When did the campaign to subvert America's children start?

(Note: This is an open thread, but there is an Israel war thread just below this one.)

When I was a child, my uncle invited my parents to bring the family to stay for a few days in one of his two beach houses at Playa del Rey, California. This was before Marina del Rey was built, but after oil was found on the strand in nearby Venice during the 1930s, leading to the building of oil wells, which come with some bad smells, etc. So the neighborhood had seen better days.

The house he lived in was impressive and pleasant despite the deterioration of the neighborhood. Both houses might be considered mansions, though not large ones. Knowing my uncle, he probably got them at bargain prices, anticipating future re-development. The original development was built starting in 1921 in an area of sand dunes (rather than in the nearby wetlands) and attracted buyers like Cecil B. Demille. I don't know if anyone famous lived in the house where we stayed.

Anyway, we got there late, having gotten lost in Venice. We passed spooky oil wells. The house where we were to stay would probably work for a made-for-TV Halloween movie -- lots of wood paneling, small servant's quarters and strange narrow hallways and stairs. And being near the airport, there would be lots of foggy days for moody beach filming. Odd how they build California airports in the foggiest spots possible.

There were no lights in the neighborhood to speak of when we arrived, and there were hints that vagrants might have taken up residence in some of the houses.

Because Playa del Rey is near Venice, some of those vagrants could have been Beatniks. My parents did not approve of Beatniks. Dad went through the house with a baseball bat before allowing us to enter. I know -- He shoulda had a revolver.

When I think of Venice, California, I think of Beatniks as well as the later phenomena of Muscle Beach and widespread homelessness. Come to think of it, the Beatniks' romantic view of vagrancy may have something to do with today's homeless epidemic in Venice.

Anyway, Mark Judge has written a piece in which he recounts a night when a member of The Beat Generation started the campaign to subvert America's children as part of the larger culture war. I'm not sure it was THE night when the culture wars started, but it is definitely creepy:

"We'll get you through your children!"
That was the threat shouted by the poet Allen Ginsberg on a fateful night in 1958. Ginsberg was yelling at Norman Podhoretz, a conservative writer. The confrontation between Ginsberg and Podhoretz is described in Podhoretz's 2001 book Ex-Friends: Falling Out With Allen Ginsberg, Lionel and Diana Trilling, Lillian Hellman, Hannah Arendt, and Norman Mailer.

The Podhoretz essay, called "My War With Allen Ginsberg," has stayed with me for years. I occasionally re-read it for its tremendous foresight, wisdom and power. It is a first-hand account of a night in America in which the modern culture war began. With elegant and at times very funny observations, Podhoretz predicted everything that would happen for the next 60 years: How we got to be a country awash in drug abuse, transgenderism (and the medical malpractice that comes with it), mental health problems, anti-Americanism and atheism. It's the genesis of our modern cultural and political nightmare.
Most chilling is the part where Ginsberg, a drug user, sex addict and member of NAMBLA, the North American Man-Boy Love Association, bellows at Podhoretz: "We'll get you through your children!" That very thing has indeed happened. It's why Podhoretz, still going at 93, has never forgiven Ginsberg, who died in 1997. The left did in fact get back at square America by corrupting her children.

Allen Ginsberg was a member of NAMBLA???? We're still getting conflicting signals about whether the LGBTQ movement (Queer Theory and Transgenderism in particular) has anything to do with pedophilia.

The conflict between Podhoretz and Ginsberg was the result of the young Podhoretz slamming Ginsberg and his fellow writers. In the 1950s Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs and others formed a literary group that would become known as the Beat Generation. The Beats thought America was too conformist. They advocated drugs, sex, poetry, alternate spirituality, and long car trips. Their most famous member, Jack Kerouac, wrote a book about their experiences called On the Road -- a book Podhoretz panned. The Beats were hugely influential to the counterculture of the 1960s (despite the fact that Jack Kerouac turned conservative late in life and hated hippies, but that's another story). For young people it became cool to listen to jazz, do drugs, and aimlessly leave home without much of a plan. The Beat influence was still huge when I was in college in the 1980s. . .
He went on: "For nearly four hours that Saturday night in 1958, Ginsberg and I had at each other on all of these issues."
Podhoretz argued in favor of George Orwell's idea that normal people living normal lives of faith, freedom, heterosexuality and steady work can have just as much joy, adventure, and thrills as anyone outside the system -- in fact maybe even more, as they would avoid drug addiction, sexual diseases and perhaps even hell itself.
Years later Podhoretz would come across a park in Massachusetts dedicated to the Beats and make this observation:

We were memorializing Ginsberg and Kerouac, thereby further weakening our already tenuous grasp on Orwell's saving fact, and abandoning the field once again to these latter-day Pied Pipers, and their current successors, who never ceased telling our children that the life being lived around them was not worth living at all.

Well, Mark Judge can pick that night as the start of the culture wars, including the war against children, but like it says in the movie poster at the top of the post, EXPLODING FROM ALLEYWAYS AND IVORY TOWERS . . .

You don't hear about it for several reasons, but here's a biggie:
The educational establishment doesn't care. They don't care that students can't read because they are operating under a different definition of "literacy."

When you think "literacy," you think "the ability to read and write." When the educational establishment thinks "literacy," they think "political literacy."
Our schools aren't teaching kids to "read" as you understand it. They are teaching kids to "read and write the word to read and write ***the world***," to paraphrase Paulo Freire, the Brazilian Marxist who's "literacy" program was imported into the United States in the 1970s and 80s.
In the highlighted case-pictured here - the educational establishment doesn't care that 0 kids can read with proficiency. "Learning to read" isn't their learning objective. That's why everyone hasn't been fired. They only care that kids are learning to "read" their "lived experiences" through a radical political lens. . .

Would Paulo Freire's program for political literacy have been accepted in the USA without the prior influence of the Beatniks (and others)?

The Beats first captured attention, I think, in a curious drug-addled cross country trip on Kesey’s Magic Bus. The spook agencies had done their work on many of these guys, ostensibly trying to dose prisoners of war with psychedelics for mind control or interrogation. Naturally they took up where the Nazis left off.

I can’t prove it necessarily, but the fact that 10 years later the entire baby boom generation was dosing on millions of hits of LSD was not an accident, it was not an organic grass-roots phenomenon, it was a psy-op on a huge demographic. And very successful.

17 I've never been able to conclude (to my own satisfaction) what the goal of dumbing down kids is; whether it's a means to an end, or an end in itself. Illiterate, uneducated young people are far more easily swayed into negative behaviors than more knowledgeable examples, but also tend to be far more hard to control, generally. They are very difficult to discipline.
Maybe an endgame for this kind of thing is found in Cambodia, where all descriptions are of Khmer Rouge 'soldiers' being utterly ignorant kids, armed and turned on the adults. I guess I've never established to my own satisfaction what, exactly, the people who do these things to kids and young people really want their victims to *be* or to *do*. It's hard to believe the goal is as basic and simple as pure power, but maybe that's all it is.

26 I seem to recall there being magazine subscriptions geared towards the "tweens" in the late 60's and through the 70's. Monthly rags with some sort interest theme... like sports, science fiction, outdoors, chemistry/electronics/etc. Those tended to be for the boys and I remember having a couple different subscriptions during junior high.

I guess my point is that while my parents had Time, Newsweek and the National Geographic there was material geared for kids that wasn't filthy pr0n.

I lived just south of the airport for a long time and would often run down Pershing into Playa and then back in the beach strand. I find it depressing that this subversion has been going on my entire life and I never really noticed until recently. I guess it’s gotten more blatant. My kids years in public schools (in LA County!) were fairly innocent and mine were completely innocent mumble-mumble years ago…

I received my questionnaire from the law firm handling my case against the Boy Scouts of America. Holy Hell, there were a lot of questions. I already had a narrative of events written out a couple weeks ago that took me a good part of Labor Day weekend. Probably spent eight hours on that. Spent another couple hours last night cutting and pasting and answering the questions. Some of the categories were masturbation, oral sex, sodomy (you know what I'm trying to avoid saying), pornography, assault, and probably a few more that I was able to N/A. I really don't know how the BSA thinks they can continue to exist with the alphabet letter people either trying to infiltrate or take them down. Anyway, I did my part to advise them that my abuse only occurred because there was a regularly scheduled meeting for all Scoutmasters at a certain time every week at summer camp and the pedophile knew he'd be alone. The BSA did fire his ass and drove him off the reservation that same night. But there's no 'Undo' button in life.

When Bill and Bernadine resurfaced he put them into Chicago universities. All Mike's ideas are direct from Pol Pot and Ieng Sery. And he's been hugely influential in Chicago schools.

My issue with Mike over Bill is that while Bill was setting off pipe bombs and having orgies, and *talking* about killing 20% of the population, Mike was in Cambodia actually doing it. The North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) was founded in 1978. One of its founding members was David Thorstad, a writer and gay rights activist. He was also an admitted paederast and believed in the rights of men and boys to engage in sex, regardless of age or age difference. The aim of the organisation was to advocate for the legality of such relationships and it did so by suggesting that the rights of children were being infringed through the existence of age-of-consent laws.

46 Back in my neck of the woods in Ohio, we had a lot of houses like the one described above. Hell, even my parent's final house had a strange, narrow stairway going to a small room in the attic. This was off a pantry, so probably for a mid level family's servant. We had a couple abandoned ones which were great for showing girlfriends the "haunted house". Key to that is have a large ball bearing in your pocket, drop it loudly and let it roll. Free squeeze.

Politically, the coup de grace of the beatniks (IMO) was the ouster of Goldwater in the mid-60's. I (think) I remember my dad saying, "hm, they got him."

Educationally, a lot of high school crap textbooks came out of University of Chicago. Their "new math" concepts completely ruined me for math. To this day. I resent the h*ll out of them.

And yes, the T in lgbTq+ is certainly pedophilic. Otherwise, why the 'drag queena story hour" BS. Why "family friendly" [spit] "pride" parades.

I was thinking about his recently, my experience in the Boy Scouts was relatively mundane, and our leaders were all parents of the boys... except one.

It never occurred to me to think anything sinister of it, but it was odd that this one guy was involved in our troop. My assumption I guess, was that if the parents were ok with him being there, then why wouldn't I.

The only "odd" thing I recall is on a camp outing, he would take showers out in the open, completely nude, seemingly luxuriating in the experience. My circle of friends thought it was funny as hell, but what I don't know, is if any of the more vulnerable boys, ones we tended to ostracize, may have had other... experiences.

I have older siblings, and I watched my parents fight like hell for the souls of their children. By the time I got old enough, I had a hard lesson learned, watching my siblings go through the gauntlet, and it allowed me... for the most part, to get through those years relatively unscathed.

Other kids who didn't make it... it's hard to say it, but I think it's mostly because they didn't have parents like mine.

It's possible the "rumblings" were coming from those who didn't WANT a healthy adult male in that role.

The women who went into teaching, some of whom are obviously wonderful people, had a massive influence on boys, and equally obvious is that much of that influence was/is negative.

A little later, I go to the head and every stall is occupied by the little people, squatting on the seats. I mean feet on the seats. Must of been twenty. We had a priest in our parish, he sure did like spending time with the yoots. He was young himself, and I guess, good looking. He was definitely "cool."

As he spent time with the kids, at one point I believe my dad must have said something to him, about how he was interacting with my older siblings. One day I came home from school, and there was a "peace offering" from this priest. I thought that was "cool" too, just like he was (I was too young at the time to be of interest to him).

My dad sent it back. Which I didn't think was "cool" at all.

Years later, he was convicted of several crimes. Sex crimes.

Yes, and that's an incredibly salient point. The ones who gravitated toward "leadership" positions, all over the place, often were the ones most messed up by either absent parents (fathers, mostly), or parents who were messed up in all sorts of ways.

The rest of those who fought the war (over there, and the mothers at home), tried to raise their kids right, and those who started dominating the culture had all this influence over the "good" kids, because everything they were doing was "cool," and everything the squares were doing was not.

My latest plumbing solve is almost unbelievably stupid. I have an older tub and use a diverter on the tub spout. Handheld shower heads, the ones with the hose off the threaded insert type, are now required to have a vacuum breaker IN THE HOSE FITTING! so when you turn off the water, the bottom fitting spouts the entire contents of the hose out of the fitting itself! It's a deliberately designed-in leak! And they all have them now. I had to order a hose for 'pet washing' online to get one that doesn't have that idiotic 'valve'. I couldn't even drill it out, they're built like an aerator with a sleeve valve.
Anyway all 'fixed' now.

At this point, there's a distance between us, and it is one of my greatest regrets, that I couldn't keep her insulated. I don't know what happened to her. Really, I don't. I know it was "something," but whether a particular incident, or just the slow creep of other people influencing who she became, she and I don't seem to have anything in common anymore, and she doesn't seem to care.

I could never tell my father about the Boy Scout abuse. I didn't want to tell him the same organization that honored him with Order of the Arrow was infested with perverts. In this case, I disagree that it is a usual cycle of generational complaints because according to what I find, the people involved in this 'cycle' have destroyed entire civilizations. The Khmer Rouge didn't Rock N' Roll, they murdered every rock musician they could find. This is not a usual shaking-a-fist-at-the-clouds moment. A lot of the people here are like that (here calling a spade a spade) but this time, it's not so simple and the degeneration is real and it is serious.
