We as Americans are increasingly alone in the world. The press in Britain was all over Brian Harman in the recent British Open because he (Brace yourself, people. Posted by: Skip at August 13, 2023 02:06 PM (MOY79) I grew up in St. Louis. Not everyone, but a huge percentage of the boys played soccer instead of football. The high school I went to had several guys who went on to contribute significantly to their college teams winning nation championships. I was good, but I wasn't good enough to play on my high school team. Played for a number of years AFTER high school. It's a fun game to play, but to watch? Nah, I have drying paint that needs to be monitored closely. Posted by: BurtTC at August 13, 2023 02:10 PM (reDQJ) 15

Soccer is the only (professional) sport that a complete amateur in decent shape could play a whole game and (almost) no one would detect it. Try that in any other big league sport and you'd be revealed in about 30 seconds. Okay maybe you could play right field if no one hit the ball your way and going 0-4 at the plate is not that unusual but still ....

Kickball as was played when we were kids might actually be fun to watch. Played like baseball you rolled the ball to the plate and the batter ran up and kicked it. Coolest thing was you could throw the ball at the runner to try an get him out before he got to a base. Might be fun to watch adult leagues

Minor league baseball, seen live, is actually pretty good! It flows nicely, there's no fooling around, everyone playing isn't a prima donna, the minor teams I've seen in baseball were a lot of fun. __________ What's fun is the unpredictability of minor league baseball. I guess having sports teams you cheer for on TV is a viable alternative to otherwise entertaining themselves by blasting each other out the saddle with any weapon they can lay their hands on so sure, it's a Good Thing. Posted by: LenNeal at August 13, 2023 02:42 PM (43xH1) 92

Baseball IS boring… in a vacuum. But it’s a uniquely American sport with tons of history and tradition. Read Leo Durocher’s autobiography “Nice Guys Finish Last”…. Despite the slow pace of the game, when you know the history it just enhances the experience… especially if Vin Scully or Harry Carey are calling the game. Alas, the MLB I really enjoyed died in a strike circa 1994
Posted by: LinusVanPelt at August 13, 2023 02:38 PM (xT8gx) The '87 season was the first indicator I saw they were messing with the conditions of the game to increase scoring. Whether it was juiced balls, or the early juicing of players, it was on. And yeah, but '94 it was so damned obvious it was ridiculous. But I let myself believe... until after the Great Home Run Race of '98. Since then I think all the records, pretty much from '94 on are tainted. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at August 13, 2023 02:41 PM (MoZTd) Lower levels are fun to watch, but in many ways it IS a different game. You have pitchers who throw hard, but as soon as they put a big looping curve over the plate, it gets jacked. Or they don't have the control to not walk guys. MLB is different, the guys playing at that level are (or they used to be) so refined in their game, it takes a precision to be good at it, to the point where some guy is killing it at Triple or Double A, but comes up to the majors and can't buy a hit (or for a pitcher, gets shelled every time out). I love that fact, that the best of the best are literally in a league of their own. Posted by: BurtTC at August 13, 2023 02:51 PM (jWidL) 113

I live in Currituck County, on the mainland by the Outer Banks. I will tell you important insider info. The Lighthouse in Buxton is a dividing line-anything north of it faces directly east and it can be oppressively hot with a SW wind and heat like there is today. Lighthouse and South faces Southeast and even on the hottest day, the wind blows over the ocean and is tempered by that. The all-time high temp at the lighthouse is only 90 degrees. Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village are more temperate for that reason.
It works the other way with water temp. With a strong SW wind, the Gulf Stream can blow offshore on the eastern-facing beaches, but usually still kisses Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras. The ocean temp is often 10 degrees warmer South of the lighthouse. Posted by: Sandy Drawers at August 13, 2023 03:01 PM (83IzV) 136

Can you explain cricket? Posted by: Bandersnatch at August 13, 2023 03:19 PM (GzDfN) ____________ You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. All these sports, the ones where the player has to get a ball past the other team's defenses, they're all basically the same. Even if the ball is a round, flat piece of hard rubber. Lots of athleticism involved, not a lot of strategy. Just penetrate your opponents' defenses. It has been likened to rape. Click-whissssh! Beer break at stately Peon Manor.
Completed the mods to the wheeled Weedeater. Made a forked strut to more securely attach the gearbox/cutter head to the shank. Said strut is welded to the shank, and bolted to the gear box, so the cutter head can still be removed, if necessary. Cut a longer axle from some 3/8" round stock I had on hand; cut some suitable tube spacers, and now the track width is increased to about 22" from 12". Finished the sidehill cutting on the ditch should, and the increased track width made it a piece of cake. General pushing is much easier now, as it tends to roll straight ahead when pushed, instead of darting to either side. I am very pleased with the results. If you want to make soccer a real sport, it's easy. Keep the basic tactics/strategy the same, but alter the scoring system to be like American football, allow full-contact and the use of hands, no pads, and effectively no rules. Nobody gets a timeout even if his femur is poking out of his earhole, let alone for pretend injuries. You could call this game "rugby."

I'm a hockey fan and I've been one for 50 years but I can't explain the offside rule.
When an attacking player enters the zone (crosses the blue line) before the puck does, he's offside and play stops. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at August 13, 2023 03:59 PM (YRsIm) 313
I'm not even remotely athlet but I love sport. I don't put down anyone who can play any sport, even darts.

I find it kind of funny that people who are into baseball call soccer boring.
Posted by: Montec Baseball is for people who want to drink mass-market beer and argue about 37 stats per player, and only pay attention to the game 10% of the time. Soccer's comparable sport should be hockey. Get the thing past the goalie into the net, and only stop for penalties. But soccer is 1/4 the speed, with no weapons, no aggression, and no contact allowed. And an enormous net that the offense still can't hit more than once every couple hours. Oliver Anthony just performed "Rich Men North Of Richmond" to an SRO crowd at a Currituck, NC farmers market this afternoon. Stunning. The crowd was singing ALONG with Anthony the entire song. How many even heard of him a week ago.
This anthem will change the country. LINK: https://youtu.be/x8aQaHx_i_k Posted by: mrp at August 13, 2023 03:53 PM (rj6Yv) Nope. Gonna take more than a song. Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons at August 13, 2023 04:01 PM (BdMk6) 318

The kickball that I remember from grade school was played on a baseball diamond and the rules were basically baseball rules except that you kicked the ball instead of throwing it.
That was kickball, right? Posted by: Cicero (@cicero43) at August 13, 2023 04:01 PM (bQKgA) Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at August 13, 2023 04:01 PM (YRsIm) 322

Yes, at levels below the high minors and majors, it's fun to pick out the guys who have real talent. It's pretty easy to see, if you've never seen them play before, and even if they don't succeed in the game (how they take pitches, the loud outs, etc), you can tell when they have skills.
Posted by: BurtTC at August 13, 2023 03:58 PM (P7aLi) _____________ Even the geezer leagues here feature pretty good players (we routinely win national tournaments), with everybody having played at high school, college, and/or semipro level, and with a number of guys who played professionally, some even at MLB. Periodically we'll have a newb show up who claims to have played at a high level, little realizing that we watch how he throws and swings and know with ten seconds whether or not his claims are true. I work at a supermarket. I know some things. And that store is history. The one guy fought to get it there by the demands of the Folk who elected him, and they fucked him. The only women’s soccer I watched this year was a clip of the penalty kick missed around the world. Reminded me of my early kickball days in when I tried to kick the ball over the outfielder’s head.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia' That's what baffles me about this. If he'd done the obvious 3rd World thing and made alliances with enforcers in the 'hood, and made that supermarket a protected space with gang leaders through the churches, that supermarket would not be leaving. I'm curious as to who queered the deal. My money is on DC Feds. Posted by: LenNeal at August 13, 2023 04:08 PM (43xH1) 332
If the Street Leaders in that 'hood wanted that supermarket to stay there for their Nanas, NO WAY is that store closing. The fact it is going to, absolutely, says someone else is in charge.

Americans say this stuff, but then they go crazy over American football, which is basically rugby played in molasses. 99% of plays involve 10 seconds of action to move the ball 2 yards down the field, followed by five minutes of players adjusting their bras and shoulder pass. Yawn.

US of Ass is a third world toilet where people have to use apps to avoid all the human crap..and the poop.
Perma-rioting, explicit calls for genociding the white population from government officials and a crime rate that would shame most third world countries. On pretty much every social metric, from suicide to mental health problems, the US is the worst performing country in the OECD. You can't even manage to run elections without massive fraud. I notice you Merkins never sneer at non-European countries; why is that? Israel is great though! Posted by: General Giap at August 13, 2023 09:33 PM (Tvq7+) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0693 seconds. |
