Here's What Did Kevin McCarthy In, According to the Eight Republicans Who Drove Him Out of the Speakership
Kevin McCarthy won the support of the Freedom Caucus by making a few promises. One of those concerned the return to Regular Order.
In Regular Order, there is not one big vote on one gigantic spending bill that funds all of government. In Regular Order, there are twelve spending bills that cover the 12 main areas of spending. Each of these bills is voted out of the appropriate committee, and "marked up," with the committee adding and hopefully, sometimes, even cutting spending. The theory is that you can get a better handle on out-of-control spending if you go through the Regular Order of appropriations. That it's easier to keep spending down in 12 separate bills than in one gigantic mega-bill that must pass or OH MY GOD SOME BUREAUCRATS WILL BE FURLOUGHED FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS! DOOM AND MAYHEM! By the way those c*cksuckers are always paid for time time they were furloughed -- they wind up with multi-week paid vacations. But they scream the loudest about the furloughs, because they're almost all Democrat partisans. I don't know if I buy the procedural solution to getting a handle on runaway spending. I don't think procedural solutions can solve most substantive problems. The substantive problem we're dealing with his that when Republicans suggest small cuts in the rate of growth of spending, Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) attack them, and Republicans always cave. However, we all agree that something must be done. Everything must be tried. And a return to Regular Order counts as one of those things that must be tried. And Kevin McCarthy promised there would be a return to Regular Order. So even if you doubt that dividing one gigantic mega-spending bill into 12 smaller but still gigantic mega-spending bills would help control spending -- McCarthy still promised he would do this, and he got the Speaker position on the basis of this promise. But then he blew the promise off.Kevin McCarthy became the first-ever speaker of the House of Representatives to be ousted, after eight of the most conservative Republicans on Tuesday gave up on the California Republican's leadership, saying he failed to deliver on promises he made in January, including especially to fight for cutting federal spending back to pre-COVID pandemic levels.McCarthy wasn't the only one to blame. Republicans failed to pass those 12 major spending bills in a timely manner, provoking the current crisis. McCarthy could have canceled their recess to make them work on the bills and pass them, but he didn't. But you know, of course, that he didn't cancel the recess because of pressure from the Republicans. Who were themselves late in delivering the spending bills. So, these assholes should be informed that if they really want to be treated like Big-Boy Adults capable of finishing spending bills through Regular Order, they actually have to do their work on time and finish those spending bills through Regular Order. It's like they want the crisis because they affirmatively want the responsibility taken out of of their hands. It's almost as if they want to keep spending like

On Sept. 30, the speaker offered a 45-day CR that kept current spending levels and it passed, thanks to Democrats voting with 91 Republicans in favor. Ninety-one GOPers opposed the 45-day CR. "That was the last straw," another representative told The Epoch Times, because it all but rendered Mr. McCarthy's January promises irrelevant, and put the House back on course to being forced by Senate Democrats and the president into agreeing to kick the can down the road yet again. The last time Congress approved all 12 major spending bills in regular order was 1997.

It's a prerequisite, I think, more than it is an actual solution in and of itself. It breaks up the mess and allows you go after specifics. I can hold out and defund a big chunk of the government while I fight about it while still letting other parts - less valuable targets - proceed along.
There's a reason it's so hated. it isn't that regular order is itself so bad, but it will disrupt the power structure that has developed since Obama took over and allow for some things to have the barest possibility of changing.

When each bill goes through committee, there are actual votes recorded on the bills and all amendments. Then actual constituents can ask their rep, "Hey dipshit, why did you vote for this or against that". Or worse, a primary opponent can ask that.
Lack of accountability from Congress is a major issue - it is also behind the delegation of lawmaking power to executive branch agency "rule making". Again, nobody can run against an EPA rule, but if it comes from Congress, there is a trail of votes for political accountability.
There must be accountability for whatever your rep is or isn't doing. Otherwise, well, it's not a republic.

He could have done a lot of things. I said this in my thread earlier, but I *do* put this on McCarthy. Was he alone in fucking up? No, of course not. Is he responsible for it? Yes, absolutely.
That deal he cut back in January to get the Speakership was pretty simple: he returns to regular order, or the conservative minority - headed up by a man who appears to hate him personally (that's Gaetz) - will cut his balls off. That was the deal, and he accepted it.
Then he failed. He didn't manage the time properly. He didn't handle the scheduling. He didn't handle the "opposition" on the Democrat side of things. He failed at every step, then rammed through yet another CR. That - *all* of that - is on him. He knew the terms of the deal, and he failed.
So he got his balls cut off. It is what it is.

If I understood right the agreement allowed for a CR if they couldn't get all the budget bills passed and as long as it cut some amount of discretionary spending. And McCarthy himself is saying Gaetz is just posted off that he's still under investigation for being a child molester.

Regular order was not returned to. Does Gaetz have an axe to grind against McCarthy? Yes, it appears so. But Gaetz also has the whip hand and McCarthy knows that. He knew that back when he cut the deal in the first place.
So, knowing that, McCarthy failed to deliver anyway. He can't hide behind "we ran out of time" because *he* controlled the schedule. He can't hide behind "the 'other side' is obstructionist" because that's his damn job as the Speaker. He knew the terms of the deal, and he failed to deliver the goods. McCarthy being the "problem" is sort of like blaming CA's problems on Democrats. It's more of a voter problem than anything.
No Republican wants to cut spending, look at Trump's fiscal record. And this supposed to be the only "real" conservative left. That plank of the party just seems dead and buried. And it's what's causing our inflation problem.

In fairness, Trump did refuse the first one. There was a "government shutdown" and associated crises. At that time, I was all for it (and I am all for it now) and didn't want him to cave. That started at the end of 2018 and at 35 days, it was the longest "government shutdown" in history. He wanted the Border finding, and was handed a gigantic CR that had everything *except* that inside it. Handed to him by a Republican-majority Congress.
It was not only a mega-CR - something Trump indicated he was disinclined to sign after the first go-'round - it did not have the *one* thing in it that Trump demanded. He shut down the government and demanded that it be fixed. Congress refused to budge. Trump caved (the executive usually loses a shutdown battle, but I still think it was the wrong move).

Offer both houses a 1% commission into said fund. For every $10 million actually CUT* from a Federal Line Item, 1% of those savings is given to said fund.

Now, I think you'd get some Members And Their Staffs, who are EAGER to seek out new opportunities to actually CUT the Federal Expenditures. If the "commissions" can be made to out-earn the grift, the commissions just might be the winning incentive.

Also, McCarthy was putting all the 12 spending bills up for votes. That was his promise and it was getting done, but it was also getting bogged down in the generous amendment process which the FC also wanted. I Agree that time management was an issue. But nobody knew how long this would take and in the end they were getting what they wanted anyway.

To cut Social Security, people need to know that everything else is cut first. Don't do that, you don't get reform. Actually the real problem is Medicare, not Social Security as if you raise the retirement age month by month to 70 for full and 65 for partial as was done in 1982, the system remains solvent for over 75 years or so.
Medicare has a much worse financial problem as the amount of benefits granted versus the taxes to pay for it are much more askew. That was made worse by the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Dems which more or less double counted revenue from Medicare taxes as paying for Green Nude Eel.

It's a tax increase, but most won't care.

People view SS and welfare very differently for solid reasons. I worked for 35 years and paid into this system with my own taxes is much different than handing out money to those unwilling to work.

Dems work as a unit, Rs always fall for this "reach across the aisle" which is just a bad reach around. Rs have no fiscal disciple because they do not hold together. It is easier for a group of people being bribed to work together. The whole problem is that each rep is bribed with special projects to pass one massive bribe bill.

For example, if Congresscritter A chaired the xyz Committee or as a member of the Committee gave a vote on a big chunk of the budget that was a spending shitshow then, at least in theory, candidate B can run against them on that.

They wanted regular order, they got a "debt ceiling" deal that assumed equivalent spending and a very short-term "compromise" CR. That was not the deal. The deal was regular order, and McCarthy didn't deliver it.
Some random dude didn't recess Congress with a deadline approaching, McCarthy did. McCarthy failed to whip his caucus to get the job done. McCarthy failed to deal with the Democrats on the "other side." McCarthy failed to enforce anything approaching discipline with the debt ceiling deal. This is on McCarthy.
Yes, Gaetz apparently hates McCarthy's guts and wanted to take him out, but McCarthy *knew* that from day zero. Is this the outcome Gaetz wanted and pushed McCarthy into? I don't know. Even if if it is, McCarthy enabled this outcome. He knew the score, and he failed to deliver.

2008 was a proper recession that needed to clean out the economy properly, instead the government decides to kill small banking and slowly consolidate the entire banking industry.
PPP and Covid bailouts mitigating the consequences of state governments shutting down everything at the cost of some deficit spending.
Recessions have a real purpose. You don't want to kill off businesses arbitrarily by government shutdowns.

Just PPP was over $800 billion, and that was just a small part of Covid subsidies.
Also, it was not just an ordinary recession. The entire financial system had melted down. If liquidity stops, you can turn a recession into a Great Depression.
Also, the Covid bailouts changed our culture. You want to know why no one is willing to work anymore and we had he worst inflation in 40+ years?

Great Depression was already recovering before the massive government interventions that made it Great. The liquidity issues were government induced.
The economy was shut down, goods weren't being produced. Of course there's inflation. Allowing the entire supply chain to collapse and have to go through bankruptcy is insane.
You're literally arguing that the banks are more important than the economy which they support transactions for. We've had banking failures before. The 2008 bailouts are part of why banking is so screwy right now.

Big spender Trump's last pre-covid deficit was $975 billion and the DoD portion was $734 billion.
Cutting Defense would not cover our deficit, as you say, but it would go a long way to the solution. But your real comparison was us to Europe. My rebuttal is that Europe isn't comparable because they don't spend on defense. If they did as per their treaty obligations, our DoD budget would be potentially hundreds of billons less, and that is a huge help. Trump knew this.

They're running the test for 20 or 30 minutes. I don't really understand how this system works, but they said they're broadcasting the alert for quite some time but that you should only get one copy of the message. That leads me to believe that the handset probably returns an acknowledgement to the tower, which then takes you off the broadcast list. If your phone was off, it didn't acknowledge the message and so will get it on the next cycle.

Trump didn't shut down the country. He rejected the concept he had the authority to do so. Not every state shut down.
If the companies weren't bailed out we'd still have much of the economy's assets tied up in bankruptcy court. The scale of business default we're talking about when the entire economy is inconceivable compared to a normal recession, and had nothing to do with their viability as a business. It's literally just caused by the shutdowns.

I've got a TV on -- the EAS portion of the test hasn't done anything that I've seen.
I'm running a little test. I've got one phone turned off, which should prevent it from seeing the signal. Other two, on, are in the microwave. I want to see if that blocks it, when they're on.
Provided you're not too close to a tower, the shielding of a microwave oven should block the signals. I want to see if that works.
No regular calls will go through to any of my phones inside the microwave cage.

Personally I believe that for a genuine emergency it needs to be broadcast in the language the recipient will immediately understand which is why I think all alerts sent to urban areas should be done in the form of a gangsta rap.

You can, but it can be non-obvious and depends on how your handset implements the alert system. For me, I just tapped the "volume down" button and it shut up while the message stayed on the screen. I read it just as it started auto-reading the message. I hit "volume down" again and it shut up.
It will vary by device.

Spectrum(Charter) runs these damn EAS tests all the damn time. And it will fuck up their cable boxes sometimes, requiring a reboot.
One of the EAS alerts hits, and the cable box will get stuck on that channel and get locked up sometimes -- can't switch back to regular channel. It's also fucked up some DVR recordings I had going. Have to unplug and plug it back in to reset it.

Actually - this is a bit of statistical magic. The real answer is that Obama didn't. Until the GOP got the House and they argued endlessly over where the slush fund should be spent, which also drove W's spending declines in the last two years of his administration. Clinton took the end of the cold war bonus - and actually I think had a one year budget surplus - then loaded up a bunch of discretionary bullshit that overspent it like a drunken sailor. You can of course argue that W's prescription drug expansion was indeed a killer.
The key is divided govt typically drives spending restraint, it matters little which party is in office.

And Zombie Biden is back (I know he is still not dirt napping but I like getting a jump on things) with mandating the everyone that never contracted to payoff student loans now gets stuck with the bill for those that did. This is nothing more than the Federal Government taking my wealth without my consent and handing it over to the people that have Democrat approval. Couple this theft with NY stealing Trump's wealth and private property for political reasons and suddenly the bedrock principles of private property ownership and due process are as good as dead.
