It probably is difficult to measure YOY when electricity prices have probably risen since and the daily weather isn't identical to last year's. I think the biggest jump in electric bill savings takes place when moving from a single station to a multi-stage or variable speed system. Going to a variable speed allows for temperature/humidity leveling where you can set a "Feels Like" temperature, and the system will speed up or slow down to maintain it. My wife's younger brother and his family could use prayer. They lost everything in what's being called the Gray fire in the small community they live in west of Spokane. Fire was driven by 35+ mph winds. He and his youngest were trapped and preparing to get on their boat to escape the flames when firefighters showed up and got them and some neighbors out. One neighbor had gone out in his boat and sent pictures of the aftermath. Entire neighborhood is gone as is a significant amount of the town. We have a fire east of us . We're still about four + miles out of the evacuation area but it changed direction this morning, jumped the highway and is burning in our direction. There is some pretty thickly wooded, rough country between us and the fire. On top of that, one of the two feral kittens I found suddenly turned listless, stopped using its back legs and is barely eating. It's essentially dying in my lap. My attitude is on the low end of the spectrum right now.

A graduate student of Meteorology, related to me by bloodline, explainified this year's lack of Atlantic hurricane activity: LaNina.
He said it is causing dryer than normal conditions in the Sahara, which is creating above average amounts of dust. The dust is being carried out over the Atlantic to the region of the Azores where tropical waves form and reducing the amount of convection. All sounds logical enough. Bottom line: in toto, if you want more hurricanes, you have to bless the rains down in Africa. Morning, all!
Willowed by Editor: Every other reviewer repeated that wrong info. The gatekeepers all got it wrong because of ONE person's error that nobody else ever checked or corrected. *** Print can often be the same. Every biography of Dorothy Parker repeats the same story, that, since her friends were worried about her drinking, she went to Alcoholics Anonymous. "Are you going to join?" Dottie: "Certainly not. They want me to stop now." Great story. And the biographers all place it about 1930-1932, around the time the Depression got started. The problem is, AA wasn't founded until 1935. Good morning, Horde!
Am off to another day's fun and games, playing in traffic. Racked up 425 miles yesterday, looks to be about the same, today. Bummer is, long days on the road make for short days with the Horde. Prayers up for everyone on The List, and those who aren't but are yet in need. Time now for me to lace up the shoes and head for the exit. Seeya in the ONT, I hope! Amidst all the bad news, let us remember that God remains present and if we sometimes wonder why His work isn't more obviously, the likely answer is that we have shut ourselves off from Him. To that point: incredible news from Maui that the Catholic church and rectory in Lahania were the only structures spared by the wildfire. When I say "spared," I mean the entire church complex is almost untouched. The school was damaged, but the hedges are still green. It's incredible. The parish is dedicated to Our Lady of Victory, btw. God is sending us clear signs, but are we even looking? Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. My local Eighties oldies FM station has Casey Kasem from August 1981. I listened mostly to the AM radios in my work truck and my car then, and the local Top 40 station was trending toward oldies, so I never heard Rick James's "Super Freak" that year.
My work then, I hated with fierce passion. My home life I loved with an equally fierce passion. Never have been able to love both simultaneously (except, maybe, my time in Denver). Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 19, 2023 09:22 AM (omVj0) 116

My portable solar panel which is four panels and folds up with a handy carrying handle is producing 275 watts at 9:50 am with a sunny sky with just a tad bit of haze. Intended for off grid RV living. Rated at optimum conditions at producing 350 watts per hour. To put in perspective my refrigerator uses around 70 watts per hour. So at least I have that covered in the inevitable power outage. Two years ago on Friday the 13th of August, Daughter and my 101yo Mom went out to lunch at Mom's favorite place. When they got home, Mom headed to the bathroom, but fell and broke her hip.
I did not rush down to the hospital because we weren't c19 compliant, but mostly because Mom had her live-in nurse helper with her. She was rushed into surgery for a successful hip replacement. As a Moron said when I mentioned it, if they did that, she must've been in good shape, and she really was, for 101. Expected her to get up and come home. Then my little sister flew in from out of state. She held all the legal power for Mom. From the hospital, my sister called and said, "Mom has made her end-of-life decisions." I had battled siblings before over Mom's health, and I knew I was powerless. When Mom's trainer called to encourage Mom to get up and start getting used to her new hip, my sister cut her off. By this day, two years ago, Mom was dead. When I last saw her alive, my sisters were hovering over her unconscious form, debating whether they needed to use fentanyl. I had to leave. The Horde as always was full of prayers when she fell, and sympathy when she died. God bless ya. Prayers up to all who need them! It's Saturday, and I'm not insanely busy yet, and I've remembered to check in here. The kids had an appointment with the Guardian ad Litem scheduled for this morning, but he called and said he's having flight trouble so the meeting needs to be rescheduled. It makes things easier and more difficult at the same time. Another court date coming up this week. Grateful for things that I do have, even in the midst of this process. Kids start school on Monday. Not looking forward to the morning routine though. May the Lord have mercy on us all.

Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at August 19, 2023 10:33 AM (t/2Uw) So not a REALLY Jewish bakery.... Blaster, what you do with it once it leaves the bakery is up to you and has no reflection on the process of producing the bagel. Although my parents never had any formal religious training, my grandfather founded a synagogue so my sisters and I did. We never kept kosher but there were certain items that were verboten including bacon, ham, and swordfish for some reason. Lobster however was perfectly acceptable. 😉 Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at August 19, 2023 10:49 AM (t/2Uw) 280

Where is pumpernickel in the bagel hierarchy? I like pumpernickel, with (real) cream cheese. And butter. It's excessive, I know, but butter AND cream cheese is divine.

I watch this YouTube channel called geography king. It’s what yiu think it is. Geography nerd talking about geography and watched by other geography nerds.
Anyway he did one of those man on the street interview things, Jay Walking style. Asked questions like what states border Tennessee and what is the least populated state that borders a Great Lake. The types of questions where you have to think about it for a bit. And surprisingly - to him as well as me - most people knew stuff. His intent was to do a “look how dumb people are” video but instead got a “hmm people aren’t that dumb after all” video instead. Posted by: Montec at August 19, 2023 10:57 AM (R5tJV) 291

My burg the average sq ft costs $375.Although that is a little skewed by suburbs where houses are McMansion-y. The bigger the house the less per sq ft costs generally thanks to scale.
In town where houses are generally small and old it’s closer to $500/sq ft. Posted by: Montec at August 19, 2023 11:04 AM (R5tJV) 303

Never liked rye bread. The seeds are just icky. I know we never made anything other than plain bagels but this was back in the day before bagel shops were a thing.
The bakery made those big loaves of bread they used to put on buffets at steak restaurants and delivered bulky rolls to grocery stores. Deliveries were made in the wee hours of the morning. Couple of times I went with him(home from college) and got to see the culture of the "night" people stopping in at all night diners. Funny the things that make memories.
