Top Story

  • Intel has shown off its new Thunderbolt 5 controllers (though those won't actually arrive until next year) and announced details of the standard, most of which we already knew. (AnandTech)

Also they lie about USB4, but what else is new?

Thunderbolt 3 and 4 are the same speed - 40Gbps - and USB4 is based on Thunderbolt 3.

Thunderbolt 5 doubles the speed to 80Gbps, and has a special mode for video where it can transfer 120Gbps in one direction and 40Gbps the other way. It has four lanes, and usually there's two in each direction, but if you're mainly using it in one direction it can dynamically configure itself as 3+1 instead of 2+2.

With this you can run two 6k monitors from a single port.

Other details I don't remember seeing previously are support for at least 140W power delivery, 64Gbps networking - though only really between two computers, since Thunderbolt network switches aren't a thing, and something welcome and a little surprising: It supports the new speeds on existing Thunderbolt 3 and 4 and USB 4 cables up to a distance of 1 metre.

Beyond that you need active cables with tiny chips in them and those don't exist yet for Thunderbolt 5. The increased speeds are produced with the help of trinary encoding, while passive cables don't care that you're sending voltages of -1 / 0 / +1 instead of just 0 / 1, those tiny chips very much do.

It began an hour ago and I have no idea what has happened so far. But, Karen Witter! She apparently was one of the rare Playmates with some actual acting talent, and who also has had a happy life.

13 I'm not familiar with the latest in gaming companies but it seems Unity is purposely trying to destroy themselves. Seems odd. Oh well, I'm not a Buzinezz Major, so what do I know.

Used to play LOTS of racing sims. EA was uniformly awful. I mean the gameplay was fine. There World Superbike Sim was great, right up to when it would just lock up and crash. Buggy POS. All of EA sims were like that. I miss Sierra. They made great racing sims. Grand Prix Legends, Indycar II, NASCAR II, etc. Microprose made Grand Prix II which was a great F1 sim.

18 New Mexico's Attorney General sent the Tiny Tyrant (tm) a sharply worded 4 page letter about her canceling the 2nd Amendment. Short version: Piss off defend yourself in court. I'm pretty sure this is going to piss her off.

One of the interesting points he made is she has completely distorted the intent of the public health emergency act, which is limited to things like communicable diseases, and applied it to a situation that is a public safety issue. This apparently too is a problem. The levels of stupid she's unleashed just keep revealing themselves.

And for extra credit, The federal judge that's going to hear all five or six cases postpone the first one indefinitely. And yes, he's a Biden appointee. Great.

That's all for right now from the Land of Martial Law.

21 Since it's iPhone 15 pride month, I think it appropriate to note that not all cell phones work out well. Behold Microsoft's Surface Duo. They announced over the last few days that they're no longer going to support it. This implies that the Surface Duo 2 is toast next year when it hits its 3-years of updates limit. And if you've never heard of the Surface Duo phones, you're in the majority. When the original one came out, the nitwits over at Windows Central tied themselves in knots for a year over about how it was the greatest phone ever made. I think Microsoft sold six copies before they lowered the price from $1,500 to $400.

45 My wife has been planning the monthly retired teachers luncheon for the past two years. One of the ladies wanted to have the lunch sometime at this restaurant on the river that is nearer her house. We have been there a couple of times over the years and if you want to have a burger and beer by the river it's okay, but there are better choices.

Soooo, my wife finally says "fark it" and sends out the invite to the place 2 weeks ago for the lunch today. They are to RSVP. It's an email and real easy to respond to.

Only 5 are coming out of the 20 that sometimes show up. And the one that was whining about wanting to go there did not even reply to the invite.

The only mall now left on my side of the river is like that too. It was my first mall, way back when I was about thirteen, and it amazed me with the shopping choices. But it began to decline even before Katrina. It's open again, looks good, and there are three anchor stores, including a Dillard's. But the groups of yutes, the fatasses with outlandish weaves and nails, and the utter lack of anything but food court, "urban" wear, and clothes and items for women and children makes it a no-go for me most of the time. And I used to shop there every week or so.

62 From Consumer Reports, who loves them some EVs, as they answer all you EV questions....

"In cold weather, an EV's range can drop dramatically because of the limitations of battery chemistry and unique power demands, such as managing battery and cabin temperatures. In our tests, we found that cold weather saps between 25 and 32 percent of range when cruising at 70 mph compared with the same conditions in mild weather and warm weather, respectively. Even with air conditioning on, we found that 80 F weather was optimal for battery range.

Before you drive, you can warm up your car while it's still plugged in. That way, you won't have to use valuable battery capacity to heat up the car's interior, which would reduce range. Warming up your EV while it's plugged in will also keep the battery warm, which makes it easier to accept a fast charge while on the road.

Nearly three in four student affairs officials say campus mental health has worsened in the last year.

I think they have something like a 7% success rate each year.

All that to say, the longer I live the more I realize that everything the government does is either money laundering or attempting job creation where there is no market.

It's similar to the millions of gallons of milk thrown away every day in schools across the United States. They can't stop throwing the milk away or the dairy farmers, transportation, and refrigerator companies would lose millions, so taxpayers are on the hook for hundreds of millions to make sure tens of millions aren't lost by the contractors.

116 The number of children living in poverty in the US more than doubled over the last year following the expiration of federal pandemic aid that Congress declined to renew despite a historic plunge in the nation’s poverty rates.

Poverty among children surged from 5.2 per cent to 12.4 per cent, marking the largest surge in child poverty since the US Census Bureau’s adoption of the Supplemental Poverty Measure in 2009.

So you put millions out of work with lockdowns and declare them non-essential. Then you make non-market based payments (unemployment to those really not in the job market) so infusing trillions of fake (literally) dollars into the system.
Then when the market bakes these numbers into the system people are flush with unearned cash they spend. As these cash infusions die off (as planned) the system does leave the least employable with less than before the crisis as now they do not have the fake cash infusions and now must buy good and service at the new fake (inflated) rates.
PS Adding a million or so illegal aliens to the mix really add to the poor quickly.

I am waiting for him to say: 'I am emptying the strategic oil reserve as fast as I can. I am emptying our supply of munitions by sending them to Ukraine. THAT way we have a good excuse to let china invade taiwan and can tell them they are on their own. Xi promised me a billion dollars cash if I can pull all that off.'

They don't need the excuse of 'public health emergency.'

On the other hand, remember the Hong Kong protests before the iron fist of covid came down?

Has anyone else noticed less bugs on your windshield today vs 20 yrs ago?

May very well be true. Every vehicle is tested in a wind tunnel to provide the least air resistance. Windshields are now so tilted and huge it's difficult to clean them. Bugs still hit them but at a different angle, one less conducive to splattering.

199 “According to the whistleblower, at the end of its review, six of the seven members of the Team believed that intelligence and science were sufficient to make a low confidence assessment that COVID-19 originated from a laboratory in Wuhan, China,” Wenstrup and Turner wrote.
(Well they did have the sequence for about 6 to 9 months)
“The seventh member of the Team, who also happened to be the most senior, was the one officer to believe COVID-19 originated through zoonosis.”

“The whistleblower further contends that to come to the eventual public determination of uncertainty, the other six members were given a significant monetary incentive to change their position,” they added.

205 There is an alternative drug which is very effective at drying up a runny nose. That drug is called pseudoephedrine but, unfortunately, that’s the drug that was widely used by illegal drug makers to create methamphetamine. So back in 2006 controls were placed on the purchase of OTC drugs containing pseudoephedrine and in some cases phenylephrine was added as a replacement.

It was the FDA that took a great drug and made it bad.
