THE MORNING RANT: A Couple of True Anecdotes About “Range Anxiety” – the Insurmountable Hurdle for EVs

For all the problems that electric vehicles have, the greatest impediment to them being widely adopted is their range limitation combined with the lengthy time it takes to re-charge…if a functioning charger can even be found.

I would like to share two true anecdotes about “range anxiety” today:

1) A co-worker (“Zeke” returned to the office from an out of town trip and was greeted by co-workers who asked him how it went. He replied that it was great until the journey home, at which point he stated loudly, ”I will never, EVER, buy an electric vehicle.” This obviously got my attention, and I joined the group of employees listening as he related his odyssey.

On his flight home, Zeke and his wife were supposed to change planes in Atlanta, but weather caused the plane to put down in a smaller city in a neighboring state. This other city was just under 150 miles away from Zeke’s home, so he and his wife decided to just drive the rest of the way home. They went to the rental car desks in the hope of renting a car, only to find out that they had been cleaned out of all vehicles…except for a couple of EVs. Zeke said he’d love to rent an EV if it could get him home, so they rented him one, which showed a remaining range of almost 200 miles.

It was a hot, Southern, summer night, and with the AC blasting, Zeke soon noticed that the difference between remaining range and the miles to get home was steadily decreasing. When halfway home, he realized this was getting serious, so they turned off the A/C and started searching their phones for charging stations. It was late at night, and they didn’t really care to stop for an hour to get a sip of electricity, but they prefered that to losing all power. Unfortunately, they couldn’t even find any charging stations.

When they reached the outskirts of their hometown, they had less than 15 miles of range left, maybe enough to get home, but not enough to get back to a charging station the next morning. They parked the EV at a facility with a charger, then called an Uber to take them the rest of the way home. The next morning they had to return to the parked EV and spend an hour trying to get some juice in it before finally being able to turn it in at the local rental car office.

*****

2) It was Spring of 2021, and my wife and I had just arrived in Hilton Head for a short getaway vacation when news broke of the ransomware attack on the Colonial gas pipeline. That attack pretty much put a halt to gasoline deliveries in much of the eastern seaboard, including the state of Georgia, through which my wife and I would have to drive to get back home when our stay ended.

I immediately topped off my tank. We were 425 miles away from home. With mostly highway driving, that tank of gas might take us about 400 miles, close enough to home that someone could come fetch us if necessary.

But while in the Low Country, we had also planned to visit Savannah. That round trip would consume about 65 miles of our "range." Plus, we wanted to just slowly drive around Savannah to look at the live oaks, moss, and architecture. That was going to burn more precious range.

We decided to gamble, figuring that even if we burned 100 miles of precious range, we could still make it back relatively close to home and have someone come rescue us if we ran out of gas.

We took back roads to Savannah so as to see the countryside, and as we neared the city, I saw a rural gas station that had gas! I stopped and topped off my tank. We were fully "charged" again. Whew.

Most of the gas stations I saw in the city were out of gas, but I did see one near downtown that had gas, and the cars were not backed up too far. After driving around the city and eating dinner, I drove by that gas station again. It still had gas! I got in line, and after a not terribly long wait, I was able to top off my tank again! We drove the 30-something miles back to Hilton Head and I was relieved at my range situation, but once we arrived, I started thinking about topping off my tank again. There was a station in Hilton Head with gas, but the line was very long, so I didn't.

I obsessed about getting back that final 35 miles of range, so when I woke up early the next morning, I drove over and the station still had gas! I topped it off again.

As it turned out, the pipeline situation resolved before we headed for home, so fueling up on the way back did not turn out to be too difficult after all.

Irrespective of every other reason I despise EVs, I could never drive one simply because of range anxiety. I would be obsessed with keeping it fully charged. That experience of mine in Hilton Head / Savannah was an anomaly, but it would be my daily life if I had an EV, always worried about maintaining range for whatever emergency or trip I must embark on.

I would argue the lack of infrastructure and actual power generation to charge such cars is actually a bigger impediment.

We literally don't have the electricity to charge widely adopted electric cars. We are LAUGHABLY deficient, as in less than half what we would need to even replace half of the cars on the road with eclectic ones.
Our "elite" also don't have plans to expand power generation.

That is the tell about what they intend to do by destroying internal combustion engine production. You will stay close to your home and will rely on the government for any transportation they may deign to allow you.

22 Meh. Hubbie and I have an EV, as well as a gas car. We have found that the EV is about 100 times more pleasant to drive, particularly on longer trips. Range anxiety can be easily solved with the use of an app that tells you where the most conveniently located charger stations are. Also you can charge at your own house so you're always leaving your house with 100%. With the gas car, on the other hand, we do experience a certain amount of 'oh crap I have to fill up the car on the way to work.' And if the kids have been driving it, you never know what they've left you with. EVs solve that problem.

I might not take the EV on a road trip in the middle of absolute nowhere, but we live on the East Coast and there are tons of charging stations everywhere. We haven't had any issues so far and we drive a ton.

24 I was thinking about this today as a matter of fact. On a typical trip to the TXMOME (about 600 miles one way), I usually stop about 4-5 times to relieve myself and top off my tank, even though I can easily get 300 miles or more off a full tank. My bladder doesn't hold out that long.

Even so, it takes me about 10 hours to travel that far with breaks.

If I had to stop every 150-200 miles to recharge, that's going to significantly increase my time if I have to wait 1 hour or more for a recharge, rather than 10 minutes.

33 My very liberal daughter lives in Chicago. She and her hubby decided an EV would be a perfect "in town" car. They aren't stupid despite their political leanings, so checked with an electrician to see what it would cost to set up the charging equipment in their garage. They were told that there was insufficient power line access to set it up at all. They called their friendly Chicago powers to see what modernization could occur and were told NONE. They missed the "chance" to "help". Incidentally, their main vehicle is a diesel!

Yeah, true progressive "transportation advocates" hate EVs.

They've figured out the people will only buy EVs as a second car.

55 Just had a similar experience with a Polestar 2 that ended up being our rental not of choice down in Arizona because the rental company ran out of gas powered vehicles.

The vehicle itself had some nice features and pretty good acceleration. Problem was it was difficult to find charging stations and you never knew how long the recharge was going to take. Given that we needed to have the thing recharged to the initial level it created a certain sense of anxiety as we motored from baseball field to baseball field.

I will never buy an electric vehicle based on that experience alone unless the charging station availability becomes a non factor and they all end up having the quick charge capability of the Tesla.

Pretty sure our current electricity grid in the US can't handle everyone converting to EVs. Add to it that IIRC, all those EV charging stations are gas powered (tanks underground).

Tesla deals with this by providing nearest charging station info in the car and their home charging stations can be solar-powered. However, a non-Tesla EV charger is incompatible with a Tesla charger.

An EV battery pack can weigh anywhere from 500lbs to a Ton.

Swapping that sucker out is not going to be easy.

EV's are stupid and ridiculous full stop.

But if you were going to do something like this, EV's would need a main battery and a smaller reserve battery, say on the order of 100 lbs.

It wouldn't get you much but It might get you to the next charging stations or swap station.

As I said, it's all stupid but we're all about stupid now.

84 My very liberal daughter lives in Chicago.
Posted by: LRob in Ok at October 02, 2023 11:08 AM (TSQkU)

This goes to my infrastructure comment.

Additionally, there is also insufficient infrastructure to supply the necessary additional electricity (that we don't have) to charge said cars. This is before we get to the crappy infrastructure that most cities have, preventing the delivery of the massive power at the end point, necessary for these absolutely stupid boondoggles.

Posted by: Disinformation Expert, Formerly Virginian at October 02, 2023 11:15 AM (N1DT3)

85 @Disinformation, I have a somewhat different take. I think they want to make driving as painful as possible, whatever vehicle it is you drive. They want to force us into public transportation and little apartments close to railroads. That's how they think we should live.

However, as far as EVs and the electric supply, that's not really the issue. There are so many other things using electricity in our economy that adding EVs, even millions of them, isn't going to have a significant overall effect. It could have a local effect in some places that don't have the transformer capacity to deal with it, especially as people are likely to plug in when they get home from work, which is the worst time for demand on the grid: the sun is going down, so solar supply is falling rapidly, while overall demand is still high, so the gap has to be filled by conventional power plants. Plugging in a bunch of EVs just makes the local problem worse.

Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at October 02, 2023 11:15 AM (7B5FA)

86 The fall off of EV users replacing them with ICE is noticeable. I think in certain local/urban situations they are workable if you have a convenient way to recharge them. The problem with urban use is where do you park them and charge them. I don't think there are many places where parking on the street and charging a vehicle is doable.

130 EVs are great...for certain people that meet specific criteria. We have one with a fully charged range of a little over 200 miles. It's plenty to drive around town all day for errands, activities, etc, and (with the charging station at home) can fully charge over night. We still have an ICE vehicle for any trips beyond the immediate area. So, most EVs are either a second car for a family, or...

someone that lives in a very dense urban area that doesn't travel much, except to fly to other places. Again, you need to be able to bring it home to a dedicated charger to keep topped off overnight, instead of scrounging for charging stations (and spending tons of time at them, too).

Posted by: Moron Analyst at October 02, 2023 11:24 AM (JCZqz)

131 The electric grid can't support the EV's now on the road, at least not everywhere. The manufacturers haven't the capacity to meet demand if/when ICE are no longer permitted except under certain circumstances and at great expense. These things are well understood by FedGov, the various utility companies and vehicle manufacturers.

Yet, they persist. Because they know what they are doing.

Once the majority of the population is immobilized other, more draconian measures can be implemented.

136 As to the greenies claims that they aren't heavily subsidized:
Biden admin quietly released study showing green energy receives far more subsidies than fossil fuels

The difference is that if you reduce subsidies for fossil fuels, fossil fuels get more expensive.

If you reduce subsidies for "green energy", the industry collapses.

"Green energy" is utterly dependent on the continuation of fossil fuels.

EVs burn much hotter/longer than regular cars, so they take a lot more work and water to put out.

This is 2023. There have been recent studies. It's really not, on a large scale, that big a deal. There's so much excess capacity on the transmission grid most of the time that it's, by and large, manageable at the large scale.

Where the point of failure is, is on the local scale. The overall grid might be able to handle millions of EVs, say in NYISO or PJM. But Disinformation's daughter's neighborhood distribution grid can't handle the upgrade that would be required if several people had chargers. The actual point of failure is usually the step-down transformer for the 220 volt loop.

Heh. Most of the charging stations here in Central CA appear to be furthest away from the front door, basically next to the sidewalk on a main street. So owning an EV here means that you will ALWAYS have to walk the full length of the parking lot.

Anything to get us American fatasses to exercise, I guess.

Physics rears it's ugly head.

An EV battery is anywhere from half a ton to over a ton.

Imagine trying to swap out the 2500 lb extended range batter pack on the new Silverado?

And then after you've swapped it, what are going to do with it?

You basically have a 2500 lb paperweight that needs to be stored and charged anywhere from 2 hours to overnight in order to be used in another vehicle.

EV batteries are not propane canisters.

It's just all so stupid and ridiculous.

Our new second floor is bigger than our first house.

And we easily have the best cul de sac in the neighborhood since we're pretty much the only people living on it.

I think I'm going to like this house, especially when I successfully lead the annexation effort to move Waxhaw into SC.

Physically and logistically it can't happen at scale.

There are on average 40 million fillips per day, translate that to swapping batteries, you would need to store, charge, remove, install, ship, receive 40 million batteries per day, every day, 24x7, 365.

Yes it is. EVs are horrible for the environment via mining and emissions from power sources, a fire threat, and a subsidy to the upper middle classes who drive them.

If you go by total emissions emitted over a lifetime of a car usuage, upper middle class individuals should be incentivized to buy used cars as it takes at a minimum of 60-70 thousands of additional miles to equal one EV car's total emissions. Change the used car in an equation into a used hybrid like a Prius, you have to get upwards of a couple of hundred thousand miles needed for an EV total emissions to equal that of the used hybrid.

My 4th grade was in a trailer. I was in the highest class of the school from 3rd to 8th, and they were building stuff all around me (including a church, it was a Catholic school). So, I don't have negative feelings towards them at all.

But Dolley also had experiences in trailers for schoolrooms in nowhere Alabama, and she has nothing but poor things to say about her education in them. That has really colored her view of them.

Of course the EV owners charger-blocked can get a little uppity so you may want to send out your scout-blockers armed but since each federal department has piles of guns and millions of rounds of ammunition, no problem!

Well this is actually a compelling thought experiment.

The new rage in EV construction and design is the skateboard platform, whereby the battery, chassis and drive train are built on a platform and the body and all of the rest of vehicle internals are bolted on top.

This fails as wells logisitically and financially as you then need to swap all of the most expensive assembly out and swap the most expensive assembly in.

Again, the math, physics and logistics simply do not work.

Yeah, the part no one talks about is that, unlike in an actual Mustang, you've got a limited number of those trips to the well before you're not getting home.

So the one selling point they push so hard is also something you should avoid doing.

384 National Park Services article:

Sacrificing for the Common Good: Rationing in WWII
Doing Their Duty by Doing Without

In part, "Americans received their first ration cards in May 1942. The first card, War Ration Card Number One, became known as the “Sugar Book,” for one of the commodities Americans could purchase with their ration card. Other ration cards developed as the war progressed. Ration cards included stamps with drawings of airplanes, guns, tanks, aircraft, ears of wheat and fruit, which were used to purchase rationed items.

The OPA rationed automobiles, tires, gasoline, fuel oil, coal, firewood, nylon, silk, and shoes. Americans used their ration cards and stamps to take their meager share of household staples including meat, dairy, coffee, dried fruits, jams, jellies, lard, shortening, and oils.

Americans learned, as they did during the Great Depression, to do without. Sacrificing certain items during the war became the norm for most Americans. It was considered a common good for the war effort, and it affected every American household."

Let's say there had to be one-third spare for every vehicle operating. That's probably generous; there would probably have to be more than that. But let's stick with 1/3. Who pays for it? Obviously, it's the vehicle owner. You just increased the cost of an EV by more than $10,000.
