I got to go there on a Saturday shopping trip after the wall had fallen and the Soviet Union was no more. 1990, 20 years old. Big old bonus in my pocket... I went everywhere I was allowed. Bought a definitely not cow leather trench coat there that I lost in flood a few years later. Kind of like those Australian bush coats but thick leather. The gov had free trips there to help prop up the economy. I regret not doing it again.

114 I've been trying to track down an explanation for the Lahaina fires - it's notable how every official is working very hide to try to *hide* any official explanation of the chain of events - and the best I can come up with is something like this:
1) being late summer, it was very dry and fire risk was very high.
2) a big windstorm hit with gusts up to 80 miles an hour. There was advance warning of this, but nobody did anything about this, even though it was known that power lines could be at risk in winds that high.
3) Some people suggested power be turned off during the storm, but the power company thought people would be upset if their AC was turned off so they did nothing.
4) power lines began falling down, but communications also failed at this time so still no attempt was made to cut power. First began at multiple points.
5) Sirens should have been sounded at this time, but since the Government had been embarrassed by announcing a non-existent missile strike recently, the system had been shut down. No warning was given.
6) as the fires spread, the water mains began to fail at multiple points because of the fires. The wind continued, creating a firestorm.

A bunch of places sell "emergency ponchos" or whatever they're called... basically a quick and dirty soft top that just rubber bands over your jeep if you get caught in a rainstorm. I never got one for myself though. I usually have so much random crap in there that if I took the top off, i'd get pulled over immediately for littering.

There is/are some residents saying the fire originally was "like a dumpster fire." My take. Then, when the local FD was called they "put it out" but did not stick abound to tamp down flare ups. Thus the conflagration.

As to the apparent fire not harming any $$ units... they did have wide fields of grass around, not unlike what California residents are told to do.

Still... there's some sketchy shit going down there.

But, they seemed OK with the status quo for years.... so my give a fucks are pretty much depleted.

It will be interesting to see how some of the diehard leftists react to having their property roached and their reaction to the government's plans.
