Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | A Closer Look at Target’s Awful Q2 Reveals That The Financial Results Are Even Worse Than They First AppearedAce highlighted Target’s sales collapse in the second quarter of 2023 this past week, but there is more I’d like to highlight about just how punishing the consumer backlash against Target has been. First, here is a link and a quick snippet from the Associated Press about Target’s awful Q2 results. “Target Q2 Sales Fall on Muted Spending, Pride Month Backlash, and It Cuts Profit Outlook for 2023 [AP – 8/16/2023]Target reported its first quarterly sales drop in six years, dragged down by shoppers’ inflation worries and a negative reaction by some customers, widely publicized on social media, to its Pride merchandise. Sales fell nearly 5% to $24.77 billion as shoppers focused more on groceries than discretionary items. Comparable sales — those from stores or digital channels operating for the past 12 months — fell 5.4% in the latest quarter. In the fiscal first quarter, sales were unchanged. While a lot of people have fatigue about the coerced celebration of “Pride,” it’s important to note that the backlash is not anti-gay. The backlash is because Target decided to promote gender transition to children during Pride Month. Look at this impressive bar graph showing Target’s revenue collapse! Now consider the following, and realize how much worse this really is for Target: • Target saw a year over year decline in top line sales despite inflation of at least 4%. So in other words, had Target simply sold the identical volume and mix of merchandise in Q2 2023 as it did in Q2 2022, its sales would have increased about 4%, but with the 5.4% drop in top line sales, the actual impact is that Target sold almost 10% less merchandise! That is a staggering decline. • Q2 started on April 1, but the Pride displays didn’t arrive until sometime in May, at which time the boycott started. The Q2 results include the full month of April and part of May, before the boycott even started, which means that June sales had to be spectacularly awful to pull the whole quarter down so drastically. Further, the boycott had only fully reached its momentum in June, and carried on full steam into July and August, so Target’s Q3 2023 results (July, August, and September) should be absolutely catastrophic compared to Q3 2022. • Wal Mart just reported outstanding results for the same quarter that Target suffered its decline. It’s funny how those “inflation worries” that are affecting Target customers’ spending aren’t having the same impact on Wal Mart customers’ spending. Of course, there’s no doubt that Wal Mart picked up a lot of business in June from repulsed Target customers. “Walmart Earnings Smash Expectations After Weaker Second Quarter from Target [Yahoo – 8/17/2023] In the retail giant's second quarter earnings release, out before the market open on Thursday, Walmart posted same-store sales that rose 6.30%, more than the 4.04% expected, according to data from Bloomberg. "Our customers and members are resilient," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told investors on the earnings call. "They're looking for value, and they trust us to be there for them. We see people across income cohorts come to us more frequently looking to save money on everyday needs. That gives us an opportunity to drive conversion in more discretionary categories."Of note, when Wal mart promotes “conversion” it is talking about consumer spending, not the “conversion” that Target is trying to impose on your children. Meanwhile, its competitor Target (TGT), which reported Q2 results Wednesday, saw a 5.4% drop in sales and shared a dreary outlook for the rest of the year.Target’s revenue decrease in Q2 2023 was over a billion dollars, because American consumers are fed up with woke corporations and woke executives. Had the boycott started in early April rather than mid-May, the revenue hit to Target might have exceeded $2 billion. We consumers have the power to punish woke corporations and make them suffer for promoting ESG and the rest of the left’s diabolical agenda. Our dollars are extremely powerful weapons, and if corporate America doesn’t choose to refrain from political advocacy, we can make them suffer financially. Let’s keep it up. No Anheuser Busch. No Target. No Disney. No Gillette. No woke capital. [buck.throckmorton at protonmail dot com] Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I do wonder if maybe we're looking ALL of this through the wrong lens.
We tend to think of competition as being part of the corporate landscape. What if it isn't? Who actually "owns" Target? Who decides what they will and won't do? And then ask, who benefits from Target's demise (or AB's, or Dinsey, etc)? What if the powers that be are consolidating somehow. What if it's not about Company A losing market share to Company B, due to consumers making calculated decisions, but is instead, aligned and incestuous corporations making calculated decisions about where and how consumers will purchase? Beer drinkers still drink beer, laundry detergent still gets bought, cars, at least for now, will still be owned, no matter how many overproduced electric tin cans are sitting unsold on dealer's lots. I'm not saying I know, but what if Target and AB and Dinsey are NOT making mistakes, but this is part of the plan. Posted by: BurtTC at August 20, 2023 12:08 PM (TOvGn) 16

I think thee was a lot of rejection of Pride Month this year. Do you think exposing the pornographic aspect of Drag shows and the Libs of Tik Tok showing classroom grooming has finally shamed people into hiding their disgusting proclivities. Meaning wearing Pride merchandise does not win you adherents any longer?

Posted by: Archimedes at August 20, 2023 12:10 PM (I/Qkd) Or, you might consider that "Woke CEOs" aren't really in charge of anything, they're just following orders. Which makes much more sense, when you consider how many companies have embraced leftist/communist/fascist business practices. Did they all suddenly forget everything they were taught in business school? Are all the business schools churning out leftists? When considering who controls most of the wealth on this planet, and it's not CEOs, seems to me there's at least the possibility puppet masters are pulling strings, and the corporate concept is being fundamentally changed right before our very eyes. And we're all clapping because SOME companies appear to be suffering from backlash for their Woke policies. Something smells fishy about all of this. Out and about this a.m., I picked up a discarded WSJ Business & Finance section.
There is a lot of weirdness going on out there. A few highlights: 'EV Startup Vinfast had rocky rollout of Brand in U.S.' This is just too odd/complex to cover here. Vinfast is a Vietnamese manufacturer of EV's, which is attempting to establish a U.S. market. Here's the shocker; shares fell 34% on Thursday, after reaching an initial total value on Tuesday of $86 Billion, making the company valuation more than Ford or GM. The story goes on and on, and becomes more complex. Rather oddly, the company's initial plan was to sell the cars cheap (relative to, say, Tesla, $46,000), and lease the battery. Look up the story if you are interested. Pay attention to the name of their oddly-connected financing by Black Spade. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 20, 2023 12:22 PM (EvGP3) 40

Not a lot of noise about this in my midwestern area - the local store has never played up this crap, that I have seen, so their backlash may not be much. “Would they care if this entity or that entity, a corporation with solid roots in the American landscrape, goes tits up? ”
TBH I don’t really care either. Sears went tits up and I shrugged. I have no loyalty to any store or business just because they’re American and have been around for a long time. GM and Ford can fuck off and die as as as I’m concerned. As can Target. Posted by: Montec at August 20, 2023 12:32 PM (THY62) 67
The ironic thing about Walmart picking up Target's customers is that Walmart is just as woke. They sell gay pride March, I saw plenty there in June. But they didn't put it in their customer's faces in front of the store, and they didn't specifically buy merch for kids (a tucking bathing suit for kids, really? Gay coloring books of gay people kissing, really?) and made by Satanists.
Americans in general aren't anti gay, as was stated above. They just don't want it shoved in their kids' faces. I think some of this must be driven by buyers for the company or product execs that are gay. They choose merch to display they themselves would have wanted when they were young and sorting out who they are. They want to give affirmation to a new generation they themselves didn't get. The problem is a display that might fly in a Target in San Francisco or NYC where these decision makers move to is never going to work in a Target in middle America. They flew too close to the rainbow sun and got burned. Posted by: LizLem at August 20, 2023 12:33 PM (KYN8a) 68

I am willing to let gay people live their own lives, but I'm not willing to let them indoctrinate my grandchildren into the gay lifestyle any more than I'm willing to let them indoctrinate them into the trans lifestyle. Many gays claim they were "born" gay and that being gay is entirely genetic. I don't believe that for one second, and the fact that many gays try to indoctrinate kids into their lifestyle tells me they don't believe it's entirely genetic, either. Why indoctrinate kids if it is genetically inevitable that they will be gay? Any complex human behavior is a combination of genes and environment. Being gay is not any different. Q2 started on April 1, but the Pride displays didn’t arrive until sometime in May, at which time the boycott started. The Q2 results include the full month of April and part of May, before the boycott even started, which means that June sales had to be spectacularly awful to pull the whole quarter down so drastically.
============== Excellent point. Target started removing the Pride merch almost immediately too, according to a May 24 NPR report I just saw, so you know your conclusion is right: the decline must have been both immediate and severe. But the damage was already done, consumers were good and mad, and thank heavens for that impact. You’d think Bud Light losing 25% market share in a few months would prompt a few heads to roll. But none have. Allegiance to the cause is greater than profits. At least for now.
You just don't can the CEO when there is an easy to identify single fault problem. CEOs don't have employment contracts that look anything like that of a fry cook's at McDonalds. Boards have to do things, ponder, see if it blows over, check if this is culture, systemic or can be replaced by simply swapping out people in roles. If they go down the horribly expensive and legally challenging route of ousting a CEO (who wasn't already in the process of being removed for other things) then there is the payouts, golden parachutes written into contracts, incentives, perqs, all of that needs to be unwound; in the meantime they need to quietly identify the replacement. May be promotions, may be from outside. I think they are still in the "hope it blows over" mode. Posted by: Reuben Hick at August 20, 2023 01:13 PM (p8A+W) 165

The PTSD thing sounds like total bullshit but she definitely exhibits traits consistent with one or more Cluster B personality disorders. Posted by: Basically she crazy at August 20, 2023 01:05 PM (fhX0j) PTSD is often misunderstood, as it's really not about the nature or severity of the trauma, but how it manifests in the present. So yeah, people with personality disorders can and often do exhibit strong indicators of PTSD. The problem with using the term "cluster B" is that's an outdated and unhelpful way to dismiss personality disorders. Primarily because prescribers tend to dismiss them, because there's nothing in their magic bag of pills to address personality disorders. It's useful to distinguish TYPES of personality disorders, because it becomes predictive as to which treatments are going to be more effective, and which are not. Amber seems to have a some of Column A, some Column B, and sprinkles of Column C, D, and E. Depp's psychologist diagnosed her with Borderline and Histrionic, and I wouldn't argue with that, other than to say there seems to be some clear indicators of narcissism there too. Walmart does a good job around here, and it's probably being close to home office scrutiny. When I hear horror stories about Walmart, I can believe them. The stores in Erie PA pretty much sucked. I've been getting the bulk of my groceries delivered and the drivers are great around here. I don't know if they are truly independent or out of a pool, but I always tip on line and slip them an extra fiver when they deliver. One gal, on a Sunday morning, had her little girl in the car and I said "you have your helper". She said she was getting a couple orders in and going to church. I slipped her the five and she said "bless you, I forgot my cash at home and was going to hit the ATM for a tithe".

About boycotting companies...
It's a bit silly IMO to quit buying soap, or t-shirts from a woke company as some sort of protest. It does add up tho'. Denigrating these companies on social media probably does an equal amount of financial damage. Here's why: These woke companies hate bad press, especially on social media. So they hire people, at a significant salary, to police the various sites the companies advertise on. That costs them a lot more money than your $2 bar of soap or $25 t-shirt. The more bad press they get, the more people they hire. I've read that Target spent millions on "social media outreach" during the Pride fiasco trying to mend fences with disgruntled customers. That's millions they previously didn't have to fork over. Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 20, 2023 01:21 PM (Q4IgG) 184

266 Hard to beat their price for a hotdog and a soda for what, $1.69?
I mean, where else can you get lunch these days for under $5? Posted by: jim -- Met a Costco upper management guy once and we got to talking about it. He said they lost $1 or so (at the time, so probably $2+ now) on each combo, but folks would spend that dollar ten or a hundred times in the store on that same visit. I assume Sams pricing and motivation is the same. Posted by: Moron Robbie - The EPA has determined US has cooled since 1948 at August 20, 2023 01:59 PM (/BX3R) There have been a few articles about it that pretty much confirm what you wrote. Costco model is you have to pay an annual fee to get into the store, and NOBODY wants to pay a membership fee and then not use it (well, maybe that gym fee). 222 I pay $60 M for a Ferrari

Step 1: ban logging on state and federal land because spotted owls.
Step 2: leave the land unmanaged and call it ‘conservation.’ Step 3: let wildfires destroy everything then collect millions in federal disaster aid funds. Step 4: blame climate change. There's a couple of drug stores in Fort Smith that still have soda fountains.
------- The last here closed a couple of years ago. I still weep at its loss. It was a real community gathering spot. That lady you see in the pics started working there when she was 17. 267 Funny how they keep saying 4% inflation, when everything I buy here is at LEAST 50% higher in price than 2 years ago.
Posted by: Romeo13 at August 20, 2023 01:59 PM (oHd/0 Four percent inflation every month results in 50% rise in prices in just over ten months. If it's inflation per quarter, you hit 50% shortly after ten quarters (2.5 years). Posted by: Emmie at August 20, 2023 02:04 PM (Sf2cq) 287
I was traveling during the covid bullshit, and New Mexico was the worst, threatened with arrest at a gas station for not masking, outdoors, pumping. Back here, I made the black book at an Indian Casino for not having my nose covered. Tribal cops escorted me out but not before cashing in a couple hundred. I was geitting pretty lippy, telling the one cop he was wishing he could use his Glock, so I got lucky.

What I want to know is why decent people who would never hurt a child continue to so much of their shopping at Target. I understand occasional, minimal visits, but why make Target their primary store?

Target or Walmart?
I'm on a long term boycott of Walmart over 2nd amendment issues. Oh. Walmart sucks. They use a 5 letter acronym to identify the items on the shelves and the price. Um, no. I cannot decipher them and have not idea what the cost is. Recently they took out all the price check thingies. They do not staff the checkout lines so everybody goes to the self-check-out machines. That includes all of the grocery shoppers with 20-50 items while I have 2-3 items. So Walmart stopped carrying things I wanted to appease the pro-dictatorship anti-gun fascists. Target has some unpleasant crap to appease the perverts that I was never going to look at or buy. I'm going to Target and continue to boycott Walmart.
