The Morning Report — 9/26/23

heilhosertrud.jpg

Good morning, kids. To butcher the immortal words of Elvis Presley, Canada is now "a hunka-hunka burnin' . . . " something or other. Emphasis on "Hunka."

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has been heralded as this century’s Winston Churchill: the brave leader of a nation fighting for freedom against a tyrannical, fascist foe. This makes it all the more embarrassing that he, along with the 338 members of Canada’s House of Commons, were made to stand up and applaud one Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old veteran of the “First Ukrainian Division,” also known as the “SS Galichina,” or the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division, a military unit of Ukrainian volunteers for the Waffen SS—the paramilitary arm of the Nazi Party. The unit has been accused of war crimes in Poland, though news reports are as yet unclear on what the nature and extent of Hunka’s involvement was or the circumstances of his arrival in Canada.

Whatever we find out, one thing is certain: Vladimir Putin was handed a massive propaganda victory. He can now point to footage of a NATO member’s parliament honoring a Waffen SS veteran as proof of his narrative that Russia is fighting a sacred war against Western-backed Nazis in Ukraine. How could such a sorry spectacle have taken place? The answer points to contradictions within Canada’s multicultural settlement.

That paragraph kind of clues you in to the author's attitude. For sure, Vladimir Putin is no choir boy. But the proposition that this is a propaganda victory for him misses the actual point, rising to the level of straw-man argument. Contrary to the real propaganda pumped out by western media, the Holodomar notwithstanding, Ukraine is not and has never been pure as the wind driven snow. A tragic, bloody history of pogroms, massacres and ethnic cleansing against Jews, Russians, Poles and others has been whitewashed in service to pushing an anti-Putin meme, the goal of which is to push the west into war with him.

Continuing with the more cromulent aspects of what otherwise is a good essay:

Canada is home to the largest Ukrainian population after Ukraine and Russia, and the high-profile presence of Ukrainian-Canadians in Canadian politics has led to a “special relationship” of sorts between Kiev and Ottawa. Canada was the first Western nation to recognize Ukrainian independence in 1991, and as soon as that independence was imperiled by Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Canada became a pillar of support for Ukraine’s cause.

At the center of this connection is Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, the most powerful figure in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet after the prime minister himself. A Rhodes Scholar and fluent Ukrainian speaker, Freeland was surveilled by the KGB on a student visit to the Soviet Union in the 1980s and marked as a nationalist agitator. She has followed in the footsteps of other prominent Ukrainian-Canadians, and may achieve even greater fame on the world stage as a possible future secretary-general of NATO. . .

. . . It is fair to say that Ukrainians have contributed mightily and positively to the making of modern Canada. Yet the celebration of diversity can also be a double-edged sword, particularly when constituent ethno-national identities are indulged to the point of overlooking—or even valorizing—aspects of them that may be radically at odds with the promise of harmonious multicultural coexistence.

Last week, an international incident drew attention to the presence of militant separatist movements within Canada’s Sikh community; such movements keep alive the ancient hatreds and political loyalties that immigrants are ostensibly supposed to leave at the door when they accept citizenship in a new country.

A militant nationalist undercurrent also runs through Ukrainian-Canadian political identity. For instance, journalists in recent years have pointed to monuments honoring Ukrainian Nazi collaborators scattered across Canada, put up by Ukrainian nationalist groups. Freeland’s maternal grandfather became the subject of controversy in 2017, when Russian-affiliated media amplified reports that he had been the editor of a Nazi collaborationist newspaper in occupied Krakow. While this had nothing to do with Freeland herself, it highlighted the unsavory historical baggage that many postwar Ukrainian immigrants brought with them from Europe. . .

. . . Multiculturalism can mean many things and may indeed contribute to the shaping of a larger national story. Yet the fashionable idea of Canada as a post-national amalgam has often caused its leaders to celebrate (with unexamined enthusiasm) various sub-national or extra-national identities, treating these as stand-ins for the solid, unifying symbols and standards of previous ages, and blinding them to the serious moral and historical complexities that come with the promotion of diversity as an end in itself. The unfortunate tale of Yaroslav Hunka’s standing ovation is only a particularly egregious illustration of how thoroughly the Canadian political class has been captured by this attitude. It won’t be the last.

Sorry, Michael Cuenco. Multiculturalism only means one thing: civil war and death. Yes, in the vast majority of cases, it's healthy to be part of a community and with a diversity of people and cultures from different lands. I grew up in Brooklyn in the 60s and 70s and I consider myself lucky to have had a youth where I experienced exactly that. The difference is all those kids and their parents all lived or tried to live as Americans. Does E pluribus unum ring a bell? Contrary to leftist dogma, assimilation does not mean abandoning one's heritage. In fact, their mission in decrying assimilation and doing everything in their power to prevent it is to destroy the American heritage, culture, history and traditions. Ditto what their Komrades up in Kanuckistan are doing.

The name Chrystia Freeland should ring a bell. Flashback to February 2022:

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday that Canadian federal law enforcement has already begun cracking down on the financial accounts of individuals suspected of aiding “Freedom Convoy” protesters.

Freeland said in a press conference that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has referred a number of accounts that have subsequently been frozen by financial institutions. Freeland deflected a question on whether the frozen accounts belonged to any of the donors to fundraising campaigns on the platforms GoFundMe and GiveSendGo.

One reporter at the press conference questioned Frreeland: “I’m just wondering if the bank accounts will be targeted of individuals who donated to the GiveSendGo and GoFundMe campaigns? Are they considered designated people under the Emergencies Act, meaning that their credit cards could be cut and financial services are targeting them as well?”

Freeland responded: “The names of both individuals and entities as well as crypto wallets have been shared by the RCMP with financial institutions and accounts have been frozen and more accounts will be frozen. Crowdfunding platforms and payment service providers have started the registration process with [the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada].”

The deputy prime minister, who also serves as Canada’s minister of finance, skirted the question on if the frozen accounts belonged to those donors who gave through GoFundMe and GiveSendGo. The latter was hacked earlier this week and the data of tens of thousands of Freedom Convoy donors leaked online.

“In terms of the specifics on whose accounts are being frozen, you now have the regulations. The financial service providers have those regulations now, as well, and they, working with law enforcement, will be making the operational decisions,” Freeland said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act Monday as a “last resort” to break the protest that has continued in downtown Ottawa for roughly three weeks. The act, in addition to empowering law enforcement, authorized banks and other financial institutions to unilaterally freeze the accounts of any individual or entity suspected of aiding the protesters.

Days after the announcement and amid fears of a run on the banks, some of Canada’s largest financial institutions experienced an outage. The cause of the blackout has not yet been determined. The disruption blocked Canadians from accessing their bank accounts online for about an hour Wednesday afternoon.

Freeland does it like a boss. Hugo Boss, that is. Political persecution and retribution against enemies of the regime. And here she is, along with Fidel Castro's bastard, giving a standing ovation to a commander from the Waffen SS responsible for butchering innocent people during World War 2.

Funny how we don't hear any more that all this talk about the Azov Battalion being manned by anti-Semites is pro-Putin propaganda because Zelensky is Jewish. Turns out that that is exactly the case since it is historical fact that that unit was created as a part of the Waffen SS as an indigenous Ukrainian anti-Soviet formation. And this decrepit 98-year old Hunka shit was part of it or otherwise associated with or worked alongside it.

Heil, hoser.

Not to be picayune but it would be more accurate to describe the Waffen SS as the military arm of the SS. These were SS units that were under German military command and there were separate units designated for nations-at-arms such as the Ukrainians, Lithuanians, and others.

Of course all of them the SS, Waffen SS, and German military were all criminal organizations engaged in war crimes.

53 @18/Hadrian the Seventh:

Quebec pushed an independence agenda for decades. I think we're up to three close-but-failed referendums on the subject now. Turns out the people in Quebec want to remain in Canada and consider themselves Canadians, but the politicians? Not so much.

The politicians figured out they could continue to grift from the feds while still passing unconstitutional laws via the Charter's "Notwithstanding clause". Here's an example:
https://is.gd/2iBPqv

While English and French are Canada's two official languages, and while every other province in the country makes sure service in French is easily available, Quebec has been going hard in the other direction trying to turn anglophones into second class citizens. The way to stop that nonsense is to pass reciprocal law and regulation in every other province that does the same to French and then have all the premiers tell the Quebec premier, "We'll stop when you do, but we're happy to continue pushing your nose into your own crap. Your call."

They will, of course, NEVER do this.

60 NFL Films does a Super Bowl summary every year after the big game. In the good old days, they’d be narrated by John Facenda “The Voice of God”… I well remember the summary of SB XX when the Super Bowl shuffling Bears wiped out the Patriots. It was a blowout of epoch proportions. At one point in the film, it describes the Bears eruption of points and shows a shocked fan (probably a Pats fan) gaping at a scoreboard which read 44-3.

This reminds me of the GOP primary “contest”… Trump is the Bears running up the score; the rest are the Pats. Every time I see a new poll he has a bigger lead. And a recent “respected” poll has him ahead of Biden 52-42 in the general causing panic in the press. He just might win ladies and gentlemen…

_______

That is very questionable. It is entirely arguable that your upbringing was in a very unusual time and place, historically. And it's also arguable whether "...assimilation does not mean abandoning one's heritage."

That MAY be true; I'm not saying you are wrong. But there is a good case for the opposite view. We may be paying the price for those happy times. Certainly we are paying for many of the things that made us Boomers happy when young.

Yet as soon as scientists identified Rice’s whale, also known as the Gulf of Mexico whale, two years ago, there was a problem. There were hardly any left. With only about 50 remaining, the whale is one of the most endangered marine mammals on Earth.
Now efforts to protect the whale are running headfirst into that other behemoth off the Gulf Coast: the offshore oil and gas industry.
The Biden administration has proposed protecting a massive swath of ocean from Texas to Florida, potentially restricting fossil fuel activity in one of the nation’s top oil-producing spots. Already Biden’s deputies sought to remove millions of acres within its habitat from an offshore oil lease sale originally scheduled for Wednesday.

It went on for so long that it is hard NOT to draw a parallel with anything ELSE in history.

_______

He's got a point, but misses one too. One reason the Dems get to use simple narratives is that they have the press so completely on their side. The complication of our task is largely created by their talking points put out against everything we say.

The real point about impeachment is the hearings, and what can be brought to light. Of course any actual impeachment will go nowhere. The hearings should absolutely be drawn out beyond the next election.

I don't like it, but that's the game we have to play.

143 Changing demographics following the aging of the baby boomer generation are pushing the labor force participation rate down as an increasingly large portion of the population is retiring, leading to a labor force shortage that could boil into a crisis as fewer workers support a greater number of people, according to the WSJ.

Bidenomics is going to fix this problem, as older workers realize they can no longer stay retired and have to return to work. The real issue for the labor participation rate, IMO (ie, opinion and no real facts here) is that younger demographics would rather take the dole than work.

Philadelphia Inquirer NEWS, Sep. 12, 2023

Ukrainian Catholic Church to cover up monument to Nazi SS unit in Elkins Park
“The Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia values its relationship with the Jewish community," Archbishop Borys Gudziak said in a statement announcing the plan.

In part, "The leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the Philadelphia region said on Tuesday that the church would temporarily cover up a 30-year-old cemetery monument in Montgomery County that is dedicated to a unit of Ukrainian soldiers who fought for Nazi Germany during World War II.

The decision comes about a week after an Inquirer article described the history of the monument at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in Elkins Park. The large stone cross honors the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the Schutzstaffel — the Nazi military branch often referred to simply as “the SS.”

It was erected in the mid-1990s, but apparently had received little attention until recently. Jewish groups over the last week have condemned the monument and called for its removal.'

See article for more.

As reported by LifeSite in 2010, the nine-member Romeike family sought refuge in America due to their native country’s strict rules against parents educating their children within the confines of their own home. They were granted asylum in the U.S. by a Memphis judge at the time.

In Germany, the Romeikes had been subjected to criminal prosecution for simply raising their children outside the state-approved school system. In Bissingen, district of Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, they faced exorbitant fines, forcible removal of their children, and possible imprisonment.

I think Tony Romo may be even better than Madden in quick insightful comments on what happened in a play.

It's always amusing to hear him say something like "Oh...", as the offense or defense lines up, then predict exactly what the Off/def is doing and why it's wrong. And then exactly what he said happens.

Football is gay. By their own marketing, I mean.

I will consider watching sports again after a minimum of five years of nose-to-the-grindstone, no bullshit good behavior from the leagues and the teams.

They don't have it in 'em. Even if they're (finally - more than half a decade on) gently pushing back on the kneeling crap, that comes after they went in on the gay stuff. The NFL can't keep its dick out from under its own feet.

283 Russia's response to Canada honoring the SS was to point out that the western educational system has failed so thoroughly Americans and Canadians have no idea what happened in WWII and could assume a Ukrainian "resistance" fighter was on their side.

I'm kind of thinking that's actually not the case here. I'm sure most of the Canadians pols lauding this SS member had no idea of the history of the region and what this guy and his military unit were doing sure.

But do I believe that the guy that invited him didn't no? Hell no. This was intentional at a bunch of level;

1) Let the Ukes know the west wants them to let their NAZI freak flag fly
2) Let the Russians know the west does want to destroy their country
3) Let the historically literate members of the west know that the Western elites have made peace with fascism and have adopted the attitude of "not everything the NAZIs did was bad"

Similar to how the same people can poll on if it's a concern that Trump is under investigation and being indicted on four charges. It's set up by them for their purposes.

293 From the NY Post:Students at 40% of Baltimore high schools failed math proficiency exam

None of the students at 40% of Baltimore’s public high schools tested proficient on the state math exam given this past spring — with a staggering three-quarters earning the lowest possible score, an alarming report revealed this week.

At 13 of the school district’s 32 public high schools, 1,295 students of the 1,736 who took the exams scored a 1 out of 4, meaning they were nowhere close to proficiency, Fox 45 reported.

“This is educational homicide,” Jason Rodriguez, deputy director of the Baltimore-based nonprofit People Empowered by the Struggle, told the outlet.

The results were shockingly low even at the city’s top high schools, where just 92 students, or 11.4% of the 809 students who took the exam, tested proficient, the outlet later found.

326 @"Perfessor Squirrel": Hadrian has already given you the correct answer on how picking a Prime Minister works in a Westminster Parliamentary system.

I'll add this: In our system, we don't elect MPs to represent our views to Parliament (though many erroneously believe we do.) We elect MPs to represent Parliament's views and opinions back to us. MPs do care about getting re-elected though so sometimes they listen when their entire riding gets their back up. They tend to only really listen at election time though, and even then, they're probably just lying. No, we don't have a "recall" mechanism. MPs can only be replaced in a by-election if they die, step down voluntarily, or are convicted of a crime and then the House can oust them.

Yeah, it's messed up. This explains much, though.

I was a big follower of the NFL before it went BLM and gay and then I dropped it cold turkey.

I did see a game in a bar last year though and...what the hell? The quality of play overall was terrible, playing defense gets you flagged, and even the broadcast of the game itself was boring and pathetic.

Not by a longshot. I may occasionally long for the days when I could listen to a Chiefs' game on radio and actually enjoy it, but the NFL is still such a virtue-signalling woke mess that they can go pound salt.

Also: I got out of the habit of attending, watching, or listening. I don't see me being suckered back into that. It really was a tale of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at September 26, 2023 09:24 AM (qPw5n)

Agreed! Plus, it recently came to my awareness that in an average NFL game, there is approximately 11 minutes of actual game action (snap to whistle). 3 - 3.5 hours to watch. 60 minute game clock. 11 minutes of actual action. There are MUCH better uses of our time!!

386 At one point Mussolini sought French/British support to stop the German Anschluss with Austria.

He reasoned that Austria was in his sphere of influence and that allowing Germany to add it would encourage Germany to become more aggressive.

France and Britain feared war and backed down of course. Mussolini took from this that Germany was the strong horse but even so he didn't enter WWII on the Axis side until he was pretty sure Germany would defeat France as he was trying to play both sides...

Delaware County Council unanimously voted to adopt a resolution denouncing hate crime in Delaware County during their public meeting on 9/20/23.

"Whereas, Americans of Polish descent have contributed much to the heritage of Delaware Co.." (Oh! Someone accidently used that template.)

In part, "Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that We, the County Council of Delaware County, urge all residents to speak up against hateful behavior so that we may create a more just, peaceful, and inclusive society which will benefit everyone. Be it further resolved that the County Council urges our state lawmakers to promptly pass the package of anti-hate crime bills (including HB 1024, HB 1025, HB 1026, & HB 1027) currently being considered in the Pennsylvania Legislature."

Meeting Agenda, Minutes, & Video show two women, one specifically Re: Agenda Item 7A, & another at +/- 24:00, attempting to make meaningful comments regarding defining hate crime laws. +/- 57:00, there's a snide (not unusual) 'culture wars' comment from a Council member.

So no more Fetterperson jokes, PA!

399 It's a subtle but important difference, but the prog plan isn't to drive the west into war against Russia. It's to drive Russia to war against the west. That's because non-leftist domestic opposition to all of this is one of their goals - the progs don't actually give a shit what happens to Ukraine, but care intensely about how this is used to their own political advantage, and in some cases about the demands of their Chinese backers. (China fucking loves this, for obvious reasons)

The choice of Azov as a symbol is deliberate. It's perfect for splitting the domestic electorate on the issue because while one side runs around with their pants on fire screaming about Nazis, the progs get to point out to the other side that a decent chunk of the battalion's current leadership is Jewish.

As usual, people are getting played.
