  • Speaking of sense in unexpected places, the CDC doesn't have any:
Updated COVID-19 vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older and will be available by the end of this week at most places you would normally go to get your vaccines.
    But Australia:
For younger people or older adults without severe immunocompromise who have already had a dose in 2023, no further doses are currently recommended. Their baseline risk of severe illness is low if they have already been vaccinated, and particularly if they have also had prior infection. Therefore a further 2023 dose will offer little additional benefit even if it has been more than 6 months since their last dose.
Australia's Department of Health doesn't recommend an additional booster for adults under 65 unless they are severely immunocompromised, or for children under any circumstances.

You have to wonder how two health organisations can look at the same set of data and come to two so widely diverging opinions.

  • Tonga is filling up with scrap. (ABC)

With a booming economy comes garbage, and with a small island comes nowhere to put that garbage.

You might be thinking, wait, doesn't Tonga have an active volcano? Build a trebuchet and problem solved.

Well, yes, it does, but (a) it just exploded and (b) the caldera is about 500 feet under water. Perhaps not insurmountable issues but that does make it harder to recoup costs by making it a tourist attraction.

  • HyperDX is an open source alternative to DataDog, which is to say, a flexible monitoring platform for complex server environments. (GitHub)

I discussed DataDog briefly a while back after finding that the monitoring client was a 250MB download - 750MB installed - that included an entire Python runtime and who knows what else.

After seeing that monstrosity I took at the matching client for StatusCake, which while somewhat less comprehensive was a single shell script that I could and did audit in under half an hour.

The entire HyperDX codebase is a 5.6MB download.

  • AMD has announced its Epyc 8004 Zen 4c low-end server CPUs, codenamed Siena. (AnandTech)

"Low end" now goes up to 64 cores, it seems.

These start at around $400 for an 8 core chip, which isn't bad considering they have six memory channels and 96 lanes of PCIe 5.

But they also run at around half the clock speed of Ryzen desktop chips, so just to match a 16 core 7950X (around $600) you'd need a 32 core Epyc ($1900) and things don't get interesting until you get to the 48 core model ($2700).

We'll have to wait and see what the pricing is like on Zen 4 Threadripper workstation parts, but since clock speeds will be higher I wouldn't expect prices to be lower.

  • Elon Musk has again floated the idea of charging a small fee for all Twitter users. (Tech Crunch)

He's focused on bots again, reasonably enough; they're a plague. And charging any sort of monthly fee would eradicate them.

Presumably these bots aren't using the official APIs and work by faking a web user, because the official APIs have already moved to paid plans (and absurdly expensive ones at that).

The problem is, charging a monthly fee would eradicate the bots, but it would eradicate Twitter too.

Re Mannix, Season 1 from last thread. That didn't do too well in the ratings. Lucy, Lucille Ball, at Desilu retooled it. She got rid of Intertek and the computers and made Mannix the Mannix we all know and love.

You can also thank Lucy for Star Trek. She was the one who convinced NBC to give it a second chance.

Lucy was no dummy. She knew good TV.

When porn goes full AI, none of that will matter. And a certain VA rep will be out of one job, hopefully two.

9 Not a bad idea to clean up the plant, toss everything unwanted in to a volcano. Plastics, old tires, liberals, all the trash just straight down in to sweet hot magma.

I didn't read the Twitter article, but I would think charging to tweet over X (no pun intended) amount of times could do the trick, since bots and generally annoying people are putting out hundreds of tweets a day, if not per hour.

Most people with any sort of reach already pay for their checkmark, or get it through their affiliate, and average users most likely aren't tweeting much or are tweeting at people, which could also be exempt from the count.

No way im paying to just read some tweets and respond to maybe 1 or 2 people a day.

I was reading cooking directions for high altitude a couple of days ago that had to be written by AI. While free of typos it made little logical sense and just seemed to be a stream of consciousness rant. It inferred that heat is hotter at higher altitudes without any logical explanation.

I assume that the internet will eventually be about 50% AI crap that will make us all a little dumber. But the clicks, oh the clicks. All the storage required to maintain all this crap will make someone wealthier.

48 >> It inferred that heat is hotter at higher altitudes without any logical explanation.

At higher altitudes, the boiling point of water decreases. So, way up high, temperature is less for boiling a pot of something. This makes a difference. For canning and pressure cooking, this is important.

Now, going the other way, I remember reading some stuff about higher pressure environments, like deep sea divers, and their habitats at much higher than normal atmosphere, and cooking therein.

Very diifferent and very strange, cooking at say 2 atm of pressure vs normal 1 atm.

121 A St. Louis restaurant has sparked a massive backlash after enacting a lengthy list of new rules including 'no hoodies', 'saggy pants' and 'sleeveless tank tops on men' - despite its own staff being scantily-clad in tiny uniforms. The restaurant, Social Bar and Grill Soulard located in downtown St. Louis, Missouri posted their new policy outside the bar's front window and on an easel at the host stand earlier this month. According to the new dress code, masks, hoodies, saggy pants, backpacks, men's sleeveless tank tops, and overly revealing outfits are now forbidden in the establishment.

Got interested in this, high pressure for humans. Smoking this over, about 30 - 33 atm absolute pressure seems to be the limit for human tolerance. Of course, to breathe at that pressure, you need all sorts of exotic gas mixtures and all that. But that's about the limit.

Even helium, at these pressures, become problematic. "Helium tremors", it's a thing at extreme pressure. The human body, it's designed for 1 atm, 20% oxygen, 1g. It's amazing, the tolerances beyond that, with some fancy figurin' and cipherin' and all that. But there are Limits.

Now "liquid breathing". Many sci-fi movies and such have had that. Maybe, but it's problematic.

Yeah, folks will get furious with you at pointing out that obvious parallel. There was even a Pulitzer Prize winning book back written by a flaming homosexual in the early 2000s or so called "Far From the Tree" where he was trying his hardest to convince people that gays are awesome the same way disabled people are awesome. Or something. Lots of medical info and attempts to support his "gays are awesome but at the same time put upon" position.

He addressed that clear parallel in his Pulitzer Prize winning book, though. He had a paragraph where he said "Shut up, anorexia is different. It's a mental disorder. Shut up, that's why."
