First World Problems...

strawstress.jpg

I would be shocked if the total weight of all of the plastic straws made across the world were more than a rounding error of the total weight of plastic manufactured. The maniacal fixation on plastic straws, created by some idiot middle-school retard who misread some data, took off around the world like a shot, proving Mark Twain's admonition* that "A lie is halfway round the world before the truth has got its boots on." Even granting that plastic pollution is an existential problem for the aquatic life of the world's oceans, rather than a manageable issue for the developing and third world countries that are responsible for the vast majority of the plastics dumped in our oceans (the West is far better at dealing with its garbage), why do the do-gooders (read: virtue-signaling twats) have to replace plastic straws with paper straws that are coated and can't be easily recycled and fall apart halfway through my otherwise excellent G&T!

From my perspective, that paper straw is much more of an affront to the natural order of things than the theoretical possibility that my straw will end up in the stomach of a lesser pink finned snarkfish.

G&Ts are sacred, and the world needs to show them the appropriate amount of deference and respect!

*He probably wasn't the originator of the aphorism, but I like Twain, so he gets credit today!

That is mostly because the first world ships all their plastic refuse there to be "recycled" and that means "dumped in the ocean because it is the only way to make a profit on it"

26 It is fascinating to try to work out why obsessions like this take hold, because I think it has a bearing on the entire environmental movement. People "feel" uneasy about most of the world today, making them perpetually anxious - some of this is justified, some of it is simply because most people are now completely divorced from understanding the things that make their privileged lives possible.

So, how to deal with this perpetual anxiety? Pick something common, cheap, and familiar, blame it for All the Evil in the World, and then stage a ritualistic burning of the Hated Thing, so everyone can fell that They Did Something and can now feel good about themselves.

But courts continue to convict and imprison people who swear they did nothing to harm the babies. Interestingly, Sickle Cell Anemia can cause the same types of symptoms exhibited by supposed "Shaken Baby Syndrome."

Incinerators are clearly a "renewable" energy resource since they are fueled by difficult to recycle objects.

Why transport perfectly good plastic straws out to the middle of the Pacific ocean when they can be burned locally to keep the A/C bills down?

Furthermore, fuel can be stockpiled next to the incinerator to deal with transportation disruptions.

Yep, if one really cared about overdevelopment, they would support the idea of the local dump. Which in time will ALWAYS be green spaces that will resist any temptation to build on.

Plants are resilient. They don't care that tons of plastic are buried underneath, as long as enough biodegradable stuff is buried there too.

57 Even if a plastic straw was found in a turtles nose and other plastic trash was found around a fishes neck (do they have necks?). It is the polluters that are the problem not the plastic items that make our lives easier and more enjoyable.

Most people don't pollute but probably about 5-10% of Americans* absolutely don't give a shit about anything. They take up 2 spaces when they park, they don't use their turn signals, and they throw garbage everywhere they go amongst other behaviors that define them as complete assholes. NO! You don't understand, now all that plastic is microscopic particles that you breath in, and then when you poo and pee, it goes in the sewers, and eventually makes it out to the ocean, where the fish drink it.

Curious thing though, as a bicyclist who used to ride everywhere, I noticed before and after the ban that loose plastic bags were almost exclusively found among the welfare demographic. I was only half listening. He seems to believe we need to leave the sharks alone though, and tolerate the occasional oopsie bites they give to humans.

The problem is that the wife and I are in the habit of sitting in the sunroom in the morning at about 0830, drinking coffee and chatting. We do the same at 1700, except then it's a cocktail, often a G&T. The sunroom overlooks the deck under construction, so we can see them, and they can see us.

I suspect the crew thinks we're mocking them, but we aren't. Should we wear straw hats and white suits?

It later was reversed with Wu Flu and then quietly re-instated.

Two other amusing things....plastic bags from some retailers, like the local pharmacies and food places are still allowed. Oh and the town mandates you use THEIR plastic bags to throw out your trash. No, they aren't special biodegradable ones...the town just makes money off them.

The trimmer head finally gave out on my Ryobi so went to buy a Universal kit - but the 4-stroke engine was 2001 and the Universal doesn't support anything before 2004 and parts are not available.

FiL had a good trimmer head attachment but his 2 cycle was no good, so with minimum modifications got the Echo trimmer head to snap in to the Ryobi.

Those 4 stroke engines last forever and still start on the second or third pull and can power through lake shore grasses and weeds where an electric will struggle.

165 What happens with the excessive power cord extension is that the voltage drop becomes so large that you loose a significant amount of power from the motor. If you use a larger sized conductor (smaller AWG or wire gauge number) this will minimize the voltage drop.

There's really is no easy way you could have a fire hazard with a loose extension corn unless you had it in contact with something highly flammable. It might get hot to the touch if you ran it a long time.

174 Jordan Peterson and Vivek discuss long format podcasts, and why some people prefer them for complex material, particularly for political discussions.

https://tinyurl.com/43vpdhms

I'm not one of them. I simply lose patience listening, and would far rather read, but to each their own.

Peterson observes that the idea that attention spans are shrinking fails to account for the widespread consumption of audiobooks and very long podcasts. Ramaswamy first responds by speculating that there's a kind of "low-level dyslexia," and most people are a little slower reading than listening, and that means they are really capable of absorbing more complex material than they're willing or able to read.

Ramaswamy immediately posits a second theory: There's a hunger for "human connectivity," and people want a "disintermediated relationship" that they get from hearing the voice of the person who is generating ideas. Peterson jumps on that: It's why unscripted podcasts work so well. Peterson says books can go deeper, but it's easier to deceive people with a book. You can "craft your lies." But with a podcast, you get spontaneity, tone, and demeanor. People experience Joe Rogan as "genuine."

181 I'm a really conscientious recycler. It's aesthetically unpleasing to me to think of garbage being buried for eternity-- unless it's biodegradable, which 99.9% of it isn't.

Here are some of my own first world gripes about recycling:

1) If a Big Gulp cup (courtesy of my kids) has a triangle on the bottom, is the lid automatically recyclable too, even though the lid DOESN'T have a separate triangle?

2) How about this message, from Pringles-type containers? "Can not recyclable. Lid check locally." How many people, in all the decades we've had recycling, have EVER bothered to pick up the phone and "check locally"? I see "check locally" a lot, btw.

3) Should every plastic box (crouton containers) be presumed non-recyclable UNLESS it has a triangle symbol on it?

If recycling is important, you'd think manufacturers would make these things clearer to the consumer.

The market didn't exist, so the government makes laws requiring newspapers and cardboard box manufacturers to use X% of recycled materials. That was how the market got started after the garbage barge photo from the 80s. Exactly like the straw nonsense.

Assuming the weedwhacker's current rating doesn't exceed the current rating of the extension cords it should be fine in terms of overheating the cord. If the weedwhacker seems to run slow on the extra-long cord you shouldn't run it like that as it can damage the weedwhacker.

No, there's no possible way. Even if conditions were perfect there's going to be enough contamination to screw up everything to the point where best case scenario could probably never break 50%

The "other counties 30%" you were given is probably a pretty realistic month-to-month number.

It's a massive waste of energy and money. Not just at the industrial level, either. Think about each household using time and water and power to accomplish nothing except job creation for the recycling industry.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Now they push 'recycle' which is one step before Refuse.
Forgotton are Reduce and Reuse.

I am big on Reuse. Had a drinking jar fo almost twenty years before it broke. It was a glass instant coffee jar. About 1 qt. Pefect for water, beer, lemonade, beer and lemonade... Broke and I cried a tear.
Use Mid's pizza sauce jars are good for mixed drinks (old fashion size).

Sending paper and plastic to the waste-energy plany is Reuse.
If one has a waste-energy plant it is cost effective to take mixed waste, shred it, run it through a magnet to pull out the ferrous metal (scavangers and real recyclers already picked out the aluminum and copper) and stockpile it all, sorted according to juiciness.

That old french fry oil goes to the rendering plant to be reborn as makeup and other things one would not fry in.

304 91 Plastic is absolutely a First World Problem: it's enabled a society to all but eliminate diseases caused by sharing containers. Single-use plastics are, what, THE reason for the general safety of the First World? Combined with even a bare minimum of cleaning agents, hand-washing and basic hygiene, single-use plastics have revolutionized and created the First World.
So obviously they must be totally eliminated.

As can state and local government. During our last "water emergency" the city had a crew that pressure-washed an entire plaza.

Fun fact: liberals lie, example #674392. Liberals claimed that 80% of the water is used by industry and agriculture, and 20% by residences, so residences needed to cut back on water usage by 10%.

But 50% of the available water - right off the top - flows into the ocean for the benefit of the delta smelt, so the real figures are industry and agriculture use 40% of the water, and residences 10% of the water. So a 10% cutback on residences would reduce water usage by ... say it with me ... 1 effing percent. Woot!
