Heh. When I was around age 5, my father would bring me with him to a downtown recreation center where he played handball.

While I was wandering around outside (kids used to do that in those days), a couple of black "yutes" grabbed me and asked me to give them all my money. I, of course, didn't have any -- but one of them grabbed me by the ankles like that and starting shaking me to see if any coins would fall out of my pockets.

They both got a good laugh out of it while I was terrified and humiliated. Have always had a fear of -- and fought back against -- bullies ever since then.

Contrary to popular belief, the “retired” NIAID chief reportedly remains on staff via a no show job at the NIAID, so that he can receive his U.S. Marshals security detail.

Okay, O/T but I found it fascinating. I was wondering if "mass" as in "quantity of matter" or "amount of something" shared a root with "mass" as in "Catholic religious service." I looked it up in my OED and found that the definition was a total of almost 5 full pages (which is a gigantic entry). What I learned I found very interesting.

They do *not* share a common root. "Mass" in the religious sense originally specifically referred to the Eucharist itself, and most likely comes from the Latin missa, which means "dismissal." It refers (probably) to the dismissal of those not entitled to the Eucharist, or the dismissal at the end of the service, or the theological "dismissal" of those things that stand between G-d and man (there is much argument on the topic).
(con't)

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 29, 2023 10:01 AM (t0OGg)

143 (con't)
"Mass" in the matter sense is derived from the Greek maza via the Latin masse, which referred to a lump of dough. It came to mean "a bunch of something" - a mass of something. The word's evolution continued into the contemporary scientific meaning of "the amount of matter of which a thing is comprised" only in the, IIRC, 18th century.

"Quantity of matter" is a very new meaning, because there was no need for the distinction between "mass" and "weight" prior to discovery and understanding of gravity. The common scientific usage of the word is a relative latecomer, and it is derived from the non-religious prior sense and has an entirely different root.

The words are perfect homonyms - they are both homographs (spelled the same) and homophones (sound the same) but are entirely different words with different roots and even different mother tongues.

Maybe they can compromise, and appoint Kamala's step daughter. She looks biracial and trans, and supports all the "right" causes:

She is a supporter of LGBT rights, particularly as an advocate for the rights of transgender people. In 2020, she announced she would support the organization For the Gworls, a black, transgender-led collective that fundraises money to help black transgender people pay for rent, gender affirming surgery, travel, and medical care.

Decades ago now, my parents bought a nice house from a guy who was born in Belgium. In his little backyard garden was a replica of Manneken Pis. When they sold the place years later we hung onto "Pee-Boy" because it had been a good joke between my dad and my son when he was little.

I transferred it to my sister. He'd gotten a little rough, and his fountain-spout weewee had begun to erode. Sister rebuilt that orifice(!), piped it up to spew properly (she was a pipefitter), and -- recoated the whole damn thing in Italian Restaurant gold. Nice work, too. It is Hideous, and the talk of her neighborhood. Seems like very few people get the Brussels connection.

258 US Senator Diane Feinstein died.

The dedicated Gun Grabber can go to her grave knowing that she made that "Evil" AR-15 rifle the most popular firearm in the United States of America. Thanks to that ill thought out Clinton Era "assault weapons ban," Americans in unison raised their middle fingers to Washington DC, and preceded to buy, make, and import millions of semiautomatic rifles.

Building and modifying and rebuilding your own AR patterned rifle became a rite of passage for freedom loving Americans. We took a standard.223 caliber rifle, and invented a bunch of new rifle rounds like .300 Blackout, .338 Lapua, and a dozen more for it. We made short barrel rifles, pistols, and even T-shirt launchers out of them.

The AR-15 went from a niche product of Colt Firearms to being a popular, well selling product built by almost every US Firearms manufacturer, with dozens of start up companies building their own versions, and hundreds of companies getting into the business of manufacturing parts for AR rifles.

Thank you Diane Feinstein. Without your ham-fisted "Assault Weapons Ban," millions of Americans would never have became firearms enthusiasts.

A Democrat who is a centrist who reaches across the aisle has been, for several decades, a far left ideologue that Republican leadership palls around with while getting all of their preferred pork into major legislation and their name on leftist legislation that ends up getting Republican leadership approval because that's how the Senate is supposed to work.

A Democrat who is a centrist who reaches across the aisle never votes for conservative legislation in any way shape or form.

In fairness to the girl, "centrist" to a Democrat means someone willing to work, when absolutely necessary, with one of those "Republicans" not only willing, but eager, to stab their voters in the back. It's not like it was a huge burden.

My mother was involved in a "tragic" firearms incident as a girl, and came away damaged. I have a certain sympathy. By terminating the signal with the wrong resistance, the signals would attenuate wrong, reflections would increase and and data transmission would become unreliable, particularly as cable length and number of devices increased. Collisions would increase. The devices closest to the start of the cable might not notice the problem very much, but the devices closer to the end (closer to the terminator) would probably not work at all.

Improper termination. Not even once.

Based on the History Channel documentary they had her doing color commentary on (when she was being groomed for higher office and hadn't bitten the Hellary campaign hand that fed her) she is either a "mid-wit" at best or else the script writers hated her. I respect that she was willing to go against Hillary and keep biting even after losing everything, but that's all I respect.

455 At least one prominent politician in CA. used his anti 2nd Amendment stance as cover for his own gun smuggling schemes. We had a state senator, an Asian guy named Lee, who very vocal about guns, didn't want anyone to own any. Turns out he was smuggling them into the port of Oakland by the shipping container full. He went to prison for it.

456 362 Lieberman was a centrist like Ed Koch was a centrist. Always saying middle of the road things while voting left every time. And willing to reach across the aisle to get squishy Republicans to vote left as well.

Nah, it's just us gray-haired geeks playing "Hey kid..." again. We'll still be doing it in the lunchroom at the geek retirement home.

459 I'm still trying to figure out the magic trick of having Texas Governor Abbott sending 2,000 illegal immigrants to NYC and 100,000+ arriving there.

They're probably using the Abbott thing as a screen to admit to all those plane loads the dems have been sending since O was prezzy.

465 401 I think there's a lot of pent up sexual frustration about Tulsi here at the HQ. Whenever she comes up in any context, someone starts in about how she's evil. I think these people are essentially yelling at their own erections: "Stop it. this is just wrong. She's a bad person."
