First-World Problems...

gutteroverflow.png

I whined and complained wrote about this issue a couple of years ago, and I made some lazy assumptions about gutters that were not borne out when I actually dealt with a professional...somebody who doesn't just talk out of his ass like yours truly.

Contractor-grade gutters are 5" wide, and cannot handle extremely heavy rain, especially the gutters on the lower roofs which have to handle the water coming off the upper roofs.

Sounds like common sense! The gutter guy who came out a few months ago explained that to me, using small words spoken slowly. The gutters he replaced with correctly sized ones are not overflowing today, but the other ones...the contractor-grade ones...are merrily spilling over.

I see another visit from him in my future...

Upper floors will remain 5" (and the leaders will run directly into the lower gutters and not let the water spill across the roof), but the lower floors are going to get 6" gutters.

Do the calculations, and size the gutters accordingly. But don't listen to the architect....

Next time, design the roofs to shed water where the people are not, and put in a dripline instead of gutters. They are a waste of money and require maintenance, which a dripline does not. Problem solved.

71 My old boss did a sabbatical in Japan, and became enamored of all things Nipponese. While there, he observed that the Japanese didn't use gutters, but rather strings from the roof line to the ground. The water beaded up and ran down the strings, neatly solving the problem of diverting rainwater. He tore all the gutters off his house and put up the strings.

There was only one fly in the ointment. The rain in Japan is misting type, while that here in NoVa, especially in the summer, is a torrential downpour. Naturally, the strings were utterly useless.

Me, I might have tried an experiment first with a few strings to see how it worked. It was especially embarrassing for him because he's an experimentalist.
