McCarthy Caves; No Money for Border Security in Stopgap Spending Deal

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., says Speaker Kevin McCarthy is "in trouble" after the last-minute vote to fund the government this weekend, saying the deal was a victory for Democrats.
Donalds made the comments during an appearance on "Fox News Sunday" with host Shannon Bream. He said Republicans "did not get anything" from Saturday's short-term funding agreement. The GOP firebrand fell short of saying he would vote to boot McCarthy, R-Calif., from the speaker's office but said Republicans in the chamber are deeply divided.
Bream referenced comments from House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who declared Saturday that "the extreme MAGA Republicans have lost."
"Look, I'm gonna be honest. We did not get anything out of this continued resolution," Donalds said. "The border is still unsecured in our country. Why is that? That's because Joe Biden and the Democrats got their way. The Democrat members are very happy with what they got. I think this is a terrible deal for the American people."
"Cutting this government's spending down must happen. Inflation is still running rampant. That's not MAGA Republican, that's common sense. Having a secure border -- that's not MAGA Republican, that's common sense," he added.

Bream then pressed Donalds on McCarthy's status with the Republican caucus. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has threatened repeatedly to file a motion to vacate against the speaker.
"I think he is in trouble," Donalds said. "There has to be some level of strong leadership in our chamber, I'm just gonna be totally blunt. There are a lot of trust issues in our chamber right now, where people feel on both sides of our conference that everybody's not gonna hold hands and continue to do this work together."

Donalds nevertheless fell short of saying he would vote in favor of a motion to vacate against McCarthy. He also said he can't predict whether Democrats would vote in favor of such a motion.

AOC says she'll vote in favor of it.

There is also no money for Ukraine. But Biden will of course spend money on Ukraine whether it is authorized by Congress or not.

This isn't the first time that the Criminal Faction in the US government conspired with foreign criminals to defy US law. From June:

Let the initial scare stories of impending doom go without the actual doom. Let the sob stories of poor janitors not being able to find work play out.

Let America get through the stories and realize that not funding the federal government (you know, only like 15% of it in a shutdown) doesn't lead to actual disaster except for one rather slim selection of government employees.

There are 250K acknowledged to be crossing and signing up for $1200 in benefits each month.

Musk went down there and spoke to some border patrol folks, and apparently they're saying there are another 250K or so in addition to that. But they're not signing up for the free "refugee" money. And there's no reason for that unless they're criminals and on the books as criminals.

I think it has, but we've had enough momentum that we haven't realized it yet. There's record debt at both federal and individual level, with credit cards being some crazy number right now where people are trying to figure out how to absorb the additional $1000/month costs for normal living since 2019, and the news keeps insisting that everything is fine and it's the best economy ever. I think those things can work together for a while, but when it finally snaps it's going to be terrible.

It would be about actual change to how the federal government works. It would be about inflicting real damage on the administrative state.

I think the House did actually send them, but the Senate simply refused to take them up, emptying out another bill and sending it back as an omnibus CR that the House needed to accept or take blame.

Here's the thing:

Republicans do not run on cutting spending because Republican voters don't even call for it (theirs not mine is the furthest most people go, and don't you dare touch entitlements).

They do run on reining in government overreach and lawlessness, though, especially over the last few years. The way for the House to rein that in is through the budget. The DOJ gets 2010 level funds, and it is limited to these activities, that sort of thing. Impeachment that leads to the Senate not convicting is empty theater instead. It won't lead to any change, especially in an environment where PA can "accidentally" send out 250,000 ballots it's not supposed to and just be allowed to run the election like normal (like in 2022).

So, after literal decades of following the same pattern where GOP leadership "fails" on the budget, I can safely assume that they aren't consistently failing because they're inept, no matter who is in charge (including united government under Trump). They just don't want to rein in government overreach. At all.
