46 From the side-bar:

A city-owned grocery store in the South or West side of Chicago would be a viable way to restore access to healthy food in areas that have suffered from historic and systemic disinvestment.

Shoplifters won't steal from the municipal grocery store?

What does that promotion path look like for a city-owned grocery store?

How exactly is food supposed to show up on the store shelves? Magic? For all of these decades Kroger, Safeway, Walmart et al never needed distribution centers, marketers, merchandisers, distribution chains, reliable suppliers, and the vast infrastructure, site selection, and sales and customer preference data for forecasting, processes, efficiencies of scale and thousands of years of accumulated industry knowledge?

These retards can't even run a lemonaid stand, they really are going to beat Big Grocery at one of the most cut-throat games?

You can train cats, they have these cat circuses that are pretty cool. Mostly they train themselves to do tricks.

The major difference is that when a cat is tired of the tricks he's done. The need to please a human is not built into the cat like it is to the dog. They can be kind, or devoted but it isn't forced on them by their genetics.

They can easily beat groceries...by banning them.

Of course if they did the jobs they are legally forcing people to NOT do for themselves, like self defense, and enforced the laws they took oaths to follow, then there would be no issue with stores closing in those areas and it would all come with no effort on their part.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m sure the White House is very gratified for some of the things that he’s saying,” Axelrod said. “I don’t know that they’d be as enthusiastic about his ubiquitous presence on the air. It’s sort of like, just at the time when Democrats are concerned about their aging, you know, spouse, here comes this neighbor. Young, strapping potential partner.”
“Right!” Tapper exclaimed. “Did you see the split screen? I mean, I don’t know if we were doing that on purpose, but it looked like -”
“Yeah,” Axelrod agreed. “I mean, I know that he knows - he’s a sophisticated guy.

Those aren't actually very large. The scale is logarithmic so those lower numbers aren't that special. The one from 02/23 I'm working on was actually two quakes that went 7.9-ish, both, and at certain intersectional geological points topped 9.5. Anatolia and area has 3 major faults and they all did their thing. A 4.9 is like a semi-truck driving by on your residential street. It'll vibrate the house and make the windows rattle but it's nothing really dangerous.

70 “Historic disinvestment has led to inequitable access to food retail across Chicago, and these existing inequities have been exacerbated.”

I love it, Public Grocery Store. Same high quality that you find in Public Schools, Public Restrooms, Public Transportations, etc.

And in Illinois. A union state. Staffed by undoubtably affirmative action hires and mobbed up connected sinecures.

A grocery store, deliberately sited at the most crime ridden, low-trust, uncivilized demographics in the whole state. A store where they state up front that they don't care how much product is stolen.

It will be emptied faster than a free Narcan vending machine.

That's a good point about the logarithmic scale. An ignorant person might say that a 4.0 is half as powerful as an 8.0, when in reality it's about 10,000 times weaker.

96 Fun fact: the only structures proven to withstand serious earthquakes are keyed, gigantic stone blocks (think Machu Picchu). However, those blocks were keyed in place by sifting an abrasive sand/compound into the joints. Hence, when a quake hit, the stones would vibrate and shift, having the result of not shaking them apart but rather making them grind against each other and tighten the joints!

So the more intense the quake, the tighter the joints would get as they would abrade further into place.

I only heard about the hurricane with a days notice since I don't consume regular news. A quick news check on YT showed a decent weatherman in SD giving sensible projections on their area and saying that most of the business would be inland and divided from my area by several hill ranges. Turned out he was right on the money. Later I saw some LA channels trying to boost the situation in Long Beach up to even be a little worrisome. Nobody seemed to be buying it, as the sandbag people only had a few customers.

In my particular area it rained more as it approached than it did when it was passing to the east heading north.

if the soil has a certain composition it can liquefy into a instant quicksand and swallow you. I don't doubt that not enough improving of codes or following them was done, its a huge expense on a not wealthy land.

From what I understand the big fault there popps off regularly at different places from the Istanbul area off to the east of it into Iran. The quakes move progressively along the fault popping off large quakes. Its Arabia getting pushed by Africa north up into the bottom of Asia.

The stuff actually starts a chemical reaction with the rock due to pressure that kinda melts the two stones together making them very tough. The non linear joins also help make them hold together better than a long parallel one.

Taxpayer subsidies all the way down.

Government invents nothing. Government will outsource everything to Walmart/Costco/Kroger. There will be no discounting to compete with traditional retail chains. The Big Retailers will just ship material to "government" stores who will then, at a loss, sell items in food deserts. That loss will be absorbed by taxpayers who aren't subsidized in these food desert districts.

Big Retail gets its normal money, a guaranteed contract, and avoids the costs of shrinkage in retail-hostile zones.

Government doesn't beat anything; it coopts it to willing participants.

168 143 Taxpayer subsidies all the way down.

Yeah, the measuring scales remind me of internal ballistics of firearms (my specialty, originally); there is initial shock, duration, etc. and they all try to measure energy dump: how much, where, how long did it last, how much energy was dumped and in what way? The various scales vary. But this one in Turkey was much more serious than initially reported and well, I'm trying to bridge a variety of wants about it.

196 From Web:

Sorghum is of a lower feed quality than corn (maize). It is high in carbohydrates, with 10 percent protein and 3.4 percent fat, and contains calcium and small amounts of iron, vitamin B1, and niacin. For human consumption, the gluten-free grain is usually ground into a meal that is made into porridge, flatbreads, and cakes. The characteristic strong flavour can be reduced by processing. The grain is also used in making edible oil, starch, dextrose (a sugar), paste, and alcoholic beverages. The stalks are used as fodder and building materials. Sweet sorghums, or sorgos, are grown mainly in the United States and southern Africa for forage and for syrup manufacture and are sometimes used in the production of ethyl alcohol for biofuel.

All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock.”

221 Once I was in AZ and a dust storm came up. A haboob. I pulled into a parking lot and turned off the engine. No sense in trying to drive thru it. After it passed I opened up the hood and checked the air filter. Had to shake it out, full of sand. Put it back in, closed the hood and proceeded on my way.

Back in the 1980s I discouraged my first cat from waking me up by holding her close and talking in a high pitched squeaky voice in her ear for a few minutes. It was so horrible that she trained the next cat to not bother me, and they trained subsequent generations for four or five complete turnovers. No effort on my part at all, its now a house rule and tradition for all the cats.
