The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

I know it's like dunking on a retard, but Reason magazine...the official mouthpiece for stoners across America...has distilled their amazing lack of knowledge of the reality of drug abuse in an insanely ignorant article claiming that Oregon's Drug Problems Were Not Caused by Decriminalization.

Just as alcohol prohibition exposed drinkers to the potentially deadly hazards of bootleg booze, drug prohibition forces users to rely on black-market products of uncertain provenance and composition. Measure 110 did nothing to address that problem, which has led to record numbers of drug-related deaths across the country.

That trend was fostered by the proliferation of illicit fentanyl, a result of the economic incentives that prohibition creates, and by the government's crackdown on pain medication, which drove nonmedical users toward substitutes that are much more dangerous because their potency is highly variable and unpredictable. It is therefore not surprising that opioid-related deaths kept rising after decriminalization in Oregon, which saw increases similar to those recorded in California and Washington, neighboring states where low-level possession remains a crime.

Except what was the point of making drug use legal if not to decrease their destructive effects on society? I thought the whole idea was that if addicts weren't constantly harassed by the cops they would magically become productive citizens and drug crime would be a distant memory?

Was it simply the first step to government supplying those addicts with their preferred drug? And maybe a nice apartment with a pool and a gym with hot trainers in spandex? And a universal basic income?

These stoned idiots don't understand that many illegal drugs create anti-social behavior simply as a function of their use. And even for those drugs that don't, they diminish pretty much every bit of human drive except to get more of the drug. That doesn't sound like something government should be promoting.

The comparison with alcohol is even more idiotic. The vast majority of alcohol users function perfectly well in society. And society has been learning how to manage alcohol for several thousand years.

Do we really need to introduce a dozen more drugs with unknown long-term social effects? That seems...stupid.

Yup, it's TOTALLY COOL that we have zombie drug users frozen or shuffling on the streets, their lives a complete waste and now a drag on their communities. I'm sure there's no one in their lives who loves them and desperately wants them to get clean as they slowly/not so slowly kill themselves with their addiction. ANd no, the cartels and wide open border are totall not making bank now that they have unfettered distribution + legalization + state injection sites + Narcan everywhere*!

*This is the latest solution - not to stop the drugs coming in, not to stop the drugs being openly sold, not to cure the addition. No, the solution is to use our tax money to supply every state institution (schools, libraries, injection sites) with Narcan so that they can revive these addicts to shoot up some more and OD tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that.

While this is true, up until a couple of hundred years ago, alcohol content was very low. Beer was 2-3% alcohol wine was 6-7%. Even vodka in the olden days was around 15% alcohol. Hard liquor like we have today is relatively new.

Your UBI will pay for your pod, the rent on your appliances and electronics, your internet access and utilities, and nothing else. You will have to work a little bit to buy your own bugs, bedding, drugs, etc. But while you're not working, you can do your drugs and/or hang out in the Metaverse to escape your ghoulish reality.

Well, you cannot control drugs by focusing on the supply side. Every dealer arrested simply means more profit for the ones not yet caught.

Arrest and jail the users, and implement a "three strikes" policy. Third conviction, death penalty, or life sentence to a labor camp.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 28, 2023 11:12 AM (pYaTk)

73 I suspect that legal, doctor-prescribed opioids are the teeniest, tiniest part of the problem. And TPTB have decided to crack down on this portion of the problem because it's much easier to keep doctors from prescribing opioids than it is to deal with the real problem.

Kind of like the way it's easier to "do something about" gun crime by restricting legal, responsible, non-criminal gun owners than it is to keep criminals from shooting people. Or ticketing reasonable people for silly infractions while ignoring arson and looting.

In the meantime, patients in pain are denied effective and reasonably safe relief because dirty fentanyl is flooding across our border.

Except they don't quietly OD in mom's basement, they are on the streets, they are camped out in front of businesses, homes, taking over parks. Is it any surprise that the homeless problem has grown with legalization? After CO legalized pot the homeless population tripled. With that came the crime, all the places that are no longer safe to walk by, now the bigger piece of the state and city budgets allocated to deal with them (cleanup, Narcan, now housing thanks to our new idiot mayor).

Communities don't prosper, can't survive when so many of the residents (new arrivals or whatever) are not contributing -- not working, sucking up resources, taking up public space and making everywhere unsafe.

But now that Portland and other places have tried it and are descending into hellscapes, it's beyond idiotic and getting to the level of pure Evil to say that it's still a Fine Plan.

86 Was it simply the first step to government supplying those addicts with their preferred drug?

Part of me would be entirely fine with doing this. Build a sanitarium, sterilize them, provide them with access to treatment options to kick the drug should they choose to avail themselves of the option but otherwise give them all they want until they're no longer a burden on society.

I can see the logic in the argument that broken people won't get fixed by treating their flaws as a crime. Further, broken people cannot be made to become whole. Not by anyone this side of God's throne, at any rate.

Several officials in Portland are now saying that everyone in Portland should carry Narcan, given the significant probability that you'll come across someone ODing.

The neat part is that the Narcan shot is now part of the high.

A local sheriff was discussing it a couple of months ago. The druggies are chasing the dose that will kill them and they can be brought back. Apparently it's the closest thing to "the first time" that the junkies can experience.

So they want the Narcan hit, too. And we pass it out for free.

Narcan is NOT cheap, and the physical trauma of ODing and then Narcan is intense. Sure, it's good if it's a fluke thing - some dumb kid experimenting - but if this is a hardcore addict where is the mercy is inviting them to city injection site, watching them OD, reviving them and then repeating this day after day? At this point, yes.

But in Tennessee OxyContin and TNCare (Tennessee's failed effort at HillaryCare) combined to produce a horrible epidemic of opioid abuse and cottage industry.

TNCare users could fill a 30 day supply, paid for by the state, and resell on the black market for anywhere from $5 to $20 per mg.

All they had to do was walk into a "pain clinic", select the frowny face that indicated intense pain for their back, and viola! They were in business.

Either the junkies get themselves off the shit, or they die. And these idiot women get rid of their repeatedly abusive, violent scumbag man, or they eventually die too.

You can't help people who not only don't want to be helped, they refuse to be helped.

152 Sure, it's good if it's a fluke thing - some dumb kid experimenting - but if this is a hardcore addict where is the mercy is inviting them to city injection site, watching them OD, reviving them and then repeating this day after day? Narcan is not the solution and it is a huge cost.

156 I thought the main purpose of legalization was to decrease or eliminate the black market. The criminalization of drugs increases the price which then makes the drug trade attractive to criminal organizations.

Of course, theoretically making drugs easier to get and more plentiful by legalizing them would increase demand as the price is lowered. Which would make drug use increase. So just from a supply/demand standpoint drug use should go up with legalization.

I started taking Delta 8 which is byproduct of the CBD hemp refining process. Frankly I find it superior to alcohol in every respect. It does have a slight psychedelic effect which has been a wonderful experience for me. It hasn’t been psychologically nor physically addictive (I’ve been taking it for over a year but sometimes I go a month or two without it with not ill effects).

When I attended that college, a student would very occasionally be caught using heroin.

That got you immediately expelled - the college was worried enough about social contagion that immediate expulsion was viewed as the only way to protect the other students.

Now they simply accommodate it.

In the case of weed, it wasn't fully legalized just decriminalized and heavily regulated to the point that if you try to run a legit shop you're having to charge higher prices than the black market to cover your higher overhead, compliance and administrative costs, permit fees, taxes, and all that shit. So the government gets its cut - and still send the cops in to fuck with you and take your shit if they want to - and the black market remains.

218 Yes, fentanyl is an act of war on the US by China. We did not participate in the Opium Wars. That was Great Britain and France.

We were involved in the opium trade (not the wars, at least directly), but at a much lower level than the Brits, who didn't want the competition.

The British had already discovered a great market in southern China for smuggled opium, and American traders soon also turned to opium to supplement their exports to China.

In the 1850s, the United States and the European powers grew increasingly dissatisfied with both the terms of their treaties with China, and the Qing Government’s failure to adhere to them. The British forced the issue by attacking the Chinese port cities of Guangzhou and Tianjin in the Second Opium War (1857–185. Under the most-favored-nation clause, all of the foreign powers operating in China were permitted to seek the same concessions of China that Great Britain achieved by force. As a result, France, Russia, and the United States all signed treaties with China at Tianjin in quick succession in 1858.

That is not true. Many use to stave off withdrawal, particularly opiates. And for people who are regular consumers of, say, marijuana, sharing a joint with friends is hardly going to get you high. Not that anyone should be driving if they've had any marijuana, but they shouldn't be driving if they've had any alcohol either. I have had intense pain events that needed oxycodone four times in my life. The only time I could get it was after foot surgery. The other times I was told to take ibuprofen and acetaminophen, which did nothing. The docs were not allowed to prescribe something that would work.

Fortunately, the last time, I had a leftover oxycodone. A single tablet was all it took to break the pain cycle and I didn't have to take any more pain meds for the rest of the episode. I experienced no impairment and I'm pretty sure that single pill was better for my liver and kidneys than max doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen for a week.

Although just because I wouldn't abuse pain meds doesn't mean there aren't other people who do. But I don't understand the appeal of taking them unless there's pain to manage.

284 It's probably analogous to the whole bullshit "hate crimes" doctrine.

The drug itself isn't the problem. The damage it does to the user isn't the problem. It's the added on effects that come when it's taken to the point of addiction, or when people lose their judgement and do dumb shit.

Hate isn't the problem. You can sit there and hate whoever you like. But when it becomes assault or harassment or vandalism or even murder... *then* it's a problem.

So.... Prosecute the problems, in the exact same proportion as if they had nothing to do with "drugs" or "hate". Rip a bowl. Cook a shot. Hate Cape Verdeans. Whatever. Just don't break shit or hurt people.

Committing a crime is still committing a crime, even if you wake up full of love and joy and sober as a... thing that's really sober (whatever, shut up), and still decide to smash your car into an ashram for no particular reason.

I keep asking the questions .. when the states decriminalize other drugs, who will pay for their Master Comprehensive Plan, when the studies eventually show the destructive "side effects" of the drugs.
The states were a co-conspirator in the tobacco plan taking some of the money. As for these other drugs, the states get full responsibility.

This argument about drugs never really goes anywhere because nobody can agree on the definition of drugs.

Alcohol is a drug under the strict definition of drugs. So is weed and so is heroin. But they are different kinds of drugs with different outcomes. The real question is which drugs do more harm than good to society and should be controlled not should drugs be banned.

That doesn't matter. The judge can do whatever he wants. He might get overturned in a higher court but maybe not.

The judge got the result he wanted. It's going to cost Trump a lot of money regardless. It will likely curtail his business regardless. Even if overturned doing business with Trump is now more risky and has less value. Same with banking. Can we loan money to someone whose business can just be disappeared? A good portion of Trumps net worth is the value of NY real estate. If he is banned from doing business in NY then that value drops precipitously.

The administration of the program preventing you from getting the pain relief via a strictly controlled prescription creates six to ten jobs for that one RX.

I tried one Tramadol and was so woozy I couldn't walk without support and vomited within a half-hour. Oh, and that Tramadol did nothing for my pain. I guess it distracted me a bit by making me miserable in other ways.
Posted by: Emmie at September 28, 2023 11:54 AM (Sf2cq)

I am always surprised by people who have that response, because I was prescribed tramadol once for a sprained muscle and found it to be the most worthless drug I've ever taken. Now this is not something I should have tried, but out of frustration I even tried taking 3 at a time once and felt nothing. For whatever reason, I'm completely immune to any effects from it.

Not comparing alcohol and drugs as I believe that alcohol is another drug. I know of many functioning adults with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). They function fine until the time comes when they can't anymore. I grew up with alcoholics in a upper middle class home with both parents being professionals (USAF pilot and school teacher) and life was a series of walking on eggshells and could be explosive leaving a lot of scars. This is just based upon my personal experiences but not being 29 anymore, I see AUD all around me and it only increased with COVID lockdowns.

441 439 Wrong, DBC. Decriminalization was to stop the state from punishing people for exercising their right to fuck up their own life. You are amazing. On one hand you can recognize the destructive influence of the State meddling in our lives. On the other hand you seem to think the State can solve social problems instead of making them worse.

You can't have it both ways.

442 And it appears from that excerpt that they don't even blame the drug use, itself, but the bad drugs that are out there. As if a meth-head is just gonna live their lives happy and carefree as long as no one adulterates their meth.

What maroons.

Wut? FDR repealed prohibition in 1933.
