Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: More Wind Energy Follies, and Some Good News as Proposed Wind Farm Projects Start Getting RejectedOne of P.E.I.'s biggest provincially owned wind farms is operating at less than 40 per cent of its design capacity. The wind farm at Hermanville, near the eastern tip of the Island, came online with 10 turbines at a cost of $60 million in 2014. On Tuesday, the P.E.I. Energy Corporation said only four of those turbines remain functional — with no reason given as to why. "It's something that needs to be rectified quickly, because it's standing in the way of our goals," said Steven Myers, P.E.I.'s minister of environment, energy and climate action.Actually, what’s standing in the way of this Canadian province’s “goals” is that it has embarked on the unattainable eco-communist goal of replacing reliable long-term energy sources with an unreliable short-term energy source. The graph below shows how the amount of energy produced by this wind farm started dropping significantly when it was only 7 years old. Nine years later, it’s only producing 40% of the electricity it produced when new. Not only is wind energy not a long-term energy option, it’s clearly not even a short-term energy option. Almost 16 million trees have been chopped down on publicly owned land in Scotland to make way for wind farms, an SNP [Scottish National Party] minister had admitted amid a major drive to erect more turbines.Have you planted a tree to fight global warming? Do you buy carbon offsets when you fly? Whatever you’re doing by either planting trees or “saving” trees, the wind industry is offsetting you by clear-cutting forests to slap up their unreliable, short-lived, bird-killing, wind contraptions. When the wind hustlers cut down a forest for a wind farm, would that constitute a carbon-offset-offset?
In this story (below) at the Independent, there’s another video of the incident. Aside from the burning turbine, it also shows that about half of the turbines in the wind farm aren’t spinning at all. “Wind Farm Workers Evacuated After Offshore Turbine Catches Fire” [Independent – 8/16/2023] Again, turbines that aren’t spinning or are otherwise out of service are something that I celebrate, because they have stopped killing birds in the pursuit of fairy tale energy. But still, what a colossal waste of money and unnecessary despoilment of nature.
The state’s largest utility company has decided not to move forward with a massive offshore wind project in Rhode Island, arguing that rising costs have made the deal too expensive for ratepayers and out of line with state law.“Sweden Rejects Vattenfall's Planned Stora Middelgrund Wind Farm” [Reuters – 7/27/2023] "An establishment at Stora Middelgrund would risk damaging sensitive natural values in an unacceptable way," Minister for climate and environment Romina Pourmokhtari said in a statement. "The risk of negative impact on national interests in shipping has also weighed heavily in the Government's assessment," she said.Related, not only is Sweden rejecting wind energy, but it is aggressively embracing nuclear power. “Swedish Government Plans to Build at Least 10 Nuclear Reactors” [TVP World – 8/09/2023] The Swedish government declared on Wednesday that by 2045, at least ten conventional nuclear reactors or a greater number of smaller, modular equivalents need to be built. The demand for electrical energy is expected to double over the next 20 years. The only future for the wind energy industry is massive remediation and deconstruction projects as these abominations are dismantled over the next couple of decades. With wind projects starting to be rejected, and nuclear returning to favor, perhaps we are at the beginning of the end of the wind-energy nightmare. ++++ Drive past any wind farm on a breezy day and you'll see a lot of windmills not turning. They're locked down. There is a ton of subsidy money to build a wind mill, but little if any for maintaining one. Need a new blade? Need to change the oil? Need a new motor? Need a hub? $$$$$$ Wind farms are far away (sort of by definition) and the parts are expensive but the crews and logistics are even more expensive. If you have a fault, just lock it up to avoid it from causing more damage. On a large enough farm, go out every now and again and cannibalize parts to get some of them back online (turn 20 locked wind mills into, say, 7-8 working ones) and write off the rest. I don;t have a link, but I saw Michael Schellenberger interviewed this weekend re: his new documentary on how destructive wind farms are to the environmnt looks to be good viewing. He talked about how the decibels of the sonar used by windfarms to scout the ocean floor for sites is illegally loud, and detailed how this will lead to right whale extinction. This was known and documented over a year ago, yet construction of several farms off of the east coast continue, while the usual animal rights/nature activist remain silent on dozens of whales dead on the NJ shore.
These wind and solar farms are doing serious damage to various bird, sea species. Posted by: Lizzy at August 21, 2023 11:06 AM (avru5) Posted by: Skip at August 21, 2023 11:06 AM (orrYN) 19

Some people, even on the left, are starting to wake up to the folly and futility of wind energy. A couple of recent headlines give me hope…
++++ After I graduated from college (mid aughts), a couple of friends were driving cross-country to relocate from NYC to the Pac NW (Seattle or Portland - I forget which) and one of them blogged about it along the way. She was ecstatic over the wind farms in southern Wyoming, and horrified at the massive plant and flare-off torch in Sinclair, WY. Sort of a "after driving through the clean, bright future, we drive through the horrible, polluting past" kind of thing. I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my own brain. Especially because the Sinclair plant is one of the most efficient (read: least polluting) plants in the world. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 21, 2023 11:07 AM (kBSKe) 22

You fail to note the scheme underlying many of these projects. It is also in many cases an effort to wrest the production of power from private companies. Many of these efforts are funded and ultimately owned by state governments. See NJ as one example. They want to own the power source so they can regulate everyone who uses it. It's a complete socialist anarchy fever dream. There isn't a single honest business case (or environmental) that makes sense. That's before we get to the fact this is simply enriching China and threatening our energy security, which weakens the nation.

IMHO, Wind and solar are best done at the individual level if they are to be done at all. They don't scale particularly well compared with conventional carbon fuel plants or nuclear.
At the individual level, waste solar or wind energy can simply be spilled without much consequence but as far as a grid is concerned--they threaten its stability and require excessive reserve capacity in order to insure reliability. End the subsidies to big solar or wind and they will disappear pretty quickly. Posted by: whig at August 21, 2023 11:14 AM (gQdmS) 41

He felt that as technologies advanced, it would become a better business case for individual ownership. Cost, efficiency and longevity of things like panels, batteries, etc. would eventually make sense. But that's not where people are putting their money in a rush to replace the current power company paradigm. He thought it was not just short sighted, but a deliberate attempt to weaponize power as another means to control people. The last thing they want is people being independent of their control. If wind power were a viable alternative to more conventional power sources, it wouldn't need massive subsidies and laws compelling its adoption to make it happen. This is not a new technology. If there was anything to it, wind power providers would have become rich and successful long ago. People don't "pollute" just for the sake of being mean to the environment.

I've yet to pass a so-called "wind farm" and seen more than a handful of the turbines actually spinning. I've seen this in several mid-western states, Texas and California.
No more than half a dozen out of 20, 30 or 100 of the things actually working. But somebody is making money off them. When it becomes less lucrative they'll stop demanding they be built. And because the leftists never clean up after themselves, the shit will rust in place and be eye sores until there's FedGov monies to "clean it up." Those contracts will obviously go to leftists. Posted by: Marcus T ------- Microinverters allow basically you to assemble solar panels like Leggos and given that the micro inverters change the power to 120 v at the source, they are safer in most respect and can be directed toward homes when the grid fails or to the grid if needed without bulky storage batteries (although Powerwall (Tesla's a/c battery system) and one other a/c battery system are pretty tempting for cold winters) to run things like stove vent fans. While roasting in the 107°F heat over the weekend, I noticed that the SPP's energy distribution pie chart had coal, nat gas and wind (in that order). Solar was a miniscule slice.
You can do useful things with solar for a single small house (I watch a guy on YouTube who's building an off-grid cabin in the middle of nowhere in Ohio and he has A/C), but it doesn't scale up. Posted by: Ian S. at August 21, 2023 11:38 AM (2ocoG) 161

Yeah. For grid-tie, it is probably at 240 split-phase and otherwise it's just 120v phases.
Posted by: Joe Mannix -------- Microinverter systems also produces more electricity as well from the panels because 12v panels routed into one big inverter basically average the input to the inverter--micro inverters allow each panel or groups of panels to produce maximum output without regards to what other panels may be producing. Microinverters also eases wiring, decreases fire and shock risk, and make it easy to add panels and microinverters to an existing system. Been looking at installing one of these as emergency backup and the fact you can install these as initially grid tied but reverting to home power if teh grid is down is a definite selling feature. IIRC, Dad and I were discussing what to do with peak energy produced from solar or wind. He mentioned a system of reservoirs and a hydroelectric plant. During peak, you'd pump the water into the higher reservoir in order to 'store' the energy and then during periods of lower output, you could empty the reservoir through the hydroelectric plant in order to generate the extra capacity.
I pointed out that it would be a massive undertaking (plus inefficient), but it made sense. He said it would work better than trying to make a massive battery now. The thing about the big Balls projects and ideas of the past (like ORION) were that they were practical solutions that would work to solve a problem NOW, with what you had, not with what you theorize you would have in 20 years (like fusion, for example.) I have a leaf blower with a 2-cycle engine. Fairly new. I used it maybe a month ago and all was well. I used it again yesterday and it started up fine, idled fine, etc. (I had to open the choke, of course, after starting). It also works fine and runs up as expected as the throttle is opened up - but only to about 2/3. The moment I cross that threshold, it starts to stutter and then dies. I could run it at 2/3 no problem. Do you have any recommendation for where I start looking on that? I know little about 2-cycle engines. At the end of the article, the Professor was fighting to keep his job. Posted by: JB1000 at August 21, 2023 11:48 AM (lPzYT) 222
Michael Shellenberger is spot on lots (as with the whole wind debacle), but that's not causing the whale issue. For him to acknowledge the real cause of the beaching issue is a whole Pandora's box that opening would crater his career: Magnetic Pole movement. If you think I'm full crank/nutter, might be a good opportunity to go over to Ben at Suspicious Observers and bone up on what's happening to Earth right now. As a proper perspective on things, it explains *way* better migratory problems (animals getting lost), Orca attacks, other stupid behaviors way better than localized noise.

She was still on board with candles. Crazy old lady, should have been born twenty years later and roamed the country in a Microbus.

No. Perpetual motion machines are impossible. The energy is consumed. The wind blowing through the first turbine has a lot of its energy sapped (the wind blowing out is less than the wind blowing in). On down the line.

I have a leaf blower with a 2-cycle engine.
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 21, 2023 11:44 AM (kBSKe) I would guess that something is restricting the fuel supply at high RPM. I know with single home sized turbines they don't tend to do well in the mountains because of the high degree of variability in speed and direction, and that they are more prone to mechanical breakdown from the literall beating that they take. Posted by: Romeo13 at August 21, 2023 11:47 AM (oHd/0) ++++ Battery-wise, yes. But startup power for A/C can be managed in two ways. One is modern inverter systems which convert to DC and have *way* less inrush current required. Another is called a "soft start kit" and it costs a few hundred bucks. It sits between the line and the compressor and sort of acts as an electrical equivalent of an ABS system. As inrush builds, it cycles quickly on and off and contains the load demand. It adds a component that can break, but it helps improve longevity and restricts inrush to the point that big portable generator can even handle A/C loads comfortably. I am having one installed later this year when I get my generator (I'm getting a 10kw sustained model) and start the project to add a transfer switch and all that jazz. would guess that something is restricting the fuel supply at high RPM. Fuel filters can be clogged by gum from ethanol-added fuel. Or the flexi hose in side the tank from which the fuel filter dangles could be compromised. You can replace the filter and hoses quite cheap. I bought those and a carb kit from Amazon, and just did that very job on a wheeled Weedeater I got for ten bucks at a yard sale. Runs like a pup, now.

I get my generator (I'm getting a 10kw sustained model) and start the project to add a transfer switch and all that jazz.
I have a 5 ton variable speed and can keep a 3000sqft house cooled into the mid 70°s in 100° heat, run the aerobic septic system, key kitchen appliances, computers, lights and all the vampire consumers (clocks, night lights, etc.) all from a 9000w inverter generator. You want an inverter generator for the same reasons you want a DC inverter A/C. The engine doesn't need to be constant RPM, thus saves fuel, less noise, greater run-time, etc. The trick is to size the appliances to fit within the capabilities of the generator. I've seen shorter and shallower installations work. YMMV Its year round comfort. Now lets talk about T Henry Moray's energy machine! The short version is that it uses the electromagnetic wave (approx 7.5 Hz) that encircles the globe (and is the basis for the ELF communication system) Building an antennae that captures a harmonic of that frequency, run it through enough transformers and such (using Radio Shack technology) and you too can have 50kw of power! When the only purpose for them is to launder tax money, through specialized projects who's only installers are either connected to government officials or give kickbacks to them. They made sure to really build in the grift long term too, by making sure the items go obsolete within years (or break) so they can argue that since they already spent $400 billion putting them up, then spending $275 billion to replace them is peanuts.
Im guessing the next grift is the recycling/ disposal which will again be limited to a few connected companies, who are paid through the trillion dollar government grant made just for safe disposal (the kicker is it won't be safe, but they know we won't find out for 50 years) Posted by: Rbastid at August 21, 2023 12:15 PM (0pYyT) 366

------ We have had this in place here for decades. 'Pumped Storage'. I recently had a greenie breathlessly tell me about how California was implementing 'water batteries'. About 20 years ago I was of the opinion that every wind project that was ever going to be built was already in the permitting queue. The primary reason was transmission constraints -- where the wind blows and where the demand for power is are far apart, and there needs to be transmission between the two places. The grid was not built to accommodate wind farms on the Great Plains and a massive amount of transmission would be necessary to expend it much.
I was wrong in one respect: the technology improved. Turbines got a lot bigger and more efficient, and subsidy chasing ("rent seeking" to economists) turned out to be a pretty powerful driver of capital expenditures. A more subtle driver was that utilities get a return on investment on capital expenditures, but not on operating costs (fuel expenditures), so they always have a bias for spending capital. PUC's are supposed to look out for the consumer, but in a lot of places they were captured by "climate change" enthusiasts and approved uneconomic utility capital projects. But the main point is that all the good locations were taken 20 years ago, and every incremental wind project is incrementally less attractive than the last one Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at August 21, 2023 12:25 PM (7B5FA) 411

We're in active conversation with two different real estate agents (one here, and one there), and she keeps saying, every six hours or so, "I don't want to do this at all." She wants a bigger house, but we wouldn't be able to afford one here on our current salaries. She wants to get away from this one guy she works with (just general assholishness), otherwise she would be fine at the current job. The new job would be a great team filled with people she already knows and likes, but she doesn't want to drive into work 3 days a week (though the campus is reportedly very nice). She likes this house. She doesn't want to go through the process of moving. She doesn't want to disrupt the kids' lives (mostly older Junior's). I've expressed that I don't want to move, but I won't stand in the way of her career. there are a lot of off grid preppers in AZ or the south doing it. I get the house down to 64 or so, and don't use battery power to keep it cool at night. (and have a grid option). But really, many people off grid have AC now ... it is a little expensive if AC runs off battery at night. Places where electric is 20 cents per kWh it makes more sense, or remote areas. One time I spent some time browsing the interwebs for info on wind turbines in central Washington. It appears that each turbine is owned by its own LLC. A majority of the LLCs are foreign owned. They lease the land. Based on that structure here is my prediction.
1. The turbines stay up so long as the tax credits flow. 2. If the tax credits end, the LLCs bail. 3. Because there are no tax credits for maintenance, the owners will just run them until the turbines fail. Then they bail. No incentive to spend the money to maintain. 4. When they bail, they won't remove the turbines. They will abandon them. The form lease the LLC provided will probably not even have an obligation to remove the stuff. 5. Then the landowner will have big useless dead machines on their land and no more income from them. The cost of removal will exceed the total income earned from the lease. 6. The landowner's financial remedy will be against a single LLC which doesn't have one single asset unless you consider a smoking, broken down wind turbine an asset. The remains will likely be classified as "toxic waste." 7. The end of a perfect grift and scam paid by taxpayers and ratepayers to a bunch of foreigners. Just on general principles having a system where you have to climb hundreds of feet in the air to maintain has a serious problem. It would be like if you could only maintain a jet airliner while flying at 10000 feet.
