It Came From the Nineties Cafe

cappadociatown.jpg
Cappadocia by @kyrenian

Controversial opinion: Pop music was better in the 90s than the 80s. And it was the last time pop music was good.

And there was actually rock on the pop charts. A lot of it.

These songs were actually all mostly hits, some of them big hits. Even though some are hard rock. Even Canadian kid-show pop queens were recording hard rock hits. That hasn't happened on the charts since... well, since the 90s.

You've got to trust your instincts/and let go of regrets/you've got to bet on yourself now, star/'cause that's your best bet

This one's hard because the lyrics either say the song's name or drop some blasphemy. So the best I can do is: Waaaah-waah-waah-waaaaah-wah-wah...!

I want you to know/I'm hap-py for you/I want nothing but/the best for your both (Spoiler: She doesn't mean it.)

More of a novelty, but memorable: This bed's on fire with passion and love/the neighbors complain of the noises above/but she only [sings] when she's on top That's the radio edit of the lyric.

I woke the same as any other day/Except a voice was in my head/It said seize the day, pull the trigger, drop the blade/And watch the rolling heads

And I don't like a thing about your mother/And I, I hate your daddy's guts too/And I don't like a thing about your sister, no, no/'Cause I, I, I think sex is overrated too

The comfort of a knowledge of a rise above the sky above could/
never parallel the challenge of an acquisition in the here and now.

screaming)I can't stand it, I know you planned it/I'ma set it straight, this Watergate/I can't stand rocking when I'm in here/'Cause your crystal ball ain't so crystal clear

Somebody once told me/the world is gonna roll me/I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed/She was looking kinda dumb/with her finger and her thumb/in the shape of an "L" on her forehead

"I had visions/I was in them/I was looking into the mirror/to see a little bit clearer/The rottenness and evil in me."

The next lyrics give it a way a bit:

Fingertips have memories

Mine can't forget the curves of your body

And when I feel a bit naughty

I run it up the flagpole and see

Who salutes, but no one ever does

Run and tell all of the angels, this could take all night/Think I need a devil to help me get things right/Hook me up a new revolution, 'cause this one is a lie/We sat around laughin' and watched the last one die

I was frying on the bench slide in the park across the street/L-A-T-E-R that week/My sticky paws were into making straws out of big fat slurpy treats/An incredible eight-foot heap

In the time of chimpanzees, I was a monkey/Butane in my veins, and I'm out to cut the junkie/With the plastic eyeballs, spray paint the vegetables/Dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose/Kill the headlights and put it in neutral/Stock car flaming with the loser in the cruise control A little later: Soyyyyy... un peredor...

I swear I never took it for granted, just thought of it now/Suppose I abused you, just passing it on/Go!/F*ck!

And I feel, so much depends on the weather/So is it raining in your bedroom?/And I see, that these are the eyes of disarray/Would you even care?

Hey, look around today/Everything don't need to be the same/Feel, I'm feelin, lonely people/People just like me who go it alone/I guess I'm gonna go it alone

Dead I am the pool, spreading from the fool/Weak and want you need, nowhere as you bleed/Dead I am the rat, feast upon the cat/Tender is the fur, dying as you burn. The updated video is much better than the original.

Cheese smells so good/On a burnt piece of lamb/Fag of the year/Who could beat up your man

Please tell me why/My car is in the front yard, and I'm/Sleeping with my clothes on/I came in through the window last night/And you're gone, gone

Hello, Speak up, Is there somebody there?/These hang-ups are getting me down/In a world frozen over with over-exposure/let's talk it over, let's go out and paint the town

Color me any color/Speak to me in tongues and share/Tell me how you'd love to hate me/Tell me how you'd love to care/[Bridge]Well I just want/To shake us up/Well I just want/I just want to/To shake us up

We love the all, the all of you/Where lands are green, and skies are blue/When all in all, we're just like you/We love the all of you

I got my head checked/By a jumbo jet/It wasn't easy/But nothing is, no/[Chorus](Woo-hoo) When I feel heavy metal/(Woo-hoo) And I'm pins and I'm needles/(Woo-hoo) Well, I lie and I'm easy/All of the time, but I'm never sure why I need you/Pleased to meet you

It's all about the he-says she-says bullshit/You better let shit slip, or you'll be leavin' with a fat lip By the way, gotta warn you, the girl who flips up her top is underage. I looked it up a long time ago. Not sure how that made the cut on MTV. Also please enjoy this mash-up/parody.

And that parody rolls right into this one: What's with these homies dissin' my girl?/Why do they gotta front?/What did we ever do to these guys/That made them so violent?
[Pre-Chorus] Woo-hoo, but you know I'm yours/Woo-hoo, and I know you're mine/Woo-hoo, and that's for all of time

A lot of videos in the 90s were on that retro tip: Sell the kids for food/Weather changes moods/Spring is here again/Reproductive glands

There's no going back to that/I'm so numb, can't even react/Didn't say it's not okay/But we aren't feeling the same way/I ain't telling you a secret/I ain't telling you goodbye

Mama tells me I shouldn't bother/That I ought just stick to another man/A man that surely deserves me/But I think you do/So I cry and I pray and I beg

Someone said Give peace a chance/(and that's all that we're saying)/While we're sitting on the fence/(Pretending)Our hearts are in the right place/But your faces shows a trace of
Hypocrisy/Don't tread on me/Now you can see

Wake up, kids, we got the dreamers' disease/Age fourteen, they got you down on your knees/So polite, we're busy still saying please/Frienemies, who, when you're down, ain't your friend/Every night we smash a Mercedes-Benz/First we run, and then we laugh till we cry

You think that we connect/That the chemistry's correct/Your words walk right through my ears/Presuming I like what I hear

Chickity China, the Chinese chicken/You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin'/Watching X-Files with no lights on/We're dans la maison/I hope the Smoking Man's in this one/Like Harrison Ford, I'm getting frantic/Like Sting, I'm tantric/Like Snickers, guaranteed to satisfy/Like Kurosawa, I make mad films, 'kay, I don't make films/But if I did they'd have a Samurai

This one might be a little obscure, but it's kinda great in a deeply stupid way: Now I know your heart, I know your mind/You don't even know you're being unkind/So much for all your highbrow Marxist ways/Just use me up and then you walk away/Boy, you can't play me that way

I'm the cream of the crop, I rise to the top/I never eat a pig 'cause a pig is a cop/Or better yet a Terminator, like Arnold Schwarzenegger/Tryin' to play me out like as if my name was Sega

Went down the highway/Broke the limit, we hit the town/Went through to Texas/Yeah, Texas, and we had some fun/

On to some more conventional cafe stuff:

So are the tigers included in the rent, or...?

Triple play: Switzerland, horse, pretty girl. Lot of leg in the second video.

More amazing vids of Switzerland.

Iceland accompanied by a guy doing The Crow cosplay.

More Iceland. Wow.

Arguing with a goat. In your heart, you know the goat is right.

A cat is caught cheating.

Introductions are in pawr-dor.

You spend $30 on cat toys. The cat ignores them and plays instead with the receipt, which is now destroyed so you can't return the toys.

Some amazing elephant videos, not all of them cute -- elephants can be scary, too.

In the third clip, a guy stands firm against a charging elephant, causing the elephant to stop his charge.

The fifth clip shows a mama elephant protecting her baby from a charging lion.

4 Though I would argue if you look hard enough, there's some good pop music after the 90s. But you gotta look hard for it.

Try The Hold Steady - they were 2000s and pretty good. But not chart toppers.

R A W S A L E R T S @rawsalerts 🚨#BREAKING: Sea lions have escaped the Central Park zoo due severe flooding
📌#Manhattan | #NewYork
Due to the extreme flooding that is occurring across New York City, the water level in the Sea Lion area rose significantly. As a result, the Sea Lions were able to swim over the glass enclosure and escaped their exhibit at the Central Park Zoo, according to zoo officials. The zoo staff also monitored the sea lion as she explored the area before returning to the familiar surroundings of the pool. Importantly, the sea lion never breached the zoo’s secondary perimeter. The Central Park zoo is closed due to the severe weather

20 Pop music was better in the 90s than the 80s. And it was the last time pop music was good.

I don't know about better, but the late 90s early 00s had a lot more VARIETY of music than was played on mainstream radio. Cherry Popping Daddies, Blues Traveler, Bjork, Dave Matthews, Beck, The Cardigans, etc. Some are more creative or unusual than others, but they are all outside the pop norm, and yet all made their way into mainstream radio being played next to standard pop.

The zenith of popular music was a 20 year period from 1975 to 1995.

Numerous and sundry musical genres, sub-genres and music scenes came to prominence and significance during this time.

It started to lose steam from 1995 to about 2004 and by 2010, Pop music had become generic, autotuned and quantized of all of it's life vigor and artistry.

The big red cat I lived with in the town house in '85-'86 loved to have me bat a crumpled piece of typing paper up to him, and he'd bat it back to me.

Oh, I know. No one really knows about Sister Soleil. It was mostly a joke for my amusement, and to see if there might be one other person here who might sound off and say "Hey! I saw Sister Soleil open for Big Britches at the ISU student union in 99"

Now I'm going to have to look that up. It's odd but I listen to music on my phone when I exercise. Mostly country music but blues, reggae, pretty eclectic taste. I'll be doing something and a song will pop into my head or I'll wake up in the morning and a song will be playing over and over, sometimes just one verse.
I like to think my life has a soundtrack but it can be annoying at times. Soon as I logged on and saw the red print, all I keep hearing was Taylor Swift singing the chorus to Red.

80 About the only pop song I remember from the '90s was "Get Over It" by the Eagles, from their Hell Freezes Over album. My vision is that the best rock/pop music ran from about 1960 to 1985, and some of the best country went on to about 1995. That's pretty much it.

161 Now I'm going to have to look that up. It's odd but I listen to music on my phone when I exercise. Mostly country music but blues, reggae, pretty eclectic taste.

Let me make three recommendations to expand your mind.
William Shatner's spoken word album The Transformed Man. Sings Strawberry Fields and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
https://tinyurl.com/45jembyn

Wesley Willis, Fabian Road Warrior. Mentally ill homeless Chicago man with a Casio keyboard. Each song is the same keyboard demo song, just with a different tempo and key. It's great when you have the CD and can just skip from track to track and hear the demo song start up every time lol

He was forthcoming, saying they would never be without an ICE car or truck but the Bolt was OK for around town. Range dropped a lot running air (a must around here) and he hadn't needed heat or defrost yet. He said a round trip to Fayetteville would make him nervous.

If driving solo I'd bring the AR, both revolvers, the 1911, maybe the S&W model 52, the shotty, and at least one rifle I do not currently know how to shoot. However, if riding with SD and Ed, if I don't want to end up strapped to the roof with bungee cords, I might have to scale back.

Same. The Seventies, despite both parties wrecking the economy, and fashionistas giving us polyester, wide ties, and bowl haircuts, did give us music from back when people could play their instruments and guitarists could play solos.

Speaking of which (well, I'm strictly rhythm), a few weeks ago I bought a Boss SY-300 guitar synth and am just now learning how to program it. That's a bey0tch, but the sounds and stuff are fantastic.

An Average EV has a sub 250 mile range under optimal conditions, so you would have to stop to charge, minimally, 3 times, using a level 1 charger it would take a 12 hours to recharge your vehicle or overnight, using a level 2 charger it would take 6 hours, using a level 3 charger it would take about 2 hours to recharge, so...

Nope. Not me. Late 70s, everything was so overplayed that I got sick of it all. I loved the 80s, found lots to love in the 90s and 00s, and even now I find good music with enhanced playlists on Spotify.

There are always good musicians. It's the radio environment that's changed--we stream music, and don't have common musical experiences like we used to.

Had to make a 20 hour, 2 day trip to visit family & that was the only CD we had in the car for the kids. That was waaay too much Wiggles. Nonetheless, we went to a couple of their shows and they were surprisingly enjoyable. It was the original iteration of the group, not whatever they have now with the chicks and non-binary dinosaur.

254 165 I'm not shy about asking questions about somebody's car. Pulled in behind a Chevy Bolt and complimented the guy on a good looking car (it was) and asked a few questions. He was forthcoming, saying they would never be without an ICE car or truck but the Bolt was OK for around town. Range dropped a lot running air (a must around here) and he hadn't needed heat or defrost yet. He said a round trip to Fayetteville would make him nervous.
Posted by: bill in arkansas

In the exact same position. My Prius died, and we got a Bolt. Wife drives it around for all the random kiddie stuff (school, activities, groceries, etc), but we have an ICE car for trips and such. AC doesn't seem to be a major energy drain...the car actually does a good job tracking energy use by system, and it seems pretty minor. The few times we have to charge it away from home, it's still about 20% cheaper (dollar per mile) than my Prius was, and it's incredibly cheap charging at home.

Bombastic and distinctly Icelandic, I'm pretty sure they're the biggest thing over there. And their music seems to go quite well with the landscape.

Some musical genres are part of a larger cultural shift, and punk definitely was. So it's possible to not "get" the music, if one was not there at the time (I sure wasn't). In which case, the music has to stand or fall on its merits, and yeah, like any other musical style, there's great punk, and there's crap. Sometimes from the same artists, mere months apart.

315 A lot of musical appeal is the connection to time and place. Who you were with and what you were doing when you first listened to stuff. Head on the Door takes me back to my ages 15-18, which were fantastic times.

I was in Germany when I first found The Cure. Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, I had it on tape, and remember being stuck in a tent, listening to it over and over between guard duty shifts. I can still smell the canvas, feel the heat blasting down the center of the cots, even see the dim lights of the tent, with mud up to your knees if you weren't careful where you stepped outside the tent.

>>Why is that sad? Wouldn't that split the Dem vote and ensure Biden's demise?

Listen, Trump got 74 million votes in 2020, there were more than likely a crap ton of old school Donks that voted for him.

Biden's "support" is from true-believers, they are not going to peel off from the Borg collective and vote for RFK, and that makes up the bulk of Donk voters.

This isn't 92 and RFK is not Ross Perot.

RFK will take more votes from Trump than Biden.

321 Abortion is no longer a Fedeal issue, so it is ramped up to 11 for the pro-abortion Dems. Planned Parenthood has been so successful BECAUSE they never concede an inch of ground, and now that there are "backwards Red states denying women essential Healthcare and basic human rights", they will hammer it home, nonstop, in every election across this nation. They think it's an absolute winner, and with recent election trends...I'm not sure they're wrong.

If it's such a winning issue for Democrats, then why would a Republican try to run on outlawing it nationally?

If you counted Biden's "true believers," you'd be hard pressed to find 20 million votes for the guy. And even if you added in Democrat "true believers" who'll vote for him because of party loyalty, you'll get maybe 40 million.

The rest are manufactured.

No, these times are very different. RFK was already polling at 15% in the Dem primary, essentially what Ron is polling. So he's either significant or Ron isn't.

The Democrat Party isn't a complete Borg. There are moderates like Manchin everywhere. They are just outgunned and out moneyed right now by marxists.

And Biden is bleeding support. Lots of Democrats buy food and gas and don't want don't be invaded by illegals. Look at NYC for proof. No real Trump voter is flipping to RFK.

I think there are many libs now looking for an alternative to an utterly corrupt and manifestly incompetent Biden. I think you overestimate their loyalty. A vote for RFK is a protest vote, and one that will give them a little frisson of naughtiness.

RFK will take more votes from Trump than Biden.

Just saying it doesn't make it so. In any case, the original comment stipulated a Dem voter, so within the confines of the situation as stated, Trump voters are irrelevant.

I wasn't sure, so I went to his campaign website. In the "about DeSantis" section, it says he signed legislation "Protecting the unborn", but I don't see anything about supporting a nationwide abortion ban.

The courts give Trump the back of their hands when it comes to voter fraud, but I very much doubt they'd be willing to do that to a Kennedy. Thus, Biden loses those votes, and the Dems are defeated.

Later 90s alt rock was better, but still no comparison. 80s metal ruled.
