Top Story

Now that production has finally caught up with demand and the Raspberry Pi 4 is actually available to buy again they've announced the Raspberry Pi 5. (Tom's Hardware)

The BCM2711 CPU in the Pi 4 has been replaced with a BCM2712. Which doesn't tell you much, but they've gone from a quad Arm A72 at 1.5GHz to a quad Arm A76 at 2.4GHz, which should be about twice as fast.

The 4GB model will be $60 (up from $55), and the 8GB model $80 (up from $75).

I just got a Pi 400 - the model built in to a keyboard - but they haven't announced a Pi 500 as yet so I can live with that.

The Pi 5 also has a single lane of PCIe 2, so you can add an M.2 SSD with a suitable adaptor. It will only run at around 400MBps, but will still be better than the current micro SD cards.

A new design for small desalination systems could produce tap water that is cheaper than tap water, or possibly vice-versa. (MIT)

It's a passive solar-powered system, which is to say it works from the heat of the Sun rather than photovoltaic cells.

It's not remarkable - we've had such systems for decades - except for the fact that it apparently just keeps working once you set it up, without any maintenance.
Minisforum's new tablet is coming early in 2024 with a 14" 2560x1600 screen, a pressure-sensitive pen, the Four Essential Keys - which I have never seen on a tablet PC keyboard before - and a Ryzen 8000 CPU. (Liliputing)

Ryzen 8000 will bring Zen 5 cores with major performance improvements, but that doesn't mean that this Ryzen 8000 CPU will be Zen 5. Ryzen 7000 models variously have Zen 4, Zen 4c, Zen 3, and even Zen 2 cores.

It's a mess.

The laptop looks good though.

Which isn't great, but doesn't rewrite the laws of mathematics either.

I never played that one. Picked up the series at... Curse of the Silverblades(?) and never went back. I remember as a kid, I was captivated by the idea that you could transfer characters between games. It just seemed like such a cool idea. Still does, I guess. When you could transfer story progression and choices in the Mass Effect series it was very cool.

I am trying to think of other series that did this. Not coming up with much.

Pools of Darkness was the fourth game in the series. You could level up characters to 40th level. I often leveled up characters as a ranger or paladin up to 39th level then dual-classed them as mages or clerics up to 40th. They were then insanely powerful.

He as sentenced to thirty years in prison for another violent crime about 7 years ago, but all except 14 years was set aside. Then under the change in state law, he was required to be released earlier yet, under supervision.

Interestingly, the woman that he is suspected of brutally murdering was a staunch and vocal supporter of the more lax judicial system of Baltimore.

IOW, she was murdered by one of the folks who's release from prison she fully supported.

Billingsly is also now charged with the brutal rape of another individual just a week prior to this murder.

At certain locations in the state, like grocery stores, you can now buy as little as a single bottle. But you can't pay for it at self checkout, there's a separate register for that, and they want to scan your drivers license for proof of age.

I always tell them, no license, I don't drive. I mean look at me, do I look under 21? They invariably are able to override that requirement.

181 There are state stores that sell wine and liquor, where you can buy a much as you like, and they'll even track down and order in anything you want that they don't have, for no extra fee.

Then there's beer distributors that sell cases of beer, and occasionally mix-n-match six packs, but they can't sell wine or liquor.

Grocery stores can sell up to two regular bottles of wine or four six packs at a time, but no liquor.

Is not nearly as bad as it once was here. It's weird, and it's still a heinous cartel, but not *as* bad.

206 Kentucky is weird. In Indiana it seemed like a given liquor store, if it was a good one, would get in different stuff from time to time. I remember the Big Red #1 in Bloomington (it is a small chain in college towns in Indiana) you could find all sorts of nifty stuff.

There was a bitter cherry liquor that I liked from the Czech republic, so when I moved to Kentucky, I went and asked at the liquor store if they could order it. The guy pulled out this giant book and looked and then said 'if it's not in the book, we can't get it.' There is or was some sort of liquor consortium here.

Which is kind of hilarious for a state known for moonshine.
