Jim Jordan Announces Bid to Become Speaker

I guess he's okay, considering the other alternatives, which are few.

But can he even get the votes of the "moderates"?


Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan said Wednesday that he is running for Speaker of the House just one day after Kevin McCarthy was ousted.

Jordan, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, was asked by reporters if he is running for Speaker, as many GOP members have nominated him for the job, to which he said, "Yes."

McCarthy delivered a speech Tuesday night after being ousted as speaker, saying he will not be running for the position again.

Meanwhile, even Ed Morrissey is laughing at the Republican "moderates" who team up with Democrats in the (lol) "Problem Solver Caucus."

They expected their fellow Democrats in the (lol) "Problem Solver Caucus" to vote in favor of Kevin McCarthy -- to fulfill their side of the contract, to vote in favor of a "moderate" Republican to defeat the machinations of the "extremist" Republicans.

Instead, all of the (lol) "Problem Solver Caucus" Democrats voted unamimously with the "extremist" Republicans and against the "moderate" McCarthy.

In other words, the "moderate" Republicans on the (lol) "Problem Solver Caucus" got used and humiliated and betrayed by their Democrat "partners" yet again.

House Republicans partnered with Democrats to form the "Problem Solvers Caucus" (PSC) in January 2017, as a counter to the supposedly extreme-MAGA agenda of Donald Trump. For the most part, the Problem Solvers offered nothing much but cheap virtue-signaling by its members over the last six-plus years. The conceit played well in the competitive districts its members represented, but the caucus has never produced any successful legislation. It exists to fluff itself and to vaguely scold everyone else on the benefits of bipartisanship and defense of institutions.

And Democrats kept scolding on that point, right up until the point that every last PSC Democrat voted to oust a sitting Speaker for partisan purposes. Suddenly, the Republicans in the caucus are shocked, shocked -- no, wait, wrong analogy -- are surprised to find out that the scorpion they've carried on their backs acts like a scorpion:

GOP members in the group are furious at their Democratic colleagues who voted to remove McCarthy. The Republicans say he was punished for "doing the right thing" after advancing a stopgap funding bill on a bipartisan basis.

Frustrated members said that Democrats in the group, which is aimed at finding bipartisan solutions, sparked chaos for political gain despite many Republicans in the group having faced primaries for crossing the aisle and taking difficult votes.

A draft letter obtained by Axios took aim at Democrats for siding with "Gaetz and a single digit number of chaos agents in the Republican Conference."

"It is unfortunate, for America and the institution of Congress, that Democrats in PSC chose not to risk the smallest amount of political capital or show the minimal courage necessary to merely vote against the Motion to Vacate. Instead, they voted for the chaos and now hope to benefit politically from it," the draft memo said.

Under other circumstances, this would be hilarious. What exactly did these geniuses think would happen, especially after six years of posing without a single substantive accomplishment? The PSC was nothing more than a PR move by savvy Democrats intended to split the Republican caucus, paint the rest of the GOP as "extreme MAGA" by comparison, and if possible slow down or stop progress on the GOP's agenda. During the Biden era, the PSC did little or nothing to restrain the sharp left turn taken by Joe Biden.

There are "Republicans" who are and always have been Democrats, and it's about time we cast them out.

BTW, I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about Matt Gaetz's scheme as some commenters are. I think at some point the chaos agenda becomes extremely counterproductive.

I think this betrayal is different from the other "betrayals" of the past.

This wasn't about policy, which Republican leadership never cared about especially when it comes to conservative policy, but about the leadership's secured position at the trough. It may have been second class, but that's what Republicans had agreed to.

And Democrats stole that from them by letting McCarthy get vacated.

No, because practically everyone in Congress (few exceptions) look fondly at HS and have created a HS environment in the Capitol. The Republicans will forever be the uncool kids trying to suck up to the cool kids to be one of the cool kids.

The difference between 'moderates' in the GOP House and moderates in the Dem House is that with the Dems, moderates only play that way to get elected. Just having them in the House adds power to the Dems with seniority and power - who are all far-left - and gives them the ability to push their agenda. GOP moderates serve to weaken leadership, at best. At worst, they give the GOPe power to make bipartisan* deals with the Democrats.

He is not alone. McCarthy didn't act in a vacuum to kneecap his own majority. McConnell was involved, as you mentioned. So was McDaniel. The Party is all-in on the play to maintain a razor-thin majority (when they have to be forced to hold a majority at all) so that they can continue playing ball with the same old agenda while claiming there is nothing else they can do.

Sure, probably.

But that isn't what happened here. What happened here is a combination of two things:
1. McCarthy's failure to hold up him end of the bargain that put him in the Speaker's chair
2. Matt Gaetz's personal vendetta

But Gaetz was the one holding the sword that would come down on McCarthy if McCarthy failed to deliver. McCarthy knew that. McCarthy agreed to that as the necessary condition to get the gavel. McCarthy could have backed down and not gone for it back when this blew up the first time, but he chose not to. He wanted the gavel and damned if he wasn't going to get it. That required him to cut a deal with his enemy to get it done, so he cut the deal.

And now the deal cut him.

McCarthy was in control of his own destiny. Speaker Pelosi had no problem with drawing up Articles of Impeachment herself against Trump, for instance. What took McCarthy so long? He could have at least impeached Mayorkas for what was done at the border, and he couldn't even be bothered to do that.

If he spent the last eight months acting as a wartime consigliere against Biden, the caucus probably would have given him the space to make a deal. He didn't, and the caucus didn't want any more mush from the wimp.

It's not 4D chess, Trump literally just campaigns to the Left of where he governs. We're just accustomed to Republicans largely campaigning to the Right of where they govern.

Most of us remember the Trump administration. The concerns based on things he said, which really covered much of the spectrum on any given issue, turned out to be invalid. Trump is not an unknown quantity anymore.

I care about what people do rather than what they say. The Republican who campaigns as a firebreather is usually no different from the one who campaigns as a moderate.

Republicans ultimately got nothing to Trump's desk on Obamacare.

It's b/c everyone has a condition now, so no one would qualify if you allowed that phrase in for health care. I think I saw 25% of VA adults are "disabled" and that doesn't count folks like me with blood cancer who haven't decided to "play the game" and folks who have conditions that are not "disabling" like tinnitus or food allergies. Like, no one would qualify for a health plan unless insurance had to be made to take them now. It's the current state of the health of our nation...

You could have easily accomodated these people by just throwing them on Medicaid and having some special carve out. Have it means tested, after a certain income, $500 a month and you go on a state plan.
