CNN Reporters Have Their Cars Broken Into for the Third Time in Oakland

If you're here keeping track, this is the 3rd time my CNN rented car has been broken into in the Bay Area in the last year. But I've finally learned to not leave even a candy bar in the car anymore (still doesn't stop the car break in but at least we don't lose anything)
At the rental car return lot, the employee tells us of the 250 cars returned yesterday, 27 had been broken into, just more than 10% of cars returned

Well that was a fun, heartwarming story.

But what can you do when the police don't bother arresting criminals because judges don't bother jailing them? And Democrat legislatures make theft a legal trade?

Here's another fun, heartwarming story. The name of this story is: "That's Called Whoopin' Yo' Ass"

Since NYC doesn't do much, the hard working people have no choice but to take matters in their own hands.

64 I work for a company based in Silicon Valley. When I would visit the head office, I flew through SFO. I'd rent a car if I was there for more than just overnight, because it was cheaper than taking cabs or Ubers everywhere. Starting in 2018, the company changed its car rental policy. If you were visiting the home office, no car rentals were permitted.

This stuff is the reason why. Rental cars are easy to identify (they have barcodes and stuff) and often have good stuff in them - luggage, laptop computers, etc. High probability of a score and it's easy to identify the target. As a major corporation, my company self-insures and so is actually on the hook for damages. The amount that rental cars were actually costing in terms of repairs (those broken windows and seats and whatnot *do* actually have to be paid for) and lost equipment (those laptops have to be paid for, too) was staggering.

It was far cheaper to direct people visiting the home office to take cabs everywhere. The unit costs of cabs are a lot higher than renting a car, but much lower on balance because the company wasn't paying to repair damage from break-ins and to replace equipment anymore.

I was outraged when I learned that I wasn't allowed to mine my own property. I wasn't talking about luring people in, but doing it right. Putting up a 10' fence with clear, internationally-recognized placards warning of a mine field beyond the fence.

There's some engineering geek on Youtube who rigs up these elaborate fake delivery packages that are intended to be stolen by porch pirates. Once the perp has the package in his car it activates by spraying paint and glitter all over the interior. He has a camera rigged up in the package so you can see the thief going nuts as the thing pretty much destroys his car.

It's funny as hell. Could be a nice thing to put on the seat of a rental vehicle.

The normalize it internally. I was in a meeting with a guy from SF a few months back. A few of us were early and making small talk. He mentioned that he was mad at the FedEx guy who was just there because the FedEx man left a package at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the front door, instead of at the top. My colleague saw the delivery on his security camera and went down to get it immediately, but it was gone before he could get to the door. He said he preferred when FedEx delivered to the top of the stairs, because he could usually get to the package before it was stolen that way.

He went on to say that he was just grateful that his catalytic converter hadn't been stolen, because his neighbor had it happen three times to his Prius before the neighbor gave up and just sold the car.

He was pretty blase about it. Just life in the big city.

I'm not sure of the limits of this. The original case came from Iowa I think, where a guy rigged a shotgun booby trap in an unoccupied shed people kept breaking in to. You normally couldn't use deadly force to keep people out of a shed, trespassers would not reasonably expect death as a consequence of entering an empty shed, so the courts ruled against the owner.

If you booby trapped your home's windows at night, someone broke in and were killed while you were home...you might be legally sound, although fighting the civil suit from the family might be tougher.

I told this story before: was learning to fly a helicopter (little Robinson R-22) about 15 years ago out of Long Beach airport.

A guy in my class was out training with a CFI; they were flying low -- about 500 feet -- over Compton when they heard gunfire. Eventually they realized that they were being shot at from the ground by gang-bangers with pistols.

Needless to say, they hightailed it out of there. I didn't get a chance to ask him if they were holding their pistols sideways ...
