Daily Tech News 2 October 2023

Top Story

  • Can generative AI solve the greatest problem in computer science? No. What are you, stupid? (ZDNet)

"Researchers" are trying to use GPT-4 to prove one way or another whether P = NP.

Broadly speaking, the question is, for a given mathematical problem, if you can prove that a correct answer is in fact correct, is there always an efficient way to find that answer in the first place? (Though "efficient" in some cases might be relative to the lifespan of the universe.)

Nobody knows. Nobody knows if it is possible to know. But we do know that you can't find out by asking ChatGPT.

The only good part of this is that you're not paying for it. The "research" is funded by Microsoft (which owns a big chunk of ChatGPT creator OpenAI) and China.

Definitely Not Tech News

  • The interest rate on my home loan somehow went down. Not complaining, just slightly confused. (30 year fixed rate mortgages don't exist outside of the US, so we're vulnerable to whatever idiots are currently in government. And right now we have some real corkers.)

  • Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is airing now on Crunchyroll and probably elsewhere.

Frieren is my favorite manga of recent years and the anime adaptation takes great care with the source material. It completely held my attention even though I already knew the story. Head and shoulders above the average anime series that are generally aimed at teens or younger.

The story? Imagine The Lord of the Rings, only the action starts the day after Sauron is defeated, and asks, well, what now?

Disclaimer: Though he also didn't predict that people would line up to pay for telescreens.

As US currency becomes more and more worthless, peeps will look for a 'safe haven' to move money.

What you need is an 'anti-inflation' bill to spend trillion dollars or so on pet projects and your interest rate will be right back up again.

14 So is it like Lord of the Rings meets Kino's Journey?

My recent anime haul has been SAO:WotUW2 (possibly worst anime ever) Infinite Dendrogram (Predictible, unoriginal, but fun) Romantic Killer (95% old school anime goofy comedy, with a strange serious romance twist for like an episode, but good) Weathering with You (about time I watched it, pretty good though somewhat rushed towards the end, it almost wants to be a 12 episode series)

Now rewatching Cowboy Bebop for the 80th time, while adding in Uncle from Another World, which after one episode has the potential to be good, or possibly the most unfunny crap ever. I also really should finish Ergo Proxy.

33 What Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis) preaches is not Christianity, but a carefully crafted false narrative of deconstruction hiding behind the mask of spiritualism. During his recent visit to France, the Pope engaged in a bit of manipulative gaslighting, claiming that Europe is not facing a migrant emergency because Europeans only need to look at the situation in a different way. It should be mentioned that the Vatican has not offered its own vast estate as a place to take in migrants, either.

Pope Francis suggested that the real problem was the "exasperating selfishness of individualism." The message is relatively clear: Just conform to the demands of globalism and assimilate into the hive; the more you fight back the more it will hurt.

MANY PRIZES AWARDED

60 Morning again, folken,

Back from my workout and shower, fed the monsters, and am feeding me. 'Twas a little milder outside. The local weather mavens are saying we're due for some cooler air by the weekend -- what they call "a taste of real fall." Excuse me, a high of 76 F. is not "real fall." Way better than 86 or 96, but still not "fall."

This week is early voting for the governor's race, the primary I mean. I watched a little of a debate between five of the candidates. Two Dems, two Rs, and an Independent. Every one of 'em was at pains to say, "Of course I'm all in on climate change goals, zero emissions, etc." And other boilerplate responses. Where is the guy who will say, "Oil, gas, and nuclear; no jobs for illegals; strong police response to crime"?

I'm just talking about what a governor can do. Lousy-ana has no border w/ Mexico, so wall building isn't an issue. But my platform would be, you come here illegally, you don't work or rent, and you get turned over to ICE. (It may not do any good, that last, but not being able to live or work in a given state will be a deterrent.)

This guy thinks he did nothing wrong and will continue to be an asshole after he is released from the hospital. Meanwhile, the guy he was harassing is sitting in jail.

Yeah, gave up chasing power a long time ago. I find unless you're doing something really serious, like Pixy, or something really dumb, like gamers, you just don't need the capacity. Most of that capacity gets used as waste and clutter.

However this can also lead to things like, oh, your Android phone, which works fine and you just got 'a year ago?' is so obsolete it won't update your work app, which you need for work, not that anything is being admitted here...

162 High quality reporting from WSJ:

Inflation has fallen sharply in the past year. The economy remains strong. Yet Americans remain deeply unhappy about the economy, often citing inflation. It continues to weigh on President Biden’s approval and re-election hopes.
What gives?
One big reason: While economists and the Federal Reserve focus on inflation, which is the rate of change in prices, Americans in their everyday lives usually focus on the absolute price of the things they need and want.
On that front, prices for many items, though rising more slowly this year than last, remain well above their levels just before or at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and aren’t likely to return to where they were.

177 HP has totally screwed me with 'proprietary' MoBos and weird arrangements that are impossible to modify or repair; The Kid runs Asus because they have inexpensive 17" laptops and that's her thing; Acer was good to me, I liked their little what, 11" laptops for carrying around. Those were handy, durable and cool.

I got a (very) high-end tablet and rigged it up with a portable keyboard and mouse but it turned out to be not much more convenient than a Chromebook, when I got one, except for the touchscreen which I don't really miss *that* much. Then finally totally flipped out and vowed 'No more Windows!' with 10 and went full Linux.

183 Biden, I think, HAS made a great mistake in not developing and showcasing Kamala Harris who is well spoken, sharp as a tack, passionate and very much with it both in sharpness and energy.

President Biden is truly good, former President Trump is truly evil and a criminal in contempt of court. Joe Biden loves his fellow citizens, grifter and tax cheat Donald Trump loves Kim, Putin, Viktor Orban and OPM, other people’s money. The choice is clear. Racist hatreds or a liberal democracy, love your neighbor or hate him. Biden wants a strong NATO and UN and the FBI, Trump wants Russia to dominate Europe and the USA, Biden wants Ukraine to join NATO and thrive. Two men in their 8th decade of life offer the choice: the Good or Evil. That simple.

A well-thought-out set of requirements is extremely helpful in this process, but by no means sufficient - particularly when it comes to defining and coding error-handling.
