TGIF! Cafe

coloradomountains.jpg
Colorado Mountains After Thunderstorm
by Felix Lai at FineArtAmerica.com

Is your dog lazy? Have him do the yardwork.

Caterpillar rush hour.

Work hard, play hard.

This will not end well.

This orangutan will not lower himself to beg.

This cat is a natural-born blogger.

Patching up a fawn who was shot by an arrow, but not killed by it.

Some more gray, misty Scotland. Also a deer.

Elephant wants to play the drum too.

Another music appreciator.

Forward, lads! Duck or glory!

Street surfing, the Sport of the Future (TM).

Playing catch with your dog.

Shoplifting is legal now, so this dog should be okay.

This is basically me whenever there's a mechanical problem with the car. I just try to look like I'm really scanning the engine. What I'm really doing is thinking about licking myself.

Typical rookie move -- this dog could have completed his obedience training test with a perfect score, but he began dancing before he reached the endzone...

Is this dog teaching, or just showing off?

You guys did great work this week. Now take the rest of the week off.

Our new Portuguese Water Dog (currently in her first -- and to be only -- heat) does that spin move a fair amount. The missus called it the "zoomies" and thought it cute until she read that excessive instances of it occurring were a sign of mental distress in the animal. Now it's not so cute in her view.

I simply have been telling the dog to "knock it off", with mixed success.

Interviews are weird. I've stopped trying to assess how I did. The one I thought was my best ever, I didn't get an offer (internal candidate). Once I had an epic coughing fit during a pre-interview dinner (got a peppercorn stuck in my throat). I got that job, had a great 5 years there.

I hope you get an awesome offer soon.

109 Hmm. Just went to turn on the porch lights and a ginger kitteh was on my porch and we stared into each other's eyes through my door's glass side-panel with me not moving or turning on the light lest I frighten it badly. After a minute of staring he loped off and I turned the lights on.

I don't know if a true feral -- it wasn't super skinny but pretty buff; ears looked fine; and tail in one piece.

Unfortunately, I don't keep any milk or cream in the house although even then there are skunks in the neighbourhood and I wouldn't want to encourage them either.

112 Apparently it hit 67 here. Partly cloudy skies. Really a glorious day. I got some work on an appeal done and i might just walk down the hill (a real hill; we got 'em here) and check out the overpriced pot shop down in the Castro. It's a couple a $ more than my usual place, but i have to drive to that one. This way, i can pop the pills and the first 15 minutes of the wait is just schlepping back up the hill. And it is quite a hill. Oy vey, but it's exercise and that's good. A little endorphin rush followed by a delta-11-THC come-on (it's not a rush) then i'm gonna crank my guitar. Unless i get distracted by thinking about my appeal. How does a judge award conversion interest without awarding conversion damages? How does a judge find fraud but not award fraud damages? Oh, and she got the statute of limitations in CCP section 338(d) completely wrong. And her post-closing argument creation of breach of fiduciary duty and a 3rd conversion claim when only 2 were pled??? That's utter abuse of discretion.

I drove over that with the fam back in 2012. Beautiful place. We had camped for a couple of days on the Buena Vista side of the pass, in the San Isabel National Forest, about 9000 feet above sea level. I think Cottonwood Pass is a little over 12,000 feet above sea level (and there are no cottonwoods up there, just sayin'). I just remember it was a bunch of switchbacks to get up over the pass. It was late in June, and the pass had just opened. There were guys shuttle skiing up there. One guy would ski down, and then drive his car back up to the top of the pass, and then the other guy would ski down, and the first guy would drive the car down and get him, then come back up. It was only about 3-400 ft drop from where they started.
Then racing down the other side in the car, lunch in Gunnison.

Sure, but you will pay through the nose for Scotch that bad.

That's why I love Gimlets, you can dial them in any way you want.

You can make it more sour, more sweet, less sweet, less sour, you can make it booze forward, booze in the background, etc.

And best of all you can make em by the pitcher and it holds up.

297 Even a pedestrian Scotch like Balvenie Caribbean Cask has much more going on than Blantons. Really there is no hard and fast rule in my opinion, you have to take them one at a time. I do know cheap good Scotch is harder to find than cheap good Bourbon.

The $10 - $20 range has the most value in my opinion. When you go above that, it is mostly about rarity. There are exceptions of course. Some really good wines can’t be sold for less if the wine maker wants to stay in business.

309 ..Why to they age scotch in bourbon barrels?
Posted by: Javems at August 25, 2023 09:41 PM (P7Q1x)

Tour Guide at the Distillery Tour in Glasgow answered that very question, just two weeks ago.

It's because American Law requires Bourbon to be aged in NEW, charred, White Oak barrels. A Bourbon distillery cannot re-use the ones that've aged the previous batch.

So, they get sold cheap. Mostly to the Scotch industry, but some wines and many Brandys are also aged in Bourbon barrels.

Not only do the barrels make for more complex flavors, but they're far cheaper to buy used, than for the Scotch Distilleries to buy new, unused barrels.

And because the Scots won't pass up such a bargain.

321 Good stuff from Jim. Bourbon barrels are plentiful and the law pretty much makes the the go to for Scotch.

Similarly, sherried Scotch became a thing for economic reasons. The UK used to buy a ton of Sherry for consumption, and the Spaniards would ship it to them in casks. The frugal Scots would age their whisky in Sherry casks.

Today the Brits drink much less Sherry. And the Spaniards export it in bottles, not casks. But the Sherry flavor is a traditional Scotch thing. So know they build casks, season them with Sherry (cheap) and them use them to age Scotch. When you think about it that is crazy. God Bless the free market.
