The EV that is in your driveway or God forbid your garage, how did you swing the purchase? Government tax subsidies? Did you qualify for a $7,500 credit from the rest of us non-virtue signalers?

While you were driving by the gas station did you laugh at us with ICEs? Did you think, Suckers, you are paying for gas and taxes. And I use the roads without contributing anything to road maintenance.

Not so fast there paragons of automotive virtue, Techno-Hell: Utah and Oregon Now Require GPS Trackers on EVs in Lieu of Registration Fee, Tax Drivers by the Mile

Via the Utah Department of Transportation:
Utah roads are maintained using taxes from gasoline sales. As vehicles become more fuel efficient and the number of electric vehicles grows, the Utah Department of Transportation and Division of Motor Vehicles is changing to a per-mile fee as a way for drivers to pay their portion of roadway operations and maintenance…
You will pay 1.00 cents per mile, deducted from the prepaid wallet, up to the amount of the flat fee. Enrolling in Utah’s Road Usage Charge program gives you access to DriveSync® for Utah DOT an app that makes your driving safer and more productive through trip tracking and driving reports.
For a little added Orwellianism, the DriveSync® app also assigns a “driving score” based on how fast the slave citizen accelerates, brakes, corners turns, and drives. The app records bad driving behavior and shows it to the slave citizen on a digital map.

Torn? Have an uneasy feeling with Big Brother's electronic eavesdropping and social credit scoring system? I know I am. My guess those who truly believe they are curbing the dreaded "Climate Change" with their cars care not one iota government overreach.

10 State farm has a voluntary program to track, that gives you a discount. It's been interesting to see, since I drive to the lake and the store, sometimes the big city. It tells them nothing they wouldn't know from my driving record. I'll drop it, when I have the car paid off and can change my coverage.

Utah's gasoline tax is 31.4 cents per gallon so if you get ~31/mpg you're paying 1cent per mile.

The calculated ev:gas equivalency numbers give much high mileage to EVs.

Like a lot of government and business programs designed to be "fair", they throw in a thing you won't be against with the thing they really want and say you have to have both.

There's no reason for the tracking, it's just not necessary in the least, not even for post-crash analysis, since all the auto black boxes offer all the data one could want.

But you'll get it, and you'll like it, and because they will get acceptance with the ev's, nobody will be able to bitch when it's mandatory tracking for all.

Most people drive around 12k miles a year, 12k x .01 = $120 license tag fee for road maintenance if you have an EV. With no absurd GPS tracker and all sort of agents monitoring it.

Lots of vehicles on the market today, the sticker price is listed, then the dealers jack it up several thousand dollars. Toyota in particular is getting bad at doing so.

I think there's a combination of things going on here, namely the vehicle production being slowed by overseas parts (I'm looking at you, Taiwan/China) being scarce, by government putting pressure on auto makers to limit gas powered vehicles on the market, and dealers just being greedy pricks.

There's some intentional shortages to keep profit margins high is my theory. There's just no way "Covid" is till a viable excuse for not being able to make enough vehicles.

61 So is this both Utah and Oregon doing the tracking? Utah attempted, back in the early Covid days, a sort of state app that would trigger when you went over state lines or something.

They pulled it right quick because it failed spectacularly and triggered just by driving within something like 8 miles of the state line... and the State's fourth largest city is right next door to Nevada, so people triggered it by the tens of thousands every hour.

Can't imagine they have learned much or gotten much better.

On the other hand, if they provide this tracking info to all of us so we can avoid the EV drivers... that might be worth it. Or, for Portland, a map to where the goodies are for all the crooks....

I was under the impression that there was a previous precedent that disallowed governments to do this. It's why you can hold onto you income tax payments and withhold from your paychecks until a specific amount comes due.

That would be 1 cent per hundred miles.

The Utah gas tax is 34.5 cents per gallon, so about 1 cent per mile if you get about 34.5 mpg.

So I think "1.00" cents is correct, even if it looks odd written that way. The government doesn't like EVs that much.

It's sole purpose is road construction and maintenance*.
Heavier vehicle cause more wear and tear on roads.

Electric vehicles are much heavier than average cars therefore cause more wear and, so should pay more than average.

*IIRC - c.1985 over $1 Trillion of federal gas tax over years had been divereted to other uses with IOUs depositied into the DoT accounts. Similar to Social Security there was debate if that constituted double taxation. Now, damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!

Just a stupid question but what will prevent people that buy an EV in any of these States that are going to charge them the new tax from registering it out of State?

When we lived in CT you could buy a boat in Rhode Island where there were no taxes on boat sales and they would give you a burner address to register it so you never had to pay CT sales tax or the inflated yearly registration fees for your boat trailer.

I mean john *Sergent Rock* kerry did that with his yacht to avoid paying taxes in Mass, but he got caught.

One question that nobody ever seems to want to answer is what will happen to all of the *other* personal vehicles people use when we switch all cars/trucks to EVs? Tractors? Boats? Private aircraft? All of those use some derivative of petroleum. When petroleum is no longer cost-effective to produce due to the decrease in scale needed, what happens to every other vehicle out there?

Oregon Department of Revenue has this thing they do, they require that Oregon residents pay income tax even if they work in Washington, and some employers in Washington will, and some won't, do the withholding. "To be helpful" the Dept of Rev will check residency, and one of the ways they do this is to check where your vehicle is registered. A number of people each year who live and work in Southern Washington but register the vehicle in Oregon for tax reasons, wind up being dinged for Oregon withholding, penalty and interest. Which makes them so incredibly happy to contribute to Oregon State's government, you can believe me.

With that lack of exception noted, it becomes obvious that this is about control, because if you're going to tax cars per mile driven, even when they're driven outside the state, you could fulfill the same function by recording the mileage when you register your car each year and subtracting whatever said mileage was last year. But that's too easy, and doesn't nudge drivers or get them used to being monitored.

Ironically, it's funny to me as I am an ideal candidate for one! I barely drive at all, about 1,000 miles a year and live within walking distance of my work; for longer trips out of town I rent cars, because if something goes wrong, 'Hey! Your car broke! Gimme another one!' and I figured out long ago I could do pretty much everything I really need to with a golf cart.
That said, EVs for long trips are retarded and nothing short of a revolution in The Laws Of Physics could make them so.
