THE MORNING RANT - “Surreally Good” Economy: Incomes Are Falling, Prices Are Rising, Sales Volumes Are Declining, and Consumer Delinquencies Are Increasing

It is not my intent to resurrect Monty’s DOOM format in today’s post, nor is this a prediction of a recession or other economic turmoil. However, there are some strong signals that consumers cannot keep up with inflation and therefore have been forced to reduce the actual volume of goods they are purchasing.

Most economic reporting from the legacy media giddily reports increases in consumer spending as proof that the economy is roaring, but if spending is increasing by an amount that is less than the actual inflation rate, then there is a net reduction in actual products being sold.

Before I get into the meat of today’s rant, here is an example of the elite media shamelessly spinning that current economic data is “surreally good,” with Christiane Amanpour and Paul Krugman puzzling about the “disconnect” among people who don’t appreciate this great economy.

The economy is not surreally good, nor is the economic data. The Census Bureau just released some information this week which contradicts the fraudulently rosy statistics that the Labor and Commerce Departments have been pushing out.

U.S. Incomes Fall for Third Straight Year [WSJ – 9/12/2023]

Surging inflation gobbled up household income gains last year, making 2022 the third straight year in which Americans saw their living standards eroded by rising prices and pandemic disruptions.

Americans’ inflation-adjusted median household income fell to $74,580 in 2022, declining 2.3% from the 2021 estimate of $76,330, the Census Bureau said Tuesday. The amount has dropped 4.7% since its peak in 2019.

Hmmm, median household income peaked in 2019. Who was President then? And now, adjusted for inflation it’s persistently decreasing under President Biden.

While the following headline follows the cliché of ”World Ends, Women and Children Hit Hardest,” the story itself is an indictment of how destructive Biden’s inflation is to those living payday to payday.

America's Poverty Rate Soared Last Year; Children Were Among the Worst Hit [CBS – 9/12/2023]

The surge in poverty is "stunning," Sharon Parrott, president of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said in a statement.

The rise in poverty amounts to an increase of 15.3 million people around the U.S. living in poverty, according to the left-leaning think tank.

That is 15.3 million people who might disagree with Paul Krugman.

The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which measures whether people have enough resources to cover their needs, was 12.4% for U.S. households in 2022, an increase of 4.6 percentage points from a year earlier, the Census said on Tuesday.

The child poverty rate, as measured by the SPM, jumped from a historic low of 5.2% in 2021 to 12.4% in 2022, the Census said. That's the largest change in child poverty since the Census began tracking the SPM in 2009, Census officials said.

With consumers unable to keep up with rising prices, they are cutting back on their purchases, resulting in fewer actual product units being transacted in many cases, even though inflation is still pushing the total price tag higher.

For example, Kraft Heinz is selling 7% less total product, even though its actual revenue is up due to inflation.

Kraft Heinz Sales Miss Estimates As Higher Prices Hit Demand [Reuters – 8/02/2023]

Kraft Heinz's product prices rose 11 percentage points in the second quarter ended July 1, driving a 7 percentage point decline in volumes. In the prior quarter, volumes had fallen 5.3 percentage points year on year.

Of note in that quote about Kraft Heinz, they have raised prices by 11% over the past year. The politically-motivated prevaricators at the Bureau of Labor Statistics claim that the inflation rate is under 4%.

Procter & Gamble is also seeing a decline in total sales volume…

Procter & Gamble Sales Rise Slightly, Fueled By Higher Prices [CNBC – 7/28/2023]

For roughly two years, P&G has been raising prices on its products to mitigate higher commodity costs. Yet customers haven’t been as willing to stick with P&G’s brands, leading to five consecutive quarters of volume declines.

In another recent story in a trade publication about P&G’s sales volume decline, it notes that “The prices of Pampers and Gillette were also up the last two quarters and are 10% more year over year.” That is 10% real-world inflation, which is triple the phony inflation rate being published by the Department of Labor.

One more…

General Mills Warns Against Promotions to Boost Declining Volumes [Food Navigator – 9/08/2023]

General Mills, Conagra, McCormick and many other CPG companies all reported strong organic net sales gains during their most recently reported quarterly earnings this summer, but almost all this was driven by multiple rounds of price increases over the past year that masked unusual declines in volume during the same period.

With consumers facing a loss of purchasing power and making fewer purchases by volume, every supplier and vendor involved in manufacturing those consumer goods and bringing them to market will also see a loss in sales volume too, an effect that ripples through the economy, which would explain the crash in cardboard box sales:

Worst Cardboard-Box Recession Since 2008 Could Be A Sign Of Broader Economic Weakness [Business Insider – 7/26/2023]

Cardboard-box sales have seen the biggest contraction since the Great Recession of 2008-2009.

Packaging Corp. of America just reported an almost 10% year-on-year slump in second-quarter shipments.

Cardboard, often overlooked, can be a reliable economic indicator given its key role in e-commerce and the shipping of goods.

Unsurprisingly, trucking freight volume is down 9% year over year because there are fewer products being shipped.

Truck Freight Volume & Spending Decline by Sharpest Amount Since Early COVID-19 Pandemic [Monitor Daily – 8/02/2023]

Truck freight volume and spending in Q2/23 declined by the highest levels since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the latest U.S. Bank Freight Payment Index. Spending by shippers dropped 10.9% in the quarter compared with Q2/22, while shipment volume dropped 9%.

Maybe everything has just bottomed out. Maybe trucking and cardboard and diapers and all the other products that have seen unit declines are about to start seeing volume increases again. Maybe we’re about to enter an economic rebound that is as rosy as Paul Krugman’s make-believe world.

But where is the money going to come from? Credit cards and auto loan delinquencies have surged and continue to rise rapidly. Take a look at this chart:

Delinquencies by type of debt.JPG

Consumers are tapped out and their paychecks continue to lose ground against inflation.

Again, I’m not predicting a formal recession (which this administration would never declare anyhow) but consumer spending behavior is certainly indicating that an economic contraction of some sort is already under way.

LOL.

Because raw numbers don't mean dick when the amount of shit you can buy is declining while the amount of shit you must buy is remaining - more or less - stable?

Or is it because some people aren't total smoothbrains and can acknowledge while his own personal situation might be okay, the country at large is doing less well?

I dunno. You tell me, Paul. You're the friggin' Nobel laureate.

Which is actually important. P&G is a bellwether in some ways, because they make consumable necessities. It ain't cell phones or ceiling fans or cars, it's soap and toothpaste and razor blades and the like. When those sales rates decline, it means either that people are using less (shaving less, cleaning less, etc.) or that they're pivoting to substitute goods.

I doubt people are using appreciably less, which means they're shifting to generics or lower-quality items. Giffen Goods are back, baby!

I would be interested to know about some other similar bellwethers like Unilever and SJ Johnson.

Depends. It is assumed now. If you get the long-form Census, it still has that stuff. But it isn't a yes/no, it's a "how many?"

76 “There’s a really profound and peculiar disconnect going on.”

Government workers fall into 3 groups:

1. Military - the non-political people don't count for this discussion.
2. Normal workers - they cannot lose their job, their pay will always be increased, they get a pension which the citizens will be taxed to provide, some of them get kickbacks from the industries they "regulate".
3. Elected officials - they can raise their own pay whenever, they get a pension which the citizens will be taxed to provide, they are not affected by insider trading laws allowing them to become rich in an unethical manner.

Yeah, a disconnect exists but it ain't on our end.

119 I watch a lot of Economic talking heads. More than any sane person would. Here's a few thoughts:

1) Most try to describe the current economy in terms of previous economic events/periods. This economy is unique because we haven't done most of these things before. Old patterns won't hold. This is a unique distortion of the markets.

2) The Fed is stuck. In order to mitigate the massive liquidity injection, the obvious tool is selling the securities on the FED balance sheet. They bought them to inject cash, now they need that cash out of the economy. However the higher interest rates have driven the market value of the securities under water. So they can't sop up the cash reverberating around.

C) Don't be surprised to see rate cuts sooner and faster than most believe. The interest on the debt FUBARs the spending curve, and Dems want a juiced economy for the election year. Political pressure will be huge to cut rates in the 1Q of '24.

4) There are people here smarter and with better info than me. What am I missing?

Maybe. There is a key difference that might support prices and prevent a full-on crash like we saw in 2006-2009: inventory, driven by the interest rate environment.

People who bought new houses (or refinanced) with 3% money are going to be very, very disinclined to disgorge the asset. When you have to borrow at 7.5% or more, it will be a financial death blow. Those people are stuck where they are and with what they have for the foreseeable future and they won't move unless they're forced to (job loss, divorce, death, etc.). Some people are going to royally fucked by this - especially those who moved during COVID assuming that asymmetrical wages courtesy of the work-from-home revolution were permanent - but most people are "just" stuck.

The shocking lack of inventory will provide some degree of price support even in the face of rising interest, unless a lot of people get in trouble all at once and are forced to sell anyway, come hell or high water.

I'm really surprised at how our move is happening under these conditions, but we're going to end up ahead.

Part of it was that we were not going to spend $900K on a house. We just refused to acknowledge they existed, so we cast our net wider until we found something more in our price range.

Once the recast is done, our monthly payment will be a few hundred dollars more than our current house, and we could potentially refinance, assuming rates drop in a year or two, to the point where we are paying less.

142 The economy is indeed going great . . . for certain demographics. Dow is at nearly 35k. I remember debating commenters here who assured me it'd be at 15k by now. Nasdaq is at 13700. I was assured it would be at 7500 now.

Markets are where the affluent measure their wealth. The rise in interest rates, inflation, and other metrics mean little. So what if a multi-millionaire has to pay $800 more a month for stuff? It's not moving the needle.

So when hack shiteaters like Paul Krugman say the economy is strong, he's correct -- for him and those like him.

143 Our experience with the increase in credit card use: we had to put the MoMee hotel on the card because hotels now want paid in full at the time of the reservation (we are admittedly also adding a night, so the expense is legitimately more), or within no more than two weeks. The "pay us *now*!" seems like an indication that there may be cash, or even payroll, shortages expected.

Hotels have increasingly been demanding prepayment to hold a reservation for a couple of years now. I suspect it has more to do with cancellations than inflation, but I'm not sure. It burned me more than once. I'd reserve a room and then the *hotel* would cancel it without notice because someone walked in the door. I didn't *prepay* the reservation, you see, which means I'm a deadbeat they can fuck over without compunction.

Those hotels are now on my shit list and I will not patronize them for any reason. Since those experiences in 2021, I now prepay my reservations.

At least here in AZ, there's a shit load of houses that were bought as investments purely for short term rentals like AirBnB.

I know some people that dabble in this world, and they said it's really bad in this space when it comes to finding renters.

Eventually I think these people lose these houses as rents won't support the mortgage.

In my perfect world, you ban these short term rental investments. It's destroying home ownership for new buyers and it's also destroying neighborhoods.

This is the one I question, and it comes down to history. Yes, things are weirder than ever and lots of trends are breaking, but this one is a very strong trend.

Historically, the Fed plays politics and fucks around for long periods of time but when the chips are down, it defends the Dollar. Eventually, political expedience and favors take a back seat to defending the currency. My bet, right now, is that the Fed will remain true to form. If the US budget detonates, then so be it - but the Dollar will be defended. I will retain this outlook until either there is a meaningful change or until Jerome Powell is replaced as the Fed chairman. When the new guy comes in, he might be of a different type and all bets are subject to change when the rules change.

209 I've harped on it a million times. Reporting of Core CPI is relevant during short-term price shocks in energy and ag markets. Core CPI numbers are not just useless in the context of structural inflation - they actually hide a huge amount of it, because consumer dollars are fleeing into markets with lowest price elasticity of demand.

Shorter version: any poor dumb mofo trying to shop for a family of five in this wretched regime can tell you the CPI numbers are complete horseshit.

211 GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy vowed to cut 1 million civilian federal employees from the government if elected to the White House next year.

Why would people vote for someone who promises to gut the government by 75 percent? He's a silly man who apparently never thought cutting that many jobs would affect governmental services all over the nation.

Smarmy also doesn't realize that federal employees make sure your SS and Medicare sign ups and claims are finalized and paid. Machines don't do that. GOP is intent on making federal employee's bad guys.

The brain dead people who would embrace this person and his aims are too stupid to stop and say "well if 30% are leaving in 5 years doesn't somebody have to do the work they were doing?" our ludicrous media treats him as a serious matter and gives him airtime. Just like that pathetic RFK Jr.

Republicans should just admit that they are promising to increase unemployement when talking about cutting federal spending and cutting federal jobs.

Oh yes. The Fed's balance sheet is definitely underwater right now and will be for a long time to come. For most enterprises, that would mean bankruptcy. The Fed is different, in that it - sort of by definition - can't have a cashflow problem.

The underwater balance sheet means that it *can't* extract the excess cash from the economy through asset sales. It can remove some of it, but not as much as it injected over the past 20+ years of interest repression and QE. It lessens the impact of asset sales as a policy tool, but it won't result in bankruptcy.

I would argue that crypto is actually more akin to a religion. It represents an ideal for the libertarian-minded person, gives vague promises of a time to come when things will be better.

And like all religions, is filled with people looking to grift off of that and take the money from the faithful.

Bitcoin is only one facet of crypto. Even bitcoin has only really be trading in any remotely public arena for maybe 5 years. And it's been heavily volatile during that period. As I mentioned above, you can make money trading it -- if you are very very lucky. There will always be a market for trading anything that can make money, even if mostly depending on luck, and especially if the trading exchanges and brokers are making money.

374 Ah, not to worry. Despite the price of actual goods going up by 10-11%, your purchasing power is so much higher because all your electronic goods now have so much more capability that your dollar now buys more.

That offsets the fact that ketchup and diapers cost more.
