The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas discussed antisemitism in a speech delivered at the 11th session of Fatah's Revolutionary Council, on August 24, 2023. He said that the "truth" is that European Jews are not Semites, they are the descendants of Khazars, and therefore their persecution has nothing to do with antisemitism. Abbas added that Karl Marx confirmed that this is so. He continued to say that Hitler and the Europeans did not kill the Jews "because they were Jews," but rather they fought the Jews because of "their social role, and not their religion." Abbas explained that Hitler "fought" the Jews because they dealt with usury and money, not because of antisemitism.
That "Khazar" nonsense is ridiculous. It flies in the face of the historical record, and is an obvious ploy to delegitimize the continuous presence of Jews in Israel for 3,000 years. But the blather about Hitler's motivation is also an amazing justification for the destruction of European Jewry by the Nazis, and by extension the continued efforts to complete Hitler's efforts by the various Arab terrorist groups. And it gets better!
The U.S., who was not even a member of the League of Nations, forced the League of Nations to include the Balfour Declaration in its covenant. I am saying this so that we know who we should accuse of being our enemy, who has harmed us and took our homeland away, and gave it to the Israelis or the Jews.

As the mad Mullahs of Iran have said since they took control in the 1970s, the true enemy is Shaytân-e Bozorg...The Great Satan...America! Shaytân-e Kuchak...The Little Satan...Israel, is simply a closer target. And this is no secret, so why does the American left embrace a violent political movement that is intent upon the destruction of America, and by extension the West? Because that is exactly their goal, and they will accept anyone into the fold whose goals parallel that! The inconvenient complication is that if the Arab terrorists win they will line up the leftists against the wall and shoot them. Except for the gay ones, who will be tossed off of high buildings. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" is a convenient excuse to form awkward alliances, but it rarely makes any long-term sense. And that is curious, since the left has been magnificent at achieving their long-term goals using multi-generational efforts. That they cannot see the end game of their allies-of-convenience is a testament to the flaws of their movement and the irrationality of their political philosophy.

It is an "allies of convenience" things and always has been. The Left and Islam have superficially compatible overall goals - namely cultural revolution and the destruction of the West. The Left i s betting that the fall of the West happens first, with Islam's help but also that *their* cultural revolution overpowers Islam's, and that it will defeat - probably violently - Islam once the power transition is complete.
We're coming up on the time that their theory will be put be put to the test. I think it is wrong. Leftist victory in the West will lead to an Islamic west. Islam offers quite a lot that the Left does and cannot - namely, meaning.

The argument I've seen is they wanted a religion that both Christians and Muslims would respect but...not have any control over. We have no idea how prevalent Judaism actually became in their lands - the royal family converted...did the every day people as well?

If Israel has been Jewish for almost all of recorded history and the Muslims showed up in 600 something AD obviously it is Jewish land. Claiming they aren't real Jews is a dodge around that.
My memory is that genetic testing disproves the Khazar theory.

Probably the most "fair" thing to do would be send the Palis to those countries and give them the lands that were stolen from their former Jewish populations or the cash equivalent.

No. The purpose of funding the PLO, like supporting the mullahs in Iran or, indeed, any regime inimical to western "democracies", is to foster worldwide violence and uncertainty which causes the common person to agitate for more government involvement in everything to keep them "safe".

Leftism cannot do the same. It has nothing to fill that hole or provide existential meaning. Consumer goods and love of the state will not fill the hole - especially when the shiny consumer goods become scarce.

I have more personal experience of the PLO than most Americans, and many Israelis, since I visited their territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip as a kid, when they were still the dominant force there, instead of a satrapy. Even the UN camps. Very few Americans, even high ranking ones, actually went to these fucked up backwaters; it was a very cool opportunity, and I'll always appreciate it.

Islam is a real religion and it provides a code of values and existential meaning to its adherents. In short, Islam can - and does - fill that "G-d shaped hole in the heart" and do so satisfactorily. We’re a lot closer to govt owning and locating all housing than people think. Tens of millions already live on Section 8. Millions more live in some sort of rent controlled environment, where effectively, part of their market value rent paid for by the govt. Then all the “first time home buyer” assistance programs. Plus virtually all mortgages are backed by the federal government.
Housing in America for all intents and purposes is controlled by the govt. it wouldn’t take much to go to the next step where the govt also decides who get to live where.

They have no love for Israel but the Arabs - other than the Palestinian territories - don't particularly hate them anymore. They could start again, of course, but the fact that Israel hasn't been toppling Arab regimes or launched offensive wars puts it into perspective when compared to the Persian problem.
Much better to have detente with the Israelis if it means they can focus on Iran. And that is the real problem with regard to the State Department. State - like much of the rest of the government - has a major hard-on for Iran and has for decades. They do *not* want to support any action that will let the Arabs comfortably focus on Iran. This country's government has no love for Jews, but I don't think Jew-hate is the primary factor in what's going on.

They over-extend, get turned back and then fall because they no longer provide what is needed to the original (or preceding) groups sans the spoils of expansionist warfare.
Islam has over-extended and been turned back many times, but the areas where it became ingrained for a couple of generations or more *remained* Muslim. It's doing something for those who subscribe to it, and not just temporally.

Islam has over-extended and been turned back many times, but the areas where it became ingrained for a couple of generations or more *remained* Muslim. It's doing something for those who subscribe to it, and not just temporally.

I was more speaking rhetorically from DeSantis' position, and how that angle didn't make sense. If Trump is prosecuted in and obviously politically motivated manner, the base will be outraged, and anyone else running for the GOP nomination will look like they're tacitly supporting the political persecution. It's actually a devious and effective move by the Dems, because even reasonable Republicans that want to move on from Trump don't want to bail on him if he's a victim of a banana republic kangaroo court.

I would argue that in presidential politics, timing is everything. You run when you are "hot" or you lose your shot. DeSantis was "hot" b/c of his taking on the media and disney, so he saw a chance. the hope was Trump fatigue would allow him to beat Trump.
His mistake wasn't to jump in the race, it's that he is alienating Trump. If he jumped in, saw he couldn't win, got out, then backed Trump, he'd probably be the front runner next time around. He's going the GOPe route though of being somewhat anti-Trump, so he's ruining his future chances.

I disagree that it is a real religion. I think it is a revolutionary political philosophy that uses an ersatz religion to control its followers. Yes, there are carefully constructed approved behaviors that mimic real religions, but their goal is power, not creating internal consistencies and a moral code.

Most religions are, at there core, philosophies and a lot of religions also have political/governmental aspects (kosher laws, laws against usury). Islam, unlike any other religion, also has a major militaristic aspect that I don't believe any other religions has (in its actual religious texts - not in how the religious organizations act).
