73 The Woman, Israel
12 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was pregnant and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

The Red Dragon, Satan
3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven crowns. 4 And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and hurled them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her Child.

The Male Child, Christ
5 And she gave birth to a Son, a male, who is going to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her Child was caught up to God and to His throne. 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for 1,260 days.

Catholics typically interpret the woman here as being Mary. Hence Jesus referring to her as "Woman" in a titular fashion at the Wedding of Cana, and references in Genesis "And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed".

Collective pregnancy, labor, and birth seems like a relative stretch.

I once saw on a Catholic website that the idea of Mary having labor pains goes against Catholic doctrine, since labor pains were imposed on women as punishment for Eve's sin, but the Virgin Mary was sinless.

I'm not Catholic, so I don't know what the doctrine is. But I saw this on a very conservative Catholic site.

109 I once saw on a Catholic website that the idea of Mary having labor pains goes against Catholic doctrine, since labor pains were imposed on women as punishment for Eve's sin, but the Virgin Mary was sinless.

I'm not Catholic, so I don't know what the doctrine is. But I saw this on a very conservative Catholic site.

I was doing some research into the development of my neighborhood back in the day. My house in particular was built in '68 and first sold for $21,200, and the median income for this area was about $7600. Today the house worth about 12X and the median income is about 15X. We purchased our house, three bedroom ranch, full basemant, 1/2 acre corner lot, for $39,000 in 1974. Former owner paid $29,000 in 1969. House originally sold for $17,900 in 1959. Now, we were offered $365,000. But, at our age, we're staying in place.

158 My best experience at the DMV was during Covid, when I had to get new tags for my license plate. I had to make an appointment. When I went in there, there were only about five other customers at most. I was shown which socially-distanced chair to sit in to wait, but I didn't have to wait long because there was so little going on. When I was called, I went up to the window, paid the $5 or whatever it was for the new tags, and was out of there. The whole visit took maybe 15 minutes, tops.

I could stand those protocols being reinstated. But just for the DMV.

179 From Catholic.com re discussion above:

The idea that Mary did not experience the pains of labor is usually deduced from the fact that she was conceived without original sin (CCC 490-493). Since a consequence of original sin is bearing children in pain (Gen. 3:16), it seems fitting that Mary, who was preserved from the stain of original sin, would not experience its consequences.

The Church teaches that Mary’s virginal integrity remained in tact during the birth of Jesus (CCC 499, citing Lumen Gentium 57). It seems to follow, therefore, that she would have been free of labor pains.

One Scripture passage that many have looked to is Isaiah 66:7: “Before she travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.”

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at October 02, 2023 09:58 AM (xTRSc)

There's no dogma on it afaik. But there is certainly an ancient tradition that it was painless which iirc is at least as old as the protoevangelium of James.

Another side note on Mary's role as regarded by Catholics, the "beloved disciple" in the Book of John is usually also read to be a figurative reference to the audience, beyond also literally being John.

So "When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!”" positions her as a maternal figure for everyone.

We again see the use of Woman, which as I understand is clearer in tongues other than English to be an intentional reference.

200 Russian legislator suspects US labs’ involvement in strange infections in Ukrainian army

The cases of suspicious infections in the Ukrainian army that are difficult to treat are most probably connected with the operation of US biolaboratories in Ukraine, the deputy speaker of the State Duma, Irina Yarovaya, has said. "The Pentagon’s bio-laboratories in Ukraine are with a high degree of probability the source of infection of Ukrainian soldiers," said Yarovaya, a co-chair of the parliamentary commission for investigating the activities of US laboratories in Ukraine.

Arizona had 30K+ votes from illegal aliens (maybe just Maricopa County alone), and IIRC the state was won by 17K votes.

241 John MacArthur's annotation on the authorship of John

Instead, the author prefers to identify himself as the disciple “whom Jesus loved” (13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20). The absence of any mention of John’s name directly is remarkable when one considers the important part played by other named disciples in this Gospel. Yet, the recurring designation of himself as the disciple “whom Jesus loved,” a deliberate avoidance by John of his personal name, reflects his humility and celebrates his relation to his Lord Jesus. No mention of his name was necessary since his original readers clearly understood that he was the Gospel’s author. Also, through a process of elimination based primarily on analyzing the material in chs. 20–21, this disciple “whom Jesus loved” narrows down to the apostle John (e.g., 21:24; cf. 21:2). Since the Gospel’s author is exacting in mentioning the names of other characters in the book, if the author had been someone other than John the apostle, he would not have omitted John’s name.

It was a lot of things. I think a lot of it boils down to differences in language and culture, and the Patriarchs' refusal to acknowledge the primacy of the Pope.

When the Reformation got underway, a lot of Protestants thought that they could make common cause with the Orthodox, and, indeed there was one Patriarch of Constantinople, Cyril Lukaris, who is sometimes called the "Protestant Patriarch" because he was so sympathetic to their views. But, in general, the Protestants wildly overestimated the support their views enjoyed in the Orthodox world.

It's funny. I read that novel way back when it first came out in paperback, and (not being an SF or fantasy fan much then) was sort of disappointed in it. My mother found it horrible. A decade or more later I reread it, and appreciated Ira Levin's writing style, his portrait of mid-Sixties Manhattan, how he skilfully worked both big things and small into the narrative, and his handling of Rosemary's dreams. Those not only unsettle us, but give us crucial information about the plot forming around her.

You aren't accounting for inflation. Per the BLS CPI calculator $13,000 in 1975 had the same buying power as $76,609.17 today. So no, in terms of buying power no doubling. It's been essentially stagnant.

In 1970 median HH income was $8730 (per census). Median house price (per census) was $23,400. So about a 3:1 ratio. Today the ratio is 4-5:1. So yeah more expensive relatively speaking but not as much as some would suggest.

285 1960

Median house price $11.9k
Median househould income $5.6k
Ratio: 2.1

2020
Median house price $330k
Median househould income $67.5k
Ratio: 4.9

So the cost of a house compared to salary has more then doubled in real dollars

It was a lot of things. I think a lot of it boils down to differences in language and culture, and the Patriarchs' refusal to acknowledge the primacy of the Pope.

Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at October 02, 2023 10:53 AM (xTRSc)

The initial schism(Photian) and ones thereafter started with the Patriarch of Constantinople being replaced by the Emperor.

The primacy of the Pope is less disputed in early years, it is ecumenical councils that gradually elevated Constantinople, with the specific canons themselves being hotly contested.

Power struggles between different levels of the Church aren't that unusual and don't get as much mention in the histories. The East tended to view the Roman Empire as the Kingdom of God, with the Emperor as its living head, which is now a dead narrative. The modern accounting of the conflict is in my view anachronistic, mostly taking the Ottoman controlled Patriarch's position at face value.

Russian Orthodoxy's narrative is itself quite a bit different.

Student loan payments restart today, forcing borrowers to take on more debt and put off saving for retirement

"forcing"

Love how they never trace this back to the job market "forcing" people to have a college degree (HR tool to weed out job applicants), politicians insisting that "everyone go to college!(tm)," colleges for decades raising their tuition rates far above the rate of inflation (far exceed their value in most cases) that has been enabled by the government getting into student loans, etc.

These burdensome college loans didn't just magically happen - a lot of things have made this the norm, up to and including students willingly getting them.

288 Or Paradise Lost??

Interesting fact about Milton. Apparently, he was an Arian -- that is, he believed that the Son was a later creation of, and thus subordinate to, the Father.

I love Paradise Lost, I but I think it's lost some luster for me since I found that out.

If he was, it doesn't show up in his text. Jesus is a badass in Paradise Lost.

289 You aren't accounting for inflation. Per the BLS CPI calculator $13,000 in 1975 had the same buying power as $76,609.17 today. So no, in terms of buying power no doubling. It's been essentially stagnant.

That wasn't what you said. You said salaries had more than doubled, scorning someone for suggesting otherwise, using raw numbers instead of inflation-adjusted numbers. You can't even keep your lies straight when they're in print. LOL

295 I see that the usual asshats are claiming that New York's flooding of this past Friday was "unprecedented" and all caused by "climate change."

This is of course b******* so here is a good link to throw into Faceplant if you see people pushing this stupidity. It goes to the National Weather Service and is a list of major floods in Albany New York. Starting in 1857.

Refutation. It's a wonderful thing.

297 Housing is not expensive relative to incomes. It’s a myth propagated by millenials who live in San Francisco. And yeah sorry kids you're not buying a house there unless you hit the stock option lottery. For the rest of the country, housing is affordable.

You are insanely out of touch.
Even as a national average, since the 70s, house prices have tripled to near quadrupled.
Wages over that same span, have barely doubled.

That's the average--counting those houses in Nowhere.
Price a 2,000 sqft house in Houston or Nashville and tell me how someone on the average salary can buy that and raise kids.
