Mondays Are Fundays! Cafe

From nurse ratched, it's already National Sea Otter Awareness Week again. And I don't have a thing to wear! Well, except for all of these sea otter pelts but I'm not sure you can wear those after Labor Day.

Here's a baby otter, but I fear it might be a river otter. Because it's in a river.

Otter sneaks into a cat family.

Goats play King of the Tree.

Chinchilla battle-stance.

Doggaroo.

No one ever says "...with the grace of a panda."

This is what I call "a cute dog."

This is what I call "A Glamour Dog."

i like you, i must eat your head now

Add up all the f*cks in the universe. Now put a negative sign in front of them. That's the number of f*cks this turtle gives.

Fastpaw.

Another glitch in The Matrix.

imma f*** with your s*** now. Because I must.

Tua, the Miami QB, was a generational talent that was maybe the most natural, most fluid, most intuitive QB I've ever seen play in real life. And I couldn't care less about any of them in the NFL.

>>I looked at a 2022 F150 today. V8, 4wd, crew cab, 95k miles! $44k. I think I'll try to get another 100k out of what I got.

That's a lot of miles for such a late model truck at that price.

I had my Sonoma from 95 until it gave up the ghost in 2018, picked up a 2005 Colorado for 3,500k.

It had some front end damage that was easily repairable with a couple of trees and some chain put another grand or so into cosmetics, tires and shocks, tuneup.

It's been extraordinarily dependable since then.

I'm about to refresh the front and rear suspension components.

That should cost a bout a grand in parts.

Total cost 5500 bucks or 91 bucks per month over the last 5 years.

I've done all of the work myself except for two things, since I don't have a lift, I simply could not get enough leverage or heat onto a bung to break a rust frozen O2 sensor and because of the way the rear bumper is mounted on the frame, I could not install rear hitch, even with assistance.

The truck needed to be at working height and two other people or a hitch stand were necessary to jack ass the hitch, spacers and rear bumper into position to thread the blind nuts and bolts through the frame and the sides.

Plus, as bats are not known to suffer from cancer, their DNA is being studied for possible clues on eliminating it.

--

That reminds me. Data came out. All of those inexpensive non-prestige somewhat affordable EVs everyone wants and that's saving the buyers $12K in gas or whatever each year?

They're driven 6k miles.

"Tesla drivers come the closest to matching the driving behavior of traditional car owners,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “Without Tesla, the average miles per year for EV drivers would drop from 9,059 to 6,719"

iseecars.com/most-driven-evs-study

The average distance people actually use their cars and trucks each year? 15K.

Cost savings, the "maintenance" BS, etc? It's based on 15K

We already knew it was all a lie. And it's only getting worse as people learn more and reject them even harder.

It's of course BS. No EV can do 15K+ miles/year without disproportionate fleet support. I've said here I could totally do an EV because I drive about 1K miles per year. For long trips I rent ICE cars. That doesn't make EVs practical for well, anyone who drives to, you know, Do Real Stuff. When I did contracting I did a minimum of 20K miles/year and often more than that. 30-40K wasn't unusual in my field. A major reason I don't drive much anymore is I just got sick of it. Burned out.

Back in car phase of my career, we used a cool study. It showed what the payback needed to be to spend more for the diesel vs gasoline version of a vehicle. The authors had learned avg km per year, and the cost delta for diesel fuel for every euro country.

The results consistently showed 3 years as the sweet spot. Any longer, and more gasoline variant sold.

Those Surface Pro's a bit finicky but I finally succeeded with the installation. It was actually easy. Boot up using the flash drive, nuke the partitions on the SP, run 'Install Linux Mint' on the desktop, it runs, it installs, the end. Yay!

I heard a good story from some colorful folks in my 'woods/'hood who were carpooling in a station wagon to work at the Byron Nuclear Plant when it was being built. They saw a dead raccoon in the road, a big one, and picked it up and tossed it in the back. Well, it was not dead. While they were driving on the highway it resurrected and attacked them all until one brave soul grabbed it and while being all cut up threw it back out onto the road, probably to sucker another victim. They appeared at the guard gate and the lady told them they could not enter looking as they did.

172 While heading to my Dad's Sister's house in San Diego from our home in LA along the the South bound "5" back in the day (late 60's) when a simple guard rail planted with Oleander bushes was all the separated the North and Southbound lanes, I was in the back of our Ford stationwagon yet watching the road ahead and my dad was in the fast lane busting 70 + when no less than a Flaming red Irish Setter burst through the bushes maybe 50 yards ahead planting it's feet 2 feet into our lane causing my dad to whipsaw to the right while my mother and siblings screamed in abject terror and your poor writer got slammed into the opposite back window..(seatbelts nnnaahhh). Dad just as quickly corrected back into the fast lane and my ears were pierced with screaming epitaphs such as I have never heard. We made it to my aunt's house without any further drama and I saw my dad head straight to my aunt's wet bar before we even unpacked.

Thankfully...no setter roadkill for dinner.

173 The actual 'punchline' was the carload of residents from my current city pulling up to the guard shack all cut up and covered in blood and having the also-Northbound Southern White Lady tell them, "Y'all ***** can't come in here like that."

So they drove all the way back, patched themselves up, and drove all the way back AGAIN to Byron to go to work.

This comment can be deleted, it is really what I was told.

Sorry, I wandered away for awhile. I'm okay, thanks for asking.

Small bit of happiness: Mom has been talking about the trip we took to the mountains last weekend. She'll ask me to prompt her for details, but she remembers that we went, and brought up how much she enjoyed the rocking chairs on the cottage porch. Since December, it's unusual for her to remember or talk about recent events. This gives me hope that we can (and should) still travel a bit when we can.

182 Biden Admin “finally found asylum-seekers it opposes”
Romeike family faces deportation after 15 years in the U.S. after losing their asylum claim based on religious persecution in Germany. If only they had illegally entered through the southern border and disregarded the asylum system completely, they would have fared better

183 The Biden administration doesn’t care. It wants this.

Yet at the same time, the administration is moving to deport a family that had a viable claim for asylum and went through the process, winning at the hearing level then being denied on appeal.

We covered the Romeike family starting in 2013, when the Obama administration fought their asylum claim and sought to have them deported, DOJ seeks deportation of family persecuted in Germany for homeschooling:

The Romeikes are devout Christians from Germany who wanted to homeschool their children because of what they perceived as the secularist agenda in German public schools.

In the United States, the right to homeschool ones’ own children is accepted, although frequently mocked by the left. The homeschoool movement is thriving in the United States, but in Germany it is illegal, a holdover from Nazi-era law.

The Romeikes fled to the United States in 2008 after they faced mounting fines and the potential of imprisonment. The Romeikes sought asylum, and were granted that asylum by Immigration Judge Lawrence O. Burman in a January 26, 2010 decision after a hearing which included not only the Romeikes but also expert witnesses on hom

191 The Romeikes are devout Christians from Germany who wanted to homeschool their children because of what they perceived as the secularist agenda in German public schools.'

In the remote Serbian mountains where I had to visit a Church from the 1400s (long story) the local news was a middle-class Afghan Muslim family who fled the Taliban and had gotten asylum in Germany. The parents were so upset by Euro culture they applied to Serbia and immigrated. Big writeup in the local rag, the parents were very happy and their 5 children were reported to be as well in an Orthodox culture.
The locals were like, "Why would anyone move here?"
It was pretty funny

What a shame. If you don't mind doing your own wrenching they are actually pretty good cars. When I got mine it was roached. WalMart oil, broken exhaust, missing grille, just on its last legs. I learned it needed quality parts to even run at all have paid for Mobil Ultimate gas for 5-1/2 years; synthetic oil; the T-Rex semen the power steering pump takes; etc.
Still USD$118/mo. for 5-1/2 years. If it had been mechanics...

207 Cheapest and best way to travel is to get a 98-04 Town Car, Grand Marquis, or Crown Victoria. They are cheap to fix, lots of reasonable parts, and the engines will go 400k or more. The only thing that kills them is rust, so you have my sympathy if you live in road salt country. I grew up there. After 05 they started adding modern stuff to fail like drive by wire throttle and the last couple years they have huge head rests that ruin visibility. Still decent but go for the earlier ones.
