American Pedagogy Is Broken, And No Amount Of Money Can Fix It
The pleasure of seeing Lebron James, a pompous, entitled, smug, illiterate roundball player being pilloried for his arrogance in thinking that his money and face was sufficient to create some sort of little Harvard on the Cuyahoga is delicious. But this miserable situation exposes the horrendous state of American education, and proves that the mantra of the teachers and their hard-left unions that money will fix everything is an evil, craven strategy to enrich them at the expense of the country and its children.
LeBron James's school of failed promisesNBA megastar LeBron James once said, “being black in America is tough.” If that’s true, then his “I Promise School” has made it even tougher. The students at the school, 60% of whom are black, cannot pass state-issued math tests. Not one eighth grade student passed an arithmetic test in three years, according to reports. It’s an embarrassment and unmitigated disaster for James, who has been a frequent know-it-all and outspoken critic on social issues. The news of the “I Promise School” was initially met with great fanfare when it opened in 2018. The school benefited from a trove of resources from one of the country’s wealthiest celebrities. Stories of how great the kids were doing dominated the news initially. James was heralded as a hero. But just a couple of years after it opened its doors, it failed to uphold its most basic responsibility: educate children. James’s educational initiative quickly unraveled into a school of failed promises.
Many of us are the descendants of immigrants who came to this country with literally nothing. They were thrown into the melting pot of late 19th and early 20th century America, without benefit of a massive welfare state. Yet the public schools were able to educate these people, most of whom didn't even speak English! They became productive members of society, and their children and grandchildren became doctors and lawyers and accountants and engineers. The American education system worked; and it worked well! It was bare-bones in most places...yet kids learned to read and write and do math and were taught civics and history and geography...all without benefit of computers and child psychologists and gender assessment guides and condom use classes. And those teachers? They were expected to look, dress and behave appropriately. No blue-haired, pierced and tatted freaks grooming eight-year olds to be the latest flavor of sexual and social dysfunction. But along the way, courtesy of the insanity of the 1960s, our education system was turned on its head, and the techniques that had educated millions were no longer considered acceptable, for many opaque reasons, but of course the real reason was that it was traditional, and it worked. But black America got a double shot of failure, as LBJ's Great Society took the burgeoning black middle class and turned it into a dependent, passive, democrat-voting pressure group whose children no longer had the benefit of strong social connections via two-parent households, church and school. The results were predictable.

So buying the best that a failed system can offer is itself a recipe for failure, which is why Lebron James' vanity project is a catastrophe. What's the solution? It's long and painful and requires the destruction of most of higher education, which is the source for most of the nonsense going on in our K-12 public schools. Until education majors are taught reading and writing and 'rithmatic, along with history and civics; nothing will change. Until post-modern, woke insanity is banished from public education; nothing will change. Until the teachers unions are destroyed; nothing will change. And for black America, until education is valued more than three-point shots and rapping; nothing will change.

I have a friend whose kid is starting high skrewel this year. She's not sending him to public school, and I understand why, but given the amount of cash she's shelling out for it, I'm wondering if it's worth it.
Are these private schools any better/different than publics? I'm sure some of them are, but there seems to be something predatory about it, when h.s. tuition exceeds what most people spend for a college year. How many of the same dingbats who run public schools have gravitated to the privates, and are basically doing the same thing, for which you are paying them thousands of dollars, above and beyond the taxes you already pay?

Here's something that's occurring in my AO, don't know if it's national: The past ten years or so have seen the appearance of lawn signs and banners congratulating the high school graduate who lives at an address. It started out with just text, but then grad photos were added, now the "mission crreep" demands that TWO photos are diisplayed: cap and gown, and formal grad pic.
The thought that always comes to mind is, OMG what is wrong with these people? Graduating high school is not such a big achievement! But then I thought about the high school grad of say, 1960...that student really could boast of achievement. S.he likely experienced better than what the average liberal arts college graduate can claim today. They are the ones that should have had the lawn billboards put up for them.

Maybe it’s time to bar blacks, quadroons, octoroons and quintroons from any skools whatever.
It seems to hurt them more than helps and those who want to become edumucated can do so at home.
Of course, the hi skool coaches can still have them come in to play the sportsball.

At a certain age we should start teaching home economics (learn how to cook and sew) and basic finance (learn how to make a budget, balance a check book). And of course bring the shop classes back. Learn how to work with wood or metal, and how about electrical and plumbing? All sorts of skills lacking in the US today.

Son of an immigrant, grandson of others on Mom's side. Dad always told the story that when he was a Little Kid on the boat from Finland, he and my Uncles were learning a little English. And when they got here, even speaking Finn around the house, they would get strict orders (probably The Belt) to learn English in school. Some of these kids speak a brand of English unheard of outside their neighborhoods.

Michael Jordan - arguably the best, most talented basketball player on the planet attempted to ascend to pro baseball - with his millions devoted to private coaching - and he barely made a dent in AAA ball. He tried pro golf - same, he appeared in proam tourneys based solely on his stardom, not elite skill. Tangential, but interesting (to me, anyway). There's a Nigerian man at my church. He's about 80, and came here to get a Ph.D. in physics or engineering, I can't remember which. He became a permanent resident while he was in school. One day, 3 guys show up at his school looking for him; guys from the draft board. He explained that he was a PR, and in grad school, but they didn't believe him. Next thing he knows, he's in basic at Ft. Bragg (IIRC). It took a call from his advisor to get the military to back off, since he had a deferment.
I did not know a PR was subject to the draft.

Are these private schools any better/different than publics? I'm sure some of them are, but there seems to be something predatory about it, when h.s. tuition exceeds what most people spend for a college year. How many of the same dingbats who run public schools have gravitated to the privates, and are basically doing the same thing, for which you are paying them thousands of dollars, above and beyond the taxes you already pay?

81 Not having to do with nothing, my Dad, who was 15 years older than Mom, got drafted during WW2 at age 30. Evidently the Selective Service was getting selective, and he was one of the Ritchie boys. Guys sent there that were from countries in Europe occupied by the Krauts, or in Dad's case, Finland having that weird "mutual combatant" title. Dad was in G2 for awhile, and then shipped out. Being a baker he was assigned to the Veterinary Corps (go figure). Food and field oven inspections.

Ya know, I actually live "in" the city, not near it. My kid's went to actual city public schools, where being of the pale persuasion, they were in a distinct minority. And did well, and made friends of some and got to know of many other kids of many various persuasions themselves.
I see almost none of those BLM signs and the like in the city neighborhoods or urban areas in general.
On the other hand, I see them in wealthy suburbs, even in southern Vermont and New Hampshire, where any interaction with urban minorities is few and far between.
Value signaling pontification from behind the battlements. I really dislike those people.

I'm sure it's all complicated, but whatever other lies get told about this war, it wasn't due to Putin wanting to expand the Russian empire.

For five years I volunteered as a private citizen of the school district to read the graduation papers of the seniors of the local high school. Usually a couple dozen local citizens, business people, and such would participate. The loss in the writing skills over that time was incredible. Things like spelling, grammar, and logic, had declined. I pointed it out and was not asked to volunteer any more.

Then after his failed stint as AG, he was beaten badly for his old seat by a former Auburn football headcoach.

Late to this but my opinion is that all the schools are doing now is poisoning the minds of our children. And the first rule you follow once you realize you're being poisoned is STOP TAKING THE POISON! We need to shut down the schools immediately, fire all the teachers and start re-hiring immediately, starting with lie detector tests to filter out all the communists/leftists.
For those who say that would harm the children I would answer - we already shut down the schools for all intents and purposes during Covid for 2 years, all to no gain. At least with this shutdown the gain would be to take the poison out of the system and start fresh.

I confess, I'm not black, so I have no idea of what black culture consists of. I have my observations as an outsider, but as is the case with so much, one cannot not fully understand from the outside, nor does anything fit fully inside a box as easily as we'd like.

We made a lot of hiring mistakes in running Germany and Japan after WW2. A lot of government, military and business people who had been part of the regimes we had just pretty ruthlessly crushed were kept or brought back into those positions. Because that was who was available and who had the knowledge.

Somewhat related, yesterday am was listening to pro-conservative radio show generated from South Jersey when parents/guardians were calling in about the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) - Healthy People 2030 - they had received from the U.S. Census Bureau along with a new $5 bill for following through and completing it as requested. First round, several kept the $5 was kept but trashed the survey. Reportedly, the Children's Health Survey was resent to non-responders through without another $5 bill.

And the armed services flag officers at the top, are ALL political, but they conceal it well from us kulaks. The military is pretty paternal, which is another way of saying it has strong socialist tendencies, and creates them among higher ranking officers. People say Trump made bad personnel picks… and he did. But who circa 2015-17 had even a vague understanding of the rot in the fed guv and the GOP? I know I didn’t…. When President, Trump was truly a man alone…. Pretty much the whole government including his own appointees worked against him. GW Washington was the first; after him came William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, US Grant, and Eisenhower. I went to Catholic schools, and when I was growing up that was the case. Teachers dedicated to the job (even though many of them weren't that good at it), schools scraping to get by, parents paying hard earned cash they couldn't always afford, for what they believed were quality educations with moral foundations.
I don't know how much that's the case anymore, and not just the private schools that aren't religious in nature. Even the Catholic schools where I grew up, a lot of them are massively expensive, with fancy buildings, and well-paid teachers. I'm really not sure how "Catholic" they are anymore.

JROD - since you asked, DeSantis would bring his appointees in from his Florida administration, that's what all Governors who become Pres do, and they will be criticized because no one will have heard of any of them before. And they will owe everything to DeSantis because they will all be absolute nobodies/unknowns without him. This is nothing new, that's how the game has been played a long time, but its a thing Trump never understood. You have to have already lined up a group of unknown administrators who are loyal to YOU and you only.

Trump, IMHO is/was far closer to what the founders had in mind with regards to citizen-politicians (to mis-use a Stephen Ambrose title) than the current parasite class that has done nothing else in life than suck from the public teat. Biden being one of the most egregious examples.

Before then, almost every gov job was up for grabs, and after that, we got the professional civil service (i.e. the Deep State).

The DJT vs RDS debates were “fun” (i.e. intense and interesting) for awhile but DeSantis is fading (I saw where one of his big RINO donors said he’s withdrawing future $’s until RDS moderates his campaign) and I doubt he’s coming back. So they’re not as fun anymore. DeSantis was my #2 but he’s dropped behind Ramaswamy for me… mainly because VR’s statements have been right in line with my own thinking AND he has FU money (like Trump) AND he’s never been in government (which more and more for me is a huge positive…. There’s something about going to Babylon DC that corrupts even good people… Trump is the only and a huge exception; his experience in DC made him better IMO)

Based on your answer I would assume he has something close to that number in administration workers already(?) Next question I have as far as appointees(besides DeSantis vetting process) is the appointees that will be under attack from Deep State/Democrat "lawfare". They are putting Trump administration appointees in prison right now. I guess they must have been the good picks, I don't know. Curious if they and DeSantis know exactly what they're getting into at the federal level. What are they willing to risk and put themselves and their families through?

Dwight Eisenhower was an admirable man and a career soldier, but I don't think he ever saw combat as a frontline officer, unlike George Patton and Doug MacArthur (WWI).Ditto George Marshall, who was a highly regarded staff officer under Pershing in WWI (Pershing predicted he would be promoted to high rank, Marshall was pretty smart), but I don't think he ever saw combat. He was near it (not implying he or Eisenhower were cowards, but never were actually in combat. Patton was wounded leading a battalion in WWI.

Never has a country been so powerful yet so weak and stupid. Won't last long. As for change and what will cause it? Pain. Pain is the primary driver of change in people and organizations. Very rarely is pain seen from afar and averted before impacting lives. Change is coming because of the pain. And that doesn't mean the change is good. But it is on the way and gaining steam.

I had teachers from the late '60's to 1980 that were limited in their career options, growing up in the 1940's and '50's. Nurse, teacher, secretary.
I had incredibly gifted teachers who cared about their jobs.
My kids had C students who wanted summers off and it showed.
I don't think there is any hope with our current model for public schools. Shut them down and ask Elon to fix it. Or Sweden. Or Taiwan.
