I know Catholics who were very strict with their kids, enforced the Sacraments, Mass attendance, and none of their grandkids have been baptized as a result.

And in fact, my eldest has professed to being a witch, because of course. Gotta rebel. The funniest part of that conversation was the look of abject horror on the face of the youngest, who wanted to fetch an exorcist on the spot.

There's always something, which is why we have to make space for God on a daily basis.

China clearly did not always follow Sun Tzu, because if it did, its waterways wouldn't have been patrolled by foreign navies for a century.

If fact, I'm not sure China does even today. Mao's Little Red Book has a section on strategy that supersedes it, and under Communist systems, it's very different to "know yourself" because of all the layers of bureaucracy and effort to cover up problems. There has been zero negative coverage of the Chinese military, so we're expected to believe that it is the most flawless, perfect, ideal organization in human history?

No. The mishaps are covered up, so the solutions are never developed. A recurring theme in Chinese military history. Someone should write a book. Oh, wait...

After my husband died I discovered he had kept everything related to this time. I did not know he had to fight to get me treated at all--the recommendations were for palliative care. I only knew my daughter was 16 and good at it, and I was not going to leave her angry.
Well, here I am. I've watched my kids grow up and marry, I've watched my grands grow.

One of the more subtle points about Sun Tzu that many forget is that it was written to show how a weaker force (on paper, at least) can defeat a stronger force. If you are the one with the stronger force, you shouldn't need much clever strategy to defeat those who are weaker than you, although you should be aware of what they'll try. But Sun Tzu realized, as most great military leaders always have, that the real key to winning is to get inside your enemies head, and realize what they are going to do before they do themselves.

Yes, Imperial Chinese armies tended to use sledgehammer tactics, overwhelming opponents with numbers.

Right now the US military is in a state of collapse, worse than it was under Carter, who at least recognized the problem late in his term and tried to fix it.

China seems invincible, but that's often been the case with China before. Peacetime operations often create an illusion of flawless power, especially in totalitarian societies where failure is simply not allowed.

One of the most remarkable events of my lifetime has been the transformation of Green parties from peacniks to warmongers. It's absolutely nuts. These people went from peace marches to Unconditional Surrender almost overnight. One of the reasons I've starting going all-in on a spiritual worldview is that logic cannot explain this. 135 Speaking of Germany, if the Palisavage terrorist attacks on Israel are "justified" based on shit that happened 70 years ago wouldn't that make Israeli terrorist attacks on Germany "justified"?

Now, obviously the Israelis would never do that, as they are both civilized and understand that the people who committed those crimes are almost all dead, and even if they did, they wouldn't be intentionally decapitating babies and gang-raping women to death.

But it's a good thing to ask your local Palisavage sympathizers.

That was a little different. The Chicoms knew they could not match Western firepower, so they used night time infiltration to neutralize our air and artillery support, and then swept in armed with PPshs and bayonets. It was very effective, and the losses only started to mount when the UN troops learned to throw wire around everything, set command-detonated mines, and register all their positions for pre-set fires on demand.

The PRC tried the same thing against the Soviets, but they knew the playbook and mowed them down. The Vietnamese did the same, then went to guerilla tactics in the late 70s. China technically "won" a few miles of jungle, but at a horrific cost. They also failed to dislodge the Vietnamese from Cambodia. Mao had a serious thing for Pol Pot.

Most, if not all, of the "RUSSIA IS LOSING!!!1!" is based on Westerners declaring what Russia's "true goals" are, and then announcing their failure to achieve them. Russia never wanted to be in Kiev in 3 days, that was Milley's hallucination. If one goes back to 2014 and looks at the course of the conflict and its scope, it becomes crystal clear that Putin always wanted a limited war, with limited gains. His desired end state is a demilitarized frontier, with neutral countries on his western border. He's uninterested in dealing with angry minorities demanding independence, so annexing the Baltics, Poland, the world, etc., is just a neocon wet dream/nightmare/talking point.

Russian arms production is hitting its stride, they've shaken the rust of their military and are building a generation of tested, competent leaders with tactical competence. The rains just started, so operations are slowing down, but it appears that even so, they're prepping for serious offensive action on the Kharkov front. Avdeeka (sp?) is getting hammered, but no one cares because Israel.

The so-called "Two-state Solution" has always been a cover for the real agenda: a Final Solution.

I'm no expert on Islam, but doesn't it seem a little weird that "brave jihadis" eager for martyrdom would go out to murder babies, then run away and hide behind their mothers and wives when actual enemy soldiers show up.

I mean, that's more like what I'd consider a "coward"
than a "brave warrior", but I'll admit that I'm not an expert on the multicultural shit. Maybe in "their culture" hiding counts as "bravery" or something.

TX Gov. Abbott Installs Razor Wire Fence Along Border -- With New Mexico
Abbott said he is installing the barrier because migrants are coming into the US via New Mexico before crossing into Texas

Texas is installing razor wire on its border — with New Mexico.

Republican governor Greg Abbott said in a post on X Tuesday he is doing so because migrants are coming into the U.S. via New Mexico and Mexico’s border before crossing into Texas.

“We are stopping it,” he said.

Images at the border between southern New Mexico and western Texas, just north of El Paso, Texas, show the Texas National Guard installing the razor wire.

The move comes as Abbott has taken border enforcement into his own hands, putting empty shipping containers in points along Texas’s border with Mexico and creating a floating barrier of buoys in parts of the Rio Grande where migrants cross into the U.S.

I use credit cards for virtually everything. A couple of years ago if I used it to get gas it would show as a pending transaction for $100 until the transaction posted with the actual amount. Now it's up to $150 or $175 depending on the gas station.

You can't make a deposit at the ATM at the bank? Our bank has 24 ATM (drive-up and lobby) where most banking activities can be carried out, including depositing cash or checks. Very convenient. You can log onto your account on line and view an image of the check as well.

Local lawmakers were among dozens of demonstrators demanding a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war who were arrested outside New York Sen. Chuck Schumer’s Brooklyn home on Friday night, according to police sources.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Grand Army Plaza for the rally, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace — a self-described anti-Zionist activist group — before marching a few blocks to the senator’s Park Slope residence and blocking the street.

Indeed! There is a tendency for us to focus on the negative, on the things we want but can't get, or on all the problems of the world that we cannot solve. Carping about California, or Biden, or the Trump Wars - all of this is out of our hands.

But our family, our loved ones, our community, our parish - these are things that touch us daily. We must not become the online creatures who are alienated from everyone but their facebook "friends" and who no longer understand how to make human contact.

Since I cut myself off from news, I have more time to do simple kind things, and I'm scouring the parish bulletin for things to do. I feel so much better, and my kids are starting to do the same, taking screen breaks, going on walks. There is so much good in front of us if we will just open our eyes and see it!

319 The relics of St. Jude are an example of this. We got word of it happening last month, and I decided we should make a big deal out of it, a major event for the family. My wife was sold from the start, but the kids started to get excited, even the fallen away one expressed curiosity (showing she's not that far gone).

And then the day came, we went, we talked about it, made more plans for more things and while I've got a mountain of problems I'm dealing with (car repairs being a big one), that's something I can look past because it's not really that important. A way will be found, but when will we be able to touch a sacred relic in our hometown again?

Don't get buried in the details, take time for God.
