Well, I spent three hours in the shop. Plan was to put the newly-electrified windshield wiper assembly into the '49 Ford. "Oh. Might as well put away these tools." "Oh, while I'm at it, might as well sort and toss this scrap metal. Might as well clean the workbench."
Time well spent, though. Ongoing and future projects will proceed faster. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 30, 2023 04:24 PM (/ZeBz) 4

What are you working on
Making a homemade apple cider press. Two middle grandkids just helped me pick about 5 gallons of apples. The other 35 gallons or so grandpa is going to have to pick. I have a couple of neighbors down the road who have trees that they don't pick. I'm going to offer to trade apple cider for their apples. It takes about 3+ gallons of apples to make a gallon of cider. I figure I can make a decent one with about $40 of materials. The trolley reminds me of the Fenelon Place Elevator in Dubuque, IA. It was built in the late 1800's by a guy who wanted to be able to get home quickly to take a nap at lunchtime. Still running to this day.

Not exactly a hobby but I have to replace the screen on this very old vinyl window. I had to get a wide putty knife to force it against the spring clips to remove it. The screen is completely shot and it's a vinyl screen. I have replaced one screen in my life and it was an aluminum one but I wasn't able to get it as tight as I liked so I may go with vinyl again.
I have discovered that there is wool pile weather stripping and the window is old enough that it's just nasty and most of the fuzz is gone. But the vinyl is solid enough and replacing Windows is really expensive so I'm going to try to get it back into shape. I will probably have to get some help for some of these windows but it's very hard these days to find anyone who will work on relatively small jobs like that. They just want to take out the old windows and completely replace them and charge you thousands of dollars! Posted by: Beverly at September 30, 2023 04:56 PM (Epeb0) 21
Lent my car to a friend for probably a month, so half the garage is empty. In my shed, I have a '75 Honda CB200 I bought coming on twenty years ago thinking I'd 'fix it up'. Been leaning (indoors) on one wall or another ever since. Over the years I've bought gasket packages, carburetor parts and stuff, that has got to be somewhere in the house.
I'm thinking of getting to it. The one thing I learned growing up in a car dealership family is I'm a lousy mechanic, but hey, it's sunk costs already. Posted by: From about that Time at September 30, 2023 04:56 PM (4780s) 22

Spent parts of the last week cutting foam for my hard side pistol case.
Cutting foam to a certain depth (as opposed to cutting all the way through) is just not cool. I have yet to find a way to make things even and neat along the bottom. When I get back from my trip, I'm going to use multiple layers - cutting through the thick layer, then gluing it on top of a thinner layer - to get the same effect. That will also include putting a layer of rigid plastic underneath with some parachute strap or similar attached, so I can more easily lift out each layer of equipment. Hot knife doesn't work on the polyurethane open cell foam. It goes in the drawer with other not-right-for-this-job tools. Posted by: GWB at September 30, 2023 05:22 PM (69JzL) 36
A couple of weeks ago the topic of pipe smoking came up. Anybody investigated that a little bit? I'm sipping some Sir Walter Raleigh in a Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipe. Normally I use briar pipes, but I have this one, and I thought I'd try it for the first time in a while. Going well. Cobs are good all-around pipes. I just have this image of myself as a doctor/engineer/writer, and a briar pipe goes with that. A cob is much more the Hooterville sort of thing.
(Yeah, I know about Gen. Macarthur's cob pipe. Still it's a hard image to shake.) Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 30, 2023 05:23 PM (omVj0) 37
Any morons whose hobby involves wildlife? This morning after checking the mail I was heading back to the house and saw a fuzzy ball on top of the gable of our very tall, very pitched roof. Had to get the binoculars out to see what it was. Me, Husband, his sister, and her husband (who happen to be visiting with us) all concluded that it was a porcupine. What??!!

Ontario Man Eats 50 Carolina Reaper Peppers In Record Time
Before trying to set a Guinness World Record by eating 50 of the hottest chile [sic] peppers on the planet, Mike Jack set up a picture frame featuring two photos atop a table at a brewery in London, Ontario. One was of Terry Fox, the Canadian activist who in 1980 ran more than 3,300 miles on an artificial leg to raise money for cancer research. The other was of Thich Quang Duc, the Buddhist monk who doused himself in gasoline and set himself ablaze to protest the Vietnamese government’s alleged persecution of Buddhists. “I just look at these two people who have done these incredible feats, and it just makes what I’m doing kind of smaller and more manageable,” Jack told The Washington Post. Then, Jack turned his attention to 50 Carolina Reapers, which themselves hold a Guinness record for being the hottest peppers on the planet. His goal: to eat them as fast as possible. When the plate was empty, six minutes and 49 seconds had elapsed, Guinness World Records announced this week. https://tinyurl.com/mr36bbdt Posted by: andycanuck (krqg6) at September 30, 2023 05:38 PM (krqg6) 41
Got my 3 liter flask with a T/S 24/40 joint from China. *Sigh*.
I already have the 3L heating mantle and magnetic stirrer unit to put the flask in. I will put my Vigreux column on the flask, and prepare oil of cedar from the extracted fluid. I have no water fixtures in the shed, so I am using a submersible pump in a big water bath to cool the vapors with a Claisen head and a Liebig condenser prior to solvent reaching the take-off round-bottomed flask. I recycle the distilled solvent. I do have a repurposed vacuum pump if needed, but not the big lab model. An $8,000 Rotary Evaporator system would make this a lot easier. Alas, married. My sweat equity is still mine to use. Posted by: NaCly Dog at September 30, 2023 05:41 PM (u82oZ) 42

Also, got offsets put in for upper and lower sideband so they can shoved through the same filter (not at the same time). Sometime this week I need to do a parts order so I can begin integrating all of this into the radio. Posted by: Blanco Basura - Z28.310 at September 30, 2023 05:50 PM (Bd6X8) 53

58 AutoCad will let one use fusion360 (CAD program) for free, lots of tutorials available. One can export the object for 3D print from Fusion360. 3D printers come in all price ranges. The main choices are FDM (fusion deposition modeling, uses a filament and a hotend to deposit model in layers) and resin printing (good for making figures). Matterhackers, Amazon have a bewildering array of 3D printer choices. The first step would be to master basic CAD skills and in the meantime look at intro tutorials on 3D printing.

Posted by: Sock Monkey * Ne Obliviscaris at September 30, 2023 04:36 PM (Z+GVF) I have found the pressing goes easier if you use a good grinder to make the pulp. After a lot of tries and advice from Notsothoreau, I finally broke down and bought a 1/2 hp insink-erator garbage dispose-all, and it is a glorious thing to use and it makes pulp that squeezes down very easily. It mounts in a sink I salvaged and have mounted on scrap 2x4's I had a neighbor weld some angle iron onto a 3-1/2 ton tongue jack for me, and I use an arbor made from 4x4's and 2x4s mostly. I bolted it on the side of a platform I had salvaged, and I use a pressing basket made from 2x4s and perforated plumbers tape. I made a tray from plywood and UHMW cutting mats. Grinding the apples is the important thing. I have used an Ideal chopper, and the shredder from my Kitchenaid mixer, and someone's apple chitter, but the garbage disposal is the bomb. Don't let it run too long and don't let it get jammed or unbalanced or it will overheat and trip the breaker. Then you have to let it cool down.
You can also use it to make pear juice too. Then you will need to find lots and lots of jars or buckets to keep your juice in because it will make juice really fast. Posted by: Kindltot at September 30, 2023 06:58 PM (xhaym) 97
Didn't intend for it to become a hobby.
At a garage sale I bought an AFX slot car race track for the grands. Set it up only to have them insist I use every piece of track. They love it and today discovered my unopened *sniff*1984 Tyco track I've had for 20 or so years. Well Papa is a sucker and I now have both (well over 150 feet) slotcar tracks taped down to an 8 foot by 8 foot cardboard box on a bed in the spare room. Banked curves, loops, 3 high horizontal loops, it's pretty awesome. Two separate tracks that can be used at the same time. I go looking for a couple more cars and a controller to replace the one the youngest grand yanked the wire out of and DAMN! Those cars start at about $30 each, some in the $90 range. I had probably 40 or so cars and at least 8 tracks when I was a pup, got at least one a year on B-days and Christmas from about 8 until 14. I sold the whole shebang for $20 when I left for the Army. That video about making sailing ship cannons ain't nothing. My Dad and Grandfather got their mitts on a bronze ship propeller shaft that was about 6" in diameter and about 10 feet long. Two days later of shop time they had perfect man-o-war ship's cannons about 4' long with 3/4" bores, iron wood frames and brass ringed wheels.
We shot my Dad's copy off over the 4th a few times on year, and about 30 minutes later a police helicopter showed over the house with patrol cars driving around setting up surveillance posts. We were mightily amused. My Grandfather met up with a bunch of his pals one fall at a cabin in northern Minnesota to go deer hunting. Remarkably nobody had a gun but we did have one cannon. After a certain amount of drinking these goof balls set the cannon under the neighbors cabin (they had post foundations) and waited around for the the neighbors to come home. My stoic and most responsible GF lit the fuse. I had no idea a 65 yo could move that quick. After a moment dead silence in that cabin everyone ran out of it screaming and yelling. I have never seen six guys in their 60s happier as those six were. Posted by: lost in space at September 30, 2023 07:27 PM (kmEPs) 112

I can tell these cannon stories because the statue of limitations expired decades ago.
On another occasion my dad and his best pal were at the best pal's house drinking a few beers out the carport. For reasons that were never disclosed these two knuckle heads had the cannon. Of course, a few beers later, it made perfect sense to set it off in carport of this suburban home. They made one mistake: they left the door leading to the house open and the concussion blew into the house and blew out the front windows. My Dad's pal's wife was not amused when she came home. Not at all. We were but not her. Posted by: lost in space at September 30, 2023 07:39 PM (kmEPs) 117

Should have been no great trick for Mr. Trolley to connect the cable via an Otis ratchet, a hook underneath that engages the cross-ties if the pressure on the cable is suddenly relieved. That would make a good start. Just imagine having to grab for the "brake" lever as the thrill ride started -- and then having it engage nothing but a derailer device. Any thought given to where that aircraft cable's end is headed after it parts? They get going pretty good. Dang.

Watched the painting video - it's no secret that I universally hate this "pick up a brush and get started" stuff.
I taught myself to draw and then paint the old fashion way, long hours of training, failure, more training. You built a real painting by first drawing the painting you intend, correcting mistakes, etc. and thus making the image that you need before transferring the cartoon (funny, but that is what it is called) usually using a light velum and charcoal laid over a canvas that has already been layered in gesso and then sanded fine and then painted over again in lead white (not easy to get these days) before your transfer the image. It's like building a fine piece of furniture - you have to do the work to get a fine piece. Once the cartoon is transferred, you get to proceed to an underpainting (usually done in umber) and then proceed to layer on color, usually two or three coats allowing each coat to dry first for a week, then scrape down, correct problems - and reapply - then let the oil paint dry for 3 months or more before coating the painting with a clear damar varnish.
