First-World Problems...

lavender56.jpg

I'm having a tough time with even a FirstWorldProblemTM. We have had several days of absolutely spectacular late-summer weather, I touched up some trim in the kitchen without spilling a gallon of paint, Amazon managed to deliver the batteries for one of the smoke detectors within several hours of ordering so I didn't have to listen to the alarm panel nag me to fix it, and I made a kick-ass brisket yesterday (more anon).

Wait! The lavender plant in the front yard isn't growing as much as I wanted. The internet assured me that if I pinched off the flowers, the vegetative growth would overwhelm the neighborhood in a matter of a few months.

The internet is apparently NOT all-knowing.

Shana Tova everyone!

Who knew?

9 Lavenders eventually end up looking like tumbleweeds in California. Even when well watered.

Jasmine is awesome. If there’s shade. Lantanas are gorgeous and bring in butterflies. Until they shrivel up and die in the first frost (keep them cozy next to the house). But rosemary just grows and gives rats a great place to nest, to boot!!!😄🐀

10 Looks like the weeds I spend hours pulling.

My lease says the landlord takes care of the front, I take care of the back. I spent this whole summer waiting for them to take care of the front, and finally got tired of weeds taking over the landscrape.

Yeah, it's a weird name for a native North American plant. It actually grows better in the northern 2/3rds of the country than it does here but I am going to try anyway. If I can get it to propagate, I will sneak it into all the vacant lots and overgrown ditches I can.

65 Hoisted on his own petard...

NEW YORK (AP) — Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine and also was a co-founder of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has been removed from the hall’s board of directors after making comments that were seen as disparaging toward Black and female musicians. He apologized within hours...

Wenner created a firestorm doing publicity for his new book “The Masters,” which features interviews with musicians Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townshend and U2’s Bono — all white and male.

Asked why he didn’t interview women or Black musicians, Wenner responded: “It’s not that they’re inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest. You know, Joni (Mitchell) was not a philosopher of rock ’n’ roll. She didn’t, in my mind, meet that test,” he told the Times.

192 I have one v.expensive watch. Wife gave it to me decades ago. She later claimed she got one hell of a deal and it was under a thousand; "they tell me" it's worth around $5K now. I would not have any idea whether it is accurate to 30 sec/day, because I keep it in a locked container and only put it on for Rolex occasions. May have used it three days in a row once or twice; other than that, it completely runs down between uses.

Found out by back-handing an exposed-crown Bulova into equipment I was moving (twice) that you don't wear a watch on a job that is worth more than a hundred. Recently I found out that my hundred-dollar watch is $175 now.

The fairies were terrible. They ran around in costumes made of chiffon, waved really weird wands, and acted like a bunch of two-year olds.

I distinctly remember the merchant application mentioning Renfaire, not pirates, not fairies. There was supposed to be a pirate thing a couple months down the road.

Biggest problem with linux today is drivers. So, if you like cutting edge hardware--best to either only buy the brands that support linux or stay away from cutting edge hardware. Laptops are the biggest problem right now because a lot of them use very proprietary drivers and power management schemes that can break under Linux. Intel inside laptops are a bit better for porting to linux btw than those by AMD partners and Dell did install Linux on laptops but dunno now.

Brother and Epson have good support for linux on new hardware in printers and scanners (Canon did as well in the past) Hp sucked at it. So buy Brother and Epson hardware (maybe Canon). Graphics card drivers can be another bugaboo--best to stand back a bit from the cutting edge. Motherboards, Intel has superior support for Linux, AMD and its partners, spotty but doable.

Laptop or desktop? Laptops are more difficult to unbrick but Rescatux on a Live USB can do the job of rescuing files, fixing boot loaders like Grub, etc. Was free to download the last time I checked and it will fix a lot of Linux or even Windows problems when the OS won't boot.
https://www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux/

You will however, have to change the boot sequence in bios to boot from a usb or even a live dvd. So you need to know your way around your bios and it might also be a good time to upgrade the motherboard bios while you have to go in there.
