The Morning Report — 10/5/23

newtered.jpg

Good morning, kids. Quick. Which candidate has a policy platform that includes these main pillars:

  • Conducting all elections through the use of hand-counted paper ballots
  • Imposing term limits for members of Congress
  • Breaking up Big Tech
  • Disbanding NATO

Before you squeal with orgasmic glee while scanning the Trump, DeSantis or Ramaswamy websites, the answer is, believe it or not, Cornel West.

Of course, his platform also includes forgiving of all student debt and Medicare for All. And lest we forget, beyond the policy positions, his attitude towards America as founded politically and culturally is not going to entice Hillsdale College to recruit him for a professorship any time soon.

Ditto the candidacy of RFK Jr.. While absolutely right about several key issues, his doctrinaire leftism and contradictions on things like free speech (he's being muzzled by the media yet advocated muzzling opinions that challenged the climate change myth) tend to sour one's enthusiasm. Oh for sure, I'd never vote for him in a billion years. But at a minimum, his and West's candidacies, and more importantly their positions on issues that run contra the junta, present opportunities that go beyond the two of them being mere turds in the Democrat punchbowl.

There is disaffection morphing into outright anger from the more reasonable (for lack of a better word) quarters of the Democrat base with the party they have blindly supported for generations. Try as that party and its propagandists and cheerleaders to place the blame on conservatives, Trump, white people, capitalism and the usual panoply of straw men and bromides, ordinary people aren't buying those excuses for the in-your-face and in-your-wallet disasters that they are experiencing. See this story about the UAW, still striking and placing the blame on the push for EV's and green energy that will wipe them out entirely.

I'm not going to be Pollyanna and pretend that being mugged by reality, even to the extent where families, friends and associates of social justice fools either knifed on a Bed-Stuy street or shot to death in their Center City Philly home are suddenly going to en masse, take off the Darth Vader helmet and realize the error of their ways. But it does present an opportunity if not for the hardcore lost cadres and Marxist true believers, but for perhaps a good third of the country that is hopefully still reachable.

Considering all of the above, as well as West and Kennedy, it puts the Matt Gaetz-led ouster of Kevin McCarthy in a perspective that I think many are not seeing. In the words of the late great Milton Friedman:

“I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.”

I can't think of a more appropriate person than Matt Gaetz that that quote applies to in this instance. There's been much hand-wringing over what he did and frankly the argument falls short. Yes, he's got a huge ego and yes, Matt Gaetz is looking to advance his own career. The fact that he put that career and his ass on the line should not be overlooked either, but that's for another time. The point is, people are looking for saints in a den of iniquity that is Washington D.C. Forget it, friends, because you're not going to find them. That said, is everyone an abject scumbag criminal and phony? No. But beyond the vast majority that are, those few who don't fall into that category are, as dictated by human nature, looking out for themselves even as they at least try to do the right things.

Matt Gaetz is no saint. But in this instance, he did the right thing. It's up to you to decide if, pace Milton Friedman, it is politically profitable for him personally. In my view, it was morally and politically profitable for those of us who are tired of the fecklessness and nod-and-a-wink bullshit from the GOP.

So the whole thing was a disaster, no? Gaetz should have left well enough alone, right? Wrong. In fact, Gaetz has won a rare victory for the American people, and should be congratulated and thanked accordingly.

The removal of McCarthy from the speaker’s chair was historic not only because it has never happened before. For the first time ever, the American people struck back against the ruling oligarchy, and made it clear that they would no longer stand for the politics-as-usual that has brought the nation to this period of deep crisis.

For years now, indeed, for decades now, and with very few exceptions, the far Left has set political policy in the United States. On occasion, patriots have refused to go along, but almost every time their opposition collapsed into capitulation, with a few minor details adjusted but the larger principles of the Left’s initiative left intact.

This capitulationism has been the hallmark of the Republican Party since at very least 1952, when Dwight D. Eisenhower, the first Republican to be elected to the presidency in twenty years, made it clear that he would not make any effort to roll back Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, which set the nation on the road to socialism and the ever-expanding federal government that grows more intrusive and authoritarian by the day. Instead, Republicans would stand for the march toward socialism to be pursued a bit more slowly, a bit more responsibly, a bit more carefully, and that was all. . .

. . . McCarthy’s ouster is a signal to whichever Republican may follow him as speaker: patriotic Americans are fed up. The time for conciliation, compromise, and appeasement are over. The enemies of America have captured the Democrat Party and made the Republicans into controlled opposition. It’s time for some genuine opposition to the sinister agenda of these corruptocrats. Matt Gaetz has made a mighty effort to restore the voice of the American people in their own government. For that, every American owes him a debt of gratitude.

Friend and friend of the blog Robert Spencer absolutely nails it. Whatever Gaetz's motivations, whatever his foibles and flaws, he did what needed to be done.

And isn't it interesting, as in disgusting, that some of the most vaunted putative leaders in the conservative movement are ripping Gaetz apart when you'd think they'd be standing shoulder to shoulder with him:

    Mark Levin:

"Gaetz is a POS demagogue who repeatedly lied during the House floor debate yesterday, and then, of course, simultaneously was fundraising and collecting email lists on behalf of the people," Levin wrote on social media. "He insisted that the House failed to bring up 12 separate appropriations bills. The fact is they could not get them out of committee because Democrats wanted to spend a great deal more, which would have blown up the budget further, and conservatives opposed the bills. It had nothing to do with a refusal by McCarthy to oppose regular order."

    Newt Gingrich:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., floated the idea of removing GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida from the House Republican Conference.

"The effort to expel Matt Gaetz for being a destructive, irresponsible anti-Republican may be a step too far," Gingrich wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Expulsion from the House requires a two thirds vote."

"However expelling him from the House Republican Conference and eliminating all his committee assignments and all resources other than those an individual member is entitled to would be a rational response to his suicidal efforts to cripple the House GOP."

Anti-Republican? Hmm. I like that, Newt. In fact because of dried-up frauds like you and Levin, as well as the decades-long bullshit of Republicans who worked to fuck over Goldwater, Reagan, Trump and the American people, I declare here and now that. . .

    I, J.J. SEFTON, AM AN ANTI-REPUBLICAN

When people like Cornel West and RFK Jr. start not only making more sense but do so in a non-disingenuous way than the GOP, then maybe it's time for the GOP to un-fuck itself and people like Gingrich and Levin to do the opposite.

    Just saying.

      ABOVE THE FOLD, BREAKING, NOTEWORTHY

    • Richard Fernandez: "The game is up, but it goes on because politicians can simultaneously be winning the political game even while discrediting the game itself, like a sports team leading the league even while attendance is dropping precipitously. The revolt against Speaker McCarthy suggests the league itself may finally be in crisis. The system is breaking where you would expect it to — on the Republican side. But maybe the whole system is collapsing under the weight of an open border, unsustainable budget, and lawfare that will finally force a change in flight plans. It’s stalling like an airplane with ice on its wings. The establishment is still trying to maintain altitude and even climb by pulling back on the stick. But will it work this time?"

6 Cornel West is still an idiot.

    2) Term limits: a lazy solution for lazy voters that will make people MORE lazy. Besides, CA has had them since 1990. CA government is nothing I want to emulate.
    4) I guess disbanding NATO is great…if you are an isolationist who wants America to be as whiny as possible on the world stage. Bad idea. (But I would kick countries out of NATO: Canada, and Turkey.)

It's amazing that so many paid millionaire pundits miss the point (or are purposely manipulating their readers/listeners).

This was McCarthy's 2nd betrayal. Worse, second in six months. In May he met with Biden and negotiated the Fiscal Responsibility Act that Joe signed into law in June.

37 NATO served its purpose. I believe it was obsolete shortly after the Berlin Wall came down. The European countries that make up the bulk of NATO are useless now. Whether they fall under Russian influence or get overrun by jihadis is irrelevant (and to the latter... likely) and impossible to curtail without their own support. The thing is, they don't honestly seem to give a shit.

The Republican Party could never have won an election without the base, and they never should have dared to try governing without it. The right wing of the Party should have been ruthlessly schlonging the cucks a long time ago.

55 For years now, indeed, for decades now, and with very few exceptions, the far Left has set political policy in the United States. On occasion, patriots have refused to go along, but almost every time their opposition collapsed into capitulation, with a few minor details adjusted but the larger principles of the Left’s initiative left intact.

Suddenly, American families might be told to sacrifice sons to defend some random community in some long-forgotten European territory, for example, which is nuts, since 98% of America can't find these territories on a map.

Yup. Direct election of Senators destroyed the federal system. Too many people misunderstand the American system of government when it comes to devolution of power. Power devolves *from* the states *to* the federal, not the other way around. All federal power is derived from state power. To manage such a system where the states are subordinate to the federal but the federal is also downstream from the states, the states' interests *must* be represented at the federal level.

Direct election of senators destroyed that system. We had the "People's House" and the "States' House" and they checked each-other. Now we just have two People's Houses and the states have no ability to defend their interests outside of the courts. Direct election of senators broke the federal system.

127 Re: Be patient, bearing with one another in love, love one another as yourself, etc.

I think it's the same whether it's a fellow Christian or those who are purposely evil and destructive.

We are to help people get to Heaven. "Go ye therefore" and what-not. If someone is evil and destructive, our opposition of them and attempting to remedy their destruction is the solution.

If it's a fellow church-goer in a discussion in Sunday school, that same love is meant to help them understand (or help us understand) scripture better.

If it's a fellow church-goer in an affair, that same love is meant to see us speak to them and say "Hey, that's going to destroy you and everything you love."

I think that's what "love your neighbor" is all about. I'm profoundly stupid, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

The U.S. President plays a central role in U.S. foreign relations and shapes public opinion on foreign policy through speeches, press conferences, and other public statements.

The bizarre foreign policy statements made in Washington have one obvious impact: CCP and our Allies both will conclude we are a paper tiger. China will ask themselves, "Could conditions possibly get any better for invasion?" and off we go.

I was reading the notice of passing of an opera fag who ran a well-known opera blog.

The notice's author described the proprietor as "passionate". I've noted that this is usually a polite euphemism for "deeply disturbed". And the comments on this posting, not wasting any sentiment about saying only good about the dead, described the proprietor as a bitchy, vicious, nasty person who violently attacked anyone challenging his LGBTQ and far-left take on the genre.

But I also don't think he was the only one with such mental problems. Back in the day I used to read a variety of Usenet/Deja discussion groups. All I can say is that there was more sober, civil discussion in a single thread of rec.sports.baseball than there was in the whole of rec.music.opera.

190 Levin has been pretty cozy with Trump lately. I'd wager he's filling a "position" that Rush once occupied. My guess is that Trump seems to think he has McCarthy in his pocket(for whatever that reason may be) and Levin is privy to it. Maybe McCarthy is part of Trumps plan should he by some miracle win the presidency again(I don't think he will). Trump and McCarthy have remained cozy since Trump left office.

Levin disgusts me at the moment but by no means do I believe him to be "establishment" all of the sudden. If it weren't for three radio talk show hosts Howie Carr, Lee Rodgers(KSFO/San Francisco) and Mark Levin NOBODY and I mean nobody here in right-wing media or conservative blogosphere would be talking about what turn coats the GOP is or talk of a Deep State. These guys were railing against the GOPe while this blog had GOP shills COB'ing for it.
We'd still be beating our heads against a wall(as some still do here)if it weren't for these guys, about when and why won't the GOP do this or that, still being invested in a party that hates us.

this is the effect of years of digitized gerrymandering started by GOP. We need standard voting practices and voting rights in America. The only way MAGA has relevance is they're allowed to subvert democracy at damn near every turn from dark money to outright denying voter access. Red states have the lowest voter access in the union and one of the reason the US is not at the top of democracy indexes worldwide.

This is just an extension of attacks on Democracy most prominently illustrated by Jan 6 insurrection. It puts ALL of us at risk for the future. So, yeah, we are all harmed/at risk by this fascist take-over of the R party.

It's up to the stable and sensible members of the Republican Party to bring those loons to heel. If they can't, or don't want to, the future of the R party is doomed. Which may be a good thing.

199 There's actually an argument to be made regarding the constitutionality of both the FBI and DOJ. They are indeed Executive Branch level agencies meant to carry out the wishes of the federal government. I dont believe per se, they are outright unconstitutional as that would challenge the power of the federal government which has constitutional jurisdiction over certain matters across the states. But I do believe, and recent SCOTUS cases may reinforce that some of their powers are beyond the scope of our constitution. Congress can indeed by statute provide certain privileges, but they cannot legislate constitutional power not use the edifice of law to subvert those powers. Those powers don't belong to them, they belong to the people. There's probably a good argument to be made, especially after the next SCOTUS session.

That said, I believe they should have at least allowed it to move forward and be litigated. I don't believe SCOTUS will get involved unless the question presented is more narrow in scope. Say, if they present mail in ballots and a specific process as demonstrably and unquestionably being wrought with fraud and therefore damaging to another states interests. Recall that Biden's dog Major regularly bit Secret Service members at the WH earlier in his presidency and had to be removed, too. WTF is going on in there - why are these dogs basketcases (untrained - but also mistreated?), is Joe's instability triggering their protective instincts, any other ideas?!?

From 9/26/23 - President Biden’s dog Commander attacked yet another Secret Service agent Monday — marking the 11th known time the 2-year-old canine chomped down on the Executive Mansion’s staff.

“Yesterday around 8 p.m., a Secret Service Uniformed Division police officer came in contact with a first family pet and was bitten. The officer was treated by medical personnel on complex,” USSS chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi told CNN in a statement.

281 The only way I would get behind removing student debt is:
    A) Make the colleges/university pay for it
    B) Make the colleges/university pay for it
    and
    C) Make the colleges/university pay for it

Colleges have gotten this sweet deal that students are now indentured - the debts they incurred cannot be shaken by bankruptcy. So there's a good number of students who are sold a bill of goods, trained in how to be Woke (specifically, conscious of "Crititcal *X* Studies"), and left in a state where they're not productive nor useful as citizens. Others are left in a deep hole, owing tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars without the jobs to pay for it.

Remember - "Higher" education and degrees became a necessary item for many jobs. Part of that was pushing out actual productive trade schools, promising high-paying jobs as a return on investment.

Instead, there's a good # of schools serving tripe and charging wagyu beef prices for it.

And how much of that $$$ is siphoned back to the coffers of Democrats? THAT is the scam, right there. Guaranteed money, students shoulder the risk, and the Democrats get a large warchest for their campaigns and/or lifestyle.

288 Late to the party, but I suggest that instead of term limits, or maybe in addition to term limits, that Federal pay to Congressmen be eliminated. Let the states pay their Congressmen. People answer to who pays them. I would also restrict politicians from receiving any donations from people that cannot vote for them. The out of district and out of state donations completely screws up the point of representative democracy.

However I would insist on term limits for Federal employees.

Living right near Philadelphia which miraculously achieves 100% voter turnout some years, I've often wondered - what if the will of the AA community changes and their automatic vote for the (D) party starts to change? Will they notice... or have they begun to notice? Because I'm seeing some polling data that indicates an AA shift, even during the 2020 election that was not reflected in the results in Philadelphia. Same consistent 80% number.

Posted by: Divide by Zero at October 05, 2023 10:38 AM (enJYY)

292 291. All is not well either in the "D" party. The Philadelphia City Council, the legislative body, consists of ten members elected by district and seven members elected at-large. Districts wield power. So do block captains & those who gets the non-profit $ for their associations &/or good deeds.

Keep an eye on this: Sen. John Fetterman has endorsed two progressive third-party candidates seeking seats on Philadelphia City Council, becoming the second statewide Democrat to buck local leaders and align with the Working Families Party.

294 22. Skip, at least there's a chance we could see if our individual votes actually count. Voting by mail allows voters to check on line if their votes have counted (or, at least, went somewhere in the state system.)

The new county voting machines means we trust that our onsite, in person votes have been counted once an American Flag flashes across a laptop screen.

Also, mentally, physically challenged citizens get state ID through the DMVs, too. Have watched advocates, 'house parents' register their wards D for voting for decades. Ergo, they know how they can boost voting in certain areas and it'll simply blend &/or won't or can't be challenged.

We need a decent vote recording system that can be fully audited.
