Surprise! Biden's Chief of Staff is Profiting Off of Biden's "Environmental" Policies

The endless grift. The endless predation of the DC Connected Class on the citizens of the United States.

As the Biden administration pursues its strategy of building resilient supply chains for the surging clean energy industry, one metals company has seen a substantial boost. Last month, TechMet, which is part-owned by the U.S. government, announced that it had closed a $200 million fundraising round. Celebrating more than $180 million invested in projects around the world over the last year, At the G20 summit last November, President Joe Biden touted a TechMet project in Brazil to mine nickel and cobalt for electric vehicle batteries. And during her trip across Africa earlier this year, Vice President Kamala Harris announced a U.S.-brokered agreement between TechMet and another company, Lifezone Metals, to mine one of the largest nickel deposits in the world: Tanzania's Kabanga mine.

Yet White House chief of staff Jeffrey Zients, whose job involves implementing the administration's policy, has sidelined himself from the U.S. government's deepening involvement with TechMet -- thanks to what could be perceived as a conflict of interest stemming from his family's vast wealth.

TechMet's CEO is Brian Menell, a South African mining baron and the brother of Zients's wife, Mary Menell Zients. Jeffrey Zients disclosed the relationship when he was brought on as chief of staff, the White House said, and recused himself from all matters related to the company. His recusal, which has not been previously reported, was the appropriate move, as ethics experts agree, but it also means the U.S. is operating without its chief quarterback in its dealings with a major player in the green energy transition.

...

U.S. backing for TechMet dates back to 2020, when the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation put $25 million in the company under President Donald Trump. Last year, the DFC approved another $30 million of investments in the company's clean energy projects. The Biden administration went on to facilitate a partnership between TechMet and Lifezone in Tanzania, which Harris promoted in March, as part of the Biden administration's $560 million of support for the East African country. Thanks to U.S. diplomatic and financial coordination, the Tanzanian government partnered with Lifezone to extract nickel from the Kabanga mine in the northwestern part of the country and deliver it to the U.S. and international markets by 2026.

Zients's relatives, it turns out, had a stake in both sides of the U.S.-brokered agreement around the mine. The Zients Children's Trust, which was set up for the benefit of Jeffrey Zients's adult children, owned more than 400,000 shares of Lifezone before it went public on the New York Stock Exchange in July. The company had a successful first day of trading, seeing its shares jump nearly 50 percent. (Zients is not required to disclose the holdings of his adult children. Sharma said that he is not involved with the trust. "He does not have a position with, receive income from, or have a financial interest in the Trust," she wrote.)

Even as the clean energy revolution marks a much-needed break from the era of fossil fuels, the potential for the family of the chief of staff to profit from the deal around the Kabanga mine illustrates that when it comes to resource extraction from the periphery flowing to the benefit of elites in the center, structurally, much will remain the same.

It's belt-and-road. Nobody but the Party members make any money on the exercise. The foreign targets of the investment end up dependent on the state-owned enterprise that helped them develop it, and all of the money and then some is stolen by Party members back home. Both the source country (Red China, the United States, etc.) and the target country (Sri Lanka, Brazil, Tanzania, etc.) lose but the middlemen and Party bosses get rich. In the best case scenario, the source country wins (gets the resources), but that usually doesn't pan out.

Both the source country (Red China, the United States, etc.) and the target country (Sri Lanka, Brazil, Tanzania, etc.) lose but the middlemen and Party bosses get rich. In the best case scenario, the source country wins (gets the resources), but that usually doesn't pan out.

Yes, and it's set up that way. The whole structure is so the middlemen and party bosses (of both source and target countries) get rich. That's the whole point. The sole point. The target country will 100% get shafted, although maybe for a short time it will appear to be winning. The source country might end up with some of the resources, but that's almost by luck rather than design.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison,

What intrigues me is how much of machine politics is family dynasties. The father was a congressman, the son is a congressman, cousins are in the state assembly, etc. This is one way we end up with very liberal GOP politicians from conservative states - the son or daughter of a republican stays in the republican party b/c of the family political machine, even though their actual political bent is very liberal. See, e.g., Lisa Murkowski.

Family political dynasties show how dumb voters truly are - voting for the wife, son or daughter of some politician based solely on name recognition. In my mind, democracies (even republic representative democracies like the U.S.) based universal suffrage are always doomed to failure because the vast majority of people are complete idiots and will vote for the stupidest possible people and policies.

Twin brothers William and Michael Null and a third man, Eric Molitor, were found not guilty of providing support for a terrorist act and a weapons charge on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

They were the last of 14 men charged over the militia kidnapping plot on the eve of the 2020 presidential election. Nine others have been convicted.

Prosecutors had alleged that the Null brothers and Mr Molitor had participated in the scheme by taking part in military drills and travelling to governor’s lakeside vacation home in Elk Rapids, in northern Michigan.||

We've also encountered situations where a student only has ONE name instead of the usual 2-3 (or more). That also causes problems with certain databases.

There is so little talk about the inevitable budget fight because it's not the failure theater they want you to pay attention to.

The House is doing individual budget bills the right way, but it's going to fall apart as soon as they get to the Senate and McCarthy and the rest of House leadership will force the vote on the CR. It'll be a small item of things they can point to as having done it right but, drat, those dastardly Democrats in the Senate couldn't let them do it.

It's also less flashy than impeachment. This is about fundraising first and foremost. Impeachment failure theater will raise more money than budget failure theater, but the budget stuff they can put in an email.

204 190 Yes, their suicidal EV obsession is hurting, but it's also being used as a smokescreen to obscure that buyers aren't buying their shit. Japanese and Koreans nearly completely own all non-truck markets.

Even trucks though. Why buy a Silverado over a Tundra? And if you say cuz ‘Murica, remember the tundra is built in Texas while most Silverados are built in Mexico.

Tundra is half-ton. That's fine for daily use, but not enough for many other uses, like heavy towing or hauling. Many buyers need (or want) the 3/4 or full ton. And I've actually driven the Tundra, Silverado, Ram and F. The Big 3 full-size trucks are nice. That's where they spend their money in R&D.

Toyota is limited in what they can bring to market thanks to the shitty distribution deals they signed in the 50s when they first entered the US market.

So they mostly sell to foreign markets and foreign markets do not need or want monster pickup trucks.

They make less than 5pct margin on every vehicle they sell in the US.

And with sh*t going sideways in the US auto market, I can see them pulling up stakes and not selling anything in The US and Canada.

All this within the first 20 k miles. And that was the last time I ever (or will ever) own a UAE made piece of junk.

GM made a deal with the devil (Obama) and accepted billions in bailout money, with strings -- more like Gleipnir -- attached. GM and the rest are completely dependent upon the good favor of government. They will ask "how deep?" when told to suck government dick. But don't you worry, they are already angling for another bailout to cover catastrophic EV losses. That's probably 50% of what this UAW strike is all about.

Speaking of, did you know Blackrock bought up huge tracts of forest?
And then started suddenly pushing ESG with, coincidencently, a massive stock of carbon credits to sell?
And now they got some ratings agency to declare Bitcoin is ESG friendly?
Just as they are, purely by coincidence, buying millions in Bitcoin?

So, the "E" is to scam them by selling them their green products. The "S" to ruin their valuation for shorting. And the "G" to take them over.
