Some Thoughts on Why Leftists Can Only Destroy and Never Create

A few days ago, I wrote that Democratic governance is willfully incompetent because they simply are not concerned about the mundane-but-crucial tasks of basic management, instead choosing to focus only on quixotic campaigns to "save the world" and "end poverty." These goals are unaccomplishable, and are stupid, but they feel like heroic causes.

In Maui, instead of making sure that their aging power lines were reinforced against being blown down by winds, and that highly-flammable grasses were cleared out from beneath these powerlines in case they did collapse, Democrat officials spent their money on Green New Deal boondoggles.

Defense contractors note that Arab states frequently complain that tanks and planes sent to them are broken. But they are only broken due to not having been properly maintained, per the clear guidance of the manuals that came with them. "Arabs just don't do maintenance" became an adage in the field.

Well, Democrats just don't do maintenance any longer, either. They spend all the public's money on building temples and burning sacrifices for their dark gods.

The psychology of most Democrats is pretty simple: They are neurotic people who are failures in most aspect of life, but have large egos and wish to be big and important. The constant crusades of big-government socialism, and the quixotic fascism of woke totalitarianism, allows these petty, marginal beings to feel as if they are strong-thewed muscular sword-and-sorcery heroes cutting down foes all around them.

Mitt Romney once observed -- shockingly accurately -- that when the government is big, the citizen is small. And that for the citizen to be big, the government must be small.

Democrats are small people, and have no hope of becoming big people through their own labors and virtues, and so need the government to be big, so that they can feel "big" by being a part of the Leviathan State.

And they need the government to be big to do what they themselves cannot: To crush their enemies, to see them driven before them, and to hear the lamentations of the women. They can't beat the many "oppressors" they are sure are colonizing and marginalizing them at every turn -- but a huge, intrusive, and violent government can. These bent creatures, twisted with envy and envenomed by spite, seek vengeance on a world that doesn't see them as special; they therefore worship a vengeful god called Leviathan Government which will smite their enemies.

John Hayward has related thoughts:

John Hayward
@Doc_0

The driving force behind lethally incompetent blue-state government is that no Democrat politician today thinks duty to their constituents is their top priority. All of them have higher concerns: global warming, diversity agenda, Party-building, and lining their own pockets.

Not enough Repubs see duty as their top concern, but at least some do, and at least most of them would SAY it's their highest priority if asked. The GOP has a zillion problems, but at least it retains some tenuous grasp of the ideal of politicians as public servants.

That's all completely gone from the arrogant leftist Democrat Party, and it has been for a long time. Dems don't see America as a great and noble nation they are called to serve. At best, they think it might become a decent nation if they can wield power to beat it into shape.

This is baked deeply into the ideological foundation laid within the minds of every Democrat. They're told all their lives that America was born in sin, the common folk are racists, private capital is exploitation, and their sacred calling is to deliver "social justice."

Well, justice is inherently coercive - it's why the police have guns. Almost everything in Democrat ideology is coercive, compulsive, and punitive. They view government as a vehicle for punishing unworthy citizens who deviate from their vision of fairness and equity.

Redistribution is coercive. You can tell Lefties are well aware of this because they scoff at the notion of people voluntarily funding charitable endeavors or community services. They laugh bitterly when reminded they could pay more taxes voluntarily instead of hiking tax rates.

For a Democrat, nothing is real, nothing truly counts, unless coercive government force is behind it. They believe in a wise and powerful elite imposing justice and equity on all those beneath them. They don't make polite requests of the public, or take "no" for an answer.

And of course, as the tawdry Biden scandals remind us, Dem politicians are absolutely obsessed with money and devoted to making themselves richer. They believe they DESERVE riches and luxuries, because they're the elite. They seethe at capitalists who live better than they do.

With those attitudes in mind, there's no way a Democrat politician will ever feel like a humble servant of the deplorable public, with a sacred duty to put the needs of their racist, sexist, transphobic, greedy citizens first. You don't feel humble before people you coerce.

Add the effects of media bias. Even the worst Dem politicians are constantly showered with puff pieces. Even the most obviously stupid and venal of them are lauded as moral and intellectual titans. They get unlimited credit for good intentions and zero accountability for failure.

The results are easy to see in every blue state and city disaster: an arrogant, corrupt elite with zero accountability and a long list of priorities that rank much, much higher than "duty to my country, state, or city and all my constituents."

The fact that Dems are never held accountable for the disastrous outcome of their policies means they endlessly double down on failure. They view every agency under their control as a piggy bank to be looted for ideological crusades, Party-building slush funds, and personal gain.

That's why the unfortunate constituents of ancient Dem regimes keep discovering their emergency systems don't work, their crisis managers have no idea how to manage a crisis, and their law enforcement bureaucracies are more interested in pursuing the law-abiding than criminals.

Dems hire swarms of government employees and turn them into ideological footsoldiers. Competence and efficiency are EXPLICITLY less important than ideological conformity - that's what all those mandatory DEI political exercises are about.

Ideological conformity automatically rules out policies and solutions that might be effective - and remember, socialists never solve problems, they "manage" them. Managerial liberalism is great at spending money and holding meetings, but not so good at dealing with a crisis.

These are problems that plague Big Government in general, and Lord knows Republicans aren't immune, especially the ones that attempt to ingratiate themselves with the Dem power structure as controlled opposition. They naturally inherit a lot of Dem attitudes.

But at least you can find Repubs that still take their duties seriously. Not to belittle their accomplishments, but some of those red-state miracle governors are simply displaying the baseline level of competence and responsibility that was more widely expected 50 years ago.

Our whole system is deeply sick and corrupt. Dems are accountable for setting that tone because they have decades of unbroken power in the most troubled cities, they control the media, and they absolutely rule the permanent federal bureaucracy. They institutionalized arrogance.

The monstrous portrait rotting in D.C.'s attic is a study of the Democrat Party and its ideology of coercion in pursuit of "social justice." States and cities are stacking up corpses because Dems love government, but have little interest in the responsibilities of governing. /end

Left leaning bureaucrats are rewarded for advancing the narrative and obeying the Dem politicians.

Notice not only are there no rewards here for doing what your voters actually want or providing high quality service to the people using whatever service your government org supplies there are also no punishments for failing to do so.

So people, being people, will do what rewards them. Which is NOT what the voters want.

PARTLY it's because the will turn everything they control to their own ends.

But I think it's mainly because their biggest threat isn't external, it's internal. And when they start going after their real enemies, they know other powers might stop them.

They look at Chile NOT as a warning not to take it too far, but that they have to neuter the military before it can overthrow them when they take it too far.

Close. True Lefties (socialists) hate charitable organizations because, if there is a human need not being fulfilled by government, they view it as a failure of government. Charities are constant reminders of government shortcomings and failure, and verification of human suffering and need.

I don't think the rank and file brain-dead socialist wants coercion...they think we'll all hold hands, sing kumbaya, get high, and government will take care of us like a benevolent parent, and we'll live like eternal adolescents with no stress or responsibility. I (mildly) disagree. They're okay with coercion, as long as it's being done to bad people. They just think that the majority of people will come around to seeing that they're right about everything, and eventually all those terrible Christians and nationalists and capitalists will fade away.

It never occurs to them that political violence tends not to stay that limited.

73 You can't launder money in the amount they want, by repairing.

Most repairs are done on old equipment, and there are easy comparables. So you know if you spend $100 million to fix power lines, but another town did it for $2 million, then something fishy is going on.

Green energy, and tech in general, is easier to launder through because their numbers are inflated. Some brand new Green firm gets VC capitol that gives it an inflated value of $100 billion dollars, well then it stands to reason implementing its tech will cost $500 million.

While many of the results of liberal actions come from laziness, most comes from greed.

76 I don't know that that's entirely true, though. What isn't emphasized above, but should be, is the degree they regard all that is really important as too pedestrian. They want "higher" goals, and want to address "root causes."

I've just been rereading Waugh's essays, and he points out that they cannot accept that simply maintaining civilization is a full time job. They feel a need to be something more.

In short, they despise the Kipling virtues.

IN my experience, the leaders are just as pig ignorant--the reason is that the will to power subsumes actually learning anything and the herd requirement requires them to recite bullshit as if they believe it. There are a few exceptions but almost everytime you actually have open questioning of the left's leaders---they have no answers about facts or history only rhetoric.

Rhetoric is useful for gaining power but totally unsuited to actually governing a society.

I understand what you're saying, but these people are not romantically aspirational or visionary even in an addled sense. I don't believe they seek grand, noble or chivalrous goals but instead the feeling of importance and the power and control over others that the pursuits provide. In a sense, they are anti-Quixotic, with bitter and anti-social natures; their commitment is to a meaner and more oppressed society not a more liberal and exhilarating one.

His ears rang for days after the event, he said. On online forums, F-150 owners have been airing similar accounts of an odd sound, which some describe as a “sonic boom” or “ear-piercing static.” Drivers, in some cases, were able to turn it off right away. Others say it lasted for 15 minutes or more, persisting even after the car was shut off.

You can see it in every facet of society. Even sports. I played professional tennis for a spell, and recently went back to my high school to do a little instruction to the tennis teams. None of those players try to hone their craft. None play tournaments over the summer. None take a few hours a day and practice. You can see it in business. Instead of pursuing a sound business plan over time, they focus on the present and only the present. You can see it in politics. Few consider the repercussions of actions if and only the immediate is important.

The opportunities for graft associated with maintenance are minimal. Let something major happen, though, like a fire or a bridge across a major river breaking and you can ram billions in "emergency" funding through with no thought. Some of that will... obviously... end up missing. Price of Our Precious Democracy ™.

Great Society ended up burying 58,000 American troops fighting a war where America had no essential interest but it took the voter's eyes off domestic issues that were also trouble for the Democrats.

Now the playbook is being run again in Ukraine. Tremendous amounts of wealth being consumed over there while they bleed the youth covid and the clot shots didn't kill.

Meanwhile utter wreckage on our urban centers.

But J6 protestors are being tortured because accountability for people on the right is important to people on the left.

142 Our whole system is deeply sick and corrupt. Dems are accountable for setting that tone because they have decades of unbroken power in the most troubled cities, they control the media, and they absolutely rule the permanent federal bureaucracy. They institutionalized arrogance.

And of course as we all know, it all started a century ago in the universities (see "The Closing of The American Mind" by Allan Bloom) -- and now like a deadly cancer has destroyed education and pretty much every other institution.

143 One of the clearest signs that the left has gone crazy is how much time local governments spend on global warming regulation. Global warming is, as the name implies, a global problem. Local governments have a miniscule influence on it. But local governments waste their time on global warming instead of keeping the streets clean and in good repair. It's crazy, but that's where we are.

Ackshewallee, I think that the latest SAW movie, SAW X appears to be highly influenced by the whole COVID/faux science and medicine foofaraw.

In the trailer I saw, the SAW dude, who is dying of cancer goes to a clinic in Mexico city that has a wonderful new cure for brain cancer, which they guarantee will work.

So, SAW Dude does the surgery and procedure, and it turns out that nothing was done. The treatment was a scam to get his money and leave him to die.

Then SAW Dude goes all sawy on their asses.

FIN

This is an insertquel between the first and second movies as SAW Dude has already died of brain cancer,.

Anyway, it's interesting that a horror movie that seems highly negatively influenced by the COVID mess is coming out from a studio that is jumping right back into the COVID masking mess with both feet.

people are strange.

The government was infiltrated by ideologues, who proceeded to hire more of them and drive all of the actually competent people out. The government then used its power to do the same thing in education and the private sector, to the point where nearly all of the people in any position of power today are there because they were selected for ideological purity and not competence. Ideologues tend to be smart on paper but lousy at actually running things, as Maui showed us.

* Except my 2017 Hyundai. No warning, no squealing, just metal-on-metal and a set of ruined rotors. That was a day when Mannix was quite unhappy, and since he can't depend on the brake pad finger to squeal against the rotor as expected, he now checks the brakes at each tire rotation.

196 @rbastid, you're right to follow the money. Here's another twist: Utilities make money for their investors by getting a return on equity, while they make nothing by getting reimbursed (through rate cases) for the cost of maintenance. So they will ALWAYS choose the capital-intensive solution over the cheaper alternative, which is to expend operating cost.

The PUC is supposed to be where those rate cases are held up to scrutiny and someone adult in the room asks, why, isn't building a gas turbine cheaper for the consumer on a delivered-cost basis (and more reliable) than building a wind turbine and batteries?

But the PUCs have been taken over by global warming zealots and no one is looking out for the customer. I'm sure that's true in Hawaii as well as many, many other states.

It would require businesses with more than 500 employees to reduce their work week from 40 to 32 hours a week. However, less work hours will not mean less pay!

Yeah. Right. No company is giving an 8 hour a day pay raise weekly. (Paying 40 & working 32)

And Pennsylvania can't force companies too.

True. If it all works as it's supposed to. Most maintenance issues are handled by warning lights. But that assumes the sensors and warning systems are all working. Which they usually are. Until they aren't. I've been asked to look over quite a few cars that had dangerously over-inflated tires, very low oil levels and pressure, bald brake pads, and/or non-functioning rear brake lights. Any one of those could lead to catastrophic results.

I worked in a place like that for a few years. We were in big trouble with our regulator, so everyone salaried was working extra hours to get us out of trouble. IOW 5-8s became 5-10s and we either did it or left. Enough left, that they decreed 4x10 hour weeks. Those morphed into 4-12's just to keep up, but at least we had Fridays off.

205 The progressive believes they are the central figure in their own heroic saga. Everyone else is an NPC - less than human - and exist only as problems to be solved. Gain their support? Feed them to the wolves? Depends on what the goal is right? Climate, covid, income inequality, racism, trans - whatever the issue - the progressive enters the arena on one side and works mercilessly to eliminate the opposition - by any means necessary. Because their goal is so pure, so good, so heroic - that any immorality is justified - thus giving a patina of righteousness to their darkest impulses. Any anyone standing on the other side of the line in their simplistic morality play is simply evil. So who cares what happens to them? In fact they deserve any punishment that the progressive deigns to hand out.

This is the story of every communist revolution, and why they always, always, always, eat their own. Their little internal comic book dramas require a bad guy. If there's only two people in the room - you are the bad guy. Not them. Never them. It's their story - they are the good guy - how can it ever be anything else?

I used to. It was the only way I could afford it.

About a year or two after I stopped living hand-to-mouth, I rolled out the stuff to do an oil change and then thought, "I hate this. I don't enjoy doing any of it. It's also a hundred degrees out. I'm not broke anymore. Is this something that it is worth it for me to spend money on instead of time?"

I hate doing it, so for me the answer was, "yes." I do some car stuff still, because repair shop rates are punitive. Spark plugs, for example.

In all three cases (2x for the LaCrosse), I climbed into the car, worked the key or button, and click-click-click. Older cars like my Park Avenue would signal you by getting a little harder to crank, then a little more, so you had some warning.

298 Talked to my kids about why no one ever spends money on maintenance.

It's b/c you have nothing to show for it. You still have the same thing, and you only can occasionally see improvement.

We had an abject lesson in my neighborhood this month. The HOA spent money maintaining the sidewalks and paid to replace all the ones jutting up that couldn't handle wheelchairs anymore. But they left some of the other damaged ones b/c of price. So, it's improved and wheelchair users can now make it through the neighborhood, but anyone looking wouldn't see "improvement", they'd just see "okay" sidewalks...

And this is the optimistic view - the other side is there's much less graft in maintenance vs newness b/c everyone knows what maintenance costs...

378 I remember when I was in high school, there seemed to be perpetual waves of protests -- mostly in Europe -- about nuclear war and the terrible threats of Thatcher and Reagan to peace; save the whales; stop US involvement in Central America; and the like. Just like the Left's bogeymen of today, these issues were unsolvable windmills to tilt at, but it made silly little brainless lefties feel powerful to band together against a common foe, making giant paper-mache heads of Thatcher or chaining themselves to military base entryways.

The same goes for today, except the antics have become more disruptive and threatening. Spouting off about AGW -- which is neither provable or solvable by proposed means -- has become the new generation's "existential threat." Instead of saving whales we're admonished to save the polar bears. Instead of nonintervention in Nicaragua, we're hellbent on fortifying Ukraine.

Jesus once quipped, "The poor will always be with you." I guess the same applies to youths with misplaced anxieties.

411 The instrument panel on my Buick didn't fail, exactly. All the info slots were still displayed -- just no data, no speed or odometer or TPMS. I thought, "Okay, dealer time." Then the next day, probably because of advice I got here, I went out and unhooked the battery; waited a few minutes (the posts and clamps were corrosion free); then reconnected. Problem solved. I had to reset the time and date and follow the screen instructions to lower and raise my front windows, but then everything was fine.

Ever since the gas stations started charging for air, or just took their pumps out entirely, I've decided its was cheaper and easier to just get the proper fill attachment (with pressure gauge!) to go on my air hose.

At least them I have some idea that the pressure is more or less what T wanted it to be.

437 The current state in NY more than adequately illustrates the point. It is a government beset with NYC liberals unrelentingly forcing their agenda on the rest of the state. They are detached from most of the citizens, but supported by those who lavish them with the state largess, which is ultimately the taxes people pay. It's really become a spoils system, and I dare say that given the number of people leaving, many have had enough of it. They don't cure any real problem, mostly because they are dumb, unimaginative, biased, unlawful weaklings who use government as a tool, really a weapon against the people. They've wasted countless dollars in pursuit of their follies, most of which are clearly based on their personal, misguided and destructive political beliefs. It cannot stand and it won't stand, at least not in its common form. No government will ever defy the will of the people for very long. History has proven that time and again I don't believe this will be any different, especially given the current class of feeble minded, doltish rulers. That should actually hasten their demise.

So even in an age where 'rule by the brains' was supposed to work, Asimov had most of the plot points of his trilogy be about how it failed and failed badly.

Introvert conservatism is an extinction level dead end.

American right does not have a unifying and animating culture it is spreading in notable numbers. We live on periphery of lefts world. This why left panicked about rise of alt right because that was an actual counter culture. Theirs is so toxic it can not survive competitve culture exposing its true nature.

Either we dedicate ourselves to create a pro freedom, faith, and family culture that also spreads it's influence through institutions and sociatal incentives or we we live submissive to those who do.

This is our cause.
