Married People Are Happier

new research from the University of Chicago that suggests that “Americans who are married with children are now leading happier and more prosperous lives, on average, than men and women who are single and childless.” And not just a little bit happier, either. According to Wilcox and Bass there is a “startling 30-percentage-point happiness divide between married and unmarried Americans.”
In other words, the happiness divide and the marriage divide are largely the same. Sam Peltzman, lead researcher behind the University of Chicago paper, isolated all other factors among thousands of respondents, including income, education, race, location, age, and gender. He concluded that “the most important differentiator” when it comes to who is happy and who is not is marriage. “Low happiness characterizes all types of non-married,” Peltzman writes, whether divorced, widowed, or never married. “No subsequent population categorization will yield so large a difference in happiness across so many people.”
In other words, the decline of marriage over the last several decades is causing the decline in happiness, or at least most of it. As Peltzman told The Atlantic in statistical hyperbole: “The only happy people for 50 years have been married people.”

Wait, you mean something that has been a cornerstone of all human societies for as long as there have been humans works? Imagine that.

I thought it was just milk, y'know? Good for baby because that's who it was designed for, but I didn't realize how it changes day to day and even hour to hour to best nurture the baby. Fascinating stuff.

If you fled into the woods at 18 when the communists came to power 1917, you’d be 90 by the time the Berlin Wall fell, and 92 by the time the Soviet Union collapsed.

It's an interesting look at something I hadn't considered.

Yep. DIL was a marketing exec at Yum Brands. Big job. She left them, #1 son left his consulting gig and I was retired. She, my son and I looked at dozens of offerings before settling on a upscale pizza brand. DIL didn't have any interest in pursuing a Yum Brands franchise. Every one of them have some pluses and some minuses. I sold my interest back to them after 18 months or so.

They now have 12 stores with options for another 10 or so. They retired at 41 and now live in Europe with the grands. The stores run themselves - well, the big $$$ Operations Manager we hired runs them.

It's a good gig but you have to set them up right and the ever present issue is hiring good staff to keep it clicking. Staffing was always the biggest issue.

61 Regarding that dim bulb with the $80 ticket. I've had repair tickets. They are the easiest, cheapest tickets to deal with. I had one for a taillight out. You get a piece of paper ticket that is basically a warning. You go to some service station, and pay a couple bucks for a little light that they put in for you. Then all you have to do is either go to police station, or find a cop and they enter it into their computer that you fixed it. There's no fine, if you fix it.

I missed where the legislative, executive, and judicial powers were vested solely in the police. That being said...

You CAN make your case to the cop but you had better know what you are doing. I have, and got away with a warning, but ONLY because I knew what I was doing. (Example: a cop during a stop was reading me the Riot Act at one point for the address on the license. "Why does it have (town name) if you don't live in town?" Me: "You can go take THAT up with the Post Office!" Result? Warning. That cop was a POS. Shocker.)

99 61 Regarding that dim bulb with the $80 ticket. I've had repair tickets. They are the easiest, cheapest tickets to deal with. I had one for a taillight out. You get a piece of paper ticket that is basically a warning. You go to some service station, and pay a couple bucks for a little light that they put in for you. Then all you have to do is either go to police station, or find a cop and they enter it into their computer that you fixed it. There's no fine, if you fix it.

I told him "better you pull me over and let me know than I hit a cow on the way home because I can't see it". Result? Warning (DPS HAS to issue SOMETHING at EVERY stop no matter what).

Bulb replaced once I got to the garage.

Then if you're very confident in your knowledge of the law, and you want to make a point, you refuse, and PEACEFULLY accept it if the cop detains you. You'll have your day in court. I was told by one lying asshole to my face once that I drove 6 miles in a left hand turn only lane when I MAY have moved 50 feet.

This is where I began to re-evaluate my view to towards the cops to the point where I just look at them cynically now and have little sympathy towards them, and look at everything involving the cops case by case.

In most states, afaik, refusing to sign a citation is NOT an arrestable offense. Maybe that is why her felony charges of fleeing from the cop and kicking at him were knocked down to misdemeanors.

That’s just doing DUI checks without doing “official” DUI checks. They don’t even ask for license just speak to you for 30 seconds then tell you to have a good night.

No. Some are and some aren't. Depends on the infraction and can vary by state. Cops will however lie to you about your obligation to sign or threaten you with arrest if you don't, even if not signing the ticket is not a crime in your jurisdiction

I lived on a farm that had a tornado shelter. Requiring all homes built in an area to have one of those could be pretty onerous. Losing two kids to a tornado is a terrible thing, but the likelihood of it happening to your family has to be pretty small. I don't think it is enough to justify forcing every homeowner to pay for a tornado shelter. Making builders put them in, means that the homeowners will end up paying the cost. Having one should be voluntary. My dad had it built because there had been bad tornado, where a few people died, in that area. But it was his choice.

Rather than mandate that home builders provide a tornado shelter in every new home (which does jack shit for the existing housing stock, i.e. most homes in any area), pass a law that requires home insurers to give a discount to homeowners that install an approved tornado shelter. And then approve a number of designs, some of them very simple, such as a joint of 6-foot concrete culvert half-buried in the dirt.

I never have arged with the cops when it was a "clean kill". Last year, I gunned my enging anticipating a change in speed limits from 55 to 75 2000 feet ahead. Then I passed a black Ford Explorer, with a white hood...

FML. DPS. As soon as I saw him turn around I just pulled over and awaited the inevitable.

The DPS trooper to his immense credit knew what I was doing: "Look, I know the speed limit is 75 ahead but you HAVE to drive 55 on this side." The rest of the five minutes was just BSing on the side of the road. He probably saw the truck in town many times and knew I was a local. Warning. And he saw the TX LTC which helped.

Every local knows you WILL get stopped if over the limit. We have a very low crime rate as the meth heads and small time B&E guys can't drive up here and stay under the limit. The speed limits, in reality, are filters to determine who is a resident and who isn't.

Regardless of what the cops tell you, there IS a quota. Check your town's or county's budget. They budget for ticket money. Even in TX, where ticket quotas are allegedly illegal, tickets are in the budgets for various towns.

Look at Coffee City, TX and how ticket money corrupted their cops. And many of their cops, to include their chief, were absolute dirtbags.

That is a practice that is against the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" (we pretend that is still a thing, no?) and pretty much exposes the sham that is traffic tickets. Personally I like the idea the cops never impose them unless you get in an accident, in which case they start peeling off tickets.

Perhaps but being snotty to a cop doesn't give them the right or authority to do a goddamn thing. They don't have the lawful authority to beat up or taze or shoot or arrest a teenage kid (or anyone for that matter) just for being snotty or sarcastic. Doesn't mean that abusing their power in this fashion isn't routine, and remaining silent could save your life - but it shouldn't be tolerated or accepted.

Nah. Both of them were in the wrong. Teachers and cops seem to be the professions we love to generalize about. Most of the cops I know or have interacted with have been professional and courteous. There have been a couple of memorable assholes. Same with teachers. It's easy to get caught in that trap. Granny was a dumbass. Cop completely F'd up handling it.

That is a practice that is against the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" (we pretend that is still a thing, no?) and pretty much exposes the sham that is traffic tickets. Ha! Coffee City is just a little bit south of Tyler on 155. At one point they had 50 traffic officers for a town of 250 people. It was basically a shakedown operation to clean out anybody driving through there.

Thankfully, a couple of weeks ago (after an expose by a Houston paper) Coffee City fired its police chief and (at least temporarily) terminated its entire police dep't.

For me, the issue is that both cops and teachers are deemed to be completely above criticism, when no one will admit the truth: both have professionals, but are also chock full of bozos and incompetents. And both are made out to be superheroes who are in the game for totally altruistic reasons when I can argue both are out to make a buck. ESPECIALLY the police, who can work a plethora of side gigs just by having a badge.

I was pulling out onto a busy road, late in the afternoon, looked to the west and the sun low in the sky blinded me, I didn't see anything. Pulled out, making a left turn on the road - and ran right into a police car that I never saw. Damn.

not too bad, both vehicles are repairable, no injuries. We were only about 4 blocks from the police station, and it was a slow evening, so within about 5 minutes I was standing on the side of the road surrounded by 6 cop cars. Luckily, they all treated it like a big joke and laughed at the cop who got hit and all the paperwork he was gonna have to do since I dented his car. They gave me a "failure to yield right of way" ticket, and yeah, I really couldn't argue with that.

I cannot tell you how many times I have told my students last year (some with ankle monitors, no less) that they should think of being respectful to teachers as a dress rehearsal for life. At the most, if a kid cusses me in class, I send them to the AP, and, if he doesn't pat them on the head and give them a lollipop after saying "Don't do that again", the kid gets ISS. If they do that to a cop having a bad day, it will mean a BIT more.

Heah in MS, we had a number of speed trap towns. The legislature took care of that lil ole problem by banning radar use by towns with less than 10k population. As to county sheriff depts, NONE of them are permitted to run radar unless they are the sole source of policing for a town with 10k+ residents, that does happen but rarely).

Now if they would just outlaw warrantless forfeiture laws, we'd be sitting pretty good. Guilty until you prove you're innocent is a bad look wherever you are. Legalized theft, I call it.

Not me. I lived in Anchorage. Their cops are assholes, and I knew this living up there. When I get pulled over by a cop for 38 in a 35 and the cop is screaming at me for not having a registration tag on my plate when TX issues them for the WINDSHIELD, you are an asshole.

O'Keefe was quoted today saying that they fired him ostensibly for "financial irregularities" but when he left, 6 months ago, there was still $8 million in the company bank accounts. Now, just a few months later, all of that money is gone and nobody seems to be able to explain where it went. Oh but O'Keefe was the Bad Guy.

Off the top of my head I came up with 6 teachers that I could remember vividly. One was an asshole, the other five had a positive impact. School was easy for me when I wasn't being a trouble maker. My junior year of HS my semester gp were 0.8 and 4.0. In general, the rank and file I know as an adult, don't place themselves above criticism. The administrative elements of both professions is a different story. That is where the progtards have taken over. Don't get me wrong, many of those entering the profession have alterior motives. We just need to be careful regarding the size of paintbrush we use.

I bow to no man in my resistance to improper police attitudes and actions. But it was a trivial matter - that SHE blew up into something WAY MORE.

The only reason it escalating is because she thought she wasn't bound by the laws duly enacted by the legislature she helped elect. She didn't WANT to pay a fine for something SHE KNEW ABOUT FOR SIX MONTHS. So she got all bratty and threw a tantrum.

Sorry, this was HER fault, entirely. Someone wants to live outside the law? That's entirely on them.

Well, it is my idea. I'd say wall thickness at least 2 inches, better 3 or 4. Weight? a ton or more. No door means air pressure can adjust instantly, so sudden pressure drop cause by tornado cannot burst the structure. Spiral, so debris thrown by storm winds cannot impinge directly upon occupants.

That's what a ticket is, and you signing it is an acknowledgement that you will appear in court as required. If you refuse it, then the cop can force you to show up by taking you in right then. She refused to even allow the legal authorities to deal with the issue. She refused to appear in court. That means YOU GET PLACED UNDER ARREST.

She then physically fought him, AFTER fleeing the scene. I have NO truck with that, regardless of how old you are. If you act in such a way the officer cannot arrest you peaceably, then I want him to do what's necessary. You don't get to be an exception to the law because you don't wanna.

Another true Patriot identified.

I'm just gonna say go away to that one and call it a night. That's a stupid statement.

as of a couple weeks ago, the department was disbanded and everyone fired. (because of the piece you linked) This town was located on a heavily traveled north/south highway near Lake Palestine, and a strong rumour I heard is that traffic tickets weren't really what they were after, although they handed out a lot. They would look for anyone who looked "dirty" driving through town, or illegals, and then they wouldn't arrest them, they'd just jack them for all the cash and drugs they had on them and pocket it themselves.

Off the top of my head I came up with 6 teachers that I could remember vividly. One was an asshole, the other five had a positive impact. School was easy for me when I wasn't being a trouble maker. My junior year of HS my semester gp were 0.8 and 4.0. In general, the rank and file I know as an adult, don't place themselves above criticism. The administrative elements of both professions is a different story. That is where the progtards have taken over. Don't get me wrong, many of those entering the profession have alterior motives. We just need to be careful regarding the size of paintbrush we use.

I had a warning this week. Came to a four-way stop. Cop was on my left. Came to a complete stop, right turn signal on, made a right. Got lit up for stopping over the line. That, I think, was petty

Years ago a CHP tried to dog me on the 101 in SoCal. I was on my way to work with the cruise control set right at the 70mph speed limit, and he came zooming up at about 900mph, braked and went over into the right lane. Parked himself about a car length ahead, and started slowing down, so I slowed down and stayed in position. He got it down to about 50 with a bunch of folks behind us going "nope, I ain't passing him".

Then someone got antsy and passed at barely 60ish. Sure enough, the Chippie waited until the guy got a car length or two ahead and went all gumball with the lights.

Fucking asshole.

A cop in the town just up the road from one I used to live in told me once they didn't have a "quota". Instead, they had a "personal goal" that they were supposed to set themselves. Which just happened to conform to some metrics put out by the department.

Look at Coffee City, TX and how ticket money corrupted their cops. And many of their cops, to include their chief, were absolute dirtbags.

Everything was normal until a bruhaha between a teacher and a student. The student (parents) got a lawyer and filed suit on the teacher. - First time a judge allowed a frivolous lawsuit (frivolous suits were in vogue but this was the first here and an exemplar).
The lawyer bringing the suit and the judge allowing it was the first part.

The second part, the school system/board would not support the teacher's legal defense. There had never been such a suit and always, as the teacher was representative of the district, the expectation of support was a given.

Wrong, the teacher received no support, she had to pay for her own lawyer and the school board let the fox (union) in the hen house. Fear of lawsuits ran like a plague. In comes the rescue; Honey, join the union and we'll get you the best lawyer in town. Just as they are using lawfare against the nation the teachers union used lawfare against teachers. A succession of lawsuits and the teachers were on board never suspecting the corruption to come.

Fucker flew up out the ditch on my left, and crossed the road diagonally in front of me as I was accelerating from 40 mph to 60 mph after clearing the town of Linden. My cousin was a cop for a very long time. He's retired now. And he will tell you flat out that a lot of cops are assholes. At the end of his career, he couldn't wait to retire. He was really sick of it.
One of his sons is a cop now, too. Big guy, I wouldn't mess with him.

Fucker flew up out the ditch on my left, and crossed the road diagonally in front of me as I was accelerating from 40 mph to 60 mph after clearing the town of Linden. And it dipped down to fender height as it crossed my path. If I had been going 5 mph faster, I'd have had a goose dinner.

I used to follow a dissident CPD blog before coming here (they actually recommended the HQ when they were forced by events to close up shop). I get the distinct impression that police are a bit like Israel in that there's a siege mentality where anyone not 'of the tribe' is a potential bad guy and so they'd rather grudgingly circle the wagons than expose themselves to outside influence. Considering that city PDs are for the most part trapped between thugs and Marxists I can understand that motivation, but it occurs to me that it rarely ends well.

I have 4 kids. The oldest has worked his way through college with no student loans. The second oldest is moderately autistic but a great guy who is always ready to help. The younger two (17 and 12) are still works in progress with some emotional issues though the youngest is a legit genius level intellect.

I’m going to see if I can semi-retire in a couple years when my daughter graduates high school to spend time with my autistic son traveling the country periodically.
