From wiki-
Blood-drinking festival In Nepal, there is an annual festival held to drink fresh blood of yak in a belief that it cures varieties of disease such as gastritis, jaundice and body sprain. The fresh blood is extracted from the neck of a yak without killing it. The cut is healed after the ceremony is over. The ritual is believed to be originated in Tibet and Mustang. Posted by: Ben Had I gotta tell you, I do dig those animals. Like I said, just like the doggehs - they love scritches and the babytalk - "Who's a good boy?" - all of it. It's funny, they are not a herding animal so need to be enticed to move by sweet grain or treats. If you try to drive them with a gator they'll just look at you. They cool off, generally, by means of their hoofs so we put out those blue kiddie pools for them. You haven't lived unless you've seen a 1000# yak standing in a kiddie pool. vmom, "independent" brokers and agents often/usually charge off the top of your earnings or even take a percentage of the total investment each year as a service fee -- easy to ignore in a go-go era, harder to take in lean times. Some credit unions offer an advisor service with no fee. You probably don't want their detail research etc, but once you pay the entry fee you can move your money between investment groups without additional charges. In today's highly charged (sic) environment I count that a virtue.

To those looking to adopt a dog I humbly recommend that you look at the San Antonio Animal shelter website. Everyday they euthanize the most beautiful adoptable dogs and puppies (yes, healthy adult, seniors and many many puppies): GSD, Labradors, Huskies, and a variety of mixes of above. I have never seen anything of this magnitude. Most of them get maybe 3 days at the shelter before being killed. Look at their euthanasia list in their website. These dogs have just a few hours left. Just today there were at least three young beautiful German Shepherd Dogs in todays euthanasia list. All listed as adoptable dogs! Most that get euthanized within a few days are well cared for and confused owner surrender dogs. A potential adopter can call/email and place an adoption hold. If you dont live in Texas inquire how to get the dog to you with transportation through a SA rescue. It is very doable.

Posted by: Robert As far a keeping livestock, not too bad. They eat mostly grass and you can sell the wool - we don't shear them, just comb out the loose fiber every so often and send it off to a place that processes it. They don't need much hoof care unless they get injured and vet visits are rather rare. Much less expensive than keeping dairy or hogs and the time commitment is much less. The woman with the ranch runs tours daily and sells pics of the visitors with the yaks. Makes pretty good $$ with the pics. The animals are so gentle that we routinely have the local adult developmentally handicapped folks out for visits to mingle with the animals. It's good for both groups. ![]() Posted by: Tonypete at October 06, 2023 08:42 PM (x7plP) Posted by: garrett at October 06, 2023 08:42 PM (fbX6j) 135

We know a couple who did well with llamas and alpacas as an investment. But, she was into carding and spinning, they had a market for the yarn, and already owned a charming sorta-hobby farm. I'm not sure I can recommend yaks instead of Vanguard. OTOH, unlike brokers they are pleasant to be around, almost never impose DEI on their partners, and it would be fun to do the accounting for the yaks' tax. You might get a spinoff. My county has commissioner elections coming up. RINOs control the board and there is a push by conservatives to get them out. The RINOs are screaming about muhPreciousDemocracy and how if they lose it will be the worst thing ever. It’s so frustrating living in a relatively conservative place yet all local politicians are leftists. It’s what happens when voter turnout for local elections is 15-20% in off years. The left mobilized its people, especially unions. And everyone else shrugs or doesn’t even know an election is happening and the leftists win. Again and again.
Trump won the county twice with over 60% yet our mayor is a lifelong “educator” who is pushing for tranny bathrooms in public places and schools. Conservatives need to wake the fuck is at the local level. Those elections have more direct impact on people’s lives than the president, in a lot of ways. We got our new cat from my daughter, who got him in an unusual way. She was picked up her daughter (my granddaughter, natch) from kindergarten last year and there was this very nice looking cat who kept trying to run into the building and be with the kids. She asked the woman watching the door and she said "that cat is driving us crazy! he won't quit trying to get in here!" He was about a year old, and she surmised that he had been dumped by someone who moved and he was desperately trying to be around people again. So she brought him home, but she already had 2 cats and 2 dogs and that's a full house, so after a couple months I took him. Very friendly, very laid back tabby cat. Quite the hunter, too, I suspect from the time he had to live on the streets.

I left a couple G's with Vanguard a number of years ago and have been meaning to contact them about the woke shit. Their name comes up a lot, and they certainly did get into the ESG crap a few years back, but they just as famously got out of it following a lot of investor-shareholder pushback. And if memory serves they passed Oklahoma's test of whether a financial entity is being the asshole. So I'm quite unsure of their actual alignment, and more information is desired.
My primary bank, on the other hand, did not pass the OK test. Didn't have time to deal with it this summer--was out of the country for a while--but the great and glorious winter of discontent draws ever closer... Posted by: CppThis at October 06, 2023 09:18 PM (PZvjL) 189

Skydiving into instrument meteorological conditions (clouds, for the morons) is way illegal as it should be. I have enough to worry about when boring holes in the clouds legally on an IFR flight plan without having to worry about some meat missile coming through the windscreen.

Vanguard is the little brother of BlackRock. Equally vile. Give them no money.

That's great news (no matter how hard it was to do)!
Congratulations! Posted by: AZ deplorable moron --- I have all the emotions, but mostly relief. Mom is fine. Cheerful as usual. It helps that she probably doesn't remember! Last week we did a goodbye walkthrough after all the "stuff" (and there was A LOT of it) was cleared out. That was sad but we remembered many of the happy occasions. Without the stuff covering things up, I think it finally sunk in for her how bad shape it's in. But it can be a great house again. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at October 06, 2023 09:48 PM (4PZHB) You know, I have a huge stack of 78's my parents listened to. There is relatively little of the "classic" Big Band swing in there. Mostly tunes from forgettable movies, I think. And a little actual classical. And I have grown to love Big Band music, but it's not what my parents loved, though they lived that era. Drop zones can be indicated by NOTAM, but launching meat missiles into IMC is illegal AF. There is no balloon instrument rating, and few, if any, balloons have coms and transponders, so it’s hard to imagine a legal IMC launch.
Wifey and I went to Albuquerque for the balloon fiesta last year and it was awesome, and I learned a couple interesting things….. like why the balloons can’t fly in the rain: tHe top of the canopy is so hot that any rain hitting it will boil and do bad things to the integrity of the canopy. Who knew? But the fiesta itself was awesome. You can ge tight down on the field and talk with/watch the crews. I’ve never been anywhere with so many smiling people. Good times.
