Is This Something?

There's a Frasier reboot.

New documentary on Netflix about alleged UFO encounters.

Zach Snyder pitched a Star Wars sequel to Kaffeine Kennedy, who turned him down. But he made the movie anyway, stripping out the legally-protected parts of the Star Wars IP. Is it a Star Wars killer? A: No, of course not. Star Wars is already dead and cannot be re-killed, though Kaffeine Kennedy does keep trying.

The third (and almost certainly last) of Branagh's Poirot films just opened this past Friday. I had wanted to go see it, but didn't. The movie didn't make much money, just $14.5 million, but it's being reviewed pretty well -- 76% positive critic ratings and 79% positive audience reactions on Rotten Tomatoes. I assume people aren't bothering to see it because the previous two Poirot films were, as the Belgians say, la poopie. At least this one there are no superior theatrical films to unfavorably compare it to.

BTW, Tina Fey plays the Agatha Christie self-insert character Adriane Oliver, who is the world's most popular mystery writer. The character isn't a Mary Sue, though. She's like John Watson -- she's capable but she's not threatening to steal the spotlight from the actual hero.

Update: A commenter points out that this is a Disney movie, acquired through 20th Century Studios.

I did see the Jennifer Lawrence movie No Hard Feelings. It was hilarious and even a good, affecting movie. It's definitely a raucous movie that earns its R-rating. Jennifer Lawrence's seduction attempts -- which are one step more sophisticated than just roofying the kid --are funny and cringeworthy, particularly as we see that she's not arousing anything in the kid except anxiety and outright fear.

The movie may appeal to people sick of woke hypersensitivity, because Jennifer Lawerence's character keeps cracking the very thin eggshells of the 19-year-old Zoomer she's trying to seduce, as well as his fellow Zoomers.

Definitely worth your time, if you're in the mood for a sex comedy.

Really funny. I was genuinely surprised at how funny it was and how much I liked it. It was directed by Gene Stupinsky, who is one of the best directors of The Office (he did "Scott's Tots" and some other classic episodes), and who also just created Jury Duty, which I know some of you saw.

Sony released the first nine minutes of the movie as a promotion so you can watch and decide it it's up your alley.

I've linked an earlier trailer for The Creator:

Update: Commenters are telling me this is a Disney movie, so 1, I do not trust the hype from shill critics, who Disney is known to wine-and-dine for positive reviews, and 2, even if it is a good movie, I'll be skipping it.

Disney probably didn't originate it; they probably acquired it when they acquired Fox. Oh well, it's still a Disney project, and therefore to be boycotted.

I trust IMDB scores after a film's initial release. Not that they'll reflect my taste, but that they'll reflect the generalized taste of those people who have seen it, largely free from studio bias and things like bot shenanigans.

RT is honestly just too poorly designed a website to look at anymore.

36 The third (and almost certainly last) of Branagh's Poirot films just opened this past Friday. I had wanted to go see it, but didn't.

Here you go, Ace:

Saw "A Haunting in Venice",

which is the third of Kenneth Branagh's Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot mystery movies.

Surprisingly, it's the best one so far. The dark, claustrophobic setting in a small Venice palazzo along with a reduced cast really helps this one to work.

There's no huge anachronistic foofaraw to try and accommodate woke tastes except maybe having Michelle Yeoh in the cast.

Great acting and superior directing all around. Good script. But, you know the dealio-murder happens Hercule Poirot figures it out.

This one has a lot of twists and turns. And you may figure out the murderer. I did very late in the story but you won't be able to figure out why till the explanation comes, and even then there's a nice surprise to come, which you probably suspect but won't exactly know what it is.

Good olde-fashioned time at the movies.

Check it out.

I'm enjoying it a lot so far. It's definitely goofy, but I can't overestimate how much of a breath of fresh air it is to see a male protagonist in a show to just be unambiguously good like Luffy is. Not necessarily powerful, but morally good. He's kind, forgiving, happy, and willing to see the best in people. "The Creator" from the latest trailer I saw at the theater looks like-

it's gonna an AVATARized Terminator movie.

Robots good, humans bad. Except for the humans who help kill off the rest of the humans.(See Avatar and Planet of the Apes movies).

Evil humans try to kill "the future" by destroying a cute kid like robot.

Meh humanity hating story probably + fabulous SFX = hit?!?!

81 I just read the wiki synopsis of No Hard Feelings.

...

It seems like a weird, somewhat sanitized version of the old teenage love comedies. Something like 'Can't Buy Me Love' but... odder. I kinda get the idea that the writers these days have no idea how to craft a satisfying story. You have to make it possible for the characters to at least get together. The unlikely pairing is supposed to be difficult, not impossible. The age difference here makes if they did, a bit creepy.

Apparently the difference is that the creator of the manga, Oda, retained significant creative control to the live adaptation of One Piece and insisted on changing certain things so that it met his vision. Also apparently from interviews, the people involved in the show genuinely like the source material. Which is where a lot of these adaptations fall on their face.

147 I've rewatched Frasier a few times. I think my favorite character was Niles, the way he goes completely rigid when he's shocked or outraged. I do think the show went off the rails when he finally won Daphne. It was a continuous plot point ver the years, and they killed it.
Anyway, I can't muster much enthusiasm for a reboot.

152 I will watch anything a24 puts out, but I'm really looking forward to Poor Things and the general audience reaction. Yorgos Lanthamos' most recent film, The Favorite, was designed for a more mainstream audience, but his normal work has some pretty fucked up themes. Poor Things seems, from the trailer, to be more challenging than The Favorite, and I bet it will come as a surprise to the "I'm gonna go see the movie getting all the buzz" crowd.

The Critical Drinker crowd loves it. I think they panned the Zach Snyder Not-Star Wars thing. Them or somebody else.

As for Jen Lawrence, I continue to tout "Don't Look Up." It's very good, not necessarily due to her, but she's playing against type, I think, and does fine at it.

For those who know, it's an Adam McKay thing, and he's got a track record. A little over-fond of Will Farrell for my tastes, but this has an "all-star" cast. It's political without being partisan, and definitely capable of hitting a LOT of current things with humor and witty satire.

Two big toes up.

My neurodivergent reading of "The Little Mermaid": Ariel is autistic, and Eric has ADHD. From dinglehoppers to updated "Kiss the Girl" lyrics, 2023's "Little Mermaid" resonates with my neurodivergent self.

...watched the original animated version and despite enjoying it, had hammered into my brain that it was not feminist. Looking back, as an undiagnosed auDHDer (someone who is autistic and has ADHD)...noticed the smallest of details point towards Ariel being autistic, such as her toe-walking and her discomfort in human clothes, a struggle that resonates with autistic people...Ariel's refusal to wear a corset despite it being a social faux pas to be seen without one at the time is very similar to autistic women and AFAB's discomfort with wearing bras.

The presence of neurodivergence in the live-action film got me to do something the original animated film never could: ship Ariel and Eric...the updated lyrics to "Kiss the Girl," asking for explicit consent resonates, as many neurodivergent people are unable to pick up on non-verbal cues and end up getting taken advantage of.

Think I watched the short first season and two others which took them to the end of high school and it was overall a good show, well written zigging between normal life at the Hellmouth and magic/horror. Didn't follow it any farther.

One of my faves is a show where the mean kids and the male guy in the inner circle Zander get posessed by the spirit of a pack of Hyenas on a zoo field trip. The mean kids get sent to the principal's office for a talking to, and they eat him.

There was a recent episode of Bluey that was interesting. One of the school kids seems to be going through a bit of depression, which was tied to a memory of him getting lost as a kid.

I did a little search on it to grasp it a bit more if my kids had questions and wow. So many people talking about how he's on the spectrum and there are obvious signs, yada, yada.

Midnight Express was the weirdest one, I think. A kind of weepy about a kid who goes to Turkey, knowingly breaks their drug laws, and then gets imprisoned for years. There is no "presence of neurodivergence" in the movie. *You* projected it onto the movie. You even acknowledge this - it's what you read into it. It wasn't there. The writer and director didn't put it there, *you* put it there.

"Two Ukrainian pilots are in the U.S. undergoing an assessment to determine how long it could take to train them to fly attack aircraft, including F-16 fighter jets, according to two congressional officials and a senior U.S. official.

The Ukrainians’ skills are being evaluated on simulators at a U.S. military base in Tucson, Arizona, the officials said, and they may soon be joined by more of their fellow pilots.

U.S. authorities have approved bringing up to 10 more Ukrainian pilots to the U.S. for further assessment as early as this month, the officials said."

419 404 Midnight Express was the weirdest one, I think. A kind of weepy about a kid who goes to Turkey, knowingly breaks their drug laws, and then gets imprisoned for years. Yeah, the punishment was greater than the crime, probably, but, you know what? Going into another person's country and knowingly breaking their laws doesn't make you terribly sympathetic.

Branagh was only in the second. Thompson didn't show up until the 3rd. Carter didn't show up until the 5th.

I think the only one that the two women might have shared screentime in was the 8th, but Thompson only filmed for a day, and I think it was all post-battle stuff after Carter's character died.

So...no. They didn't share screentime.

I saw Midnight Express like a lot of movies - way too young (my parents didn’t start clutching pearls unless there was a hint of the horizontal Hokey Pokey). I remember thinking “wow, they are being really cruel to that guy.” Today if I saw it I’d just say “you know, this doesn’t happen to me because I don’t smuggle drugs. Read your passport. Dumbass.”
