LOL: Zoom, the Company Whose Technology Allowed Laptop Liberals to Work From Home While Essential Workers Had to Brave Covid, Orders Its Stay-At-Home Workers to Come Into Work

Time for the Zoomers o peel their gigantic asses off their much-abused couches and report to f*****g work.

Telecommunications firm Zoom has ordered its employees to return to the office, reflecting the broader trend of employers restricting pandemic-era work flexibility requirements.

"We'll continue to leverage the entire Zoom platform to keep our employees and dispersed teams connected and working efficiently," the company stated. The company is seeking that employees work in the office at least two days per week, according to the BBC.

The firm's video conferencing services were instrumental in enabling worldwide remote work options during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company employees roughly 8,400 people. Roughly half of them work in the U.S.

In September 2022, roughly 1% of the company's workforce routinely appeared in the office while 75% worked remote and the remainder split the difference. In July of this year, however, only about 12% of employees were fully remote while another 29% were in hybrid arrangements.

I totally understand why workers want to work from home. I do myself, and I know other people who have been able to do things they could not -- like buying a piece of land far outside the city and raising their kids while still working in a city-based company -- if they were forced to come to work.

I think it's reasonable to press for work-for-home when feasible.

But after the school closings... I'm just a little sour on liberals demanding the right to work from home. I think we all are, even those of us who work from home.

And, also: As one might guess, people are less productive when they don't have bosses looking over their shoulders.

A study from economists at MIT and UCLA found productivity dropped when people worked from home.

The study observed groups of data-entry workers in India working from home and from the office.

People who worked from home saw their productivity fall by 18%, the researchers said.

The LA Times just seriously "reported:" Making black people show up for work is racist.

There's a lot of bad things about my industry, and I'd love to get out, but it looks like I'm never going to have to go back to the office again and that's worth a lot.

28 I'm not cheering this. I won't deny there's a certain satisfaction in seeing the overwhelmingly woke upper middle class find themselves inconvenienced, but telework has been good for precisely the reasons you laid out, Ace -- it allows people who would otherwise be locked into urban areas a chance to move somewhere more hospitable to raising children. That's far more beneficial to the right than to the left.

Also, the study you cite that shows productivity dropping 18% was conducted in India, and frankly, anyone who has dealt with the work culture of India understands why this is absolutely not analogous to the United States.

Dolley's new job won't consider, at all, remote work. She will get a hybrid 3/2 schedule out of it at least, and they're going to let her work remote until we buy a house (probably no later than December).

But, yeah, they own large amounts of land and offices, and they're getting use out of it again, dammit.

32 I did the WFH thing from March to August of '20. It probably has affected the way I look at work. Not having a commute was great, and it made me look forward to retirement in a way I hadn't before.

On the other hand I had to look at the same walls all day long -- unless I ran out to the store, and starting in April or May I had to battle the Face Diaper Nazis. So I spent more time than I liked at home.

Saves me about 1.5 hours of drive time, the piss break is only 15 seconds instead of 3 minutes (it's a long walk to the restroom at work), lunch takes 15 mins instead of 30 to 45 minutes, etc., etc., etc. So, I usually spend more time doing actual work when at home than when in the office.

The remainder of the time is spent meeting with faculty/instructors. Many of them work from home or are not on campus, so we use Zoom to communicate.

We have a lot less face-to-face meetings. Which means we tend to get *more* done since we aren't wasting our time with chit-chat/small talk.

I often would work late into the evening to keep up. One thing I did was get dressed as if I was going to the office. Shoes, pants, shirt.

On the other hand, I like office meetings via MS Teams (we dumped Zoom very quickly). It allows me to "be there" while doing actual work.

I suspect my productivity dropped by that much, because my work-issued laptop ran as slow as molasses in winter.

Not that my in-office productivity is anything to write home about.

85 I would love to work from home full time.

I would immediately move out of NYC to somewhere more friendly (like Texas or Florida) to people like me and the 2nd Amendment.

As it stands right now when we work from home we have to let the company know if we are in the Tri-State area or not. It is for tax reasons. The greedy State governments want to make sure they get their share of my salary.

I am sure if I worked from Texas or Florida for a NY based company there are tax headaches the company would have to address.

My 2 cents, oh wait, buck fifty (adjusted for Bidenomics)

It seems logical you'd work harder if your boss was around looking at what you were doing but...I'm not sure that's the case for your good employees.

So...do you put in a policy that makes the slackers work harder and annoys the people you can't afford to lose?

And to add to all of cities have intentionally made themselves harder to get in and out of - so if you have to choose:

Look for a new job
Commute 2 hours each day
Buy in an urban shithole

Funny enough, feds got more work done at home, probably b/c they got no early outs for snow, warmth, wind, etc...so, the pitch to get feds back is camaraderie and team-building, b/c productivity will go down...

But DC needs a bailout and VA has been thriving with work from home feds...thus, they need to go back says the liberal man...most "back to office" policies are meant as city welfare and security (more people around who care about the law, the more it tends to be upheld)...

The company I work for had a production increase of 4% in the first quarter of working from home and it has not dropped. Posted by: neverBiden at August 09, 2023 04:11 PM (eIGHH)

Precisely. The only reason US companies are pushing to go back to the office is because they can't justify the property taxes and the commercial real estate market has tanked so they can't sell it. And there are a lot of middle/upper management types who just want to make a policy change for the sake of making it look like they're doing something important.

I HATE working with remote teams in India. They'll straight up disappear on you for days on end with no explanation. If you don't watch them every second they'll take a second job or outsource their job to their retarded cousin. If you don't solve every coding problem for them, they'll take ages to come up with their own bizarre solution that has all sort of downsides that ten seconds worth of thought would have revealed. Oh, and they have ZERO initiative. If they hit a problem, they'll just stop. And you won't hear about it until you check on them to see how it's going.

And these are the guys that are still making $70K plus, not some $8/hour reject dragged off the street.

++++
I know a *ton* of people who did this. Hell, *I* did this.

But here's the thing: it's a gamble. If you do this, you must be prepared for when it's over. You will not be able to earn your big city money in a better, quieter, less-dense place with less density of your particular kind of business. You have to understand before making such a move that when the party does finally end, you will be able to comfortably live on what the *local* market will bear, including a period of unemployment while you look for a job in an environment that might not have nearly so many choices.

If you make a move like this while assuming that party will go on forever, you will get your face ripped off when it finally stops for you. You did *not* suddenly get rich, you got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with a very real - albeit unknown - expiration date.

164 After the wife retired from the VA I nuked zoom from her laptop, that thing is a security nightmare. She was HR and they sent her entire office to work from home when covid hit. It was a disaster, she spent more time trying to log on that she actually spent on meetings or working. She was constantly getting kicked off and unable to log back in even though we bought a high end laptop as soon as covid hit because we saw what was coming.

Her productivity went way down and she requested that she be allowed to actually come in to the office because of it but that was denied. It got to be so frustrating that she retired at 62, three years earlier than we had planned on.

I'm either working from home or on the road and it's been like this through a number of jobs. Hell, I've been working this current job for over 5 years and I've never even been to the home office once and in my last job I worked for 9 years I was probably at the office a total of 30 days.

He got put on a PIP, and then he noped out of there as fast as he could. He ended up much happier in a different place with different expectations.

184 > You didn't have to sign in or set up an account. It made the proliferation very easy.

Microsoft and others really dropped the ball with that. People get used to one platform, and they simply don't want to create a new login, download another program, and get it all set up and figure out what's different.

It used to be a very common problem where people's friend, church, and hobby groups couldn't all decide on a single platform. People simply wouldn't join meetings if it wasn't on the one they were on.

Zoom made that dead simple. Send me a link, I join in the browser and enter my user name. DONE!

Zoom, especially in the beginning, was MILES behind Skype. It was a buggy crapfest. But being able to send a link and get everyone to join a meeting in their preferred browser was so freaking easy.

It appears - for now - that there are two kinds of migratory activity in this great migration that's going on now:
1. People getting out of the blue hellholes for better nearby locales. These people are outright colonists and the better nearby locales will be destroyed.
2. People pulling up stakes completely and moving far away - like to a suburban or exurban or rural area in a much more conservative state. This is more vague - there may be colonists but so far it looks like a whole lot of them are refugees with no desire to recreate the shitty homeland in their new place. The jury is still out as a whole with this group.

233 I worked from home for the last ten years before I retired, and I loved it. While working for a biotech startup, I came down with the flu, and worked from home to avoid exposing others (unlike the a-holes who think they're martyrs for coming in and infecting everybody).

It suddenly struck me that practically no one either in the office or in outside contacts realized I wasn't in the office. It literally made difference, as I had fast internet, of course a phone, a fax (when people still used fax), and all my files were with me in digital form.

So when the biotech startup went belly up, I started consulting from home. It was great.

I did miss the birthday parties, the baby showers, the United Way crap, the Girl Scout cookies, etc. Not.

It just depends how much of a self-starter you are and how independent and how much self-pride you have.

My experience, particularly over the phone, indicates that there has been a real decline in service and an increase in mistakes and general dumbfuckery. Also, it's clear that some folks are spending their work days drinking.

Not saying that you or anyone here does that. But, if an employer, I don't want to have to fart around riding herd on people who are at home rather than the office.

If I'm paying you good money, I'd expect a good day's work and I can best insure that if you're at the office.

But, again, depends on the work being done and the person doing it.

While out running errands I got flipped off in the parking lot of Home Depot. While waiting for senor dipshit to slowly back out of his parking slot so I could go, I was able to observe two others backing out over in the next lane. They were headed for each other. So I waited until they were about 3 feet apart when I hit my horn.

But in my current life I simply could not work in the office 100% and having to commute 2 days a week would be a big strain.
