Tech News

  • Linda Yaccarino had a tough interview at Code Conference 2023. (The Verge)

Kara Swisher, who is to tech journalism what a poison arrow frog is to a petting zoo, invited former Chief of Censorship and Propaganda to speak immediately before Yaccarino, who is merely a poor choice for CEO rather than an out-and-out Stalinist.

Also, this being The Verge, the article concludes with a rant about Elon Musk.

  • Micron is sampling 32Gb DDR5 RAM chips. (AnandTech)

These will allow regular desktop PC to scale up to 256GB of RAM, and laptops to 128GB. Shipping in volume next year.

I thought these would take longer - which is why they started with 24Gb as an intermediate step - but things seem to be moving along pretty quickly.

  • Food delivery robots are feeding video to the LAPD. (404 Media)

I won't say that snitches get spray paint, but.

  • There's now a 4TB model of Samsung's high-end 990 Pro SSD. (Tom's Hardware)

At $345 list price it would have been a bargain less than two years ago, even for a DRAMless QLC PCIe 3.0 drive, and it's a DRAM cached TLC PCIe 4.0 drive.

Worth considering if you're building a high-end PC.

After ten months a year of will-sapping summer here for the last two decades -- and before that, working outdoors in that nastiness -- some winter sounds like a good change. And no hurricanes. (Yes, the area has tornadoes, but they are brief and affect only a narrow band as they go, not entire regions. And no flooding.)

If nothing works out there, maybe Kansas. Salty and Notsothoreau seem to like it quite well. SD is really pushing to get people to come work there, though. And it doesn't have state income tax and doesn't tax SS; not true of KS.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 29, 2023 04:54 AM (omVj0)

30 Besides, if you have a ridiculously long period of one season, you appreciate the other(s) when they happen. Here I appreciate the brief fall/winter after the crushing heat of summer from March to December. In SD, I guess I'll appreciate the summer when it occurs.

A non-humid fall sounds . . . well, it's hard for me to imagine. The other nice thing is that a day's drive from, say, the Sioux Falls area would bring me to Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills. I view it as the same deal as the polls/2024 election. This is all for show. I think the GOP plan to sideline Trump entirely, but maintain the façade of business as usual. So when Trump is thrown in jail, they will go along enthusiastically with the plan. In that context, it does not matter what the viewership is. They are reinforcing the 'normalcy' of the abnormality.

No, see, we are having our usual collection of idiots and non-entities. Choose from the list of idiots we give you. Pay no attention to the thugs beating up grannies over there. Send $5 to combat the dems!

This was why the decision NOT to just burn down the party by Trump but try to use the apparatus was a fatal error. If you say 'I have all of the voters' but leave the bureaucracy in place, they will just try to take away your ability to do anything in order to preserve their jobs. Create a new party, take the voters with you, and these accommodationists wither on the vine.

Butter, yes, absolutely. Margarine is an abomination that I refuse to allow in my home.

I guess I'm asking what would occupy all that space if it's not movies and music and such? I assume any high-end computer would also have LOTS of RAM to crunch numbers if you're doing 3D modeling or fancy graphics work, so disk-swapping shouldn't be an end goal.
