For what it's worth, I was in Ex-ComBloc Country once when the Olympics were on in a crowded bar, and they were broadcasting the shooting competition on National TV; the entire bar was cheering their athlete.

We as Americans are increasingly alone in the world. The press in Britain was all over Brian Harman in the recent British Open because he (Brace yourself, people. What I'm a out to tell you is shocking) hunts deer and pheasant! They started in again on it in this week's women's British Open with American Ally Ewing.

I grew up in St. Louis. Not everyone, but a huge percentage of the boys played soccer instead of football.
The high school I went to had several guys who went on to contribute significantly to their college teams winning nation championships.
I was good, but I wasn't good enough to play on my high school team. Played for a number of years AFTER high school. It's a fun game to play, but to watch? Nah, I have drying paint that needs to be monitored closely.

Soccer is the only (professional) sport that a complete amateur in decent shape could play a whole game and (almost) no one would detect it. Try that in any other big league sport and you'd be revealed in about 30 seconds. Okay maybe you could play right field if no one hit the ball your way and going 0-4 at the plate is not that unusual but still ....

A first world observation of dissonance, I think. I spent the couple of days on the Outer Banks - nice area, almost rural to the south of Nags Head, north of there is overbuilt to my view. Anyway the people in places like Buxton were terrific and seemed pretty based, even the surfers. However, on the main road in (64), numerous billboards about vaccines and boosters (not old) as well as several ones intoning, "mental health is health". The government there is disconnected from everything but Charlotte I'm guessing.

We have twice been in Canada during the summer Olympics: 1996 (Atlanta) and 2016 (Rio). Say what you will about America's Hat, the CBC covers EVERY Olympic event with commentators who actually know about the sport involved. At least as far back as 2016 the commentary wasn't contaminated by wokeness, but who knows in the Castreau years.
None of the revolting "heartwarming" stories about the athletes and focus on the "glamor" sports that you get from NBC. Just straight up competition. A delightful experience. I've never been able to watch NBC's tarted up garbage since.

Minor league baseball, seen live, is actually pretty good! It flows nicely, there's no fooling around, everyone playing isn't a prima donna, the minor teams I've seen in baseball were a lot of fun. Tickets are cheap, food/beer is cheap, I like minor league. But at this point you literally could not pay me (any amount less than $500) to go to a major league game.

And yes, I have been in bars in The Balkans where I genuinely had to watch football/soccer with My Guys or else. I cheered when everyone else did, etc. It's a sporting event for them so sure.

My old neighborhood was taken over by Hispanics. The kids played soccer in the streets non stop. On weekends and holidays, grown men took over all the available fields to play soccer. I suspect all of them -- men and boys -- would roll on the ground laughing if they saw an American football.

And yeah, but '94 it was so damned obvious it was ridiculous. But I let myself believe... until after the Great Home Run Race of '98.
Since then I think all the records, pretty much from '94 on are tainted. What they're doing the balls has been studied and verified, with some woman, I forget her name, being the biggest thorn in baseball's side these days.

MLB is different, the guys playing at that level are (or they used to be) so refined in their game, it takes a precision to be good at it, to the point where some guy is killing it at Triple or Double A, but comes up to the majors and can't buy a hit (or for a pitcher, gets shelled every time out).
I love that fact, that the best of the best are literally in a league of their own.

I loved playing American football. And I probably would have liked playing rugby and lacrosse. Any sport where I have the chance to physically beat the shit out of the other team.

I live in Currituck County, on the mainland by the Outer Banks. I will tell you important insider info. The Lighthouse in Buxton is a dividing line-anything north of it faces directly east and it can be oppressively hot with a SW wind and heat like there is today. Lighthouse and South faces Southeast and even on the hottest day, the wind blows over the ocean and is tempered by that. The all-time high temp at the lighthouse is only 90 degrees. Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village are more temperate for that reason.
It works the other way with water temp. With a strong SW wind, the Gulf Stream can blow offshore on the eastern-facing beaches, but usually still kisses Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras. The ocean temp is often 10 degrees warmer South of the lighthouse.

@87 I covered the Adult Kickball Championship in Virginia Beach a few years ago. It really was fun. I could call the game using 90% baseball terms. Winning team got $2,500, so it's not exactly a "pro" sport, but they were serious about it, and the pitchers were remarkable in that they could force grounders/pop-ups, etc. almost at will.

In 1990 I was in Yugoslavia on a battalion-sponsored vacation. Scotland had lost to Yugoslavia in a preliminary match, and the Scots tore up the bar we were at (Portoroz). My buddy and I had to tend to a local who had been beaten and stabbed (we were medics). Then we were grabbed by the NCO who was with us, and we darted off just before the police showed up. We washed off the blood in a fountain, then went to get more beer.

It's a simple game, obviously. All these sports, the ones where the player has to get a ball past the other team's defenses, they're all basically the same. Even if the ball is a round, flat piece of hard rubber.
Lots of athleticism involved, not a lot of strategy. Just penetrate your opponents' defenses. It has been likened to rape. Because, yeah, when the ladies get uppity about things, it's always about rape.

Completed the mods to the wheeled Weedeater. Made a forked strut to more securely attach the gearbox/cutter head to the shank. Said strut is welded to the shank, and bolted to the gear box, so the cutter head can still be removed, if necessary. Cut a longer axle from some 3/8" round stock I had on hand; cut some suitable tube spacers, and now the track width is increased to about 22" from 12". Finished the sidehill cutting on the ditch should, and the increased track width made it a piece of cake. General pushing is much easier now, as it tends to roll straight ahead when pushed, instead of darting to either side. I am very pleased with the results.

I was a duty driver during Reforger '90. My officer was a really pleasant German Captain. His English was excellent, actually better than mine. He asked me once to explain baseball. I spent a lot of time trying to do so, but finally just told him that you had to play the game to get it.

If you want to make soccer a real sport, it's easy. Keep the basic tactics/strategy the same, but alter the scoring system to be like American football, allow full-contact and the use of hands, no pads, and effectively no rules. Nobody gets a timeout even if his femur is poking out of his earhole, let alone for pretend injuries. You could call this game "rugby."

Stopped and watched for a while, then moved on. It's a spectacle, like a trainwreck or a lady on a parkbench breastfeeding her baby. Not really my place to be watching, but it's hard not to stop momentarily and gawk.

Baseball has an element of suspense and drama to it. Every pitch is a mini-drama. Soccer, they just mill around aimlessly, and kick the ball on occasion.

Baseball has an element of suspense and drama to it. Every pitch is a mini-drama. Soccer, they just mill around aimlessly, and kick the ball on occasion.

If you want to make soccer a real sport, it's easy. Keep the basic tactics/strategy the same, but alter the scoring system to be like American football, allow full-contact and the use of hands, no pads, and effectively no rules. Nobody gets a timeout even if his femur is poking out of his earhole, let alone for pretend injuries. You could call this game "rugby."

I've played "organized" indoor soccer. Other than using hands, that's basically the gist of it.
The game can and does get violent. I got really good at taking out opponents using weight based leaning, and the subtle art of taking their feet out from under them without the somewhat obsolete ref noticing.

I was on a bus riding through Cypress Hills in NYC and of course I was the only White person there in a field of Black-ish people and Bangladishis; an old Dominican guy took it upon himself to loudly instruct a pack of Bangledishi kids carrying a bag of cricket bats on the finer points of baseball.
It was, really, one of the truly funniest things I have ever experienced.

I was in Germany from 91-94. One season our Kaserne softball team went to the Army Playoffs. Some of our German buddies, girlfriends, etc. came by to watch a few games, and even after watching a whole day of play, they still really didn't get it. But they loved it when one of us crossed the plate. They knew that was the goal, but not how or why we got there.

No joke, I think real baseball fans are like trainspotters. They love the numbers, the stats, the history.
I ran into trainspotters doing research on a specific locomotive in Poland, 1941, the only evidence we had was a partial snapshot taken by someone's grandfather and we had no permission to use the whole picture, I had to crop it to technical image only, and man, did those people come through.
So to those kinds of people, the game itself is only there to compile more numbers and stats.

I agree, actually. Football has become overly specialized. It started with everyone playing both ways, but now we have the "third and long" guys.
Baseball is going that way, too, starting with the DH, and the long and middle relievers, followed by the closer.

American football shares some similarities with rugby. But it's a less violent, much more cerebral sport. Players have to have a higher level of intellect. Not huge, but more. Rugby can be played by dolts, and it is. At the level of coaching it, it requires a powerful intellect. Perhaps genius, at the pro level.

No joke, I think real baseball fans are like trainspotters. They love the numbers, the stats, the history.
I ran into trainspotters doing research on a specific locomotive in Poland, 1941, the only evidence we had was a partial snapshot taken by someone's grandfather and we had no permission to use the whole picture, I had to crop it to technical image only, and man, did those people come through.
So to those kinds of people, the game itself is only there to compile more numbers and stats.

Americans say this stuff, but then they go crazy over American football, which is basically rugby played in molasses. 99% of plays involve 10 seconds of action to move the ball 2 yards down the field, followed by five minutes of players adjusting their bras and shoulder pass. Yawn.
