I had to get into my daughter's old Rav4 by climbing under the car and reaching with an assortment of socket extensions and poking blindly until I finally got the hood to pop. Took about 2 hours. Then I got to start the job that I was getting under the hood for to begin with.

Had the same issue with a 2006 CRV. The hood latch was bent and it could only be opened with a crow bar.
That car was a tank. And the previous owner had some kind of sound system installed. Removed the speakers but kept all the wiring. Buying a car full of post-market wiring previously owned by a Muslim... could have gone worse. Also, even though it was a Honda, it was actually built in England; which means it had a bunch of oddball quirks that make repairs interesting. The AC died about seven years ago and I decided I could do without it rather than spend $2K on a whole new system (Fck the EPA). I gave it to my niece two and a half years ago with 206K miles on it and it became her senior year high school party wagon. It would still be running, except during its last service, the coolant didn't get topped off and the head gaskets cracked. Shame, really, hell of a car. Used to own a 95 Suburban with the same hood release lever. Was on I-75 doing about 70mph thru Toledo, and while fidgeting in my seat to get my lower back to relax managed to hook the lever with the toe of my boot. I heard the "click" as I saw the hood come up a fraction of an inch before the safety hook caught it. Few things in everyday life will jumpstart one's heart as quickly as this.

I remember having this issue on a different GM and a "hack" solution was finding the cable underneath near the pin that holds the hood down to the latch. You cut the cable and attach a handle to it. You'd have to crawl underneath the car and pull down to release the hood, but it worked.

Also awesome is late teens Honda Civic trunk release. Dead battery, so let's get the jumper cables from the trunk, right? Wrongo. Push button release has no power to work. No lock on trunklid for metal key. Remote won't open trunk either. Luckily I was at home and had other jumpers.
Checked the 300 page CIVIC user manual/warning book afterwards. Apparently popping an obscure, concealed plastic cover behind the rear seat headrest reveals a lock that will pop the trunk with the metal key. Fuck these clowns with flaming chainsaws. Some vehicles have a secret little hidden cable attached to the latch that you can grab and pull to release the hood or trunk if the regular mechanism breaks. Sometimes you have to remove the fender liner or something to get at it.
It's easy enough also to add a piece of wire that you can pull on to release latch and run out the front grill somewhere convenient. I hope this satisfactorily addresses your first world problem with a third world solution. Posted by: fd at October 01, 2023 02:20 PM (vFG9F) 53

Because the cable goes forward through the frame, above left wheel well, then curves right to the hood release? Way back in the Before Time, I used to drive a 1970 Ford Maverick.
It was old when I bought it by the way, for $700. Anyway I was trying to start it and the office parking lot and I couldn't get it to shift out of park. I pop the hood and I saw what I soon realized was the gear shift linkage waving impotently in avoid. Nothing to connect to. So I called a friend of mine who's boyfriend worked at a diesel truck shop and he told me that cotter pin probably fell out and asked me if I had a bobby pin in my hair. It just so happened that I did and he told me to look for something else that didn't have a mate that had a hole through the end of it and I put the bobby pin through that and spraddled the legs as two fellows from the office watched me in some amusement. Then I got into the old bucket and drove it home triumphantly. Reminded me of that old scene in The Honeymooners when Alice and Trixie fixed Ed's car with a bobby pin. A couple of days later I went over to the diesel truck Depot and they put in a cotter pin for me at no charge. But that's in the old days when everything was pretty mechanical. Now that everything is wired and electrical you can't do s*** with it. Posted by: Beverly at October 01, 2023 03:16 PM (Epeb0) Posted by: JT at October 01, 2023 03:19 PM (T4tVD) 133
